Leicestershire captain Josh Cobb hit a career best unbeaten 67 to end Nottinghamshire’s 100 per cent record in the Friends Life t20 clash at Grace Road.Cobb led by example, clubbing seven fours and a six in his 52-ball innings, as Leicestershire chased down a victory target of 159 with 14 balls to spare. Bangladesh star Shakib Al Hasan struck a blistering 43 off 21 balls in a fourth-wicket stand of 67 with Cobb as the Outlaws lost for the first time in five games in the competition this season. For once their powerful batting line-up failed to fire. Samit Patel top scored with 50 off 32 balls but Nottinghamshire could only post a below-par total of 158 for 6 after being put into bat.Alex Hales and Michael Lumb gave them a good start putting on 41 in the first five overs, with Lumb hitting two sixes off Anthony Ireland. But once Lumb skied a catch off Rob Taylor and was out for 23, and Hales edged behind off Shakib for 27, the momentum went out of the visitors’ innings.Patel and James Taylor (33 off 32 balls) did their best to step up the pace, but some tight bowling from Shakib, Cobb and Shiv Thakor kept Nottinghamshire in check. Thakor with some accurate medium paced seamers dismissed Patel, Chris Read and Steven Mullaney to finish with 3 for 30.The last 10 overs only brought Nottinghamshire 69 runs and Leicestershire made light work of the chase after a bad start when Greg Smith edged behind in Luke Fletcher’s opening over. Cobb and Joe Burns put on 55 in the next six overs before Burns, dropped when he had made just seven, was caught at cover off Mullaney for 26.Niall O’Brien was stumped for 14 going down the pitch to left arm spinner Graeme White but that proved to be the Outlaws’ last success. Cobb, dropped twice, made the most of his fortune, reaching his 50 off 38 balls.Shakib hammered three fours and three sixes in his whirlwind 43, with Cobb striking the winning runs off the fourth ball of the 18th over to give the Foxes their second win in six games.

BCCI suspends trio, Srinivasan says IPL not 'untenable'

Three Rajasthan Royals players, Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila – who were arrested and sent to police custody of their alleged involvement in corruption in the IPL – have been suspended by the BCCI

