Injured Ashwin out for two matches

Offspinner R Ashwin will miss Chennai Super Kings’ next two matches due to a finger injury

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Apr-2015Offspinner R Ashwin will miss Chennai Super Kings’ next two matches due to a finger injury.Ashwin left the field during Super Kings’ home game against Kolkata Knight Riders in the 12th over of the chase, having hurt his bowling hand. Fielding at cover, he attempted a catch to dismiss Suryakumar Yadav, but the ball was hit too hard, causing his middle finger to bleed. He subsequently spent the rest of the match in the dugout.”Ashwin has a split in his middle finger. We do not know how many stitches he will require,” Super Kings’ team manager Russell Radhakrishnan said. “He has been taken to the hospital. The team has decided not to take Ashwin for the next two matches.” It means Super Kings will be without Ashwin for the clashes against Knight Riders on April 30 and Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 2.Before his injury, Ashwin had been key to Super Kings’ defence of 134, accounting for Robin Uthappa and Manish Pandey in successive overs. He had two more left when he was sidelined, but Super Kings managed to do without him to seal a two-run victory.

Maharashtra captain Rohit Motwani was fined 40 percent of his match fees while his team-mates were fined 20 percent for their poor over-rate all through the Ranji Trophy match against Punjab at the Maharashtra Cricket Association stadium.
Despite the adjustments for numerous stoppages in play, Maharashtra was found to be 11 overs short. It is, according to BCCI’s rulebook, a “serious offence” and match referee Sunil Chaturevdi handed out the penalties.

Gurkeerat Singh batted through a finger injury and his half-century capped Punjab’s outstanding comeback to beat Maharashtra by three wickets in Pune. His unbeaten 73 ensured the Punjab seamers’ success in the morning translated to a second victory in three matches.Set a target of 204 in 51 overs, Punjab got home with 25 balls to spare despite left-arm seamer Samad Fallah completing a 13th first-class five-for.Maharashtra had begun well with Fallah getting rid of Jiwanjot Singh and Amitoze Singh for single-figues, and having Uday Kaul caught at first slip. At 52 for three, Gurkeerat took guard with a heavily-strapped little finger on his left hand, which he had injured while attempting a catch off Rahul Tripathi in the morning. Gurkeerat had been rushed to a hospital and was relieved to see a ruptured tendon instead of a fractured finger.A Shirkant Mundhe indipper bowled Mandeep Singh and Punjab’s captain Harbhajan Singh stepped up at No. 4. Yuvraj Singh had not fielded during the Maharashtra second innings and could not come out until 120 minutes of the chase or the fall of the fifth wicket. Conditions were still good for batting despite the best efforts of Fallah, Mundhe and Anupam Sanklecha and Harbhajan took advantage with a quickfire half-century.Punjab needed 129 runs to win in 25 overs and Harbhajan went after Fallah, pulling him for a four and hitting him over long-off in the same over. He would strike two further sixes during a 54-ball knock. He targeted Sanklecha cutting and driving and striking him over long-off as well. The fifth-wicket partnership between Harbhajan and Gurkeerat fetched 83 runsMaharashtra attempted to gain control with Akshay Darekar’s left-arm spin and the move almost paid off as Harbhajan’s loft to long-off was put down by Kedar Jadhav. Harbhajan was on 41 then and Punjab 140 for 4. He would fall in the next over – the first of the 15 mandatory overs to be bowled in the last hour of play – he had hit a six off Darekar to get Punjab closer to the target.Yuvraj came in next and slammed Mundhe so hard the ball landed on the hovercraft beyond cover boundary, and drilled a Fallah yorker into the sightscreen. Next ball though, he flicked down Sanklecha’s throat at deep square leg. Two balls later, Fallah trapped Gitansh Khera lbw to leave Punjab at a precarious 182 for 7.Gurkeerat was saddled with the tail with 22 runs left for victory, but he calmly rotated strike before Siddharth Kaul finished the game with back-to-back fours off Sanklecha in the 11th mandatory over. The result was, however, set up by the Punjab seamers earlier in the day. Maharashtra began at 259 for 3 with Jadhav on 109, but Amitoze drew an outside edge of first ball Jadhav faced in the morning and was caught by the wicketkeeper Khera. Had Gurkeerat pouched the nick off Tripathi in the next over, Punjab would have ended up chasing a relatively smaller target. Tripathi, who was on 63 then, made Punjab pay by registering his maiden first-class hundred.Tripathi and Ankit Bawne, who resumed batting after retiring hurt on the third day, were milking the Punjab bowlers and Maharashtra were well on course to draw the game and earn a point. But Bawne was caught behind off a slash against Kaul soon after completing his half-century. Sandeep Sharma used the opening and struck twice in the penultimate over before lunch. He strangled Tripathi down the leg side and had the out-of-form Rohit Motwani out caught in the last ball before the break.

