Leicester’s Evans swoop a bargain

Former Leicester City winger Keith Gillespie has suggested that Foxes’ defender Jonny Evans still has the quality to play for Manchester United.

The Northern-Irishman, who joined the East-Midlanders from West Bromwich Albion in a bargain deal in 2018, has played a key role in the team under compatriot Brendan Rodgers.

He has been a virtual ever present in the starting line-up as the Foxes continue to challenge for a UEFA Champions League place, highlighting how good of a signing he has been, especially considering that he was signed for a reported fee of just £3.5m.

This is all the more remarkable considering that just months earlier, Manchester City had a bid of approximately £18m turned down by the Baggies and at the time he was rated at £13.5m.

Since arriving at the King Power Stadium, the now 33-year-old has made 104 appearances for Leicester, appearing in every single Premier League match throughout the 2019/20 season.

His displays have certainly not gone unnoticed either, with Gillespie labelling him as a “Rolls Royce” and saying that he would still include him in the Manchester United defence when speaking exclusively to Football FanCast.

Evans’ impact on the pitch is certainly notable as well. In his time at Leicester, he has missed a total of 20 Premier League matches, whether that be through injury, suspension or simply being left out. The Foxes have only won eight of those, giving them a 40% win rate when the defender isn’t in the line-up.

Meanwhile, of the matches Evans has played, the Foxes have racked up a 48% win rate – a marked improvement when he takes to the pitch.

Now rated at £6.3m, the signing of the defender looks better and better each season, especially with Gillespie’s calls for him to be back in the Manchester United team.

Spurs dealt "significant" Ben Davies blow

We’re only a few days into the international break, and Tottenham Hotspur have already been dealt a bitter injury blow…

What’s the word?

Spurs left-back Ben Davies, valued at €20m (£18m), has been withdrawn from the Wales squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Belgium and the Czech Republic following a calf injury,

According to the ever-reliable Dan Kilpatrick at the Evening Standard, the 27-year-old is now set to miss the next two-to-three weeks, meaning he is unlikely to be available when the north Londoners return to Premier League action against Newcastle United on April 4th.

Wales caretaker Robert Page, usually an assistant to Ryan Giggs, described the injury as “significant” to reporters on Tuesday afternoon.

Mourinho’s reaction

Despite the arrival of Sergio Reguilon in the summer, Davies has still featured regularly for Jose Mourinho – his latest, a 33-minute cameo from the bench against Villa last weekend, in what was his 38th appearance of the season.

Indeed, the Welshman has played a little over 2.900 minutes in all competitions for Spurs this campaign, including a handful of Europa League matches as captain in the absence of both Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-spurs-news-mourinho-levy-gossip” title=”Read this week’s latest Spurs news, rumours and more!”]

So, to be without him on their return will be gutting for Mourinho, especially as his side got their quest for a top-six finish back on track with a win over their league rivals.

A result which somewhat eased the mounting pressure on the Spurs boss, following their defeat to arch-rivals Arsenal and their embarrassing exit from the Europa League last week.

In fact, the Portuguese has even already reacted to the news after the club’s official Instagram account posted an update on the situation. Mourinho wrote back: “When a player plays injured to help his team recover from two bad defeats, this can happen. a man, a team player” (as relayed by football.london).

Davies replaced Reguilon at Villa Park, with the Spaniard having to come off injured, just a few weeks after returning from the treatment table himself.

Reguilon had missed seven matches in all competitions during, arguably, Spurs’ worst run of form which saw them lose four of five league games, as per Transfermarkt.

So to potentially be without both would be devastating, and even if the former Madrid man is fit to feature, it’s still a risk for him to play too many games in quick succession given his recent problems.

AND in other news, Left for NOTHING, now contributing a goal every 65 minutes: Spurs will forever regret this exit…

Klopp confuses with Liverpool comments

Despite Liverpool suffering what was a sixth consecutive home defeat on Sunday, this time to Fulham, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has suggested that his team is still determined to fight amidst their worrying slump.

