Big picture

If the first half of the South African home Test season was one-sided, the second hasn’t been very competitive. Pakistan are in danger of suffering the same fate as New Zealand, in conceding a series sweep. Such has been South Africa’s dominance that both Tests so far haven’t gone into the fifth day. Pakistan, to their credit, showed fight at Newlands and at one stage, it was the hosts’ turn to sweat and play catch-up. But against the best side in the world, the improved showing wasn’t good enough. The visitors were guilty of taking their foot off the pedal when the advantage was theirs to extend, and their surrender threw up many baffling questions, ranging from team selection to Misbah-ul-Haq’s tactics. For starters, if the Newlands pitch was predicted to be the most favourable among the three Test surfaces for Pakistan, with its tendency to aid spin, why wasn’t Abdur Rehman picked as the second spinner? Rehman was talked about as a likely replacement for the injured Junaid Khan, but he was benched. Saeed Ajmal ended up shouldering the burden of two spinners rather than one, his ten-wicket haul coming in a losing cause. Tanvir Ahmed drew flak for his harmless, 120 kph medium-pacers, who didn’t even have the movement to trouble the batsmen. His was hardly a like-for-like replacement for Junaid and during the Test he looked least likely to get a breakthrough. One player who could have given Ajmal the support needed was Mohammad Hafeez, but he was mysteriously underbowled by Misbah in both innings. Hafeez picked up four in an innings at the Wanderers, but bowled less than 12 overs in the match at Newlands. With the hosts on the brink of victory, Hafeez got one to dart off the rough so much that first slip collected the ball. One wondered about the impact he could have made had he been used effectively as a second spinner. His handling was not properly explained after the game. If Pakistan are to make a fist of the dead rubber at Centurion, they need to recognise their strengths and utilise their players properly, injury permitting of course.A win at Centurion will not only give South Africa their fifth consecutive home Test win but also 50 Test wins for their captain Graeme Smith, who’s now the most successful Test captain in history. South Africa don’t play any Tests till the end of this year and Smith spoke of signing off this season with another win.

In the spotlight

Mohammad Irfan was one of the positives to emerge from the Newlands Test for Pakistan. The 7ft left-armer had an impressive debut, taking three first-innings wickets, but more than the wickets it was the steep bounce and teasing angle across the right-handers that drew notice. Several deliveries clocked in excess of 140 kph and if he can maintain that speed, he could be more than a handful in Centurion. The Decision Review System was a topic of controversy at Newlands, with Jacques Kallis’ dismissal in the first innings causing plenty of confusion, followed by an apology by the ICC’s Playing Control Team stating that he was wrongly adjudged out. While the system has been effective in correcting howlers, loopholes still remain. Both Tests so far have had issues with technology but despite the glitches, both teams are in favour of the DRS.

Team news

Pakistan hinted at a change at the top six, but Misbah, not known to reveal changes on the eve of a Test, stopped short of naming players. Junaid’s return isn’t certain either, though the team manager said he was feeling better. Tanvir’s poor showing might prompt a change, with rookie seamer Ehsan Adil, left-armer Rahat Ali and Rehman in the mix.Pakistan: (probable) 1 Mohammed Hafeez, 2 Nasir Jamshed, 3 Azhar Ali, 4 Younis Khan, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Asad Shafiq, 7 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 8 Umar Gul, 9 Saeed Ajmal, 10 Mohammad Irfan, 11 Junaid Khan/Rahat Ali/Ehsan Adil/Abdur RehmanSouth Africa announced just one change, with Rory Kleinveldt coming in for the injured Morne Morkel.South Africa: (probable) 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Alviro Petersen, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 AB de Villiers (wk), 6 Faf du Plessis, 7 Dean Elgar, 8 Robin Peterson, 9 Vernon Philander, 10 Rory Kleinveldt, 11 Dale Steyn

Pitch and conditions

A typical fast bowler’s strip is expected at Centurion. It has a tinge of green and is expected to be bouncier than Newlands and the high humidity is likely to aid swing. Thunderstorms are expected.

Stats and trivia

  • South Africa have lost just one Test at Centurion since readmission. It came against England after both captains agreed to forfeit an innings each.
  • Jacques Kallis is the highest run-scorer for South Africa at Centurion with 1267 runs at 70.68 with five centuries. He is also the joint second-highest wicket-taker for South Africa at the venue with 31 wickets with Dale Steyn, behind Makhaya Ntini (54).

