Veterans make their marks in thrilling encounter as Derbyshire are outgunned by six runs
ECB Reporters Network04-Jun-2025A brilliant innings from Ravi Bopara took Northants Steelbacks to a third Vitality Blast victory by six runs despite a thrilling Derbyshire Falcons chase led by Samit Patel at the Central Co-op County Ground.Bopara scored an unbeaten 84 from 46 balls including five sixes as the Steelbacks recovered from 112 for 5 to post an imposing 194 for 6 with Afghanistan spinner Mohammad Ghazanfar taking 2 for 30.But Patel with 83 not out from 50 balls and Caleb Jewell, 71 from 44, gave the Falcons hope before they came up short at 188 for 4.Ghazanfar made an instant impact on his Derby debut, striking twice in the second over of the game.He beat Ricardo Vasconcelos’s big drive and then had Justin Broad lbw sweeping to reduce the Steelbacks to 15 for 2.It was 24 for 3 when Matt Breetzke pulled Zak Chappell’s first ball to deep midwicket and at the end of the powerplay the Steelbacks had work to do at 37 for 3.David Willey drove Chappell for six but the Falcons bowled with guile and discipline to restrict the visitors to 65 for 3 at the halfway point. The Falcons missed three chances to dismiss Willey and that looked like proving costly when 34 came off two overs from Ben Aitchison and Patel. So there was relief for the hosts when Willey pulled Martin Andersson’s first ball to deep midwicket to end a stand of 75 from 49 balls with Bopara. But that was short-lived as 56 came from the last three overs with Lewis McManus twice pulling Aitchison over the ropes before Bopara smashed Chappell for three sixesThe Falcons chase began badly with Aneurin Donald miscuing Willey to mid on and David Lloyd cutting the all-rounder to slip.Jewell drove Ben Sanderson for six but Wayne Madsen, on his 200th appearance at Derby, chipped the fast bowler to mid on to reduce the Falcons to 38 for 3 after six overs.Jewell and Patel steadied the innings but the Falcons went into the last 10 overs needing 129.Patel dispatched Lloyd Pope over long on for six and Jewell pulled George Scrimshaw over the ropes before another Patel six brought up the 100 in the 14th over. The pair took 15 from the next and the Falcons took flight when Jewell twice launched Scrimshaw for six with 18 coming from the 16th over.Jewell pulled Luke Procter to long on but Patel clubbed his third six to leave the Falcons needing 41 off the last three.Patel swatted Procter for six to bring that down to 15 off the last six balls but Sanderson bowled a superb last over to close the game out.

Robbie Joseph took his tally to 14 wickets in two home games for Leicestershire before rain brought a premature end to the first day’s play
09-May-2012 ScorecardRobbie Joseph took his tally to 14 wickets in two home games for Leicestershire before rain brought a premature end to the first day’s play in the Division Two match with Northamptonshire. After an uninterrupted morning session, rain swept in during the afternoon and the game was abandoned for the day shortly before 4.30pm, with the visitors on 99 for 3 having been put into bat.Fast bowler Joseph, signed from Kent over the winter, claimed two of the wickets as he continued to make an impression following his sensational debut for Leicestershire a month ago – when he took 12 wickets in the opening game of the season against Glamorgan.Since then Leicestershire have been on the road, playing three away games in the Championship, with Joseph managing only three wickets in that time. But the return to Grace Road seemed to bring the best out of him again and he walked off with figures of 2 for 36.Fit-again Leicestershire captain, Matthew Hoggard, decided to bowl first after winning the toss and bagged the first wicket in his second over, nipping a delivery back to trap Robert Newton leg before wicket with only one run on the board. But Stephen Peters and Kyle Coetzer dug in to launch a Northamptonshire recovery, punishing some short length bowling by the Leicestershire attack. The pair had three boundaries each when the 50 came up in the 17th over, and looked well set to share a big partnership, but Joseph returned for a second spell and snapped up a wicket with his first ball when he had Peters caught behind for 32 to end a stand of 73.David Sales soon followed, also edging behind, as Northamptonshire reached lunch on 95 for 3. Only another eight balls were possible in the afternoon before the rain arrived, with Coetzer still there on 43.

