Ansari hints at new dawn for Surrey

A first-class best score from Zafar Ansari secured a draw for Surrey after they were forced to follow-on at Edgbaston

George Dobell at Edgbaston30-Jul-2012
ScorecardZafar Ansari began his career in the one-day arena for Surrey but is now getting an opportunity in first-class cricket•Getty ImagesPerhaps the darkest hour really does come just before the dawn. After a grim period in the history of Surrey cricket, the first rays of light began to reappear as three young players resisted for an entire day to salvage a draw in testing circumstances. While nothing will ever compensate for the horror of recent weeks, it surely bodes well for Surrey’s future that they have the likes of Zafar Ansari, Rory Burns and Jason Roy coming through. After following-on 285 runs behind, the trio helped Surrey bat throughout the final day for the loss of only three wickets and secure a draw that could prove crucial at the end of the season.20-year-old Ansari, who resisted for 88 overs for his unbeaten 83, was particularly impressive, but the contributions of Burns, aged 21, and Roy, aged 22, were also admirable. Not long ago, none of them might have expected to play in this game, but now they are the men on which the future of this great club will be built. Ansari, whose innings lasted 257 balls and more than five hours, bears more than a passing resemblance to Justin Langer at the crease and is wonderfully compact, calm and composed. He has obvious leadership potential and a bright future. There was more good news for Surrey off the pitch. Chris Tremlett will not require surgery on his knee and could be back in action within a couple of weeks, while Rory Hamilton-Brown will play for Surrey second XI in a limited-overs game tomorrow. He could make a first team return at Trent Bridge as early as Wednesday.Speculation about Chris Adams’ future as director of cricket is also well wide of the mark. Adams, after helping his team through the most fierce period of grief, has taken a break in Portugal after he was advised by the club’s chief executive, Richard Gould, that a break would do him good. Sometimes we ask an awful lot of out sportsmen and forget they are as fragile and flawed as anyone else: Surrey surely deserve credit for some compassionate man management. It is also worth reflecting on the contribution of MCCUs to cricket in England and Wales. Both Burns and Ansari have benefitted from the MCCU system – Burns from Cardiff; Ansari from Cambridge – with the latter crediting the excellent facilities, the early opportunity to play first-class cricket and the opportunity to continue his studies as crucial factors in his development. Despite receiving no funding from the England and Wales Cricket Board, the MCCUs help produce just under 24% of England-qualified cricketers. They rely heavily on grants from the MCC. “There’s no way I would be doing this if it wasn’t for the MCCUs,” Ansari said. “I really don’t know what I would have done had I had to pick between cricket and university.”Ansari admitted, however, that he had enjoyed some fortune in the course of compiling his maiden Championship half-century and his highest first-class score. Most pertinently, he should have been given out on the third evening when he edged one from Patel to William Porterfield at slip. “I don’t feel too guilty about it,” Ansari said. “I wasn’t absolutely sure that the ball carried and that idea than anyone else would have done anything else amuses me. Most of the Warwickshire players said ‘well played’ at the end.”Roy also impressed. He gave it away in the first innings, buckling under pressure and driving to mid-off. But, in the second innings, he resisted a couple of nasty spells from Boyd Rankin and Rikki Clarke that tested not just a batsman’s bravery, but their technique and calm, too. Zander de Bruyn, by contrast, looked most uncomfortable against the short ball and fell slog-sweeping to a catch in the out field; an odd shot for an experienced batsman trying to save a game. This was a somewhat disappointing day for Warwickshire. Perhaps the fact that they bowled in excess of 180 overs in succession and the fact that they play again on Wednesday might have drawn some of the sting from the attack, but it was hard to fault the bowlers. They toiled away with persistence and skill, but were defeated by a combination of a slow wicket, some obdurate batting and some errors in the field. A conservative estimate would suggest that four chances – mostly difficult and mostly off Jeetan Patel – were spurned on the last day. While Rankin beat Burns for pace and Patel found the outside edge of Arun Harinath, on such an unforgiving wicket they could not afford to spurn even half chances.Suffice it to say that Tim Ambrose, Warwickshire’s first choice keeper, was sorely missed. He is highly likely to return for Warwickshire’s next game, at Uxbridge from Wednesday, with his deputy, Richard Johnson, likely to go back to Derbyshire on loan. In pursuit of the first team opportunities he requires to develop his career, Johnson may well need to find a new club in the coming weeks. Patel, meanwhile, is in talks with Warwickshire about returning as overseas player in 2013.The draw leaves Warwickshire, with a game in hand, equal on points with Nottinghamshire at the top of the table. The two sides have to play each other home and away before the season is done in encounters that may well settle the Championship.