Quotes

“I’m running out of things to say. I am looking forward to that number growing even more. It’s a great achievement for me and the guys that I have played with.”
“They know the importance of Test cricket. Everybody knows the importance and every team wants to win every game. It’s not about winning series, its about winning every game.”
, does not think South Africa will take their foot off the gas.

Mangal ton sets up comprehensive Afghanistan win

Afghanistan cruised to a seven-wicket win over Scotland at an ICC World Cricket League championship match in Dubai on Wednesday

ScorecardNawroz Mangal’s maiden hundred helped Afghanistan secure an easy win over Scotland•Getty ImagesAfghanistan cruised to a seven-wicket win over Scotland, riding on an unbeaten maiden century from opener Nawroz Mangal and a fifty from Samiullah Shenwari, in their ICC World Cricket League championship match in Dubai.Chasing a target of 200, Afghanistan suffered an early setback after Iain Wardlaw had opener Mohammad Shahzad caught behind in for 19 in the third over. Asghar Stanikzai and Rahmat Shah also fell cheaply and in the 13th over Afghanistan were 59 for 3.Mangal and Shenwari dispelled any fears of a collapse, though, sharing an unbeaten, match-winning stand of 144 runs. Mangal raced to his century, going from 73 to 103 in the space of eight balls. He hit three sixes and a four, taking 25 runs off Preston Mommsen in the 30th over and then dispatched the fourth ball of the 31st over for a four to bring up his hundred. His positive intent rubbed off on Shenwari, who also opened up with a flurry of boundaries to bring up his fifty and take Afghanistan to victory in the 34th over.Afghanistan’s bowlers had played their part in the victory by stifling Scotland after they had chosen to bat, with Gulbodin Naib, Dawlat Zadran and Hamid Hassan making early inroads. Matt Machan and Richie Berrington tried to consolidate the innings by adding 99 runs in 160 balls, but Machan’s wicket triggered a collapse as Berrington and Mommsen were dismissed in quick succession. Scotland were reduced to 141 for 5 from 133 for 2 and some tight bowling from Afghanistan ensured the batsmen struggled for runs in the final overs. Naib took 4 for 31 in nine overs while Hassan and Zadran picked up two wickets each.

Gilbert jumps from New South Wales job

Dave Gilbert has jumped from his position as Cricket New South Wales chief executive

Dave Gilbert has jumped from the position of Cricket New South Wales chief executive, denying recent instability at the association and calls for his sacking by Brett Lee had hastened his decision.Following a special board meeting at the association’s headquarters at the SCG, Gilbert handed in his resignation, stating he had been considering his position for some months.”After 11 successful years, I am now at the point where I am ready to take on a new challenge,” Gilbert said. “This is not a sudden decision – it is something I have been contemplating over the past 12 months. As far as recent commentary is concerned, it comes with the job – and I’ve never shied away from it.”The simple truth is that I’ve been in the role for much longer than most sports administrators could ever dream of. Now that the busiest period of the season has passed, I feel it is right to give the Board ample time and opportunity to search for my replacement.”I have enjoyed many memorable times in the role and it will be sad to leave behind a fantastic team of people who work for a great organisation. I wish them and the game of cricket in NSW the very best for the future.”Having held the role of CEO at Australian cricket’s largest state association since 2001 after being similarly employed with Surrey in England, Gilbert’s position was unsteadied by a series of missteps dating back to the decision to take on a new captain and coach simultaneously at the start of the 2011-12 season.Anthony Stuart was hired as NSW coach ahead of the more experienced Trevor Bayliss, who was keen on resuming the role he had filled before coaching Sri Lanka, while the Australian captain Michael Clarke replaced Simon Katich as state captain, with Steve O’Keefe as his deputy. The Blues struggled through a nightmarish summer, and Bayliss enjoyed great success as coach of the Sydney Sixers in the BBL. Results improved somewhat at the start of this season, but Stuart’s removal as coach in December had the unintended effect of casting harsher light on Gilbert. At this point Lee weighed in with heavy public criticism of Gilbert and the association, his words backed up privately by plenty of other former players. Lee was reported for detrimental public comment, but emerged from his hearing with a place on a NSW board subcommittee formed to allow ex-players to suggest how the state’s performance might be improved. This represented a major setback for Gilbert’s authority, particularly after Lee refused to indicate any support for the CEO following their compromise. A tenure that had been quietly successful for much of its 11-year journey was thus drawn to an end in some acrimony. The association chairman Harry Harinath spoke warmly of Gilbert’s contribution to the state. “David has overseen a period of tremendous growth and development for cricket throughout NSW,” he said. “During his time in charge, participation in the game has increased by 130% and revenue has trebled. The percentage of NSW- originated players in Australia’s male and female Test teams are higher than at any time in the past 30 years.”He is responsible for a number of important achievements that have benefited both those who play the game and those who watch. These include bringing international cricket to ANZ Stadium and extending our footprint throughout the key growth area of Western Sydney with the development of Blacktown International Sportspark.”

