Punjab must topple giants to stay alive

ESPNcricinfo previews the IPL match between Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Daredevils in Dharamsala

The Preview by Kanishkaa Balachandran18-May-2012Match factsSaturday, May 19, 2012
Start time 1600 (1030 GMT)Adam Gilchrist wasted no time in finding his rhythm after an injury layoff•AFPBig PictureKings XI Punjab’s sternest test has been left for last. They came into their final two games needing to win both, first against the defending champions and then this year’s form team, to have any chance of progressing to the playoffs. They duly trampled Chennai Super Kings in Dharamsala to remain in contention, and will need to repeat the performance against Delhi Daredevils on Saturday. Even if they do, they will have to hope for a couple of other results to go their way, to secure their place in the final four.Getting past Daredevils, needless to say, will be a tough proposition. The teams met on Tuesday for the first time, with Daredevils securing an easy five-wicket win. Kings XI did well to pick up four early wickets to give themselves a fighting chance of defending 136, but in the final analysis, their batsmen let them down. They turned it around against Super Kings with a fine bowling effort in seaming conditions. Kings XI’s ground fielding, though, wasn’t impressive.Daredevils fell short by 21 runs in a high-scorer at the Feroz Shah Kotla against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Their bowlers had a tough outing, taking just one wicket and leaking 215. Virender Sehwag sat out due to an illness and Morne Morkel was rested. Their return for the final league match is uncertain. Daredevils can still experiment, considering they’re already through to the playoffs and have made sure they’ll have the added benefit of finishing in the top two. Daredevils’ batting looked vulnerable in spicier bowling conditions in Chennai recently. Dharamsala may not give them much respite.Form guide
Kings XI Punjab: WLWWL (most recent first, completed games)
Delhi Daredevils: LWLWLPlayers to watchAdam Gilchrist had to sit out nine matches to allow his torn hamstring to heal. The wait was worth it as he hammered an unbeaten 64 against Super Kings to pilot Kings XI’s chase, and there were no signs of rustiness as he brought out his trademark cuts and slogs. It had been a sleepy tournament for Ross Taylor until his aggressive 55 off 26 balls at the Kotla against Royal Challengers. Taylor was the only half-centurion for Daredevils in their chase of 216 and his wicket turned out to be the most prized of the evening. His return to form has strengthened Daredevils’ middle-order, which had seemed in dodgy form after Kevin Pietersen’s departure.Stats and triviaDaredevils have the second-best strike-rate this season: 132.35, behind only Royal Challengers BangaloreKings XI’s current leading run-scorer and wicket-taker are Indian players: Mandeep Singh (432 runs) and Parvinder Awana (17 wickets)Quotes”We are underdogs, and we have still managed to beat all the big teams. We always believed in our game and played hard cricket.

Tamil Union, Colts in hot pursuit of leaders SSC

ESPNcricinfo rounds-up the fifth round of matches of the Premier League Tournament 2011-12

