Former Premier League striker Dean Windass has exclusively told Football FanCast that the location could attract Eddie Howe to the Southampton job.

Howe has lived in Bournemouth, which is just more than 30 miles up the South Coast from Southampton, for most of his life having played for the Cherries for 11 years across two spells before taking the club from League Two to the Premier League during his 11 seasons as a manager.

But the 43-year-old has been out of a job since Bournemouth were relegated last season, with strong reports that he’s set to replace Neil Lennon at Celtic.

However, talks have stalled and Howe has since been touted as a potential successor for Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace and Steve Bruce at Newcastle.

But with Ralph Hasenhuttl under pressure following Southampton’s wretched Premier League record since the turn of the year – they lie 20th in the 2021 table behind already-relegated Sheffield United – Windass believes that Howe would be an ideal replacement at St Mary’s.

He told Football FanCast:

“That’s a good fit, I don’t think Eddie wants to leave Bournemouth, he’s been there his whole life. Without a shadow of a doubt that would be a good fit, the location for Eddie.”

Glasgow Rangers captain James Tavernier has refused to criticise the idea of the Gers joining a British Super League in the future.

Earlier this week, the European Super League fell apart within 48 hours of its creation (The Guardian). However, the prospect of the venture saw the re-emergence of suggestions of a British Super League involving Rangers and Celtic (The Sun via football365.com).

Speaking ahead of the 55-time champions’ clash with St Johnstone in the Scottish Cup, Tavernier said (via The Scotsman):

“As long as Rangers Football Club is always going to be competitive in trophies, that’s what we want to do.

“It’s one of those things where it’s a lot higher than the players. You saw that with the European Super League, it comes from a lot higher up in the clubs. If it happens, it happens. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t. I think it’s way above my pay grade!”

Difficult

Talks of the Old Firm duo joining the English footballing pyramid have been around for years – quite frankly, it seems to be a pipe dream. However, if it were to materialise, £7.2m-valued Tavernier (Transfermarkt) may well be disappointed, as winning trophies would become an awful lot harder.

With no disrespect to the Gers, they are currently playing in a league where they only have one real competitor for titles in Celtic. In a British Super League, the level of competition would increase significantly, and the Gers would no longer be able to overpower their opponents financially.

There are plenty of reasons why the Gers would be interested in such a project, but adding to their trophy cabinet would not be one of them.

وعبر بيان رسمي اتحاد الكرة بجزر القمر عبر موقع التواصل الاجتماعي “تويتر”، قال المدير العام للمنتخب العربي: “هناك 12 حالة إصابة بفيروس كورونا لدينا، من بينها المدرب أمير عبده”.

وتابع: “كذلك هناك إصابة للحارسين المُتاحين لدينا، مؤيد أوسيني وعلى أحمدا، مع إصابة بدنية للحارس الثالث سالم بن بوينا”.

Os dois já atuaram juntos em um clássico, contra o Santos – empate por 1 a 1, no Allianz -, mas o colombiano saiu machucado no primeiro tempo. Com eles na zaga, o Verdão jogou 318 minutos e levou apenas um gol (do Sport, na Ilha do Retiro). Uma parceria que tem dado certo também fora de campo.

– Vitor Hugo é um grande jogador, uma grande pessoa, e estou me entendendo com ele. Temos muitas coisas em comum e com os outros companheiros, Edu (Dracena), Thiago (Martins), Roger (Carvalho) nos falamos constantemente – explicou Mina, em entrevista ao LANCE!.

A dupla, de fato, tem suas semelhanças. Ambos são velozes, jogam bem pelo alto e, claro, são carismáticos. Enquanto o camisa 4 é conhecido por suas entrevistas irreverentes, Mina é também extrovertido, fã de música colombiana e agora de funk. Um complementa o outro.

– Ele (Mina) foi bem na Libertadores, fez gols, mostrou o potencial na ofensividade, e os adversários já estão ligados, estão começando a ficar preocupados com ele. Até com isso acaba me ajudando, porque tira um pouco o foco de mim, e os caras estavam me marcando muito. Acho que ele vai dar muita alegria para a torcida – analisou Vitor Hugo.

Com 12 gols, Vitor está prestes a entrar no top 10 de zagueiros-artilheiros do clube. Mina tem um longo caminho a percorrer ainda: fez um, contra o Santos. Dono da comemoração característica com o salto mortal, o brasileiro prefere nos próximos gols do parceiro aprender a dançar em vez de ensinar o pulo de costas.

– Nem tentei, um homem daquele tamanho. A física não permite (risos). Sou meio travado para dançar, mas vou dar meu jeito para tentar ir com o embalo dele para quando sair o gol – brincou Vitor.

