Manchester United: Fans erupt at Aurelien Tchouameni talks

Manchester United have opened talks with the representatives of AS Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.

And, as to be expected, a number of United supporters were quick to flock to the update on social media.

According to reports from France, relayed by The Sun, United have entered the race for the 22-year-old, who holds a valuation of £36m.

Primarily a defensive midfielder, he’s made 76 appearances for his current employers after joining from Bordeaux two years ago.

Tchouameni, who also has seven caps to his name for France, is wanted by some of the biggest clubs in the world, with Barcelona and Real Madrid name-checked with an interest.

However, it’s United who have reportedly spoken with the player’s entourage and are tracking Tchouameni ahead of a summer move.

United fans react

@utdreport relayed the update regarding United’s talks for Tchouameni on Twitter, with one fan believing the youngster could be ‘the key signing’.

Indeed, much has been made of the club’s need for a defensive midfield signing, and Tchouameni boasts a hugely impressive 2.9 tackles and 2.7 interceptions per game in Ligue 1 this season.

Franck Kessie: Spurs eye Dembele-like beast

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly leading the race to sign Franck Kessie…

What’s the word?

That’s according to Italian outlet Calciomercato, who claim the 25-year-old midfielder is yet to agree on a contract extension at Serie A giants AC Milan and with his current deal set to expire in the summer, he could depart the San Siro for nothing.

Spurs are among the Premier League teams chasing his signature and are the favourites to seal him, whilst Paris Saint-Germain are also interested.

Kessie is free to speak to teams outside of Italy from January, meaning the north London outfit could secure a pre-contract agreement with the 52-time Ivory Coast international, who is currently valued at €30m (£26m) by CIES Football Observatory.

Shades of Dembele

Whilst manager Antonio Conte may have to wait until next season to see the talents of Kessie in action, he would still be a mighty fine addition to his engine room.

The bustling midfield enforcer could well bring shades of Mousa Dembele back to N17. He’s capable of being an absolute rock defensively with his big physical attributes, whilst also being able to drive forward with the ball. He even has a goal or two in him, too.

Among Milan’s three best performers in the Serie A this season, Kessie has scored five goals in 13 starts, to add to his 13 goals last term.

Meanwhile, since the start of the 2020/21 campaign, he’s averaged at least 1.3 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, 0.9 dribbles and 0.8 key passes, via WhoScored, which shows his influence at both ends of the pitch.

Such consistent form has led to high praise indeed.

His former Rossoneri boss Vincenzo Montella once lauded him as an “extraordinary player” with “sublime intelligence”, whilst ex-Milan frontman Antonio Cassano likened him to Yaya Toure and dubbed him “devastating.”

“I want Kessie in my team, he scores, he assists, he has personality, he has quality, he doesn’t lose the ball, he’s intelligent. I’m watching him carefully, with Roma it was devastating,” he said. “It reminds me of the Yaya Toure of the best times. He is a different player, but in terms of impact. He is holding Milan’s midfield alone.”

You could argue that Spurs have lacked that sort of physical ball-carrying beast in the heart of their midfield for quite some time and it would appear that Kessie seems a perfect fit to solve that lingering problem.

Therefore, it would make sense for sporting director Fabio Paratici to push ahead to try and land the Ivorian machine over some of their biggest rivals.

It would be an absolute steal, not having to pay a transfer fee, and in Kessie, the Lilywhites could well discover their next Dembele – a mouth-watering prospect indeed.

Aston Villa: Galatasaray in Trezeguet talks

Aston Villa are in talks with Galatasaray over a potential exit for Trezeguet, according to Turkish outlet Fanatik (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

The Super Lig outfit will be familiar with Trezeguet, who played for Kasimpasa before he joined Villa in a £9million deal in 2019.

Villa have already allowed one wide player to leave the club this month, with Anwar El-Ghazi joining Everton on loan. That agreement additionally includes an option to buy at the end of the season.

Egyptian international Trezeguet is currently representing his country at the Africa Cup of Nations, and it’s unclear if that might delay any transfer.

The latest

The report states that there are ‘hot developments’ coming out of the Istanbul-based club.

They’ve begun negotiations with Villa as they look to land 27-year-old Trezeguet.

But there’s a need to ‘raise funds’ before any deal can be completed.

The verdict

It’s hard to say how much Gerrard values Trezeguet because he only returned from a long-term knee injury last month.

Since then, he’s played just 10 Premier League minutes, but Villa may be managing his return to action very carefully.

Gerrard’s 4-3-2-1 system, described as a ‘Christmas tree’ formation, may not be the best-suited to traditional wingers because it involves a relatively narrow front three.

So from that point of view it may be wise to cash in on Trezeguet, who retains his £9million value after 14 direct goal involvements in 64 appearances.

In other news, could this be a potential CB signing for Villa?

Celtic: Hoops keen on Callum Styles

Celtic appear to be plotting a move for Barnsley man Callum Styles, according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon, as relayed by The 72.