Injured Kamrul to miss Bangladesh A series in India

Left-arm fast bowler Kazi Kamrul Islam has sprained his ankle during a training session with Bangladesh A in Mirpur, ahead of their invitational tournament in India. Debashish Roy, the Bangladesh Cricket Board doctor, said it would take three weeks for Kamrul to recover, meaning he will miss the Indian tournament, which begins on July 27.Kamrul has 120 wickets in 38 first-class matches for Chittagong, and was picked for the Bangladesh A side after finishing with 26 wickets in seven matches in the 2011-12 season’s National Cricket League. He is set to be replaced by pace bowler Robiul Islam, who was among the four standbys for the squad. Sylhet’s Robiul has played three Tests, and taken 144 first-class wickets in 47 matches.

Nicola Browne back in international fold

Nicola Browne, the New Zealand bowler, has decided to return to international cricket. The decision is a remarkable U-turn after retiring seven months ago

Nicola Browne, the New Zealand bowler, has decided to return to international cricket despite announcing her retirement seven months ago. She discovered she was suffering with celiac disease, changed her diet and is now hungry to play for New Zealand once more.Browne, 28 from Waikato, felt “the flame inside her had been extinguished” when retiring in August 2011. The news came as something of a shock after rising to sixth on the world bowling rankings and being named Player of the Tournament at the 2010 Women’s World Twenty20.”I wasn’t tracking where I should have been,” Browne said. “I was plagued with health problems and just couldn’t get my energy levels right.” She thought her health problems stemmed from Temporomandibular joint disorder and reached a low point after the Christchurch earthquake of February 2011, prompting her departure from the game. But a joint disorder proved not to be the problem. Browne changed doctors and was found to be suffering with celiac disease – where gluten in the body damaged the lining of the small intestine causing fatigue.A simple change of diet did the trick. “I had more energy that I could ever remember having,” Browne said. “It was like I had been living my life at only 70%.” Pasta and pizza went off the menu as part of her new gluten-free regime that provided new-found energy and a reignited passion for cricket.Browne returned to action with seven wickets at 16.85 for Northern Districts and now has her sights on an international recall and becoming a professional. “I’ve found myself,” she said. “And I’ve found the energy to go and achieve beyond where I reached before, and bring others along for the journey.”

Scorchers seal home semi-final with huge win

Perth Scorchers obliterated Sydney Thunder to secure their fifth consecutive win and ensure a home semi-final