Ian Bell thinks the India series is his chance to start making amends for what has been a lacklustre one-day career so far

Now that they have achieved one of their stated goals – that of becoming the No. 1 team in Test cricket – England’s next challenge is to emulate that achievement in the one-day arena. But if one batsman epitomises the problem of translating such success across formats, it is Ian Bell, whose silken batting in Tests has been one of the major reasons for England’s recent rise, but whose role in the shortened versions of the game remains up in the air.Bell has played in just seven of England’s 38 Twenty20s (and did not feature in last week’s one-off at Old Trafford), while his one-day career includes two World Cup campaigns but just one century in 103 appearances. That solitary score came on India’s last tour of England in 2007 – at the Rose Bowl, no less – when he and Alastair Cook added 178 for the second wicket in a comprehensive victory. However, an overall average of 34.48, and a strike-rate of 72.69, provide damning evidence of his shortcomings to date. The current India series, in Bell’s opinion, is a chance to start making amends. Kevin Pietersen’s absence has created a vacancy at No. 4 which, he believes, will suit his accumulative style much better than was the case earlier in the season, when he was inked in at No. 6 against Sri Lanka, with a licence to play his shots, but made 81 runs from 117 balls all told.”I was desperate to give it a good go, but I didn’t feel I had done it as well as I possibly could have done,” he admitted. “The majority of the time I [was going] in with 15 overs to go and had to work on scoring boundaries from ball one. I’m not the kind of guy who is going to hit the ball into a few rows back, and I have to go over extra cover, or whatever, and use the skills that I have and find boundaries that way.”Part of the problem for England at present is that they have too many players who need to build up a head of steam – such as Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott, who are bankers in the top three – and too few who are capable of raising the run-rate from a standing start. In the right conditions Craig Kieswetter can do just that, although he has struggled with the moving ball, while Ben Stokes hasn’t yet had a chance to strut his stuff.Only Eoin Morgan has the proven versatility to cope with all situations than arise in 50-over cricket, but given the fluency of his Test run-making, Bell ought to be capable of making the necessary adjustments. “I try to learn off Morgs in how he plays the spinners and scores boundaries off the front and back foot,” he said. “I want to be a cricketer improving all the time in one-dayers and Test cricket so you have to learn and be open to new things. The game is going forward all the time and you have to stay with it.”His stated preference, however, is to be allowed the time to “go through the gears”, as he puts it. “I can still hit sixes. I can do it against spinners in Test matches so I can do it in a ODI, but if you are coming in late, you actually [have to be] able to clear your leg, which is not something I grew up doing,” he said. “I grew up trying to get a nice cover-drive and play Test cricket, whereas young lads now grow up looking at Twenty20 and hitting the ball, and that becomes a lot easier to them to do that, rather than someone who grew up looking to play Test cricket.”That is where the likes of Stokes, Alex Hales and Jos Buttler – all of whom have turned professional since the advent of Twenty20 cricket – have the change to steal a march on their elder colleagues. “You can see the skills they come in with now,” said Bell. “They have more skills than batters ten years ago would have. The little sweeps with fine-leg up, to clearing your leg is, I guess, just what modern cricketers grow up with. We are working on it and I’m desperate to improve in my one-day cricket because that’s what you are going to have to do – that’s the way it’s going.”That need to get down and dirty is something that Bell has been actively practising since the end of the Test campaign, but ultimately, he wants to be able to stick to what he knows best. As Mahela Jayawardene has demonstrated throughout a brilliant one-day career, there is a place for graceful shot-making in the shorter form of the game. All that matters is the speed at which the scoreboard ticks over, not the speed at which the ball sails to the boundary.”Speaking to Goochy, there are different ways to score runs,” he said. “You can pick the ball over midwicket or you can lift it over extra cover. There are a lot of shots. There is no point me trying to become something I’m not. I have to play to my strengths. I have to pick the gap like I do in Test cricket.”We’re all trying to score at a run a ball. Andy Flower pushes us hard to score at a run a ball. With the spinners on, we want to score off every ball bowled and push down the number of dot balls