BPL will put local players in spotlight – Dean Jones

Dean Jones, technical director of the Chittagong Kings, has said the tournament will help young Bangladesh players, as they will have the opportunity to play alongside international stars

Dean Jones, the former Australia batsman and technical director of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) franchise, the Chittagong Kings, has said the tournament will help young Bangladesh players, as they will have the opportunity to play alongside international stars. The Kings have Tamim Iqbal as their icon player, and bought West Indies’ Dwayne Bravo and Jerome Taylor, and Muttiah Muralitharan in the auction.”The great thing about this tournament is that the players can rub shoulders with Murali, Tamim and Dwayne Bravo,” Jones said. “[For the young players], getting to see how good they are against experienced players is really important. I think it will really bring the best out of some players. Some players will fail but some players will do very well.”The BPL has been hampered by some of the high-profile buys pulling out due to international or domestic commitments. The Kings will be without Shoaib Malik, the Pakistan allrounder, and West Indies opener Lendl Simmons. “Everyone has got that problem,” Jones said. “We’re looking for replacements now as we speak; who they are I’m not going to disclose.”We’ve got players coming in on the morning of February 10 [date of the opening fixture] because they are playing first-class matches in Pakistan and the West Indies or something. We’ve just got to roll with the punches, get them ready and off we go.”The Kings will be coached by former Bangladesh captain Khaled Mahmud and have Michael Bevan, the former Australia batsman, as their batting consultant, with Jones advising the coaching staff. “Khaled Mahmud is my eyes and ears; he is helping me communicate with the Bangladeshi boys and understand their roles as well,” Jones said. “Of course we have Michael Bevan and we have bowling and fielding coaches. I am very happy with my coaching staff.”Jones said the BPL would help Bangladesh cricket because it will give the local players the experience of playing under the spotlight. “I think it will give them more exposure, more awareness, it will put them under more pressure, under lights, in front of big crowds. Sometimes you’ll get hurt and get beaten. And then you’ve got to work on your strengths and weakness to come back.”I think it couldn’t come at a better time really for the Bangladesh people and the players. They needed this, I think they wanted this. They need to get out of their comfort zone and now they are going to find out how good they are.”

Players leaked information to media – Intikhab

Intikhab Alam , the manager of the Pakistan team, has said a small clique of players within the national side had contributed to a divisive culture that has dogged Pakistan cricket in the last few years