Three Rajasthan Royals players – Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila, who were arrested for their alleged involvement in corruption in the IPL, have been suspended by the BCCI.The BCCI said the IPL Governing Council had met and decided to suspend the three players pending an inquiry. “As of now, the three players Ankeet Chavan, Ajit Chandila and Sreesanth stand suspended pending enquiry. All information required to bring the persons involved to book will be collected and strictest action will be taken, if found guilty,” a press release from the board said.Addressing the media, BCCI president N Srinivasan said he was shocked by the news but did not agree with the suggestion that the IPL had become untenable. He also said it was “truly sad” that this incident had occurred given that the BCCI had banned five domestic players last year for being caught in a sting operation.”We have an anti-corruption code, an anti-doping code. We have advised state units to take steps. But you see the people involved, they are Ranji players and one is a Test player, that is what is shocking,” Srinivasan said. “We acted the moment we got information the Delhi police had arrested the three players. Apparently an FIR [first information report] has been filed but we haven’t seen it. We have extended all co-operation to police and other agencies if they want any information from us.”When asked about the reports of several other players being involved, Srinivasan said the police had given the BCCI no such information yet. “As far as these three cricketers are concerned, keeping in mind natural justice has to be preserved, we will take action as per our rules and procedures. As for other cricketers we have no information from the police. If information comes to the BCCI, we will act immediately.”I am also equally sad, as all my colleagues are in the BCCI, that a player who played Tests for India is involved. But that does mean that the entire game is corrupt. I do not agree at all. I do not agree the IPL cannot continue. We will take all steps to root out this kind of corruption. To make a sweeping statement the IPL is untenable, I do not agree.”We thought when we made an example last year that the message was clear and people would not indulge in such things. It is truly sad. We will take whatever steps necessary for people to understand this is a serious matter and they can get into trouble.”When asked whether the players were more vulnerable to corruption during tournaments like the IPL, and whether the BCCI was doing enough policing, Srinivasan said the board would endeavour to do more. “We will examine what further regulation can be done. As far as player access, we have the same code as in international cricket. We will examine if we need to take more steps.”We have to examine and see objectively what else we can do, what further steps we can take, and how we can demonstrate that this sort of action doesn’t pay at all. There’s a lot of work for us to do.”ICC chief executive Dave Richardson said that the body would extend their full support to the investigation. “The ICC will provide full support to the BCCI and Delhi Police in this investigation. The BCCI’s decision to suspend its three cricketers on corruption charges is a clear indicator of the ICC and its Members’ zero-tolerance approach,” Richardson said in a media release. The ICC and its Members have collectively taken measures to tighten vigilance, strengthen our anti-corruption codes and increase player education programmes as well as offering strict penalties to those found guilty of illegal conduct.”As such, it is disappointing to see that despite the extensive education programmes delivered by the ICC and the BCCI, there still appears to be some players who remain vulnerable to temptations. We have always maintained that the real battle is against the unscrupulous individuals who are preying on the susceptible players.”YP Singh, head of ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) said that more players were reporting approaches to authorities, a sign that allowed for the “confidence to believe that the vast majority of players are playing the game in the right”.India’s Sports Ministry called for the IPL authorities to hand out punishments that would serve as deterrants if the players were found to be involved. “It is very unfortunate that Delhi Police have arrested some cricket players for their alleged role in the spot fixing in the ongoing IPL tournament,” the Ministry said in a statement. “The Minister of Sports, Shri Jitendra Singh has spoken to chairman of the IPL Shri Rajeev Shukla on the issue and impressed upon him to take urgent steps to put in place a mechanism to prevent such unethical activities and ensure clean sports in the country. The Minister also emphasised that strict action be taken against all those who are found guilty to serve as a deterrent to others.”After initially neglecting the concern raised by the ICC’s anti-corruption and security unit (ACSU) the BCCI officially allowed them to function in the IPL from 2010. In 2012, the BCCI set up its own anti-corruption unit, with former ACSU chief, Ravi Sawani in charge and his team has been present at various venues from this edition of the IPL. It is understood Sawani’s team had no role to play in the Royals’ players investigation, as it was an independent action by the Delhi police.

Farhan, Nawaz and Abrar heroics put Pakistan 2-0 up

The series win over Bangladesh is Pakistan’s first at home in three years

Mohammad Isam30-May-2025Pakistan won their first T20I series at home after three years when they beat Bangladesh by 57 runs in the second game in Lahore. Sahibzada Farhan and Hasan Nawaz struck fifties to set up Pakistan’s 201 for 6, before Abrar Ahmed’s three wickets sparked a collapse that saw Bangladesh go from 44 for 0 to 56 for 5 in three overs.Tanzim Hasan Sakib, in at No. 9, struck his maiden T20I fifty to finish as the innings’ top scorer for the visitors. He became the first batter to score a half-century from No. 9 or lower in T20Is for a Full Member nation. Tanzim’s 50 came off 31 balls, with five sixes, after he came to bat with the side reeling on 77 for 7 in the tenth over.It was Pakistan’s batting that was more entertaining, with Farhan hitting a superb 74 off 41 balls, that included six sixes. He added 103 runs for the second wicket with Mohammad Haris who made a 25-ball 41, before Nawaz struck the ball cleanly for his unbeaten 51.

Farhan rides on PSL wave

Farhan had a bit of luck in the first over when Tanzid Hasan couldn’t latch on to his top edge running back from cover. He would enjoy another piece of luck after he completed his first T20I fifty, but it was a memorable knock from the opener who had just top-scored with 449 runs at a strike rate of 152.20 in the PSL.Litton Das was part of a spectacular collapse•AFP/Getty Images

Pakistan also got some luck when left-arm quick Shoriful Islam left the field after bowling three balls with a groin injury. Farhan launched Mehidy Hasan Miraz for two successive sixes in the third over, before slamming Hasan Mahmud for two fours and a six in the following over. Another six came off Tanzim, before Haris struck Mahmud for three fours in a row in the sixth over. Their 67 runs in the powerplay equaled Pakistan’s highest in the powerplay against Bangladesh, from a game in Nairobi in 2007.Farhan struck two more sixes off Rishad, before Tanzim broke the 103-run second wicket stand. He removed Haris (41 off 25 balls) with a slower legcutter that he struck straight to point. Farhan was caught behind in the next over, when he under-edged Rishad, who was otherwise quite expensive.

