Willian rompe ligamento do joelho direito e fica, no mínimo, 6 meses fora

No dia seguinte à confirmação do título brasileiro do Palmeiras, Willian recebeu uma péssima notícia.

Waqar Younis is one of the six confirmed coaching appointments•AFP

Former Pakistan fast bowler Waqar Younis has been confirmed as the coach for the Ruhuna franchise for the inaugural season of Sri Lanka Premier League, according to the organisers Somerset Entertainment Ventures Ltd. Other notable appointments include former Sri Lanka captain Duleep Mendis and Australians Tom Moody and Trevor Bayliss.”Waqar [Younis] is one of six appointments that have been finalised regarding the coaching positions, with only Kandurata province yet to finalise who their coach will be,” Sandeep Bhammer, chief executive of Somerset Entertainment Ventures Ltd, told . “We have a couple of local appointments, with Duleep Mendis coaching Basnahira and Naveed Nawaz will be head coach for Uva.”In addition, and to add to the international flavour of the tournament, Australian’s Shane Duff will be the head coach for Nagenahira, Tom Moody will coach Utuhura and Trevor Bayliss has been appointed as head coach for Wayamba.”The squads for the seven franchises were announced on July 6. A total of 56 overseas players and 107 local players are part of the squads, giving each franchise a preliminary list of 24 players. The tournament is scheduled to start on August 10.

Chanderpaul joins 10,000 club

Shivnarine Chanderpaul has become the 10th batsman and the second West Indian to pass 10,000 runs in Test matches, reaching the mark on the fourth day of the third Test against Australia at Windsor Park in Dominica. In keeping with much of his career, Chanderpaul passed 10,000 in the midst of a desperate Caribbean fight in the fourth innings to stave off defeat at the hands of the Australians on a deteriorating pitch, moving forward from his inimitable stance to push a delivery from Michael Clarke wide of mid-on and go to 14 for his innings. After the day’s play, Chanderpaul said getting past the milestone was a target he had set himself. “I have been batting well and spending a lot of time at the crease, and to reach 10,000 Test runs is something special for me. It was one of the goals I set myself and I believe I have reaped for reward for the hard work I put in over the years.”When I go to bat, I know I have a job to do for the team and the people of the West Indies. Test cricket is the ultimate form of the game and this is where you want to perform and give your best. I will keep striving for more.”Chanderpaul reached the milestone in his 140th Test, emulating Brian Lara’s feat of also passing 10,000 for the West Indies. He was congratulated warmly by the Roseau crowd and also by Australia’s fielders, who all applauded once the single was taken. The 10,000th run also served to take his Test match batting average back above 50.Earlier in the series Chanderpaul had surpassed Lara as the highest run-scorer of all West Indian batsmen at Kensington Oval in Barbados, and said at the time that he had always taken particular satisfaction from runs made against Australia, as they are always hard-earned.”Always a tough, tough opposition and you always have to fight and it is always well to do good against them,” he said. “There are always things at the back of your mind because you always want to do well.”Against an opposition like Australia if you’re doing well against them you know the world is watching. When you go against them you have to bring your A game. You can’t just walk out and decide that you can play anyhow against them. You have to step up.”At 37, Chanderpaul has witnessed many barren years in West Indies cricket, but has expressed optimism that the team is showing signs of significant improvement under the captaincy of Darren Sammy and the coaching of Ottis Gibson. This has encouraged him to prolong his career, having debuted against England in his home country of Guyana in March 1994.”We all can see it, the guys are getting better, the younger players are coming through,” Chanderpaul had said in Barbados. “That’s what we’ve been aiming for over the years, you want to see the younger players come through. Now we’re seeing it and that’s the future, we have to plan that way.”Chanderpaul is doing his best to support this development with his bat, again leading the averages and aggregates against Australia. Their coach Mickey Arthur offered generous praise to a batsman he had first seen on the 1998-99 West Indies tour of South Africa.”Shiv’s been outstanding all series. He’s been quite brilliant really. He’s certainly thwarted our bowlers. He’s shown why he’s got 10,000 runs in Test cricket,” Arthur said. “Very uncomplicated technique even though it looks very weird on the eye. He’s been outstanding – to get him right at the end of the day has just lifted our dressing room hugely.”I first saw him when he was very young. He toured South Africa and he looked a very, very good player then. In my last series that I had with South Africa as coach against the West Indies I think Shiv got a hundred in every first innings so he was well on track. In this series he got a hundred in Barbados, 94 in Trinidad and runs again here. I’ve just seen so much of him and can’t help but admire the application and the desire to keep scoring runs. You’ve got to marvel at that – a fantastic achievement.”