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Jul-2011Intikhab Alam, the manager of the Pakistan team, has said a small clique of players within the national side have interfered in the team’s management, leaked confidential information and contributed to the divisive culture and controversies that have dogged Pakistan cricket in the last few years.”There were times when, 15 minutes after a team meeting, television channels were running tickers about things that happened or were discussed in the meeting,” Intikhab told , a local television channel.”There are many things that are not for public and media consumption, and when they are leaked to the media it creates problems within the team,” he said. “There is a need for these players to sit down and discuss everything, including reservations with the management.”Pakistani cricket was rocked by the spot-fixing scandal last summer, but apart from that, there has been an increasing divide between the board and its players. In March 2010, the PCB banned and fined seven of its top players after the side’s disastrous, winless tour of Australia. Eventually the punishments were reduced or rescinded altogether.More recently, Shahid Afridi was hauled up by the Pakistan board for publicly revealing his disagreements with coach Waqar Younis after the tour of the West Indies. Afridi had announced his retirement from international cricket after being replaced by Misbah-ul-Haq as one-day captain, while simultaneously attacking unnamed members of the board. The PCB responded by suspending his central contract and withdrawing his no-objection certificate to play county cricket for Hampshire, as well as putting together a showcause notice detailing several breaches of the code of conduct.Afridi filed a petition with the Sindh High Court against the PCB, but the matter was resolved when Afridi and the board came to a compromise: his NOC was reinstated after he withdrew the petition. On July 2 legspinner Danish Kaneria filed a petition against the board in the Sindh High Court in the wake of his continued non-clearance by the board’s integrity committee.Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq admitted earlier this week that playing through the controversies had been akin to “mental torture” and Intikhab said the recent incidents had “damaged Pakistan cricket and are not good for our image”, but attempts were now being made to change the culture. “We are trying to set things right now and developing a more positive culture,” he said.”We have also tried reforming and reasoning with the players, and they are now responding well, which is good for Pakistan cricket.”Intikhab, who was critical of Afridi, in his West Indies tour report said his reports were based on “facts”. “Whatever I have written in my reports is fact and what I honestly believe is true, and it is my own personal assessment of the players.”If I try to hide these things I am not helping Pakistan cricket or these players. [The] truth must come out,” he said.

Australia escape spin challenge on 'rolled mud'

Australia escaped their most serious spin challenge in the tournament on a pitch Ricky Ponting described as “basically rolled mud”

Brydon Coverdale at the Premadasa Stadium05-Mar-2011Australia escaped their most serious spin challenge in the tournament so far, thanks to the wash-out in Colombo, where they shared the points with Sri Lanka on a pitch Ricky Ponting described as “basically rolled mud”. The ability of Australia’s batsmen to handle top spinners in helpful conditions is one of the questions that has surrounded Ponting’s side, which now has two wins and a no-result and sits third on the Group A table. However, the Australians have a game in hand compared to the second-placed Sri Lanka, and they have what should be easy matches against Canada and Kenya coming up. The match in Colombo was reasonably evenly-balanced when heavy rain came and set in for the rest of the evening, with Sri Lanka at 146 for 3, but the sharp turn being displayed by Jason Krejza was a worrying sign for the Australian batsmen. The hosts picked Muttiah Muralitharan, Ajantha Mendis and Rangana Herath, the first time all three had played together in an ODI, and Ponting knew the trio would be hard to counter. He said in the lead-up to the game that he had been surprised by the lack of spin in the earlier games in Sri Lanka, but a glance at the pitch on the eve of the match suggested it would be a different story this time.”That wicket is vastly different to the wickets that have been used in the previous games that have been played here in this World Cup so far,” Ponting said after the washout. “It seemed that they had a pretty good idea that it was going to be that slow and low and was going to spin a fair bit, hence the reason they played their spinners.”You could tell that it was going to be a lot different than the wicket that was played on the day before, because you could see that one right beside it. That one had a bit of grass on it, and the one we were going to use today was basically rolled mud. It spun quite a bit early in the game. What you associate with most one-day wickets is they generally don’t do much in the first innings of the game and they might just spin a bit towards the latter half of the second innings of the game. It appeared that this one was going to be a difficult one to chase runs on.”Kumar Sangakkara had set up an interesting contest with an unbeaten 73•Associated Press

But the Australians won’t know how their batsmen would have fared, as the dark clouds moved in during the second half of Sri Lanka’s innings. When the rain came, it bucketed down, and although it had stopped by an hour after the match was abandoned, there was plenty of surface water on the parts of the ground that had not been covered. It was a disappointing end to the most eagerly anticipated Group A match so far in the tournament. Shaun Tait bowled one of his best opening spells in recent times, finding significant outswing to add to his speed, while Krejza created opportunities with his turn and Kumar Sangakkara was looking determined to bat through the innings, having reached 73 not out.”I think it might have been a pretty good game of cricket,” Ponting said. “They had Sangakkara who played particularly well. At that stage of the game, 30 overs in and 140 on the board, we felt like we needed to make another breakthrough before the ball change, or around the ball change.”If we had done that around then and tried to expose their middle order, they had a longer tail today because they played all their spinners. I think we were only one breakthrough away, but saying that they had batted pretty well and it would have been a difficult run-chase considering the way the wicket was playing. I think it would have been a decent game of cricket. I’m disappointed for the crowd more than anything today.”The Australians will fly to Bangalore on Sunday and will have two days off before they start to prepare for their matches against Kenya and Canada. Sri Lanka head to Kandy to take on Zimbabwe on Thursday, before they leave home and tackle New Zealand in Mumbai.

