Long must leave Southampton next summer

Southampton’s latest Premier League match saw them secure their second league victory of the season with a 1-0 win at Vicarage Road against Watford, putting them in 14th place in the table with 11 points from their opening ten league fixtures.

One player that has not played a big part in Southampton’s current campaign that we think the club should be looking to move on in the near future is 34-year-old striker Shane Long.

So far this season, Long has played just 65 minutes of action for the Saints across all competitions from two substitute appearances in the Carabao Cup and one substitute appearance in their 1-0 defeat against Wolves back in September.

This highlights just how much of an outcast he is in the squad at this moment in time and says to us that Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl doesn’t rate him or recognise him as a useful attacking option for his team.

Southampton signed Long, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £60k-per-week according to Spotrac, back in the 2014 summer transfer window from Hull City for a reported fee of around £12m.

Since then, the striker, who is currently valued at just £1.08m according to Transfermarkt, has made a total of 229 appearances for the south coast club across all competitions in which he has managed to score only 35 goals and provide 26 assists in the process. That’s a shoddy record and one that should be expendable to the south coast side.

Looking ahead to the future, with Long’s contract at St. Mary’s set to expire next summer, we feel that it would be best for all parties if the player left the club at that point, rather than in the upcoming January transfer window. That’s just in case there are any injury issues in the second half of the season where Long might need to remain as a squad option for Hasenhuttl.

If the Saints do let Long go in the summer, we feel that the club should then be looking to bring in another striker that could fill the space in the squad so they still have enough strength in depth in that area, especially with Armando Broja set to return to Chelsea after his loan deal this season.

Leeds: Junior Firpo and Jamie Shackleton doubts for Leicester

Leeds United could be without both Junior Firpo and Jamie Shackleton against Leicester City this afternoon.

The Lowdown: Leeds’ injury woes

The Whites have had plenty of injury issues to deal with this season and will definitely continue to be without Patrick Bamford, Luke Ayling and Robin Koch against The Foxes.

Bamford and Ayling have missed the last seven games with ankle and knee injuries respectively, whereas Koch has been absent with a pubis problem which has kept him out since the opening weekend.

Firpo returned from injury for the Under-23’s at the end of October and Shackleton hobbled off against Norwich last weekend, and it now seems as if the pair may also miss the Elland Road clash.

The Latest: Bielsa’s comments

In Bielsa’s pre-match press conference on Friday, reported by The Yorkshire Evening Post, cited by MOT Leeds News, he gave an update on the full-back duo.

The Argentine admitted he would have a ‘clearer vision’ on the weekend, however, with Bielsa so up front when it comes to injuries, it appears as if the pair may miss the match against Brendan Rodgers’ side.

The Verdict: Drameh’s full Premier League debut?

Cody Drameh has been thrown into the first-team fold as a result of Leeds’ defensive injuries, making his first start for the club in the Carabao Cup defeat to Arsenal.

He then replaced Shackleton against Norwich last weekend, so if Shackleton, described as ‘important’ by Bielsa, fails to make it, the 19-year-old could be in line for a full Premier League debut.

If Firpo, who was hailed as ‘incredibly fit’, misses out again, then Bielsa may have no choice but to stick with Stuart Dallas at left-back instead of using the Northern Irishman in midfield.

Celtic interested in swoop for Aaron Hickey

Celtic are interested in a deal to bring Aaron Hickey to Parkhead in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Sun, who claim that both Ange Postecoglou’s side and Aston Villa are keeping tabs on the Bologna left-back ahead of a potential move for the 19-year-old in the winter market.

The report goes on to state that a number of other English clubs are interested in the defender, however, sources close to the player believe that the Scotland U21 international is happy in Italy.

Speaking about the interest in Hickey, Bologna sporting director Walter Sabatini said: “Hickey is a Bologna player, and despite the interest of many clubs, he will 100% remain here.