Carberry joins Perth Scorchers

Michael Carberry, the Hampshire and England batsman, has joined Perth Scorchers for the Big Bash League

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Nov-2014Michael Carberry, the Hampshire and England batsman, has joined Perth Scorchers for the Big Bash League.A year ago, Carberry was opening the batting for England in the Ashes series where he played all five Tests but has since drifted out of the reckoning. He appeared briefly during the 2014 English season, playing the T20 against Sri Lanka and one ODI against the same opposition, but was dropped after that series.Earlier this year, Carberry gave an outspoken interview to the where he was critical of the treatment he received from the England selectors following the Ashes when he was left out of the one-day series in Australia and not selected again while Ashley Giles was coach of the limited-overs set-up.Peter Moores, who replaced Giles as coach at the start of the English season, gave Carberry a reprieve although it was short-lived and it appears his international days are now over but he is looking forward to experiencing the BBL.”Justin Langer got in touch and said they’d love to have me on and I’m delighted and thrilled to get out there … it’s a fantastic opportunity,” he said. “I played there [Perth] last year, obviously, with the Test match and I thought it was very well supported by the English fans as well as the Aussies fans.”I’ve always enjoyed Perth; I’ve been there a few times as a young player as well on training camps or playing club cricket. To be back again and to play as a home will be fantastic.”Langer said: “We’ve stuck to the formula of looking for senior professionals available for the full BBL campaign and Michael fits that bill perfectly.”He’s a dynamic top-order batsman, a cricket tragic – which we like – and a great athlete, so he ticks a lot of boxes for us. I’m incredibly happy with our squad and it’s a great outcome for us that we’ve been able to replace Simon Katich in the top-order with someone of the calibre of Michael Carberry.”

Why Jadeja was allowed to appeal

Ravindra Jadeja’s appeal against his initial guilty Level 1 verdict wasn’t technically an appeal

Sidharth Monga03-Aug-2014

Ravindra Jadeja’s appeal was treated like a new case and was heard afresh by judicial commissioner Gordon Lewis•AFP

Ravindra Jadeja’s appeal against his initial guilty Level 1 verdict wasn’t technically an appeal. Judicial commissioner Gordon Lewis’ written verdict has explained that it was treated like a new case heard from the start. That should also explain why the appeal was allowed in the first case: this was being considered a Level 2 offence, not Level 1 as Jadeja was found guilty of. The ICC had earlier disallowed the appeal because even though this was Jadeja’s second Level 1 offence in a year, both had been under different sub-codes – 2.1.4 and 2.1.8. As it was with James Anderson’s not-guilty verdict, there wasn’t enough evidence to find Jadeja guilty of any offence, which raises questions about match referee David Boon’s original sentence.”As part of that decision, the match referee had reduced the level of the charge against Jadeja to Level 1 and pursuant to Article 8.1.1 an appeal against a Level 1 offence is not permitted,” Lewis’ verdict said. “However, because any appeal from a decision of a match referee is heard de novo [afresh] by a disciplinary commissioner, I ruled that any rulings by the match referee no longer had any effect and a commissioner commences the hearing of the appeal with a clean sheet, that is with the charge against Jadeja in its original form, i.e. alleging a Level 2 offence and was thus appealable.”Once the case began again, it stood no chance in Lewis’ court because of conflicting witnesses, heavily biased towards their own teams, and with no proper audio or video evidence to prove anyone’s guilt.”In short, I am not satisfied that the Level 2 charge against Jadeja has been made out to a standard of proof with which I am comfortably satisfied, and as I have previously announced, his appeal against the ruling of the match referee is upheld,” Lewis explained. “I am not prepared to exercise my discretion to substitute a lesser charge, as I could not be satisfied even at Level 1, that the necessary standard of proof has been met. In the circumstances this matter is also dismissed.”Given the lack of evidence, it shouldn’t come as surprise that India were aggrieved at the original verdict handed out by Boon.

