Outstanding: Rangers fans praise Scott Arfield after hat-trick vs Motherwell

[ad_pod ]

Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to heap praise on Scott Arfield, after the attacking midfielder netted a treble against Motherwell to help his teammates to a resounding 3-0 win.

The 30-year-old – who joined the Ibrox ranks last summer – grabbed his eighth, ninth and tenth league goals of the season to earn all three points for the Gers, where his link up with Jermain Defoe in attack was particularly impressive.

Check out Keith from C’mon the Hoops’ fascinating video on the origins of the Old Firm derby below…

The win sees Steven Gerrard’s side move onto 66 points for the season, although they are still someway behind bitter rivals and league leaders Celtic.

Specifically, however, Arfield’s performance was a display enriched by clinical finishing, whilst his all-round game and decision making up top helped contribute to a very easy-on-the-eye victory for the Gers.

Some fans may have been fearful of a result in the absence of Alfredo Morelos, but Arfield stepped up to the plate as Rangers’ star man missed out through suspension.

Let’s see what the Rangers supporters have been saying on Twitter about Arfield’s performance…

Ruben Dias would be a brilliant signing for Man United this summer

Despite two loses on the bounce, the current dip in form surely won’t detract from how good Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been since taking over and the permanent job should really still be given to the legendary United forward, fans believe.

Indeed, the fact of the matter is, any manager is bound to endure some defeats during his time in the hot seat and Solskjaer is no different.

His time in charge at Old Trafford has been nothing short of brilliant so far, having ensured Manchester United are challenging for a place in the top four and they’re still in the Champions League, something that looked impossible whilst Jose Mourinho was manager.

Clearly, confidence is flowing through the team with players re-finding not only their love for the game but also their greatest capabilities.

United fans have really enjoyed watching their team flourish and they truly believe with a few top signings in the summer, they will be established title contenders once again.

To start with, a centre-back as good as Benfica’s Ruben Dias would do wonders for United’s backline and could make all the difference to their silverware hopes for next season. Dias, (who is valued at £25.2 million on Transfermarkt) is on the road to enjoying a fabulous career in football and a move to Manchester United would be a step in the right direction.

With far more exposure coming at a club like United, Ruben Dias could make a big impression alongside Victor Lindelof for example.

He’s played 25 times in the league this season, helping by providing two goals, an assist and eleven clean-sheets.

The 21-year-old is equipped with modern-day skills for a defender, not afraid to pass the ball around and has pace to be adaptable across the backline.

Manchester United fans, would you back such a move? You’ve been linked with Dias before in the Sun and he’d certainly be an exciting prospect! Join the discussion by commenting below…

These new faces may boost Arsenal next season

Arsenal have been fairly solid under new manager Unai Emery and, as the Spaniard is approaching his third transfer window with the Gunners, we look to who he can bring in to improve in the weaker areas of his current side.

Indeed, the North London side have certainly looked good in patches, though there is quite clearly a gulf in class when it comes to battling the real big boys. Despite all the talent he has available to him, Emery isn’t blessed with a squad as good as Manchester City’s or Liverpool’s and the project in play at the Emirates obviously needs some big backing if they’re going to close the gap.

With that in mind – considering what we’ve seen so far – here’s a look at two options the club should be considering ahead of the summer window.

Kai Havertz

Kai Havertz has been one of the many wonderkids in the Bundesliga this season. Providing 9 goals and 4 assists in the league, the young German talent could be a worthy replacement if the eventual exit of Mesut Özil is to finally happen in the summer, as was touted by Calciomercato some time ago.

The 19-year-old attacking midfielder has had many highlights this season, he has managed to bag himself 2 goals in one game on more than one occasion, 2-6 away win at Werder Bremen and a 3-1 home win against Hertha Berlin. as well as proving effective against the smaller German clubs.