in the innings. That would be a perfect day, but you’re not going to have every day like that. A goal of ours in the middle overs is to score off as many balls as possible. If we can achieve that, we’ll score more runs and be a better one-day side.”Despite 10 series wins in their last 12 bilateral campaigns, England’s ODI team is still very much a work in progress. However, Bell is excited about their prospects in the coming months and years, and believes that Jade Dernbach’s emergence has added an extra dimension to their bowling.”We’re trying everything we can to improve,” he said. “Watching the Twenty20 the other day, it looks like we’ve got some players who can really bowl well at the back end, and when we go to India, the reverse-swinging ball and slower balls become so important. It looks like we’ve got an attack which can do that, which is a massive improvement already.”We’re targeting to become one of the better fielding teams in the world,” he added. “We’re desperate to do it. As with Tests, the group is hungry for improvement and success. If we keep that, I’m hoping it will be exactly the same as in Tests.”
The Melbourne Stars have poached three current and former state captains from around the country in a bid to be the tactical masters of the Big Bash League. The MCG-based Stars have signed Adam Voges, a regular stand-in skipper of Western Australia, Chris Simpson, the former Queensland captain, and the Tasmania leader, George Bailey. The trio will be joined by Victoria’s captain, Cameron White, and the man who has often deputised for him at state level, David Hussey. The Stars were the last of the eight city-based sides to confirm its first players, but coach Greg Shipperd said he was thrilled to have secured five such experienced and level-headed men.”We wanted players who understood the pressure of the game, understood the tactical side of the game,” Shipperd said. “We’d be disappointed across the course of the competition if we were tactically out-thought. It’s very important in starting off a new franchise that we get things right both on and off the field. With those five signings today we’ve started in the right direction.”Bailey would have been the logical choice as captain of the Hobart Hurricanes, but he has a Melbourne-based girlfriend and was keen to spend time in Victoria. Simpson, an offspinning allrounder, lost his Queensland contract this year after slipping out of the Sheffield Shield and Ryobi Cup sides, but remains a potential matchwinner in Twenty20.Attracting Voges, who has played 19 ODIs and Twenty20s for Australia, was a bonus, and he should be available for the full competition having dropped out of Cricket Australia’s 25-man contract list. Hussey considered a similar cross-country move to return to his home city of Perth, but decided to remain in Melbourne.”There was a little bit of a thought there,” Hussey said. “My wife and I are both from Perth, but playing at the MCG under Shippy and [assistant coach] Damien Wright is a pretty big motivation to stay here.”Meanwhile, the Adelaide Strikers have signed up another seven players, all men who are currently on the books with South Australia. Callum Ferguson, Aiden Blizzard, Kane Richardson, Tom Cooper, Aaron O’Brien, Michael Klinger and Nathan Lyon have joined the Strikers, who had already secured Cameron Borgas and Daniel Harris. However they were unable to secure the signature of the allrounder Dan Christian, who has decamped to the Brisbane Heat, a team that happens to be coached by Darren Lehmann, Christian’s coach at Deccan Chargers in the IPL.”You want quality people with great skills in your organisation and Dan certainly brings both,” the Heat’s general manager Andrew Blucher said. “He is a very clever bowler, a very powerful batsman and simply a great signing for our team.”The Strikers are believed to be trying to leave room in their salary cap to sign Kieron Pollard and Shahid Afridi, while the return of legspinner Adil Rashid to the Adelaide Oval is also a possibility. The Sydney Sixers have added Tasmania opener Ed Cowan, who is originally from Sydney, to their list, along with the fast bowler Mitchell Starc. Ricky Ponting signed with the Hobart Hurricanes, and is hoping to play two matches early in the campaign between Test matches.
Leeds United have been dealt a huge blow in their bid to secure Premier League survival.
What’s the latest?
In recent comments cited by Leeds Live, Frank Lampard revealed that he will be able to call upon each of Michael Keane and Donny van de Beek – both of whom missed the 3-2 defeat against Brentford last weekend due to injury – for Everton’s fixture against Crystal Palace on Thursday evening.
The 43-year-old also revealed that Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ben Godfrey will be available for selection at Goodison Park, however, the former Chelsea boss claimed that it is currently unclear as to whether Godfrey will be fit enough to feature from the off.