Sa'adi Thawfeeq20-Feb-2012Premier League Tier ATamil Union and Colombo Colts kept up the pressure on table leaders Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) by recording their second wins of the season in the ongoing Premier League Tier A tournament. Both teams grabbed maximum points on a rain-hit weekend when the rest of the matches ended in draws.Tamil Union consolidated their second position in the standings with a comprehensive seven-wicket win over defending champions Bloomfield. Two of Sri Lanka’s promising fast bowlers Suranga Lakmal and Isuru Udana combined well to dismiss Bloomfield for a moderate 178 in the first innings after the home team opted to bat. The duo took six wickets between them and received good support from their captain Sachithra Serasinghe who picked up four wickets with his probing offbreaks.Tamil Union were boosted by a career-best knock of 121 by former Sri Lanka Under-19 player Kithuruwan Vithanage. With supporting half-centuries from another former Sri Lanka U-19 player Ashan Priyanjan and Serasinghe, Tamil Union built up a first-innings lead of 154.Lakmal pushed Bloomfield on the back foot with an early breakthrough in the second innings when he got through the defences of in-form opener Dilshan Munaweera for nought off the third ball. From there onwards it was an uphill task for the home team to avoid defeat. Despite a plucky 98 off 120 balls from captain Chamara Silva, Bloomfield could manage only 276 which gave Tamil Union a target of 123.They achieved their target on the third day before lunch after a shaky beginning that saw them lose three wickets for 30 before Priyanjan and Serasinghe steered them home with successive half-centuries in the match. Sri Lanka Test wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene, returning from surgery, displayed great skill behind the wickets to snare six victims, which included five in the first innings.Colts thumped Moors Sports Club by eight wickets at Havelock Park. Dilruwan Perera scored a half-century and grabbed a match haul of eight wickets with his offspin. Colts’ batting was inspired by the two young Silvas (no relation) – Anuk who was unfortunately dismissed hit wicket, ten short of his maiden first-class hundred and Roshen who went onto remain unbeaten on 132 out of Colts’ total of 398.Moors’ first innings was destroyed by tall right-arm quick Kanishka Alvitigala, who recently toured South Africa as replacement for the injured Nuwan Pradeep. In a sustained spell of fast bowling Alvitigala took 4 for 26 off 16 overs as Moors were dismissed for 196.Following-on they slumped to 142 for 7 before a stand of 70 between Udara Peiris and Irosh Samarasooriya saw them avoid an innings thrashing. Left with 51 to chase, Colts got home in eight overs after losing both openers.SSC were denied their second win of the season by some stubborn resistance put up by Ragama Cricket Club’s batsmen led by opener Ian Daniel. After Ragama were forced to follow-on 223 runs in arrears on the first innings, Daniel stuck it out for 209 balls to compile an unbeaten 117, his second century of the season. He received solid support from the lower order as Ragama escaped with a draw scoring 292 for 7 in their second innings.SSC piled up an imposing 425 for 4 declared riding on opener Dimuth Karunaratne’s maiden first-class double hundred – an unbeaten 210 off 285 balls. SSC still maintain a slender lead at the top of the table. Ragama remained in fourth place but had Chilaw Marians breathing down their backs. In spite of their fifth draw of the season, Chilaw Marians picked up valuable points in their game against Badureliya Sports Club at the Surrey Village Ground. Chilaw’s slow-left armer Malinda Pushpakumara took eight wickets in the match to retain his position as the leading wicket-taker of the season with 30 victims from five matches.Nondescripts Cricket Club continued to remain at the bottom of the table after they conceded first-innings points to Lankan Cricket Club in what could be termed as a shock result. After being asked to bat, Lankan CC batsmen rattled up an impressive 424 largely through their openers Ashen Silva, who went onto score a career-best 175, and Deshan Dias, who scored 69 in a stand of 110.Former Sri Lanka player Jehan Mubarak’s undefeated knock of 127 proved a vain effort as Nondescripts could muster only 292. They were dismantled by the pace of former Sri Lanka fast bowler Sujeewa de Silva (5 for 58) and the 22-year-old left-armer Vimukthi Perera who took his first five-for (5 for 69).Premier League Tier BSri Lanka Army moved to the top of the Premier League Tier B standings when they thrashed Sri Lanka Navy by an innings at their home ground in Panagoda. Navy were clueless against the legspin of Seekkuge Prasanna who took ten wickets in the match including 7 for 52 in the first innings to rout the opposition for scores of 119 and 208.While Navy slumped to their first defeat of the season, Burgher Recreation Club capitalized on their chances to move to third slot nine points behind Navy when they beat Colombo Cricket Club by four wickets. Burgher used nine bowlers in each of CCC’s innings.Saracens Sports Club also made steady progress up the table moving to fourth position with their second win. They pulled off a narrow 24-run victory over Panadura Sports Club.Air Force lost their No.3 position when they conceded first-innings points to Police Sports Club in a match where they were lucky to escape with a draw having been reduced to 171 for 8 chasing 266.