This season alone, Havertz has shown that he could be of real use in the Arsenal midfield and with the help of Matteo Guendouzi, they could form a long term alliance and bring a balance of strength and creativity to the middle of Arsenals midfield once again.

Denis Suarez

Already with the Gunners on loan from Barcelona, it could be argued that they already have a key summer signing wearing the jersey. Since joining in January, the 25-year-old has found it hard to get some real game time under Unai Emery, however with this and given more time, the Spanish midfielder could prove to be one of the signings of the window if given a permanent deal.

Seeing as he is being given time to adjust to the Premier League in the closing months and been shown the way Emery wants his team to play, this is like a 3-month training programme for next season.

How Napoli went from immortal Serie A champions to also-rans in just five months

Hiring Rudi Garcia to succeed Luciano Spalletti always looked like a disastrous move – and so it's proved for the Scudetto holders

The boos began before kick-off at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, the home fans furious that Napoli coach Rudi Garcia had left both Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Piotr Zielinski out of his starting line-up for Sunday's Serie A clash with Empoli.

By half-time, president Aurelio De Laurentiis was so displeased with the Partenopei's performance that he felt compelled to enter the dressing room – not for the first time this season – and speak with Garcia and his players.

Kvaratskhelia and Zielinski, two of the protagonists of last season's title triumph, were introduced just eight minutes into the second half of a game that was still scoreless – and the former very nearly broke the deadlock in the 89th minute with a low strike that Etrit Berisha somehow saved with his outstretched left leg.

However, while there was to be a late winner in Naples, it came at the other end of the field, with Viktor Kovalenko brilliantly sweeping home a cut-back from fellow Empoli substitute Tyronne Ebuehi.

The boos began again in earnest, with Napoli whistled off the field by their own supporters after a third home defeat of the Serie A season that left the champions fourth in the table, 10 points behind leaders Inter, and made Garcia's dismissal inevitable. All that's missing is the official confirmation. But the Frenchman boarded a flight to Nice on Monday and if he returns to Napoli at all, it will only be to collect his things.

So, how did it come to this? How did things unravel so quickly for a team that enchanted Europe last season? Garcia only took over in June, after all. But, truth be told, he never looked like a worthy successor to Luciano Spalletti, and it was actually somewhat surprising that he lasted this long…

    'A new era with Spalletti…'

After Napoli had clinched the title with a draw with Udinese at the Dacia Arena on May 4, De Laurentiis took to the stage at the Maradona and told the delirious 50,000 fans in attendance who had been watching the title-clinching match on giant screens that a first Scudetto in 33 years was merely just a taste of things to come.

"The project never stops," he declared. "This is a starting point for me; not an arrival. We resume next season with Spalletti." The very next day, De Laurentiis revealed that he had activated the one-year extension clause in the coach's contract.

"Spalletti is someone I had been chasing for years and finally I managed to bring him to Napoli," De Laurentiis told . "He got us back into Europe and now I would like to open up a new era with him, because he is a great leader."

Spalletti, though, was not in the least bit impressed by the fact that his contract had been extended without warning. According to reports, he was keen to stay at Napoli, but wanted to know the club's summer transfer plans before committing himself to them – which was fair enough, given it was already clear that Cristiano Giuntoli, the sporting director who had constructed Napoli's Scudetto-winning squad on a shoestring budget, was leaving for Juventus.

Spalletti and De Laurentiis decided to clear the air over dinner. Everything was decided inside 15 minutes. Spalletti explained he was exhausted and wanted to step down. "Am I hurting myself by leaving Napoli? Yes, but I'm not leaving because I stopped loving," he explained. "I'm leaving because I loved and gave everything. I am not someone who changes his mind easily after making a decision. And I don't want there to be friction with president De Laurentiis. I don't want there to be a division."

    Spalletti on sabbatical…

Napoli fans were devastated, but De Laurentiis argued that it wouldn't have been right to stand in the coach's way. "Spalletti is a free man," he told . "When someone comes to you and says that he has done all he can and an era of his life has concluded… He told me that he would prefer to have a sabbatical year. What do you do then? Do you oppose it?"