Bangladesh slow the tide

Bangladesh were in danger of conceding a big 200-plus score, especially seeing how Pakistan captain Salman Agha and Hasan kept finding the big hits after the two set batters fell in quick succession. Salman timed Rishad for two fours, before Nawaz managed to toe-end a six off Mehidy. He slammed Rishad for a four and six in the 14th over, but they relatively slowed down in the last five overs.Pakistan got only two fours and a six in this period. Mahmud yorked Salman who was trying to play a ramp shot, before Shadab fell trying to clear long-on. Nawaz got to his half-century in the last over, but Tanzim finished well with the wicket of Faheem Ashraf.Abrar Ahmed picked three quick wickets•Associated Press

Pakistan stave off quick start

Tanzid got Bangladesh off to a flyer with 17 runs from the first over of their 202-run chase. He struck Salman for two fours, before slamming him for a six over extra cover to end the over. Tanzid kept up the pressure against Hasan Ali who went for 15 in the second over, before striking Ashraf through point for another boundary.Haris Rauf struck back in his first over, removing Parvez Hossain Emon for 8. Hasan took a good catch tracking back from mid-on, as Parvez skied the ball quite high over his head. Ashraf then removed Tanzid with a half-tracker, which the left-hander just swung into short fine leg Abrar’s lap in the fifth over. The onus was on captain Litton Das to build on the rapid start but he first lost his cool at his batting partner Towhid Hridoy for refusing a single. Next ball, he toe-ended a pull straight to mid-on. Bangladesh had given away a good start, and it was about to get much worse.

Abrar rips through middle-order

Abrar was struck for two sixes in his first over in the first T20I, but this was a different story. He spun one through Hridoy’s to trap him lbw for 5. Hridoy had a word with the umpire, but replays showed it was quite adjacent to the stumps. Abrar got another lbw decision next ball, a much easier one for the umpire, when Jaker Ali failed to read his googly. It was a rare failure for Jaker, who is Bangladesh’s form batter in the middle order.Shamim Hossain staved off the hat-trick ball but struck one down Saim Ayub’s throat at deep midwicket in Abrar’s next over. Rishad was gone next over, caught behind chasing a wide one from Shadab. From there, it was just about damage control for Bangladesh.

Langer hopes to halt Hogan deal

Justin Langer, the former Australia batsman and Western Australia coach, will do “everything he can” to stop Michael Hogan joining Glamorgan this summer.

Justin Langer, the Western Australia coach, will do “everything he can” to stop Michael Hogan joining Glamorgan for the English season.Hogan, a 31-year-old fast bowler, is set for a move to Glamorgan on a two-year deal as a British passport holder. The contract requires him to forego playing as a domestic cricketer in Australia. But Langer is desperate to keep him in Perth, describing him as a cornerstone of the Western Australian attack who could also help mentor the state’s youngsters. “He’s our best bowler,” Langer said. “I am doing everything I can to talk him into staying.”Hogan has taken 117 first-class wickets at 28.57 in his career and has 17 wickets at 27.61 in this season’s Sheffield Shield, where Western Australia sit bottom of the table.Should he make a u-turn it would replicate the decision of Alviro Petersen, the South Africa batsman, who had signed a similar deal with Glamorgan only to decide he would remain as a South African-based player after all.Such recruitment decisions will be analysed by former Somerset director of cricket Brian Rose, who has been appointed to conduct an independent review of Glamorgan.Rose, who left his post at Somerset at the end of last season, will review, among other things, the coaching structure and player development pathway. He will meet key figures from the county and his initial findings are expected by the start of April.”Brian has extensive cricket experience and is widely respected,” Glamorgan chief executive Alan Hamer said. “We are delighted that he has agreed to help with this review, which underpins our respective strategic plans.”Cricket Wales chief executive Peter Hybart added: “We welcome Brian’s involvement and are committed to increasing the numbers of talented young cricketers capable of playing professional cricket for Glamorgan.”