O tabu corintiano e a zoeira palmeirense

O Palmeiras estava acostumado a ganhar.

Ela predomina no Dérbi.

Estive no time dos 100 gols em 96, tive passagem vencedora no Palmeiras, passagem especial, me valorizaram.

Newcastle ready to pounce on Philippe Coutinho

A major Newcastle United transfer claim has emerged on their interest in signing Philippe Coutinho this summer.

What’s the talk?

Transfer insider Dean Jones has revealed that the Magpies will make an offer to the Brazilian in the upcoming window if given the opportunity to do so.

He is currently on loan at Aston Villa from Barcelona and they will need to fight the Villans to land his signature ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “Steven Gerrard still wants Villa to sign Coutinho, but Newcastle are watching this with interest.

“At the end of the month Villa have to tell Barcelona whether they intend to take up the option to buy him – and if they hesitate I’m told Newcastle will look to make a proposal to the player.”

PIF’s best deal yet

Bringing Coutinho in on a permanent deal in the summer would be PIF’s best piece of business so far since taking over the club in 2021.

They brought in a host of players in the January window to bolster Eddie Howe’s squad, including Dan Burn, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes, Matt Targett and Kieran Trippier.

This deal, however, would be their biggest statement to date as they would be signing a top-class player in what should be the peak years of his career at the age of 29. He was previously valued at a whopping £135m by Transfermarkt and this shows how much potential he has.

The Brazilian would also come in with a wealth of Premier League experience. Coutinho has played 167 matches in the English top-flight throughout his career, scoring 45 goals and providing 40 assists as he has proven that he can regularly contribute in the final third.

In his last campaign for Liverpool, he averaged a phenomenal SofaScore rating of 8.01 across 14 matches in the division as he scored seven goals and provided six assists – creating 2.9 chances per game. If Newcastle can get him playing anywhere near this level then they will have an extremely special player on their hands.

He has proven his quality in England and still has plenty left to give at his age. This means that he would be a sublime signing for Eddie Howe’s team and one that would represent a major coup for PIF because of his pedigree.

It would send out a statement to other teams as it would show them that Newcastle mean business in the market and will be able to attract mercurial talents, like Coutinho.

Celtic dealt possible Carter-Vickers blow

Celtic all of a sudden have a fight on their hands to sign Cameron Carter-Vickers, with a fresh claim confirming that numerous Premier League clubs now want to sign him.

The Lowdown: Celtic in advanced talks

The 24-year-old has enjoyed a superb season for the Hoops, arriving on loan from Tottenham last summer and proving to be a vital member of the defence.

Carter-Vickers has now made 41 appearances in all competitions this season, including 29 in the Scottish Premiership, where he has averaged 4.2 aerial duel wins per game.

Celtic are keen on making the centre-back’s temporary move a permanent one this summer, with some reports even claiming the deal is ‘expected’ to go through after an American source revealed advanced talks, but a potential hurdle has now appeared.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates-4/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Latest: PL clubs could scupper move

Taking to Twitter, 90min journalist Matt O’Connor-Simpson claimed that a host of Premier League clubs are also interested in Carter-Vickers, which could be a problem for Ange Postecoglou:

“Cameron Carter-Vickers is attracting plenty of interest. Fulham & Southampton are the latest to join the race but the likes of Crystal Palace, West Ham & Wolves are looking too. Celtic obviously keen but pull of Premier League football is an issue.”

The Verdict: Major stumbling block

The lure of the Premier League is always great for players, considering it is widely thought of as the most entertaining and competitive league in the world.