No guarantees for Hayden investment

Matthew Hayden’s plans to become a part-owner of the Brisbane Heat Twenty20 franchise are far from guaranteed

Daniel Brettig25-Jul-2011Matthew Hayden’s plans to become a part-owner of the Brisbane Heat Twenty20 franchise are far from guaranteed, despite the air of inevitability that hung over the announcement of his signature to play for the team in next summer’s expanded Big Bash League. So far only the Melbourne Renegades and the Sydney Thunder have got approval to seek minority private ownership of up to 49%, a process that is currently being overseen by the financial services company Credit Suisse.Other teams are presently allowed to negotiate unofficially with potential investors, but that moratorium will end once the Sydney and Melbourne deals are settled. In addition to playing, Hayden wants to align his company The Hayden Way with the Heat as part of what he breathlessly called “a leisure-tainment and entertainment package that has never yet been seen on our shores in cricket”.However Cricket Australia will have to be satisfied, when the time for private investment in the Heat is allowed, that Hayden’s company will provide a worthwhile return.”We don’t know what the timing is going to be, and it is subject to Cricket Australia approval,” a CA spokesman said. “At this stage The Hayden Way is keen, Brisbane is keen, and Matthew Hayden will be first in the queue to be a private investor in the Heat.”Speaking in Brisbane, Hayden made the case for using T20 to secure cricket’s future in Australia by appealing to a wider audience. He also said he had lost interest in international cricket against nations other than England and India, a stark statement from a CA board member.”There’s a lot of things cricket can’t control, the Future Tours Program being one of those, however we can control our domestic content,” Hayden said. “From a commercial point of view most definitely I see this being an enormous success, but it’s key is if it gets mums, dads, families coming to the cricket, enjoying a three-hour proposition, with not the trinkets and the charms but a true value proposition.”I love cricket and have been inspired by cricket my whole life. I love the baggy green, I love what it stands for. However short of the Ashes, and potentially the Indian summer, I’ve said for a long time that I’m largely un-invested in that particular competition. So for me having now first-hand witnessed what that [T20] means as an entertainment proposition, firstly in the IPL and now within the franchise, I know this is going to re-engage our fan base.”If kids, mums and dads and families rock up, then that is an investment they make which adds to them participating in our great game, then we’ll have done everything, both commercially and from a participation point of view.”I think most definitely people are losing interest within the tournaments. I’ll give you a prime example of that, the ICC champions trophy. Australia won that tournament, the first time that trophy’s ever been in the cabinet, and yet do we know about it, we had some idea but it wasn’t the same impact as what it could make. The World Cup is incredibly important within the game, but there are challenges in the landscape, it is a very cluttered landscape.”Australia’s T20 competition had previously been state-based, something Hayden said was part of the pathway towards the national team and not something he was interested in participating in as a player or investor. But, in a somewhat convoluted argument, he also reckoned that his return to the domestic scene would help to educate young players with his many years of experience.”The reason I’ve never been interested in this tournament until now is I’ve always seen it as a pathways program,” Hayden said. “It’s been sat within the stakeholders of the game being the states, and every spot I took up was an opportunity for a youngster to come in and take up that same spot, and I’d been a beneficiary of those wonderful pathway programs that have existed within our country.”Now however this is a different proposition, this is an entertainment package, and it is going to, whether we like it or not, and it already has, competed with all the other franchise sports, and there is going to be some rationalisation over the next two years. I’m looking forward to being part of seeing what best fits for cricket.”When you lose someone like a [Adam] Gilchrist or a [Shane] Warne or a [Justin] Langer or the Waughs, all these players, you lose 20, 30, 40 years of cricket experience. This is why I love the strategic direction of having guys like Darren Lehmann investing back into our great game, because there you’ve got a passionate cricket love who has got an incredible skill set as a player but can also pass information down to our youngsters, which is key to developing any culture.”John Buchanan said when he was coach of Australia and Queensland that his ideal scenario was to become redundant in that role, and he did that by lifting up the younger players into the more iconic positions. I think I can add that value to the dressing room as well.”

Nixon signs one-year Leicestershire deal

Paul Nixon will remain with Leicestershire for at least another year after signing a new contract with the county.”I am absolutely delighted to sign a new deal with the club and I can honestly say that I am as excited now as when I started my professional career in 1987,” he said.Nixon, 40, made his first-class debut with Leicestershire in 1989 and in two stints with the county has managed almost 12,000 first-class runs for them. He was also briefly part of England’s limited-overs team in 2007.”After winning seven Championship games last season, we feel we can push on and are desperate to reach Division One status,” added Nixon, who scored 915 runs in the County Championship last season, and also kept wicket in the Friends Provident t20.”We have a good squad here and the youngsters give us that freshness. It’s important to have a nice balance of youth and experience and that’s why I am pleased to sign on again. We have lots of exciting talent coming through and it is great to be a part of that.”