Speaking after the game, the German said that he does not see a problem with their desire on the pitch – a worrying affirmation from the former Dortmund man – and one that the statistics certainly disagree with.

When taking their current form at face value, the reigning Premier League champions seem simply incapable of arresting their current slide. The Reds have lost six out of their last seven games, their worst run of form since 2012.

They simply do not seem capable of a reaction.

Former Liverpool hero Graham Souness has blasted the players despite Klopp’s comments saying that the German has “found out” exactly what he has got within his dressing room.

Of course, the Reds do have to be praised. The Merseyside outfit had embarked on a stunning run in the league, beginning at the start of the 2018/19 season – claiming 196 points over two campaigns – an achievement that is only managed with a huge amount of determination and motivation.

Those features appear to have evaporated though. The microcosm of 90 minutes against Fulham will attest to that fact.

According to WhoScored, it was the visitors who were simply more motivated to keep the ball out of their own net.

They racked up more tackles, the same amount of blocks and won just one fewer aerial challenge, a remarkable number considering that the Reds attempted 23 fewer longer passes than Fulham throughout the game.

Whilst not the most extortionate disparity in defensive numbers, it is shocking considering Liverpool were only a few months ago were lauded for their committed resolve in defence.

The players’ strength on the ball has also abandoned them, too, possibly a sign of a lack of focus and determination. Liverpool were dispossessed on ten separate occasions yesterday, one of those giveaways being terminal as Mo Salah’s pocket was picked by Mario Lemina who then slammed the ball home.

It is baffling then that having watched his side’s under-par performance against Fulham, paired with Liverpool’s recent run of form, that Klopp can argue that his side is still as determined as they once were. He’s kidding himself if he can’t see a change in attitude from his players.

Why Bartley deserves new West Brom deal

After months of humiliation, failure and frustration, West Bromwich Albion are finally looking like a side capable of putting up a fight under Sam Allardyce – even if it may be a little too late.

In reality, the Baggies could have come away with a victory against Manchester United last weekend – creating two more big chances than the third-placed outfit – and against Burnley, they toppled the shooting charts despite playing with ten men for over an hour.

Mbaye Diagne has offered a direct threat in attack, the elite quality of Ainsley Maitland-Niles has made an instant impact, while in Okay Yokuslu, Albion finally have their defensive anchorman to shield the Premier League’s leakiest defence.

If only these signings were in place from the start of the campaign. If only.

West Brom cannot afford to let themselves ask that very same question this summer when several of their key stars are out of contract, including club captain Kyle Bartley.

The 29-year-old must be offered fresh terms sooner rather than later, irrespective of the division they’ll be competing in as he’s now become a crucial cog under Big Sam.

Sporting director Luke Dowling and the fellow Hawthorns hierarchy have already shown that they are thinking of the future by tying Conor Townsend down to a three-and-a-half-year extension, so they must do the same with the 6 foot 4 titan.

He, just like the former Hull City man, is going to be a player suited to the test regardless of whether it is Premier League or Championship football next season.

Bartley had been struggling for consistency early in the season but in more recent times, he’s shone at the back, notably against arch-rivals Wolves, where Allardyce labelled him “excellent” (even comparing the centre-back to himself) and versus the Red Devils, where he kept the illustrious Edinson Cavani silent for 90 minutes.

The long-serving defender, who earns only £17.5k-per-week in the Midlands, is also a massive threat from set-pieces, thus resulting in him being the Baggies’ joint-second top goalscorer on two for the season, alongside Callum Robinson and Conor Gallagher.

Bartley is a “natural-born leader” and a “real competitor,” according to former caretaker Jimmy Shan, who waxed lyrical to the Express & Star over him less than two years ago.

Which is what Albion need in abundance, particularly if they face the dreaded drop.