“Last season was a short one for him because of injury but he has already shown us the great qualities he possesses as a player. Bologna are betting a lot on him, and he stays with us.”

Ange would love him

While the emergence of 19-year-old Adam Montgomery has eased Postecoglou’s concerns at left-back somewhat, with the injury to Greg Taylor initially looking to have left the Hoops somewhat short in the position, considering just how much potential Hickey appears to possess, it would be hard to argue that the teenager would not be a signing that the Greek-Australian manager would love to make.

Indeed, over his eight Serie A appearances so far this season, the £7.2m-rated man has helped his side keep one clean sheet and has scored two goals, as well as taking an average of 0.9 shots and making 0.5 key passes per game.

The £16k-per-week left-back has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of one interception, 1.1 tackles, 0.5 clearances and winning 5.3 duels per fixture.

These returns have seen the 19-year-old who former Hearts manager Daniel Stendel dubbed an “extraordinary talent” – as well as suggesting he could go on to become the next Philipp Lahm – earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.85, ranking him as Sinisa Mihajlovic’s joint 10th-best performer in the Italian top flight.

As such, should the opportunity arise, it would seem to be an extremely wise move for Postecoglou to do all he can to land the 19-year-old, as not even the sky looks to be the limit of the young defender’s potential.

Siddle cements place for Cardiff

Tim Nielsen, the Australian coach, has described fast bowler Peter Siddle as a “lock” to partner Mitchell Johnson in the first Ashes Test

Alex Brown at Hove27-Jun-2009Tim Nielsen, the Australia coach, has described fast bowler Peter Siddle as a “lock” to partner Mitchell Johnson in the first Ashes Test, beginning in Cardiff on July 8. Siddle was the pick of the Australian fast bowlers throughout the tour-opening practice match against Sussex, extracting life from the flat Hove pitch to finish with 3 for 68 from 30 overs.Though not a selector, Nielsen’s opinion carries much gravitas within Australian cricket and Siddle, barring injury, must now be considered a starter at Sophia Gardens. That will leave Stuart Clark, Brett Lee and Ben Hilfenhaus duelling for at least one, and possibly two, fast bowling slots for the first Test, making a virtual selection trial out of the practice match against England Lions in Worcester, beginning on Wednesday.”I think Peter Siddle’s a lock,” Nielsen said. “He’s bowling beautifully. All things being equal – his body being in good shape and him ready to go – he’s one of our two outstanding bowlers at the moment in my opinion. He’s doing a fine job every time he bowls and gets better.”That’s my opinion. I think he’s got better and better every game since he debuted in India He presents himself so well and he bowled really aggressively from the (uphill) end. He’s a young, hard, fit body who wants to bowl fast for Australia, and I’m really impressed with him.If, as appears increasingly likely, Australia opt for four pacemen in Cardiff, Lee (4 for 104) and Clark (3 for 100) have made the early running over Ben Hilfenhaus (3 for 101), who conceded runs at more than six-per-over in the second innings at Hove. Both senior pacemen will be relieved to have successfully completed their first extended hit-outs since undergoing surgery late last year, and will look to work on their rhythm in Worcester.”I suppose that’s the hard part when you come back from injury and you’re coming back into the squad and other players have been given an opportunity and taken it,” Nielsen said. “That’s great competition, and it means we have a squad that I think can go well in any conditions we’re confronted with.”

West Ham fans go wild for big news

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have gone wild over an announcement as the club appoint new head of recruitment Rob Newman.

The transfer chief, who was linked to a post at West Ham as early as mid-August, has now been officially unveiled as the Hammers’ chief of scouting and recruitment.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments/” title=”West Ham developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Irons boss David Moyes will now be assisted by Newman who operated in a similar role at Manchester City – playing a small hand in moves for the likes of Aymeric Laporte (The Athletic).

His vast experience of tackling the transfer market won’t be his only asset, either, with Moyes making it known he also wants to sign young players with the potential for great sell-on value.

