Leeds fans discuss whether Helder Costa is getting better

Leeds won yet again when Hull visited Elland Road on Tuesday, and though they had to be patient, Marcelo Bielsa was happy with the end result and the contribution of Helder Costa.

The 25-year-old has taken a while to settle in Yorkshire but he has now been given a run of starts to prove himself, and his manager believes he is improving with each passing game.

Costa got a vital assist against Reading and followed that up with a goal against Middlesbrough, and his pace in attack has proved useful in matches since, particularly on the counter-attack.

A true test for any Leeds fan: Can you match these iconic images with the right results?

Bielsa stated that he helped to unbalance Hull and the dynamic he brings to the side is different to his teammates, which is why he has been praised by some supporters.

Former Leeds player Noel Whelan said that his display was worthy of winning the Man of the Match, and with four dribbles and three key passes made it is fair to say that he played a big role in the win.

However, it can be argued that he has still fallen short of his form at Wolves and therefore has performed below expectations, which is a worry considering the Whites have a £15m deal in place to sign him permanently.

He started off slowly, claiming one assist in his first 18 league games, and though there are now positive signs, fans should probably be asking for him to deliver more. Some supporters certainly aren’t afraid to criticise as they see fit.

Elsewhere, Danny Mills gave a surprising answer when asked to name Leeds’ most disappointing player.

Tottenham striker Parrott to sit on bench for Ireland against Denmark

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that Troy Parrott will start Monday’s clash with Denmark on the bench but has said that he could have the chance to become a hero, per Irish News.

What’s the word?

Tottenham Hotspur youngster Parrott made his debut for Ireland last week, featuring in the 3-1 friendly win over New Zealand, having played just once for Spurs’ senior side.

However, Monday’s encounter against the Danes brings with it a far higher degree of difficulty.

Indeed, a win for McCarthy’s side would almost certainly see them qualify for Euro 2020, per ESPN, while Denmark are also looking to seal their progress with a victory.

Ireland have not beaten this opposition since 2007 and were thumped 5-1 in a play-off to determine qualification for the 2018 World Cup just two years ago.

McCarthy, though, is hopeful of victory, and Parrott could be given a chance to come off the bench and play a major role in helping his country to next summer’s tournament.

He said: “If the circumstances are right and all the stars are aligned, he might get a chance to come on.

“He might be on the bench and not play and that would be sad for him. [But] It’s an option and when you see his movement, it could be one of those things on a night as it is when it’s made for heroes, he might be the first one.”

Give him a chance, he’ll take it

Parrott is just 17, that must be said.

But at youth level, he’s been scoring goals for Spurs.

He has netted 15 in 13 outings for the U18s, eight in eight for the U19s and four in 13 for the U23s.

The message there is clear: If he gets a chance to score, he’ll likely take it.

And on a night when Ireland will have to be taking the chances that come their way, Parrott could well be their secret weapon off the bench.

A winning goal for the teenager would be what dreams are made of but we’ve seen it happen enough times not to rule it out.

Having hit the back of the net with regularity at junior level for his club, he will be hoping to write his name into folklore at the Aviva Stadium against the Danes.

Aston Villa fans drool over Douglas Luiz’s performance vs Wolves in the Carabao Cup

Aston Villa advanced into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after they defeated local rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers at Villa Park on Wednesday night.

They will face this weekend’s Premier League opponents Liverpool in the next round after Jurgen Klopp’s side defeated Arsenal on penalties having battled out a ten-goal thriller in regulation time.

Anwar El Ghazi and Ahmed Elmohamady got on the scoresheet for Villa with Patrick Cutrone bagging the visitors’ only goal.

Dean Smith rotated his side, giving the likes of Keinan Davis and Ezri Konsa a rare opportunity, but he also kept Trezeguet and Douglas Luiz in the starting line up.

And it was the performance from the Brazilian which has left fans up in B6 literally salivating over his contribution to the win.

One supporter claimed the potential the 21-year-old holds is ‘scary’ while another believed Luiz ran the game from midfield.

‘Sensational’ and ‘absolutely class’ were just two of the other phrases used to describe his showing.

A further member of the Villa Park faithful went as far as saying that the former Manchester City ace was ‘levels above every player on the pitch’ on Wednesday night.

Man Utd move for Inter’s Lautaro Martinez would perfectly fit Solskjaer’s needs

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Manchester United are now interested in signing Inter forward Lautaro Martinez.

What’s the word?

Having allowed both Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez to leave the club in the summer, the Red Devils left themselves considerably short of attacking firepower. Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood have been the men tasked with leading the line for the Red Devils, and whilst there has been a recent resurgence from the from the initial two, the side still looks bereft of goals.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team have scored just 13 goals in their opening ten Premier League games, and so it has been no surprise to see them being linked with a move for a striker. Reports in recent weeks have claimed the club are looking at Juventus’ Mario Mandzukic and Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson as possible options in the January transfer window.

Now, Mundo Deportivo claim the Red Devils are ready to rival Barcelona for the services of Martinez, but that they could face a potential hurdle thanks to Inter’s reported €111m (£95.6m) valuation.

Combative

At just 22-years-old, Martinez is making his presence felt for one of Italian football’s biggest sides. Despite seeing both Lukaku and Sanchez join the club, the Argentine has not let the former United duo steal the limelight away from him this season. The centre-forward has struck seven times in 13 games across all competitions, including a goal apiece against Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Solskjaer is seemingly keen on implementing a fast style of play, with pressing from the front. During pre-season in the summer, the Norwegian remarked: “We’ve been working hard, trying to get the front-foot press and trying to create and score as many goals as possible.”