The Lowdown: Styles profiled

The 21-year-old is primarily a left midfielder who can also play as a central or attacking midfielder. The 5 foot 4 speedster is valued at £2.7m and is approaching 100 Barnsley appearances after joining from Bury back in 2018.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-19/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Englishman extended his Oakwell stay last year and was linked with a move to Leeds United earlier this year, and it seems as if the Hoops are now keen on his services.

The Latest: Nixon’s claim

According to Nixon in The Sun on Sunday (19.12.21, pg. 69), as relayed by The 72, the Hoops are checking on Styles ahead of the January window. This comes on the day of Celtic’s League Cup final triumph against Hibernian, with interim CEO Michael Nicholson seemingly busy on the transfer front.

A Celtic fan asked the reliable journalist on Twitter if the transfer was a ‘goer’, to which he responded: “Watching… closely… talented player…very attack minded”

Nixon described Styles as a player with ‘great feet’, adding that he would ‘very much’ suit Ange Postecoglou’s style of play.

The Verdict: With or without Hatate?

Celtic have reportedly reached an agreement with Kawasaki Frontale for Reo Hatate, who can also play on the left and in midfield, so the Hoops may well be checking in on Styles as a possible alternative, or even another January signing alongside the Japanese ace.

He appears to be a player with great potential following the links with a Premier League club in the summer, so if the Hoops can bring Styles to Glasgow in the New Year, he would provide Postecoglou with another option in multiple positions as the 56-year-old looks to continue his Parkhead rebuild.

Tottenham Hotspur: Former Spurs player backs Christensen link

Former Spurs number one Paul Robinson has backed Tottenham to sign Chelsea star Andreas Christensen, according to reports by Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Spurs interested in Christensen

According to The Daily Star, Spurs are competing for the signing of Chelsea defender Christensen. The 25-year-old could be available on a free transfer in 2022 as his contract is set to expire next summer.

The Denmark international has played 11 times in the Premier League this season under Thomas Tuchel, and he currently leads the Blues in one statistic, offsides won – averaging 0.8 per game.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Football Insider previously reported that Chelsea had made a breakthrough in contract negotiations with the player. However, an agreement is still yet to be finalised and with January fast approaching, Christensen will have just six months left on his deal.

The Daily Star reports that Tottenham would be interested in signing the 6 foot 2 defender, if a contract extension cannot be agreed upon.

The Latest: Robinson loves the move

As per Football Insider, ex-Spurs goalkeeper Robinson has heaped praise on Christensen following his former club’s interest in the player, further claiming that a deal would “have to be” on a free transfer as Chelsea and Spurs “do not do business.”

“Historically, they just do not do business so it would have to be on a free transfer in the summer.

“Christensen is a top, top player though. A top centre-half.

“When you look at his age and where he is at in his career. He probably needs a move and a fresh challenge.

“I’m not sure how it would work going from Chelsea to Tottenham. I’m sure he is a strong enough player and a strong enough character to get the fans on side very quickly though.”

The Verdict: Ideal but unlikely

It is reported that a £140,000-per-week deal was ‘practically agreed’ in August, which would have seen the defender almost double his current £80,000-per-week salary at Stamford Bridge.

Tottenham could be an interesting prospect for Christensen as Antonio Conte has experience managing the Dane, who he described in late 2017 as Chelsea’s ‘best surprise’, but if the Blues are happy to double his wages it appears unlikely he will jump ship.

Former Chelsea teammate Cesc Fabregas has also previously hailed the player’s talents, describing him as ‘very underrated’, so Tottenham would be foolish not to try their luck in convincing him to cross London, but this one feels rather ambitious.

Hopes out for Nagpur, doubts over Lee and Johnson

Australia have been hit with injury worries to their bowlers just one game into the seven-match series against India, with James Hopes ruled out of the second match and a question mark over the availability of strike bowlers Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson.Allrounder Hopes suffered a hamstring strain during the first match in Vadodara on Sunday. Mitchell Johnson left the field briefly with a left ankle problem while Lee complained of a sore elbow. Lee managed only six overs during the chase, left the field after his second spell and later returned.”Hopes, Lee and Johnson all underwent scans in Vadodara this morning,” team physiotherapist Kevin Sims said. “James has suffered a minor right hamstring strain. He will therefore be unavailable for the next game… however [he] is expected to be available for the latter games of this series.”Brett Lee has a mild right elbow strain and will continue to be treated and assessed prior to the next game.”Mitchell Johnson suffered an inversion strain of his left ankle. He will now receive treatment and, as with Brett, it will depend on how he responds to treatment over the next two days before a decision is made on his availability for the second game of the series.”Australia lost key players Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin and Nathan Bracken to injuries before the tour began. The captain Ricky Ponting didn’t hide his displeasure over the scheduling of the ODI series, which began just three days after the Champions League Twenty20, where the New South Wales players arrived in Vadodara to join the rest of their Australia team-mates less than 12 hours before the match. The second ODI is in Nagpur on Wednesday.