Newman will come as a very useful appointment in this regard considering his role in signing the likes of Brahim Diaz, Angelino and Pablo Maffeo for City.

His arrival at Rush Green is certainly a big boost for West Ham and it’s little wonder supporters are going wild.

Everton: Calvert-Lewin to miss Villa clash

Everton have had an outstanding start to the season, and after their opening four games, Rafa Benitez’s side have amassed the same number of points as the league leaders.

The Spanish coach needed a quick start to life at Goodison Park after his controversial appointment but fortunately he’s managed to achieve results while his team plays eye-catching football.

Demarai Gray has hit the ground running and has now scored in three successive matches for the Toffees. They will need him to continue that record against Aston Villa on Saturday evening, though, because they will be without Dominic Calvert-Lewin again.

The striker had to withdraw from the latest England squad due to a broken toe but his injury problems have mounted, and according to Benitez, his situation is not improving.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the manager commented: “It’s what I said after the game. We have to wait some weeks, we don’t know exactly how many but he will not be available for two or three weeks.”

Calvert-Lewin currently has a quadriceps problem, but despite Everton winning and scoring three goals against Burnley last Monday, he will still be a huge loss on Saturday evening.

After all, he is the club’s star man and has become one of the most frightening strikers in the country.

The 24-year-old is a big figure at 6 foot 2 but he combines that frame with scintillating pace.

A nightmare for any defender in the division, he started the campaign by scoring three goals in three matches, continuing where he left off from last term – 2020/21 represented the best season of Calvert-Lewin’s career to date.

He beat the goalkeeper on 21 occasions in all competitions, becoming the first Everton player to register more than 20 goals in a season since Romelu Lukaku in 2016/17.

Furthermore, the Englishman joined an illustrious club of just Lukaku and Yakubu in scoring more than 15 goals for the Toffees in one campaign during the Premier League era.

On that evidence, not having him available at all times is a mighty blow to Benitez. The Spaniard will be gutted to be without the 24-year-old for a number of weeks.

Celtic: Source shares Kyle Hudlin update

Celtic will continue to run the rule over Solihull Moors striker Kyle Hudlin ahead of the January window, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Hudlin attracting interest

Hudlin holds the record for the tallest outfield player in England and has been catching the eye in 2021.

The 6 foot 9 forward was linked with Cardiff City, Manchester City and Middlesbrough by The Athletic back in August.

Celtic have since watched the 21-year-old in action in the fifth-tier during a 1-1 draw with Barnet last month, and it appears as if the Hoops will continue to monitor Hudlin going forward.

The Latest: Source shares update

Football Insider shared a story on Tuesday, with pundit Gabby Agbonlahor giving his thoughts to the links.

Within their report however, they revealed some new information, claiming that a Celtic source has updated them to reveal that scout Andy Thorne will continue to keep a close eye over Hudlin.

The Verdict: January move?

Hudlin is out of contract next summer, so Celtic could hold an advantage over Cardiff, Middlesbrough and Manchester City when it comes to any transfer in the January window.

Should his situation remain the same, he’ll be available to talk with sides outside of England ahead of a possible pre-contract agreement.

If he continues to impress Thorne, he could advise the Hoops to launch a cut-price move for Hudlin in the New Year to add a different dimension to Ange Postecoglou’s attacking options.