However, the pair's comments on the matter did little to quell the suspicion that they had fallen out; that they could simply no longer work with another. They certainly didn't seem to be on the same page anymore, that was for sure – because less than a month after quitting Napoli, Spalletti was contradicting De Laurentiis' claim that he wanted to go on sabbatical.

"I only said that I needed to take a breather and sort some things out," he told reporters in July and, less than two months later, he was back in the game, unveiled as Italy's new coach after Roberto Mancini's shock departure.

    Underwhelming Garcia appointment

By that stage, De Laurentiis had surprisingly turned to Garcia, pointedly remarking that it was "a pleasure" to announce the former Roma coach as Napoli's new boss "having got to know and spend time with him during the past 10 days" – which was widely interpreted as a reference to his strained relationship with Spalletti.

The fans were less enthused by the news, though. Antonio Conte, Roberto De Zerbi, Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique were all linked with the role so they rather understandably expected the newly-crowned champions of Italy to attract a higher calibre of coach than Garcia, who hasn't lifted a trophy since 2011, at Lille.

Garcia's use of a Spalletti-like 4-3-3 formation had played a big role in De Laurentiis' thinking, as it would, in theory, mean less tactical disruption for the players. However, the input of Carlo Verdone had also been key. As well as being a good friend of De Laurentiis, Verdone is also a Roma supporter and was full of praise for Garcia, who twice led the Giallorossi to second-placed finishes during his three years at Stadio Olimpico.

Garcia's work since then, though, was far less noteworthy, and Napoli supporters were rightly concerned that De Laurentiis was entrusting Napoli's new immortals to a man who had effectively been sacked by Al-Nassr for failing to sustain a Saudi Pro League title tilt with Cristiano Ronaldo up front.

    Player unrest

In that context, Garcia's struggles came as little surprise. There were mitigating factors, of course. The loss of South Korea centre-back Kim Min-jae to Bayern Munich was a hammer blow to the backline, while an injury to Victor Osimhen robbed Napoli of their most reliable source of goals.

However, even before the Nigerian was sidelined with a hamstring problem, it was clear that Osimhen, who still hasn't signed a new contract, wasn't entirely happy with some of Garcia's decisions. Last season's capocannoniere reacted furiously to his substitution in the 0-0 draw with Bologna in September – and there were similar touchline tantrums from Kvaratskhelia and Mateo Politano during the games against Genoa and Fiorentina, respectively.

After the 3-1 loss at home to Fiorentina, which came just before the last international break, Garcia appeared a dead man walking – and he was only granted a stay of execution because Conte reportedly turned De Laurentiis down because he was unwilling to take over a team midway through the season.

Patterson displays the grit on which titles are laid

Amid the sort of bitterly cold weather in which even Captain Oates wouldn’t venture out, Yorkshire’s lower order demonstrated the type of grit that can make the difference between winners and losers in a Championship season

