Unsung Heroes: Willian was a driving force in Chelsea’s FA Cup win over Leicester

Chelsea managed to grind out a hard-fought win over Premier League rivals Leicester in their most recent FA Cup match.

The two locked horns in the battle for progression into the semi-finals and it looked like they could be heading for extra-time. After a goalless first half, Frank Lampard made three changes following the break, bringing on Cesar Azpilicueta, Mateo Kovacic and Ross Barkley.

His decision to swap out Mason Mount for the former Everton midfielder proved to be an extremely smart one. Just after the hour mark, Barkley latched onto an inch-perfect cross and netted the only goal of the game and ultimately, Chelsea’s ticket into the next round.

However, the man who pinged in the cross for the goal also deserves praise for his performance, especially looking further into his stats against the Foxes. As well as providing the match-winning assist, Willian put in a solid shift as both an attacker and seemingly a defender as well.

According to Fotmob, the Brazilian created the most chances out of anyone else in the game (3) and also completed the most tackles (4). He earned a rating of 8.2, which is a Man of the Match performance.

Willian also won 7/9 duels attempted and 2/3 successful crosses, one of which of course was the assist for Barkley (via Sofascore).

He now has five goal contributions in his last five games, including the winning penalty he netted to grab all three points from Manchester City on Thursday.

Although Willian’s departure from Stamford Bridge is all but confirmed, the 31-year-old is still giving everything for his current club.

Phil Hay insight on long-term Bielsa future at Leeds

Leeds United sit under a cloud of uncertainty at the moment, and there’s nothing they can do apart from sitting back and waiting for it to all unfold. Meanwhile, The Athletic’s Phil Hay has issued his verdict on the future of Marcelo Bielsa amidst the current situation.

What’s he said?

With only nine games remaining, the Championship season has been put on hold with the Whites sat top of the tree, some seven points off of the dreaded playoff positions.

They’ll have themselves to blame if they cannot end that 16-year wait for top-flight football unless of course, the season becomes void.

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

As such, there are plenty of question marks over the Argentine’s tenure in west Yorkshire, even more so as he’s out of contract in a couple of months time.

Speaking on The Ornstein and Chapman podcast on Tuesday, Hay delivered his insight into how he sees things panning out, he said:

“Longer-term, you never can tell with him. I am absolutely convinced from speaking to people close to him that he will stay if Leeds are promoted I don’t think there’s any doubt about that.

“[I have] no expectation at all if Leeds face a third season in the Championship, but whether or not his view on that would change were Leeds to be denied promotion by a voided season, I don’t know and that’s a question that’d have to be asked.

“I think in the short-term and if the season is to be finished off, the expectation would be that he will definitely be here, and like anybody else, I can’t see him walking out with 37 games played and promotion right there for the taking.”

Phil Hay on the Ornstein and Chapman podcast.

Bielsa blow

The worst eventuality from a footballing perspective from this situation, especially at Elland Road, is the prospect of losing the very man that has guided them to an elusive feat – or possibly came closest to doing so.

Leeds fans have been waiting nearly two decades to see Premier League action in west Yorkshire after they suffered relegation in 2004.

A fifth-place playoff finish in 2006 was their best attempt at a return until last season when in reality they should have gone up having held the top spot for so long.

Supporters have even had to suffer three seasons in League One, so if this were to be snatched from their grasp and the subsequent outcome of that being Bielsa’s departure, it would be a devastating blow to take.

At least given the 64-year-old’s honourable qualities, he’ll be around until this campaign is complete, but to ensure his long-term future at the club, Leeds ideally need to be in the top-flight next term.

West Ham fans urge their club to appoint Pochettino amid Spurs sacking

Mauricio Pochettino was sacked by Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday, after taking over at the helm in 2014.

This followed on from a run of five consecutive Premier League games without a win, which had left Spurs 14th in the table.

However, West Ham United are having various problems of their own, with their run of winless games now extending to seven games in all competitions.

[ad_pod ]

There are now various fans who want to see a change being made at the club, with them hoping to see a move made for Mauricio Pochettino.

The Hammers have a history of making ambition transfer attempts, especially in the era of David Gold and Sullivan, so it is not impossible that the club could give it a go.

Though it would be a pretty incredible turn of events if the move was to be made, firstly due to the current stance of sticking by Manuel Pellegrini, as well as the fact that Pochettino has just left Spurs.

A selection of Twitter reaction to the idea of recruiting Pochettino, including posts from hopeful West Ham fans, can be seen below:

Michael Ball takes swipe at Liverpool after FA Cup draw

They say one brings two, and in the case of Merseyside derbies that proved to be the case earlier this week when, with one derby looming on the horizon, Everton drew Liverpool in the 3rd round of the FA Cup.Just when the Toffees faithful thought things couldn’t get any more bleak, they were handed a fixture that they are apparently incapable of winning.Their last victory on the red side of Stanley Park arrived in 1999, but Marco Silva’s men will have an opportunity to end that barren run this evening.Michael Ball, a man who played 122 games for Everton and is something of a favourite around Goodison Park, still managed to maintain a sense of humour despite the tough break.

Naturally, we can only assume by Ball’s emoji selection and hashtag that this is indeed a swipe at Everton’s city rivals.

A sly dig at the lack of local supporters in the home end is a staple of most footballing vocabularies if you’re not part of the established elite, and no opportunity to reach for that jibe has been wasted here.

Bravo, Mr Ball, well played.

The FA Cup traditionally offers away supporters the opportunity to take over the entire end of a stadium, with travelling contingents exceeding 5k representing the norm, so expect to see a blue swarm occupying the Anfield Road end in its entirety when the tie swings round in January.