IPL auction only way for England players

How much do you reckon: Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff can be purchased by IPL franchises only through an auction © AFP

Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff, expected to be the prize catches for the next IPL season, will have to be purchased through a fresh auction in February, according to new recruitment rules unveiled today. Other than uncapped players and those who were signed up for one-year “replacement contracts” last year, who can be signed directly by the IPL franchises, all new players will be signed at the auction, officials confirmed. The availability of Pietersen and Flintoff, however, depends on whether the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) clears them to play for a significant part of the IPL season from April 10-May 24. The franchises will be crunching the numbers before the trading window opens on December 22 so that they don’t overshoot their personal spending budgets before February 6, the auction date, after IPL officials confirmed a fresh US$ 2 million salary cap on all new signings, either through the fresh auction or recruited directly. This cap is not applicable to the trading of existing players, a one-month exercise, though the rules specify that “each franchise is restricted to purchasing a maximum aggregate of a total of four overseas and Team India players during the trading window – subject always to the IPL squad composition rules”.The basic rules governing new signings have also been confirmed: a maximum of 10 international players in each squad but only upto four in the playing XI; all overseas players have to get No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) from their respective national boards; no short-term replacement contracts from the new season, except when a player is unavailable for the entire season; and, no carry-over from the $5 million salary cap from last season.Besides, there is also no limit to the signing of uncapped players, who have been classified as those who have not played Tests, ODIs or Twenty20 internationals and who have not been centrally-contracted to any national cricket board. And, franchises who had signed one-year contracts with players who were deployed as temporary replacements last season will have the first right to sign these players for long-term contracts this time. For instance, Mumbai Indians will get the first opportunity to sign up Dwayne Bravo, who they had signed late into the last season.Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, said the new rules will help “franchises redress the integral balance of their playing squads to make them more competitive”.However, the first step for the franchises in the new season is the trading window for players who are already contracted to the IPL, which starts Monday noon. By Sunday midnight, the franchisees will have to submit a list of players who they are willing to trade, along with signed consent forms from the players. A compiled list of such will then be distributed by the IPL to all the franchises, who will revert back to the IPL on the players they wish to buy. This information is passed on to the respective selling franchise after which the IPL steps back and lets the franchises do the dealing. There is no limit to the number of players who can be put up for trading, officials said, though players listed as ‘icons’ – Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh – will not be available. If a player is sold for a more than his original three-year contract fee of last year, the profit is shared between the selling franchise and the player, with the player entitled to a maximum of 50 % of the extra money. However, if a player is “offloaded” for less than the original amount, the selling franchise is bound to pay him the difference so that he retains his original salary. “The idea is to ensure that a players’ three-year contract fee, which was decided in the first season, remains sacrosanct,” a franchise official, who was briefed about meetings on Monday and Tuesday between franchises and IPL officials, told Cricinfo. The selling franchise has complete control of the entire process with the rules stating that “if more than one franchise is interested in buying the player, the selling franchise shall negotiate with all interested franchises. The selling franchise shall have the discretion as to which offer to accept.”Asked to elaborate on the IPL’s role in the trading process, the franchise official said it was a “satisfactory situation” from their point of view. “The IPL will act as the arbitrator to ensure that there is a certain order to the process, but at the same time not get involved in the actual trading,” the official said. “The idea is to ensure that there is no chaos, determine that only players listed for trading are actually traded. In the current situation, there is a balance between the amount of regulation and leeway for backroom talks between franchises.”

There could also be serious bids for players like Rohit Sharma from their home franchises © Getty Images

The scrapping of the $5 million salary cap of the previous year, another franchise official said, will enable a fresh start this season. Rajasthan Royals, the IPL winners, will be one of the teams affected by the ‘no carry-over’ rule, as they had nearly $2 million left over from last season. “There were complaints last time some teams were not aware of a second auction, and had spend most of their money in the first,” the official said. “A fresh start with a new $2 million cap will ensure a level playing field all over again.”Both the franchise officials agreed that though there is no cap on buying players through the trading process, they did not see “huge amounts being spent” during the next month. “The first year has been a lesson for many, and there will be a careful watch on the budgets this time. Rather than big names, the obvious targets will be performers from last time. There could also be serious bids for players like Rohit Sharma and Robin Uthappa from their home franchises if they are put up for trading, of course.” Mumbai’s Rohit was signed up by Hyderabad’s Deccan Chargers while Bangalore-based Uthappa was bought by Mumbai Indians.