Dhoni criticises 'irresponsible' seniors

MS Dhoni expressed disappointment at failing to make the IPL final after a brilliant platform set by Suresh Raina was wasted by the Chennai Super Kings middle order

ESPNcricinfo staff30-May-2014

‘I think in the middle overs there was some very irresponsible cricket by some of the most experienced international cricketers’ – MS Dhoni•BCCI

The second qualifier was the third occasion that Chennai Super Kings had conceded over 200 runs to Kings XI Punjab this season. They lost each time. A refreshingly familiar century from Virender Sehwag set up a target of 227, but it looked in considerable danger as Suresh Raina produced a breathtaking 25-ball 87.The highest successful chase in T20 history was in Super Kings’ grasp as they became the first side to post 100 runs in the Powerplay. MS Dhoni, their captain, had believed all the ingredients had been in place for their progress into the IPL final.”I think definitely it was something we could have achieved, the reason being Suresh [and] the way he batted,” Dhoni said, “I think in the middle overs there was some very irresponsible cricket by some of the most experienced international cricketers, so I think definitely we need to have a look, in a game like this when the stakes are high, you can’t really commit mistakes.”Raina’s blitz had allowed the other batsmen to play a normal T20 chase. The equation had mellowed down to 127 from 83 balls, with eight wickets in hand. Coupled with their batting riches, Super Kings are also a big-game team, having made five IPL finals. That they would stumble as badly as losing four wickets for 33 runs between the 12th and 17th overs contributed to Dhoni’s disappointment. He also had stern words for a weakness that has trailed Super Kings across seasons. While most times their slower bowlers would mend the perception of a weak bowling attack, this season they had received quite some tap and it continued on Friday night. Ravindra Jadeja’s 4-0-48-0 today was his worst T20 spell yet and R Ashwin was also slapped for 44 runs in his four overs.”Apart from that bowling department also, we need our spinners to improve a bit,” Dhoni said “Especially on good flat wickets that has been a concern for us, and again it proved in this game also.”They way they started, definitely because I had belief in my bowling that they will definitely let them score over 200 runs. But overall they batted really well.”The loss of Dwayne Bravo, who had injured his shoulder during the UAE leg of the tournament, had limited the options at Dhoni’s disposal in a crunch game.”One of our retained players, we lost him right at the start. And to come to the knockout stages without him, that itself is a big achievement. If Bravo was playing in a game like this, we’ll have one more spinner or a fast bowler and that really gives us good support. Six bowlers is something you can manoeuvre more with, but what’s done is done. Bravo got injured but still we did really well in this tournament.”Sehwag was the architect of Kings XI’s mammoth total. Booming front foot drives and pin-point cuts behind square were on full view and none of the Super Kings bowlers could curb his strokeplay.”I think Viru , once he gets going hardly any bowler can stop him, and in our bowling attack also there is hardly any quick bowler who can push him onto the back foot,” Dhoni said. “I think he batted really well, took the challenge to the spinners, dominated the spinners, never really let us get back into the game, they scored 25 runs more. The way Suresh batted, it was within our reach.”