Namibia upset Ireland in close contest

Scorecard
Gary Wilson’s 49 was in vain•ICC/Barry Chambers

Just as they did two years ago at the previous World Twenty20 Qualifiers, Ireland must come from behind to make it to the finals. They lost their first match at the Global Academy Ground in Dubai to Namibia by four runs, with Andrew White failing to hit the last ball for six. In 2010, Afghanistan were Ireland’s conquerors in the opening game, although in the end both teams qualified and met again in the final.Namibia were deserved winners and, as Ireland coach Phil Simmons so shrewdly predicted on Monday, “Namibia will be a dangerous team”. This was the first time Namibia had beaten Ireland in a competitive match; the first six overs (the Powerplay overs) which effectively settled the match. Namibia scored 67 for the loss of just one wicket, including 24 off what proved to be John Mooney’s only over, while Ireland could manage only 39, while losing both openers.Gerry Snyman hit his first two balls to the boundary and was out to the fourth but his replacement did not hold back. Louis van der Westhuizen hit Mooney for successive sixes and Raymond van Schoor, who had already hit Trent Johnston for three fours in an over, finished the fifth with another maximum. With the second wicket stand of 62 (in 39 balls) broken, the scoring was steady rather than spectacular and Ireland captain William Porterfield was happy to chase what he termed a par score of 160.But when Porterfield was needlessly run out in the third over to leave Ireland 14 for 2, the pressure was on the tournament favourites. Kevin O’Brien hit four fours in a stylish 20 but when he and Alex Cusack were both dismissed in the space of 10 balls, Ireland’s target looked a long way away.Ed Joyce didn’t panic but he found the mid-on fielder on the boundary and five runs from 13 balls was suddenly a wasted innings. Ireland, though, bat deep and with Mooney joining Gary Wilson, their fightback began. Mooney, despite hitting 38 off 26, was comfortably outscored by his partner, a Surrey professional.Wilson hit eight boundaries, including three in one over, to reduce Ireland’s target to 27 from the last three overs, still with five wickets left. But crucially, Wilson was now on 49 and, with the landmark in mind, he tamely hit one straight to cover point. Ireland were left to rely on the lower order to keep Mooney company to the finish.Johnston came and went and only five singles came off the 19th over, superbly bowled by Christy Viljoen, leaving 18 to get from the last. Seven came off the first three balls but when Mooney turned for an impossible second, Andrew White, rightly, sent him back and Mooney didn’t make it. White reverse-swept the fourth ball for four but Boyd Rankin was sacrificed next ball to keep White on strike for the last which only found the fielder at deep midwicket.Sorel Burger led from the front in the Namibia attack, bowing his four overs for 21 runs and although Viljoen’s first three overs went for 33, the captain’s faith in him was rewarded with that accurate and ultimately match-winning, penultimate over. The Man of the Match, however, was van der Westhuizen, who followed up his top score of 34 from just 16 balls (three fours, three sixes) with two wickets, including the big one of Wilson, who, after the match put the Ireland defeat down to their bad start in both innings.”They bowled relatively well in the conditions, with a lot of slower balls into the wicket, which is something we can take from the game. I’m happy with my own performance but would have taken nought and a win any day,” Wilson said. “The ball I got was the first from that spinner (van der Westhuizen) that had held up, they had been skidding on.”We like to make it hard for ourselves. We lost the first match last time but we usually work things out in the end and hopefully it happens again this time.”

Haddin advises patience with Lyon

Australia wicketkeeper Brad Haddin has counselled the national selectors to be patient with fledgling spin bowler Nathan Lyon, and said that Lyon has plenty of development ahead before his talent can bloom fully

Offspinner Nathan Lyon is a work in progress, according to wicketkeeper Brad Haddin•AFP