For now, a smaller band of away fans will be desperately hoping their side can pull off an upset at Anfield tonight.

Leicester striker Jamie Vardy getting injured would be a worry, says Rob Tanner

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Rob Tanner of The Athletic spoke about the prospect of Leicester City having to play without Jamie Vardy following the 2-0 victory against Arsenal.

What did he say?

When Jamie Vardy stayed down holding his elbow, many involved with Leicester will have had their heart in their mouth, hoping he would be okay.

The former England international was eventually able to get up and continue the game, but those moments where he looked in trouble brought questions to the minds of some Foxes fans.

One supporter asked whether Leicester have enough firepower to cover Vardy in the eventuality he does pick up an injury, during a Q&A, to which Tanner replied:

“Vardy is so important to Leicester! I would be worried too. Iheanacho has scored two in the Carabao Cup but he is no Vardy at the moment. In fact, every team would want a Vardy.”

Key man

Vardy has been key for Leicester, getting 11 goals and 2 assists in 12 Premier League games this campaign, which is a highly impressive return.

He has been so impressive that Kelechi Iheanacho has been a spectator throughout the season, failing to play a single minute in the Premier League.

The 23-year-old has scored in both of his Carabao Cup appearances – against Luton Town and Burton Albion – but it is difficult to suggest that he would be able to step into Vardy’s shoes, even with James Maddison and Youri Tielemans behind them.

This point is accentuated by the fact he has scored just four Premier League goals since joining Leicester for the 2017/18 campaign – Vardy exceeded that total in his last three games.

Brendan Rodgers’ comment about Vardy, as quoted by The Mirror, also indicates how important he is for the team:

“He’s very concentrated in his game, very focused in the game. He’s a striker who is very rarely offside because of the timing of his runs. You have to be so clever and bright to do that. He’s playing so well, like all of them.”

It is undoubted that were anything to happen to Vardy, it would be a massive blow for Leicester.

Birmingham fans react to Jeremie Bela reports

It’s funny what one picture can do to a fan base.

But that’s precisely what happened last night as a photo of French forward Jeremie Bela started doing the rounds on social media.

There were reports in the summer linking the Blues to the 26-year-old but nothing came about as he was dealing with a contract dispute with Albacete who was his club at the time.

Although there are reports coming out now that this deal could actually have some legs to it as he seems to have settled that dispute.

This just added to Birmingham fans’ desire not to keep quiet about the whole ordeal, with many of them taking to Twitter purely to express what can only be described as confusion over the matter.

There were some who didn’t know who he was, whilst some were doing the mental gymnastics to try and work out how the deal came about and how long they’d have to wait for him to play for them.

While some took the more conventional approach of trying to work out if this was a good signing or not.

Shame this couldn’t have all been sorted out in the summer window like normal people, save everyone running around like this.

Southampton’s Kevin Danso can shine under Ralph Hasenhüttl

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Since arriving on the south coast, Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhüttl has earned a reputation for giving young, talented players a chance to prove themselves at first-team level, and another beneficiary of the Austrian’s footballing philosophy regarding youth could be defender Kevin Danso.

Danso, 21, arrived on loan at the club in the summer transfer window from Augsburg, and has started two league games for the Saints in the 2019/20 campaign.

Although Hasenhüttl did opt to give the Austria U21 international an opportunity in the first-team, Danso received a red card in his side’s defeat to Manchester United and has since been restricted to just 45 minutes of first-team action in the Premier League.

Despite the fact Danso was sent off against the Red Devils, the 2019/20 campaign presents the perfect opportunity for this highly promising defensive prospect to make his name on English soil, if he is afforded ample opportunity to prove himself.

A battling defender with the ability to contribute in the final-third – as his assist for Jannik Vestergaard’s equaliser against United illuminated – Danso’s profile as an attacking defender will have been attractive to Hasenhüttl in his bid to construct a balanced Saints side in his first full season in charge on the south coast, and despite his youthful age, Danso has had his fair share of experience.

With 10 appearances for Austria’s U21 side as well as over 40 appearances for Augsburg’s first-team, Danso possesses a respectable level of first-team experience that should assist in impressing during his loan spell on the south coast.

Southampton currently sit 17th in the Premier League, hovering above the relegation zone by a slim margin, and therefore it may be difficult for their Austrian coach to turn to youthful yet promising prospects as opposed to experienced top-flight players with history of battling in a Premier League relegation battle, such as Nathan Redmond, Oriol Romeu and Ryan Bertrand.

Although his arrival with the Saints may not have raised any eyebrows given the low-profile nature of the transfer, if Hasenhüttl can find the faith to give Danso an extended run in the first-team, this could be a player with the ability to handsomely reward his manager’s faith in the 2019/20 campaign.

Barcelona fans react to Lionel Messi’s latest setback

[ad_pod ]

Barcelona returned to winning ways on Tuesday night when they welcomed Villarreal at the Camp Nou.

The Catalan giants ran out 2-1 winners, with Antoine Griezmann and Arthur Melo on the scoresheet.

However, Barca were rocked by an injury to Lionel Messi, with the Argentina international replaced by Ousmane Dembele at half-time.

Ernesto Valverde confirmed afterwards that it was a precautionary measure but it’s safe to say that many Barca fans have already decided that this is a bad omen.

They’ve had mixed reactions but most of them seem to be panicking just a little bit, stating the club is doomed without the 32-year-old and even claiming that Messi’s career might be coming to an end.

There were also, of course, fans blaming Valverde for all of it as well.