Broad 'fit and good' for England return

Stuart Broad has arrived in New Zealand “fit and good” to return to England duty

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Jan-2013Stuart Broad has arrived in New Zealand “fit and good” to return to England duty.Broad has not played since the second Test in Mumbai in November, where his 0 for 60 was his second consecutive wicketless Test. Broad was subsequently dropped for the second time in his career.A heel problem prevented his return as captain for the T20 series, which England drew 1-1 with Eoin Morgan leading the side, before snow denied him the chance to re-join his colleagues in India for the final two matches of the ODI series. The poor weather has hindered Broad’s training programme, so he is glad to be back in warmer climes, arriving a few hours ahead of the rest of the squad who travelled direct from India following Sunday’s final ODI.”I have not done any outdoor running because it has been a bit hazardous at home,” Broad said. “But I feel pretty good and look forward to getting going and excited to be here. With the snow back home it has been tricky to really test anything.”It was disappointing not to get out to India and do some outdoor bowling ready for this tour but we have plenty of time to do some work here leading into the warm-up games and the first Twenty20.”England play two warm-up matches on February 4 and 6 before the first of three T20s on February 9 in Auckland. It will be the first time Broad has captained England since they tumbled out of the World T20 at the Super Eights stage in October.Broad will be hoping for a return to form after averaging 39.72 with the ball and 14.00 with the bat in his last full Test series – against South Africa in July and August. He has also been short of one-day cricket having missed the ODI series with South Africa in September. His overs at the World T20 were taken for 7.42 runs each.Short of match-practise, Broad’s first task is to feel satisfied that his heel injury has recovered. “When you’ve not played cricket for five or six weeks, I suppose you go into a game a little bit unsure,” he said. “I have done quite a lot of treadmill running, and a lot of spinning, so I’m fit. I just need to test out the impact of it.”We’ve got well over a week till the first Twenty20 game, and that should be plenty to get it right.”Broad travelled to Adidas headquarters in Germany to have his boots moderated to help ease the strain. “I have had a bit of adjusting to the foam inside the boot and we will see how that goes outside,” he said. “But I have bowled five or six spells of six or seven overs indoors, which felt good. And you’d have thought indoor bowling would be as big a test on the heel as anything.”I feel fit and good, so where I am at now I feel ready to go.”Longer term for Broad there is the challenge of trying to regain his Test place in what is likely to be a three-man pace attack alongside James Anderson and Steven Finn. It was Finn who initially replaced Broad in India and then Tim Bresnan played the final Test although he is absent from this tour.Broad began 2012 in impressive form with consistent performances against Pakistan in the UAE and then claimed 11 wickets against West Indies at Lord’s before having less of an impact against South Africa and conceded being dropped in India was the right decision.”I’m quite relaxed, and I know that if I bowl well and hang in there and do the right things in training, then wickets come your way,” Broad said. “I had a really good start, first half of the year, and was the leading seamer in the world.”Then I went three innings without taking a wicket in India and lost my place. That happens and it was probably a good decision, looking back, to leave me out.”Finny came in and bowled really nicely. Then I picked up that little injury before the final Test match. Personally, the tour didn’t go ideally to plan. But we won the Test series and left happy.”