Australia wicketkeeper Brad Haddin has counselled the national selectors to be patient with fledgling spin bowler Nathan Lyon, and said that Lyon has plenty of development ahead before his talent can bloom fully.Lyon, 23, scooped 5 for 34 in his first Test innings but struggled a little in his second, when, according to Haddin, fatigue affected his work. Until this year’s Australian winter, Lyon had never put his body through the rigours of pre-season training, and his slight, wispy frame can only grow in strength and durability.”I think it’s important that we’re patient with him,” Haddin said. “We can’t expect all these spinners to come in and be world-beaters. We’ve just got to make sure we’re clear in what we expect from them and what he expects from himself.”He’s only five games into a first class career but [from] what we’ve seen, he has got good shape on the ball. He is a work in progress so he’s only going to get better and better as time goes on. We all know we’ve got to be patient with the spinners and give them an opportunity to develop.”Haddin said Lyon’s drift was comparable to that of the England offspinner Graeme Swann, but also felt he had some distance to go before he was a fully-formed cricketer.”I think Nathan has obviously got something pretty special in him but he’s obviously got a bit of work to do on his bowling and he knows that,” Haddin said. “It was good that he got the rewards in the first innings; get that first ball out of the way, get his wicket and get into a spell.”From keeping to him, he’s got similar drift to what Swann has. He’s got quite a nice little shape on it … I think he’s got something there that’s going to be pretty good for Australian cricket.”Most of Lyon’s spin bowling apprenticeship took place in the Futures League second XI competition with the ACT, in three-day matches with over restrictions. The questions asked of physical recovery were less taxing; something Lyon discovered when he made his first-class debut for South Australia towards the end of last summer.”He obviously got a bit tired and that could come from the fact he actually hasn’t played that much four-day cricket at all,” Haddin said. “He’s just got to make sure he’s doing what works for him. Whether that’s going outside off stump or going tight into the stumps, because he’s got that natural drift.”I think in the future he’s going to be someone that’s very handy to us but he’s got to develop. We’ve all got to be sure we’re patient with that and not pushing him too quick or expecting him to jump over mountains straight away.”By contrast, Lyon’s childhood friend Trent Copeland looked ready for the physical and mental rigours of Tests, bowling with tremendous consistency throughout the Galle Test without much reward in the wickets column.”With Trent I thought we got exactly what we would have expected over the last two years. Seeing him for New South Wales, he’s very consistent in what he bowls,” Haddin said. “He knows he’s not going to blast anyone out but what he can do is shut a scoreboard down and build pressure from one end so you can roll the other guys from the other end. He did a good job there.”Haddin enlarged upon the tactical battles between Copeland and Sri Lanka’s batsmen, who sought to decrease his effectiveness by batting well down the pitch.”They were batting out of the crease and starting to walk into his line,” Haddin said. “The one thing Trent’s very good at is building pressure and he knows exactly where he wants to put the ball. We wanted to make sure we blocked that end, so we thought the best way sometimes was for me to go up to the stumps to stop them walking into his line, working the ball on the legside to get some pace on the ball.”It seemed to work for the last Test, whether we do the same for this Test, I’m not too sure. Because, especially with the old ball, the wicket was so dead, it just took one of their scoring options out of play and allowed us to build some pressure from that end.”

Chappell's tenure worst phase of my career – Zaheer

Zaheer Khan has said the reign of Greg Chappell as India coach was the most disappointing phase of his decade-long career

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Jun-2011In a revealing insight into one of the most tumultuous periods in Indian cricket, Zaheer Khan has said the tenure of Greg Chappell as India coach was the most disappointing phase of his decade-long career. Zaheer said he was unable to perform during that time as he was constantly worrying about whether or not Chappell wanted him – along with several other senior players – in the team.”It was as if you’ve been framed. It was like ‘we don’t want you in the team. It’s not about performance, we don’t like your attitude, you’re stopping the growth of cricket in the Indian team’. I felt it personally because I was dropped straight after the Sri Lanka tour, even though I had not performed badly,” Zaheer said on show.”I was fortunate enough to go to South Africa to represent the Asia XI [in the Afro-Asia Cup]. I got about nine wickets and I was recalled for the next series. In that phase it was always a struggle. When you’re fighting within the team, when you have a war to fight in your own camp, it is always difficult to win.”Chappell took over as India coach in May 2005 but his tenure – characterised by his zeal to draft in young players – was plagued by serious differences between him and senior players, including Sachin Tendulkar, in the Indian team. He also had a public spat with the then captain, Sourav Ganguly, who was dropped and later recalled. At the end of his tenure, following India’s early exit from the 2007 World Cup, he decided not to seek an extension of his contract. In contrast, Gary Kirsten’s time with the Indian team was “amazing”, Zaheer said. “He has given everyone their space. He’s understood the Indian culture and how we do things. He’s taken that step of coming closer to us rather than dictating. He was our friend, not a coach.”Zaheer Khan: “When you’re fighting within the team, when you have a war to fight in your own camp, it is always difficult to win.”•AFPZaheer felt the only positive to come out of Chappell’s tenure was the inclusion of youngsters in the team. But sacrificing experienced players was not the only way to give opportunities to youth, Zaheer felt. “A youngster coming in is a good sign but not at the cost of a cricketer who is doing his bit.”The county stint with Worcestershire came at the right moment for him, said Zaheer, when he was not feeling confident about his game. The time he spent playing away from the Indian set-up meant he started to enjoy cricket again. He signed up with Worcestershire for the 2006 county season and finished as the highest wicket-taker in Division Two of the County Championship, taking 78 wickets at 29.07.”Worcester taught me the reason I’m playing this game. Sometimes when you play at the highest level, especially in India, the whole country is so passionate about the game, so whether you do well or do badly it affects you in many ways. So when I went to Worcester, it was just me playing cricket.”I was just enjoying cricket and not thinking about other pressures, about the pressure of performance. Everything was falling into place. I was taking wickets. Even though I was not in the Indian side, I was actually happy.”A rejuvenated Zaheer has led the Indian attack since his Worcestershire stint, playing a crucial role in India’s ascent to the top of the Test rankings. The icing has been the 2011 World Cup triumph, in which Zaheer was the tournament’s joint-highest wicket-taker with Shahid Afridi, with 21 wickets. In the World Cup final, he bowled three consecutive maidens at the start of the innings, a contrast to his nervous display against Australia in the final of the 2003 edition.