Concerning the current state of his squad, Lampard said: “Ben may be in the squad and that more a testament to him as he’s striving to get fit. He is in the squad but I will make a decision on whether he is involved at all. Michael Keane has recovered and Donny van de Beek will also be in the squad. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is fine too.”
Supporters will be gutted
With Leeds’ hopes of securing survival on the final day of the season – something which FiveThirtyEight predict there is currently a 40% chance of – being severely dented should Everton pick up all three points against Palace tomorrow evening, the news that Lampard looks set to have all of Keane, Van de Beek, Calvert-Lewin and Godfrey available is sure to have left the Elland Road faithful gutted.
Indeed, according to SofaScore data, Keane, Calvert-Lewin and Godfrey currently rank as the Toffees’ fifth, ninth and 14th-best performers in the top flight of English football, while Van de Beek proved during his time at Ajax – scoring 41 goals and registering 34 assists over 175 appearances in the Netherlands – that he is a talent who can always provide a moment of inspiration for his team.
As such, the news that the quartet all look as if they will play some sort of role on Thursday night is undoubtedly awful news for the Whites’ survival hopes this season – as an Everton win, coupled with a Burnley victory over Aston Villa tomorrow evening, would all but represent the final nail in the coffin for Jesse Marsch and his side this term.

Morgan Gibbs-White has shown enough quality for Sheffield United to suggest he will be starting for Wolves next season, according to Midlands journalist Josh Holland.
The Lowdown: Gibbs-White superb on loan
The 22-year-old joined the Blades on loan last summer, with Bruno Lage unable to offer him guarantees regarding regular playing time for Wanderers.
Gibbs-White has enjoyed a fantastic season for United, scoring ten goals and registering seven assists in the Championship, proving to be a key player in their promotion charge.
The midfielder is expected to return to Wolves at the end of the season, at which point he will hope to kick on under Lage.

The Latest: Journalist backs starting role
Speaking to Give Me Sport, Holland claimed that Gibbs-White will be a key starter for Wanderers from next season onwards:
“I think if you look at Morgan Gibbs-White from last April to this April, when he comes back to Wolves in the summer, I think he’ll be starting for Wolves next season.
“I think there has been times when Morgan Gibbs-White would have been perfect for Wolves this season.”

The Verdict: Hugely exciting prospect
Gibbs-White is a player who has immense potential – he has been hailed as ‘outstanding’ by Barnsley head coach Poya Asbaghi – and it is time for him to be trusted in a Wolves shirt.
He has shown that he can excel in a difficult league in 2021/22, and with midfield pair Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho both possibly leaving the club, vacancies should appear in the middle of the park.
Showing faith in homegrown young players is so important, particularly when they possess Gibbs-White’s natural ability, so it would be heartwarming to see him trusted from next season onwards.
In other news, Wolves are reportedly keen on signing a Premier League attacker. Find out who it is here.
Alex McLeish has given his reaction to some Glasgow Rangers injury news that he has now heard involving Alfredo Morelos.
The Lowdown: Thigh surgery for Morelos
The Ibrox club confirmed earlier this week that the 25-year-old has undergone surgery on a thigh injury and will now return to training in pre-season, which means he has been ruled out for the rest of the current campaign.
It has been reported that they could now sell the Colombia international in the summer, meaning that he may have played his last game for the Teddy Bears.
The Latest: McLeish reacts to Morelos blow
Speaking to Football Insider, former Light Blues manager McLeish has now given his reaction to the news of Morelos’ injury, as well as the striker’s potential departure this summer. He said:
“Listen, you couldn’t rule it out. It’s a massive blow because who else do you turn to now in terms of getting goals?
“I like Roofe but I think he has to play with somebody up front. I don’t think he’s a lone striker. I do feel he needs a foil to play with. Who that foil is going to be, I don’t really know.”
The Verdict: Others must step up
Morelos is Rangers’ top scorer this season on 19 goals, and in his absence, others must now step up to the plate ahead of Sunday’s clash against St Mirren.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team managed no shots on target in their 1-0 loss away to Braga in the Europa League on Thursday night, which is simply not good enough.
If they are to have any chance of going through to the semi-finals, then their frontmen must be more prolific. After all, they could be playing for a starting spot next season if Morelos ends up leaving Ibrox.
In other news, these were the Gers’ three worst performers against Braga