ScorecardWarwickshire’s slip cordon feels the chill•Getty ImagesAmid the sort of bitterly cold weather in which even Captain Oates wouldn’t venture out, Yorkshire’s lower order demonstrated the type of grit that can make the difference between winners and losers in a Championship season. Most cricketers can flourish in conditions when the sun is, figuratively or literally, on their backs. But it takes a certain sort of determination to succeed in discomfort, under pressure and despite interruptions and distractions.Yorkshire displayed such grit here. From a position of 209 for 6, their lower middle order has earned not just a chance of gaining full batting bonus points but, if the weather relents, the possibility of pushing for a win. And they did it on a day when the wind blew viciously cold, when play was split in what appeared to be dozens of short sessions and when anyone sensible would only have ventured out in thermals and supported by a team of huskies. While the contribution of Adil Rashid can be of little surprise – he has the class to have made it as a specialist batsman – the contribution of Steve Patterson was more unusual. Until today, he had scored only one first-class half-century – an innings of 53 against Sussex – in a first-class career that started in 2005 but now resumes in the morning requiring only six more runs to be the highest scorer of the innings. But it was the manner of Patterson’s runs that was most surprising. He is an admirable, reliable cricketer but both his career strike-rate – he had scored his runs at a rate of 35.93 runs per 100 balls before today – and his nickname, “Dead”, hint at a character that is usually solid and dependable more often than it is exhilarating and flamboyant. Here, though, he thrashed 11 fours as he feasted on Warwickshire’s frustration – there were a fair few long-hops bowled at him – and weariness. And while he looked less comfortable against the pace of Chris Woakes – described as “one of England’s quickest bowlers” by his coach, Dougie Brown – he still managed to time the ball sufficiently well that what appeared a decent yorker was speared to the point boundary before the man positioned barely 15 yards away could move.It might have been easy to presume this match – likely to be interrupted by more poor weather over the next couple of days – was heading nowhere. But who knows whether the Championship may, in five months time, be decided by a bonus point gained on a grim, April day in Birmingham? Patterson and Rashid, in particular, earned their side at least three more points that seemed likely at one stage. It would be easy to point out Warwickshire’s faults in the field. Really very easy. The innings contained overthrows, drops (Liam Plunkett was reprieved from the first delivery he faced – Tim Ambrose putting down the chance off Keith Barker – while Ryan Sidebottom was reprieved at slip by Varun Chopra off Chris Woakes on 2) and really quite a lot of wayward bowling. For much of Patterson’s innings, he was more at risk of frostbite or polar bear attack than a yorker. But this has been an awful stop-start game played in brief patches of uncomfortably cold and horribly windy conditions. It cannot have been easy to gain any rhythm on the pitch – it was miserable to watch from the stands – and it really wouldn’t be appropriate to put down a mug of hot coffee in the press box and criticise too harshly. It was not easy out there.”It was disgusting,” Brown, the Warwickshire director of cricket, agreed. “But you still have to have professional standards. We shelled a couple of catches, which is disappointing, but Yorkshire deserve a bit of credit for the way they batted. It’s quite a good wicket and the margin of error for bowlers is very small.”When play finally started – 49.3 more overs were lost on the day, making it 87.3 in total so far – Warwickshire appeared to have seized the initiative. Jack Leaning’s footless drive was punished with an outside edge, before Gary Ballance’s increasingly fluent innings was ended by a good one that left him from Barker. Had Plunkett been taken next ball, as he should have been, Yorkshire would have been 209 for 7.Instead Plunkett counter-attacked in a partnership of 43 with Rashid before Patterson helped add 91 for the eighth-wicket in 20 overs. With Rashid, getting well forward and driving neatly, forcing the bowlers to pitch shorter, the ball tended to sit up obligingly on what remains a decent pitch.Clarke and Woakes were the pick of the bowlers. Gaining in rhythm by the spell, Woakes had worked up a considerable pace by the end of the day and finally defeated Rashid with one that may have tailed in a little. With Mark Wood injured and Chris Jordan departing to the IPL, it seems Woakes may be competing with Jake Ball for the final spot in England’s Test squad. All three England selectors were at Edgbaston on the second day to see Woakes demonstrate his pace and his improved inswinger. They will know he is a better bowler than he showed during the Test in Centurion.Still, in a match containing 13 Test cricketers, it was arguably Patterson’s performance that caught the eye. On a day when nearly everyone else looked as if they would rather be somewhere else, he took advantage.