“It was as if you’ve been framed. It was like ‘we don’t want you in the team. It’s not about performance, we don’t like your attitude, you’re stopping the growth of cricket in the Indian team.'”Zaheer Khan on Greg Chappell’s tenure as India coach

Zaheer said he was young at that time, and got carried away with emotion. “I was only a couple of years into international cricket; the World cup journey itself was something special. That time my thing was to bowl quick. I wanted to be aggressive. It was a World Cup final; there were a lot of emotions. As soon as the national anthem finished, there was this rush of young blood. I wanted to do really well, wanted to just blast the Australians apart.”This World Cup I was aware of the fact that there will be a lot of emotions, I have to deal with it. I have to maintain my calm and focus on the process. I was telling myself just go there and bowl.”Zaheer has sharpened his skills over the years, also becoming a mentor to the younger bowlers in the side. “You cannot run through a side [in the subcontinent]. You need to be patient, you need to understand when to go for the kill.””Early in my career, I used to get really tired in the second innings of a Test. That’s where the fun is. I was not able to deal with that pre-Worcester.”You can’t waste all your energy in the first innings or when a partnership is happening. You need to work on your field placements and know in your mind that the moment you get a wicket, you can go for another one. If you can get two wickets quickly that’s going to change the complexion of the game.”

Sammy keen to restore West Indies pride

Darren Sammy, the West Indies captain, has said his team is keen on restoring its pride during the tour of Sri Lanka where it has arrived for a full series

Darren Sammy, the West Indies captain, has said his team is keen on restoring its pride during the tour of Sri Lanka where it has arrived for a full series. Sammy was appointed captain last month after Chris Gayle, the former captain, turned down a central contract and the West Indies Cricket Board reacted by making significant changes to the team’s leadership; Brendan Nash was named vice-captain in place of Dwayne Bravo, who, too, did not agree to a new WICB deal. Both Gayle and Bravo, however, have been retained in the squad for the Test series.”We want to win, to play well and bring the passion and pride back to the West Indies,” Sammy told reporters upon arrival in Colombo. “We are a little bit inexperienced, young, but we have put in a good preparation work ahead of our coming here. I am looking forward to the practice game.”For us in the Caribbean cricket is more than just a game. All the players who are here are committed and in a way it is the legacy that West Indies cricket holds. We are going to bring back the passion and the pride and also perform for us to take the West Indies team up the ladder.”When asked if he was surprised to be appointed captain, Sammy said: “I wouldn’t say I was surprised. All my life I’ve been dreaming to be a West Indies cricketer. All I want to do was play and represent the West Indies, so being named captain is more of an honour to me.”The squad picked for the Sri Lanka series features several players who didn’t play against South Africa at home earlier in the year, West Indies’ most recent Test assignment. Adrian Barath, the opener who burst onto the international scene with a century on debut against Australia in Brisbane last year, returns after hurting his knee in April.Carlton Baugh, who has not played a Test since 2004, will compete with Devon Thomas for the role behind the stumps, while there was also a maiden call-up for the Jamaica allrounder Andre Russell. The opener Devon Smith, who played his most recent Test in May 2009, is also back after averaging 61.50 while leading West Indies A in the first-class fixtures in England this year.”The selectors have come up with the best team to represent the Caribbean side,” Sammy said. “I am very confident in all the players I have here, likewise all the players are confident in making the team and being here and to give off their best for the West Indies.”West Indies last played a Test series in Sri Lanka in 2005, losing it 0-2. The teams have played 12 Tests against each other, with Sri Lanka holding a 6-3 advantage.Kumar Sangakkara, fresh from the success of a maiden ODI series win in Australia, warned against complacency. “We don’t take any team lightly. We want to win the Test series. We expect nothing but the best from the West Indies and for us to match them.”The tour begins with a three-day warm-up game against Sri Lankan Board President’s XI on November 10, followed by the first Test in Galle. After the three-Test series, the teams play five ODIs, of which the first two will be played in Hambanthota, one of the venues for the 2011 World Cup. They round-off the tour with a Twenty20 international.