The former Leeds United man can continue to play a crucial part for the club, so with that in mind, Dowling and co must follow up their Townsend call by tying down the £1.7m-rated colossus to their defining future.

Exclusive: Howey on Celtic links

Former Premier League defender Steve Howey believes that Frank Lampard will not take the Celtic manager’s position if offered.

Howey not convinced

The 42-year-old was recently sacked by Chelsea in their typical and brutal fashion, with the former Paris Saint-Germain boss Thomas Tuchel taking over the reins.

Lampard has been heavily linked with a move to Parkhead, on the back of the intense scrutiny that Neil Lennon has received after a woeful 2020/21 campaign.

Before Saturday’s Scottish Premiership games, the Hoops were 18 points behind arch-rivals Rangers, who look likely to stop Celtic’s pursuit of 10-in-a-row.

Speaking exclusively to Football Transfer Tavern, Howey responded when asked if he could see Lampard making the jump north of the border.

“I don’t know. I mean, I think he’d probably want to try and keep himself in the Premier League. It was such a high profile job, Chelsea.

“You’ve heard that his name being bandied about for the Bournemouth job. For me, without being disrespectful to Bournemouth, that is a huge come down.

“Steven Gerrard has done brilliantly. I’ve always thought I wouldn’t mind Rangers actually doing something purely because it was just becoming so boring. It’s just Celtic, Celtic, Celtic. I’m so pleased now there’s that turn.

“It’s actually gone too far the other way if you want, it hasn’t even been a challenge this year. But I can’t see him (Lampard) going for that one. I think he’d try and keep himself at a Premier League team.”

Transfer Tavern Verdict

It is a huge challenge for whoever takes over from Lennon if the board decide to relieve him of his duties at the end of the current campaign.

Even if the Northern Irish tactician keeps his job, the supporters will be on his back almost immediately and will demand nothing else other than winning the title.

We agree with Howey here. The pressure may put Lampard off at this time and may require a manager with more experience.

Predicted Celtic XI vs Hearts – preview, team and injury news

Celtic have a golden opportunity to resurrect their turbulent season as they face Hearts this afternoon on the road. The Championship side will host the struggling Hoops in what could turn out to be another historic achievement for Neil Lennon and his men.

The two will lock horns in the Scottish Cup final and a win for Celtic will see them secure the ‘quadruple treble’. But they mustn’t underestimate Hearts. The Bhoys have had a wretched time trying to keep up with Rangers in the league this season, currently trailing by a hefty 13 points.

Lennon may have to make peace with the fact he will not finish top of the Premiership this term, but he can rectify his mistakes by guiding his team to some silverware this afternoon.

Football FanCast has predicted how he will set up to face Hearts later today…

After stepping up the plate in Celtic’s hour of need, Conor Hazard has more than earned the opportunity to start against Hearts today. Whilst Scott Bain and Vasilis Barkas have both disappointed this boss this season, the reserve ‘keeper has come to his team’s aid. Hazard should be one of the first names on the team-sheet.

Lennon’s usual back three should start in order to give the 22-year-old shot-stopper some confidence. Just in front of them, Scott Brown could return to the lineup in order to rally his troops and provide that sense of authority in the middle of the park.

But alongside him we could see Ismaila Soro return after impressing in his last two games. This means that the £20,000 per week Callum McGregor will take a rare seat on the bench. He has started every single game for the Bhoys this season, but Lennon could be looking to seriously shake things up.

Diego Laxalt missed out on a starting spot against Kilmarnock, but he should return today. On the opposite flank however, Ryan Christie may feature whilst the fruitful attacker in David Turnbull could start just ahead of him.

Football FanCast recently fought the corner of Leigh Griffiths, who could be looking at his final season of seeing much of the Celtic action. The least he deserves for all his hard work is to help the Hoops win a trophy, and for that reason, Lennon should start the Scot over Odsonne Edouard, who has hit a slump recently.