The key to this whole situation is how happy Carter-Vickers is at Celtic and if he is willing to ignore interest from south of the border, where more money could potentially be on offer.

Hopefully, the American sees a positive future for himself at Parkhead and regaining the title this season could play a huge part in his decision, with Champions League football sealed in the process.

Ten Hag wants Tchouameni at United

Prospective Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag wants to make Monaco’s Aurelien Tchouameni one of his first signings at the club, according to ESPN journalists Rob Dawson and Julien Laurens.

The lowdown

The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealed on Tuesday evening that Ten Hag has verbally agreed to become the next permanent manager at Old Trafford.

And ESPN believe an official announcement could be made before the end of the month.

Tchouameni is a 22-year-old France international whose primary position is defensive midfield.

He’s under contract at the Stade Louis II until the end of the 2023/24 season.

The latest

Dawson and Laurens write that United have been ‘finalising shortlists’ in their target positions ahead of the summer transfer window.

Ten Hag ‘will be allowed’ to present his own list of options as he looks to put his stamp on the squad and Carrington sources have told the outlet that he’s ‘keen’ on bringing Tchouameni to Old Trafford.

Monaco are apparently willing to listen to offers in the region of £49.7million-£58million.

Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea are also interested, but Tchouameni would prefer to move away from Ligue 1, and the ‘uncertainty’ over the ownership at Stamford Bridge could harm the Blues’ cause.

The verdict

Signing Tchouameni would get the Ten Hag regime off to an excellent start.

He won the official Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year award in 2020/21, a clear indication of his immense promise.

And he’s continued to shine this season, winning four WhoScored Man of the Match awards, as many as PSG duo Lionel Messi and Neymar combined.

Tchouameni looks like an exceptionally well-rounded midfielder, ranking in the 74th percentile or better (relative to positional peers) for dribbles, progressive passes, tackles and interceptions (via FBRef).

He’s of a similar profile to the likes of Liverpool’s Thiago Alcantara and Real Madrid’s Casemiro.

Journalist Zach Lowy has declared him ‘one of the best young midfielders on the planet’, a glowing endorsement indeed.

In other news, Rangnick could be without an ‘extremely valuable’ player for a month.

West Brom: Robertson issues transfer plea

West Bromwich Albion legend Ally Robertson has called for the club to prioritise attacking reinforcements during the summer transfer window.

The lowdown: Blunt Baggies

Under the stewardship of Valerien Ismael and more recently Steve Bruce, the Baggies have struggled to score freely throughout the course of the 2021/22 campaign.

Currently sat in 12th in the Championship standings, eight points adrift of the play-off places, West Brom have scored 45 goals in 41 matches so far – less than every club above them in the table aside from Milwall.

Robertson believes that the departure of creative midfielder Matheus Pereira to Al Hilal has been the biggest factor in the decline of attacking flair at the Hawthorns…

The latest: Pereira 2.0 needed

Writing his column for the Express & Star, the 69-year-old suggested that the disastrous defeat to Stoke City revealed where Bruce must strengthen at the end of the season.

“They were compact and organised and difficult to break down. But we didn’t have anyone who could make something happen. We didn’t have anyone who could change the game.

“And the truth is we haven’t had that player ever since Matheus Pereira left. Adding more flair to the squad is absolutely imperative this summer. I think we need more creativity in central midfield and also in the forward positions. We need players who are better on the ball and who make better runs.”The verdict: Spot onThere is a genuine dearth of creativity in the West Brom ranks at present, with the likes of Grady Diangana, Adam Reach and Matt Phillips all struggling to fill the void left behind by Pereira. The Brazilian creator finished the 2020/21 Premier League season with 17 direct goal contributions from 33 outings, whilst summer signing Diangana currently has just two goals and one assist from 37 second-tier appearances.

With striking firepower such as Andy Carroll, Daryl Dike, Karlan Grant and Callum Robinson all in situ in the Midlands, getting the right players in behind could see the Baggies become a much improved attacking force next term.