And no doubt thanks to the Antonio Conte effect, Martinez has been doing that in abundance with Inter. In the Serie A this year, the 22-year-old has averaged an impressive 0.9 tackles per game – considerably more than the 0.2 and 0.7, Martial and Rashford have managed in the Premier League respectively.

Despite standing at just 5 foot 9, Martinez is no stranger to putting himself about, and going head to head with opposition centre-backs. He has averaged one foul per game in the Italian top-flight, and it’s that combative approach that would no doubt endear him to the kind of style Solskjaer wants to employ at United.

Barcelona fans are gushing over Marc-Andre ter Stegen

Barcelona had to fight extremely hard to clinch all three points in their mid-week Champions League clash against Slavia Prague.

Their hosts really gave them a run for their money and nearly salvaged a point for their troubles.

But at the end of the night, the Catalans still took an important win, tallying an extremely narrow 2-1 victory.

The Czechs actually did score twice on the night but unfortunately for them, their second goal ended up rattling the inside of the wrong net, giving Barcelona a chance to secure the triumph.

And while few Blaugrana troops can actually leave Prague with their head held high one of those that surely can is their goalkeeper, Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The German goalkeeper made a total of eight saves on the night, playing a huge role in them securing all three points.

And it didn’t take long for lots of Barcelona fans to recognise his contribution.

They showered him with praise on Twitter, even calling him the best player in the squad at the moment.

Everton’s Lucas Digne showed his defensive resilience for France against Iceland

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Everton’s defending has been suspect of late, with the Blues caught out by set-pieces at AFC Bournemouth and against Burnley, while Sheffield United held firm to withstand the pressure before hitting Marco Silva’s struggling side from a corner and later on with a fast break.

A run of four games without a point after also losing to Manchester City means the Toffees went into the international break inside the bottom three, after sitting narrowly above the drop zone the last time their men departed for duty with their countries, and they will be hoping they are long clear the next time play is interrupted.

Michael Keane failed to cover himself with glory for England, though, with the 26-year-old slammed by former players like Stuart Pearce and Martin Keown after he found himself at fault for both Czech Republic goals, as the Three Lions were beaten in a qualifying fixture for the first time in more than a decade.

But not all of Everton’s international players endured a rough time over the weekend, as Lucas Digne thrived for France in a Euro 2020 Group H encounter with Gylfi Sigurdsson’s Iceland at Laugardalsvollur.

It was a performance highlighting the 28-cap left-back’s defensive resilience which Everton have lacked of late, as no player for either side completed more successful tackles than Digne. The Meaux-born defender won possession with each of his four attempted tackles, per WhoScored data, while Olivier Giroud and Antoine Griezmann led from the front with three successful efforts each.

Digne also shone in clearing his lines, as the 26-year-old ended a 1-0 win over Sigurdsson’s Iceland with the joint-most clearances of any Les Bleus man on three. Moreover, he broke up Erik Hamren’s side’s play with two interceptions.

Ever wondered how modern day skills would cope with the world’s oldest football? Find out in the video below…

Everton’s £18m full-back also managed to display his excellence in attack with a game-high four key balls played, amid a total of 49 accurate passes from 55 balls to teammates.

Silva will be hoping Digne can repeat his efforts against Iceland last Friday with another effort like that for France against Turkey on Monday night, building a vein of form that he can carry with him back on the flight to Merseyside ahead of facing West Ham United.

Barcelona fans want the board to go for Kylian Mbappe over Neymar

An interesting article was published recently by Mundo Deportivo claiming that there’s some sort of an internal discussion over at Barcelona and that they are not totally sure who their transfer target should be.

Apparently, some board members still want Neymar but now the name of Kylian Mbappe has also emerged out of practically nowhere.

And the arguments for the 20-year-old Frenchman are pretty strong: he’s younger, scored more goals last season and can even play in the number nine position, which many of the board members like.

Looking at social media, it’s pretty safe to say they are not alone on that one. Many of the fans are also big Mbappe enthusiasts and they have taken to Twitter to voice their opinions.

Many of them seem to prefer the World Cup winner over Neymar and they were pretty vocal about it.

Not everyone, however, is hopeful that Barcelona can get it done but one thing is for sure: many of them seem to love Mbappe.

Leicester’s James Maddison could be England’s missing piece of the jigsaw

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

England begin their September international break sitting top of Group A after winning their opening two matches, scoring five goals in both of them.

They now face Bulgaria at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, and Gareth Southgate could have a new-look side as a trio of players could earn their first caps for the senior team – Tyrone Mings, James Maddison, and Mason Mount.

None would be more deserving than the Leicester City ace after a standout year occupying the number ten role for the east Midlands club.

His form has continued from last season, and he could become the future of England if given a chance to impress during this break.

On the Chalkboard

Maddison recorded more key passes than any other player in the 2018/19 Premier League season with 100 – seeing him eclipse the likes of Eden Hazard, David Silva, and Christian Eriksen.

He also netted seven goals as well as laying on seven assists as the Foxes enjoyed an upturn in form under Brendan Rodgers, who was only appointed in February.

This season, the 22-year-old has already provided two assists for his team in just four Premier League matches which has clearly contributed to this senior call-up.

England for a long time have lacked a proper attacking midfielder, one that can provide a serious attacking threat.

It’s only really been Dele Alli who has been able to play that role, and before then you’d be going back several years.

If the praise of Paul Gascoigne, an England legend, isn’t enough then what is.

Southgate’s England would be a rather dangerous prospect with Jadon Sancho and Raheem Sterling either side of Leicester’s playmaker.

This England side fell desperately short in the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2018 but Maddison is someone who could prove the missing piece of the jigsaw.

England’s attack has looked potent but still arguably missed a dynamic man at number ten.