Na estreia de Mina com a camisa do Palmeiras, a dupla talvez tenha feito a partida menos estável das quatro. Não à toa que foi nela que levou o único gol na história da parceria. Verdão venceu por 3 a 1, fora de casa

Santos
Logo na rodada seguinte viria o clássico e Cuca novamente apostou na dupla. Mina acabou marcando o gol que abriu o placar do duelo, mas saiu machucado no fim do primeiro tempo. Na etapa final o Peixe fez o gol de empate.

Fluminense
Sem dúvidas, foi a atuação mais equilibrada da parceria. Tanto Vitor Hugo quanto Mina fizeram o simples e se impuseram nas divididas para garantir o 2 a 0 do Palmeiras no placar, no Mané Garrincha, em Brasília. Foi o primeiro jogo do colombiano após a lesão.

Botafogo-PB
Embora o adversário dispute a Série C do Brasileirão, Mina e Vitor Hugo não tiveram vida fácil, mas conseguiram neutralizar as tentativas de ataque e o Verdão venceu, pelas oitavas da Copa do Brasil.

OPÇÕES PARA A ZAGA

Thiago Martins
Zagueiro que mais fez dupla com Vitor Hugo durante esta temporada. Além disso, foi aproveitado nas ausências de Edu Dracena por lesão. Aos 21 anos, teoricamente seria a última opção para a posição, mas ganhou seu espaço com boas atuações tanto na Copa Libertadores quanto no Campeonato Brasileiro e hoje é o reserva imediato. Fez 26 jogos em 2016, 22 como titular.

Edu Dracena
Foi contratado para dar experiência ao setor defensivo, mas sofreu com lesões e não conseguiu estabelecer uma sequência de jogos, quando pareceu que deslancharia, novamente foi interrompido por fatores físicos. Fez 18 partidas em 2016, 16 delas como titular.

Roger Carvalho
Foi perdendo espaço ao longo da temporada, ganhou chances com as lesões dos colegas de posição, mas não conseguiu se firmar. Teve mais aparições no Paulistão. Ainda não estreou no Brasileirão. Fez sete jogos em 2016, seis como titular.

Speaking recently to Football Insider, former Leeds United striker, Noel Whelan, criticised Marcelo Bielsa’s decision not to bring Pablo Hernandez on earlier in the club’s recent defeat, as well as urging the Argentine to alter his style of play.

In Leeds’ recent 1-0 loss to Aston Villa, Patrick Bamford touched the ball just 26 times over the course of the 90 minutes – the lowest number of any of United’s starting XI in the fixture, including goalkeeper Illan Meslier – with the centre-forward also failing to have an attempt on target, as well as receiving just 10 passes from his teammates.

And, speaking recently to Football Insider, Whelan claimed that Bamford’s struggles were down to a lack of creativity in the Leeds side, before calling for Bielsa to tweak his tactics going forward.

He said: “No one really got close to Patrick Bamford, no one really linked up as well as they should do with him. Only at the back end did Pablo Hernandez come on and we had a little bit of surge, but still we couldn’t find that little bit of quality in front of goal.

“I do think it could have been prevented if you just had the wingers a little bit closer, inside the full-backs, that changes the dimension. Then you’d be working the two centre-halves up against Bamford in a different way.

“We could still be playing now and I don’t think we would have scored a goal. When they play with a low block, that’s when you need that something different. You need to find that pick of the lock and only certain players can do that. I think Pablo should have come on a little bit earlier because he’s that player who’s always had that quality about him.”

Transfer Tavern Take

While Bamford’s struggles in the Villa game were clear for all to see, the fact that Leeds have scored 43 goals over their 26 Premier League fixtures so far this season – a figure more than six of the 10 teams above them in the league table – should not be ignored.

As such, while it could be argued that Bielsa perhaps could have made his substitutions earlier in the fixture against Villa, it would seem, in general, as if the 65-year-old’s set up of the newly-promoted side – who currently sit 11th in the Premier League standings, just nine points behind the Champions League places – has proven rather successful this season, despite Whelan’s concerns.

Many Liverpool fans were excited to discover that their team are looking at bringing West Ham United defender Issa Diop to Anfield this month.

According to The Athletic, the 24-year-old is attracting interest from Merseyside amid their catastrophic injury outbreak in defence, with all four of their main options unavailable.

Diop has found himself out of favour this season, making just three Premier League starts and accumulating only 297 minutes of game time (Whoscored).

Both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have been ruled out for the foreseeable future for the Reds, while Joel Matip and Fabinho both picked up injuries before or during their 3-1 win against Tottenham on Thursday.

This leaves Liverpool with no established centre-backs to choose from, with the transfer window due to close in a matter of days.

Despite Diop’s lack of action this term, some supporters reacted in delight after the report emerged on Friday evening, with many making their feelings clear via @TheAnfieldTalk on Twitter. One supporter said it would be an “unbelievable” signing.