Gurkeerat, seamers fashion Punjab victory

Half centuries from Gurkeerat Singh and Harbhajan Singh capped a good bowling performance from Punjab on the final day to help them beat Maharashtra by three wickets in Pune

The Report by Amol Karhadkar in Pune 24-Dec-2014
ScorecardFile photo: Harbhajan Singh promoted himself to No. 4 and struck a rapid half-century•AFPMaharashtra penalised for slow over-rate

Maharashtra captain Rohit Motwani was fined 40 percent of his match fees while his team-mates were fined 20 percent for their poor over-rate all through the Ranji Trophy match against Punjab at the Maharashtra Cricket Association stadium.
Despite the adjustments for numerous stoppages in play, Maharashtra was found to be 11 overs short. It is, according to BCCI’s rulebook, a “serious offence” and match referee Sunil Chaturevdi handed out the penalties.

Gurkeerat Singh batted through a finger injury and his half-century capped Punjab’s outstanding comeback to beat Maharashtra by three wickets in Pune. His unbeaten 73 ensured the Punjab seamers’ success in the morning translated to a second victory in three matches.Set a target of 204 in 51 overs, Punjab got home with 25 balls to spare despite left-arm seamer Samad Fallah completing a 13th first-class five-for.Maharashtra had begun well with Fallah getting rid of Jiwanjot Singh and Amitoze Singh for single-figues, and having Uday Kaul caught at first slip. At 52 for three, Gurkeerat took guard with a heavily-strapped little finger on his left hand, which he had injured while attempting a catch off Rahul Tripathi in the morning. Gurkeerat had been rushed to a hospital and was relieved to see a ruptured tendon instead of a fractured finger.A Shirkant Mundhe indipper bowled Mandeep Singh and Punjab’s captain Harbhajan Singh stepped up at No. 4. Yuvraj Singh had not fielded during the Maharashtra second innings and could not come out until 120 minutes of the chase or the fall of the fifth wicket. Conditions were still good for batting despite the best efforts of Fallah, Mundhe and Anupam Sanklecha and Harbhajan took advantage with a quickfire half-century.Punjab needed 129 runs to win in 25 overs and Harbhajan went after Fallah, pulling him for a four and hitting him over long-off in the same over. He would strike two further sixes during a 54-ball knock. He targeted Sanklecha cutting and driving and striking him over long-off as well. The fifth-wicket partnership between Harbhajan and Gurkeerat fetched 83 runsMaharashtra attempted to gain control with Akshay Darekar’s left-arm spin and the move almost paid off as Harbhajan’s loft to long-off was put down by Kedar Jadhav. Harbhajan was on 41 then and Punjab 140 for 4. He would fall in the next over – the first of the 15 mandatory overs to be bowled in the last hour of play – he had hit a six off Darekar to get Punjab closer to the target.Yuvraj came in next and slammed Mundhe so hard the ball landed on the hovercraft beyond cover boundary, and drilled a Fallah yorker into the sightscreen. Next ball though, he flicked down Sanklecha’s throat at deep square leg. Two balls later, Fallah trapped Gitansh Khera lbw to leave Punjab at a precarious 182 for 7.Gurkeerat was saddled with the tail with 22 runs left for victory, but he calmly rotated strike before Siddharth Kaul finished the game with back-to-back fours off Sanklecha in the 11th mandatory over. The result was, however, set up by the Punjab seamers earlier in the day. Maharashtra began at 259 for 3 with Jadhav on 109, but Amitoze drew an outside edge of first ball Jadhav faced in the morning and was caught by the wicketkeeper Khera. Had Gurkeerat pouched the nick off Tripathi in the next over, Punjab would have ended up chasing a relatively smaller target. Tripathi, who was on 63 then, made Punjab pay by registering his maiden first-class hundred.Tripathi and Ankit Bawne, who resumed batting after retiring hurt on the third day, were milking the Punjab bowlers and Maharashtra were well on course to draw the game and earn a point. But Bawne was caught behind off a slash against Kaul soon after completing his half-century. Sandeep Sharma used the opening and struck twice in the penultimate over before lunch. He strangled Tripathi down the leg side and had the out-of-form Rohit Motwani out caught in the last ball before the break.