The Report by Alex Malcolm11-Jan-2012
ScorecardNathan Coulter-Nile broke Sydney Thunder’s innings with three quick wickets•Getty ImagesPerth employed a scorched-earth policy at Stadium Australia tonight. Even without star-import Herschelle Gibbs, they obliterated Sydney Thunder to secure their fifth consecutive win and ensure a home semi-final.Gibbs, with three half-centuries in five innings in the Big Bash, withdrew before the game began due to a foot injury, but his absence was not felt after Scorchers steamrolled Thunder for just 99. The home side could not bat out their twenty overs after choosing to bat.Scorchers were white-hot with the ball and in the field, led by Nathan Coulter-Nile. The 24-year-old quick bowled with great pace and energy on a sluggish drop-in pitch. He knocked over Thunder’s much-vaunted top three. First to fall was Usman Khawaja, who nicked a delivery that climbed a little higher than expected. Not all were convinced about the edge, Coulter-Nile did not even appeal, but Luke Ronchi was certain as he gleefully accepted the catch.Second to fall was Chris Gayle. The Jamaican looked in ominous touch again, having reached 20 with two fours and a six. But a big swipe at Coulter-Nile yielded only a thin outside edge. Umpire Mick Martell initially shook his head but was over-ruled by the third umpire based on camera footage only. There is no traditional challenge system in place, but there is a form of review in exceptional circumstances. Martell changed his decision, via information from the third umpire, to send a perplexed Gayle on his way to a chorus of boos from 12,000 fans. There was no doubt about Coulter-Nile’s third scalp. Four balls after Gayle’s departure Daniel Smith drove, with his feet anchored, at a 143kph carrot wide of off stump. Mitchell Marsh pouched the very sharp edge at slip with ease. Coulter-Nile had 3 for 6 from 12 balls and Thunder were half way down a very slippery slope at the conclusion of the sixth over. The most energetic 40-year-old in Australia, Brad Hogg, was introduced in the seventh over and he bamboozled the two left-hand batsmen, Ben Dunk and Jason Floros, with a mixture of sharp turning leg-breaks and exceptional wrong-un’s. Floros had no luck playing straight. So he elected to sweep and was promptly bowled by Hogg.Luke Butterworth then took on Hogg with a strange hit and run. Hogg ran him out in the manner of Jonty Rhodes in his prime. It was the first of four direct hit run-outs from Scorchers. Nathan Rimmington accounted for Dunk, before Coulter-Nile twice swooped with elegance, and ease, to pull off two direct hits in six balls to end the innings. Few fast bowlers can field with as much skill, fluidity, and grace as Coulter-Nile. He deserved to be named Man of the Match.Perth only looked vulnerable in the match for one fleeting moment. Luke Ronchi was clean bowled by Scott Coyte with the second ball of the chase. Thereafter it was all Marcus North and Marsh. The pair cruised to the target with 35 balls to spare. Marsh was particularly destructive hitting five sixes in his unbeaten 64. Anything fractionally short or angled down leg side was dispatched with raw power over the square boundary. Just to prove his abilities were not limited to one zone he hit two sixes off Trent Copeland in three balls. The first sailed down the ground over straight long-on, the second was clubbed inside-out over cover.North remained the silent partner, but a slog-sweep off Floros over midwicket showed he also had the power to clear the rope. His dexterity to glide Coyte to the third-man boundary to seal victory epitomised how easy the win was for Scorchers.

Grama sempre crescendo e aparada: segredos do bem avaliado Morumbi

We'll be better prepared against spin – Gibson

West Indies will be better prepared to combat India’s spin threat in the upcoming ODI and Test series, coach Ottis Gibson has said

ESPNcricinfo staff27-May-2011

West Indies had a torrid time against the Pakistan spinners•Associated Press

West Indies will be better prepared to combat India’s spin threat in the upcoming ODI and Test series, coach Ottis Gibson has said. The West Indies batsmen proved vulnerable against spin during the drawn Test series against Pakistan, losing 32 of their 40 wickets in the two games to slow bowlers. They face a spin-heavy Indian one-day squad, which includes offspinners Harbhajan Singh and R Ashwin, legspinner Amit Mishra, and part-timers Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma.”It is not a lot of time but we have got a lot of players that have played spin and made runs against spin before,” Gibson told the. “People just have to be clear what their game plan is against spin and back themselves and their ability.”The key to overcoming the spin threat, said Gibson, was to rotate the strike, something West Indies had struggled to do during the Tests against Pakistan. “Sometimes, we look very tentative and we sort of lock ourselves in a hole and then our only response is to try to hit ourselves out of the hole. We have got to find the balance between attack and defence,” he said.”They are setting us up, working us out and getting us out quite easy so we need to be able to rotate the strike against the spinners a lot more and make sure that the bowlers aren’t bowling too many balls in succession to us.”The batsmen tackled spin quite comfortably in the nets, Gibson added. “We practice very well in the nets and guys chip down the wicket to the spinners in the nets, hit the ball over the top and hit the ball through the covers with ease,” he was quoted as saying by . “But once the game starts, it seems always to be something that has held us back, certainly for the last couple of series that I have been involved in.”The Indian tour of West Indies begins with a Twenty20 international on June 4 in Trinidad. The teams then play five ODIs and three Tests.