Quick Indian-visa process likely for Pakistan fans

Pakistan’s whistle stop two-week, five-match tour of India that starts on Christmas Day in Bangalore could be kicked off with the 3000 Pakistani ticket-holders for the series being issued Indian visas in less than ten days. The Pakistan tour of India, featuring two T20 Internationals in Bangalore and Ahmedabad, and three ODIs in Chennai, Kolkata and Delhi, has been pushed through via the highest levels of the government and cricket administration on both sides of the border. The PCB will be issued the 3000 tickets and will soon finalise and announce the mechanism to be put in place for the sale of the tickets. Of the total 3000 tickets, there will be 1000 for the match in Delhi and 500 for each of the other four cities. Pakistan citizens holding tickets to all five matches will be issued five-city visas, an unusual diplomatic practice in itself. An announcement on a quicker visa-issuing process for the cricket is expected in a few days’ time.A four-man PCB recce team concluded its visit of India on Thursday, after travelling to each of the venues where the matches will be held. Ehsan Sadiq, the PCB’s director of security and vigilance is the head of the delegation which includes Usman Wahla, manager international cricket, Sohail Khan, senior police officer of the Punjab Police and Nadeem Sarwar, general manager, media. Sarwar said that the issue of security will largely be left in the hands of the hosts. “What we expect is fool-proof security for our players, and we expect that the capability that these cities have will provide that.”The PCB recce team’s chief concerns were more related to practice facilities and net bowlers, and ensuring that team hotels clear out mini-bars. There was, Sarwar said, no strict ‘ban’ on players socialising or attending private parties. “We would discourage individuals from socialising because it’s going to be a very busy tour – five matches in 14 days. It’s not like there’s a ban or a restrictive list [of activities] on the tour, because there is very little time for socialising.”He said the future of Indo-Pak cricketing relations depended on India: “The ball will now be in their court.” As for international cricket in Pakistan, Sarwar said that the PCB was confident that teams would start visiting Pakistan “very soon”. “It is, at the moment, just a question of perception. We are in negotiations with several boards. Teams will start coming to Pakistan, hopefully soon.”On this tour, the Pakistan team, Sarwar said, wanted to redress their recent poor record against India: India had won the previous four games between the teams – two Asia Cup ODIs, the 2011 World Cup semi-final and a World T20 group match in September. The PCB team met with BCCI president N Srinivasan in Chennai and were in Kolkata two days before the Test match between India and England. Jagmohan Dalmiya, the former BCCI president and president of the Cricket Association of Bengal, told the PCB team that he appreciated the role played by PCB chief Zaka Ashraf’s in pushing the series through. The May and June meetings between Ashraf and Srinivasan led to the announcement of a schedule for the series, which is sandwiched between England’s Test and ODI tour of India. In September, Ashraf met with the-then Indian foreign minister, SM Krishna, in Islamabad and two months later, the Indian high commissioner to Pakistan travelled to Lahore for discussions on visa issues with PCB officials.

Sri Lanka's first-class matches postponed

Sri Lanka’s domestic first-class Premier Tier A and B league matches, which were to begin on Wednesday, have been indefinitely postponed. This is the latest twist to the troubles afflicting Sri Lankan cricket, and the clubs and national board have offered conflicting reasons for the postponement.SLC’s head of cricket operations, Ashley de Silva, told ESPNcricinfo that the clubs requested a postponement on the grounds that there would be “too much cricket following the end of the Premier limited-overs tournament”. The tournament, he said, would be rescheduled only after the elections on January 3, when a new tournament committee would be appointed. On the other hand, the clubs handed over a signed statement of their problems and demands to Udaya Seneviratne, the authority appointed by the Minister of Sports to administer the SLC until elections are held. The four services teams were exempted from signing the petition.Club co-ordinator Ranjan Paranavitana said that the clubs were protesting against outstanding payments and the ad hoc manner in which the matches have been scheduled.”We have to play a [three-day] match every three days and this is not feasible,” Paranavitana said. “A lot of players face problems taking leave from work, and the players also risk burnout and injuries with no proper break between matches.”The clubs were paid 30% of their dues for the Premier limited-overs tournament which concluded on Saturday, and have said that unless at least 60% of the balance is paid, they would find it difficult to play the first-class matches. The SLC pays 2.7 million Sri Lankan rupees to each of the 11 Tier A clubs and 2.3 million to each of the 10 Tier B clubs per season. The clubs utilise this money to pay the players, ground fees, fund practice sessions and food, among other things.
