Non-striker run outs and catches close to the ground shouldn't be as complicated as they are

Running out a batter who is leaving his crease early is fair, period. And so-called bump catches ought to be ruled on by the on-field umpires

Ian Chappell15-Jan-2023Two major sources of cricket controversies – run outs at the bowler’s end and catches referred to the third umpire – have reared their ugly heads again.Run outs at the bowler’s end can and should be resolved easily. The original law was more than adequate and should never have been changed. It’s a reminder that there are generally two solutions to a problem – a simple one and a complicated one. Cricket is renowned for choosing the latter.Attempting a run out at the bowler’s end without warning a batter is not unsporting. Appealing for a catch that a fielder knows he has caught should not be subjected to crowd booing as it’s legal.Related

In the Guwahati game against Sri Lanka, I’d have preferred if the India captain, Rohit Sharma, had enforced, rather than rescinded, the run-out appeal against his opposite number Dasun Shanaka. As I said to R Ashwin during India’s 2020-21 tour: “Keep mankading batsmen until they finally work out that what they are doing is illegal.”Ashwin ran-out Jos Buttler at the bowler’s end in a 2019 IPL game. His actions – which should have been applauded – were widely decried and even described as “contrary to the spirit of the game” by the MCC.How could it be against the spirit of the game when it’s legal according to cricket’s laws? Why is the bowler regularly admonished by the public and often booed for cheating when it is the batter who is trying to gain an advantage? If a batter backs up as he should – watching the bowler’s hand with his bat in the crease and only leaving when the ball is actually delivered – he won’t be run out. In the process he may also gain some information that will help when he is at the striker’s end later, facing that same bowler.Bowlers should be able to bring their arm over without releasing the ball and then break the stumps to effect a run out. This was correctly allowed under the old law. If batters were run out under that law, they would quickly learn to back up legally.

An honest fielder knows when he has caught the ball. There are certain indicators an umpire needs to consider before he makes his decision – a ball that bounces goes straight into the palm rather than lodging in the fingers first

In a game more than a decade ago, England appealed for a catch against a Sri Lanka batter at one point. A number of English commentators bemoaned the not-out decision made by the Sri Lankan video umpire, and the next morning Tony Greig re-enacted a fair catch from the same on-field position. The various cameras collected shots of Greig’s re-enactment and despite him depicting a fair catch, from some angles it appeared as a bump ball. As this case showed, a picture doesn’t always tell the truth.Greig’s well-thought-out move should have put a definite end to catch replays being sent to the third umpire. At the same time, administrators ought to have let it be known and widely circulated among the media that on-field umpires would in future adjudicate on catches. However, this move was never made and catches close to the ground are still referred to the third umpire. Surprise, surprise, there were three such referrals in the SCG Test between Australia and South Africa and all of them created controversy. An honest fielder knows when he has caught the ball. There are certain indicators an umpire needs to consider before he makes his decision – a ball that bounces goes straight into the palm rather than lodging in the fingers first, for instance. An umpire should also be aware of a fielder’s trustworthiness and this should be considered when making a decision. Each administration needs to ensure team captains are aware of their responsibility to make sure the fielding side behaves with integrity.Umpires should be making the on-field decisions about catches and not referring them to – in this case – an unreliable video system. Umpires already give a soft signal, so why shouldn’t they actually make the decision? There is already enough controversy surrounding the game of cricket without the administrators unnecessarily contributing to the drama.

Popular Podcaster Booed Heavily for Unusual 7th-Inning Stretch at Cubs Game

The Chicago Cubs crushed the St. Louis Cardinals on , jumping out to an 11-0 lead against their hated rival en route to their 54th victory of the year. This came a few hours after Matthew Boyd, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Tucker were confirmed as National League All-Stars. On paper it seems like it would be impossible for Cubs fans enjoying the moment at Wrigley Field to be annoyed by anything. But if you go to enough baseball games you're bound to see something you've never seen before and that includes 's Alex Cooper singing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" during the seventh-inning stretch.

The immensely popular podcast host sprang forth with a bold new take on a classic song. And it was not immediately beloved.

Now, just to be clear. There have been way worse attempts at the seventh-inning tradition over the years. How anyone can be brave enough to get on the microphone and fight against completely losing their breath midway though is beyond me, so respect to all those who try. But rarely, if ever, does the Wrigley Field faithful turn on the singer like this. It takes a lot for them to break the unwritten rule of always supporting the singer.

Not very nice.

Red Sox Promising Rookie to Have Season-Ending Wrist Surgery

The Boston Red Sox received some unfortunate news on Sunday morning as they continue their push for an AL wild card spot.

According to manager Alex Cora, rookie infielder Marcelo Mayer will undergo surgery on his injured right wrist. He'll miss the remainder of the 2025 season and is expected to be ready for spring training.

Mayer was placed on the injured list at the end of July after spraining his wrist, but there was optimism that he could return this season. He received an anti-inflammatory shot at the beginning of August to "get him back," but it unfortunately didn't go as planned. He'll now go under the knife. The recovery timetable is expected to be three months.

The Red Sox selected Mayer with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2021 MLB draft. He was promoted to the big leagues at the end of May and through 44 games, slashed .228/.272/.402 with four home runs and 10 RBIs.

'Frustrated' Ruben Amorim admits Man Utd are still 'far from perfection' & issues clear warning to players

Ruben Amorim has moved to temper the growing optimism around Manchester United as he insisted that the club’s recent upturn in form is no cause for complacency. The Portuguese coach stressed that his team remain "far from perfection", even though they are currently on a five-match unbeaten run and showed signs of improvement before the latest international break.

A measured rebound, not a revival

United headed into the international break riding a five-match unbeaten run in the Premier League, a sequence that featured a statement victory over Liverpool at Anfield. However, two back-to-back draws against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur have provided a reality check that there is still enough room for improvement and consistency. Reflecting on the team’s progress, Amorim explained that confidence, born from hard-earned results, has been central to recent performances. Yet his frustration simmered beneath the surface when revisiting their most recent league outing against Spurs.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportAmorim is cautiously optimistic

In an interview with Amorim said, "We are playing better, but we are playing better because we have more confidence, and that starts with good results, for example, against Liverpool. We are getting better, but I can share my feeling: when we finished the game against Tottenham and I was coming back to Carrington, I was watching the game and my feeling was frustration, that we are far from perfection. We are far from being the team that can win every game. So I think we have a lot to do."

The United boss, who is now more than a year into one of the most scrutinised managerial spells in Europe, again pushed back against familiar criticism of his 3-4-3 structure. The formation, he argued, is a convenient scapegoat, one that distracts from the real shortcomings.

"I've been saying this for many months, that the formation is not the problem," he claimed. "The formation is the start of something, then it's the dynamic, the confidence, the way we play, how competitive we are. If you look at the games we struggled in this season, it was not about the formation for me. It was the lack of intensity. We need to be perfect in this league to win a lot of games."

Ratcliffe’s support helps, but doesn’t change him

United slumped to a dismal 15th-place finish in the previous Premier League campaign and were branded directionless. Early in this campaign, the pressure returned after an embarrassing League Cup exit to League Two Grimsby Town. It was an upset that revived doubts about his suitability for the job. Yet Amorim has held onto the backing of senior club figures, most notably part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. While the coach acknowledged that Ratcliffe’s public vote of confidence was vital for the club’s wider stability, he insisted that such endorsements have little bearing on his own approach.

"It's always really important, but it's more important for the fans to understand that we have a clear path, and we are going to do everything and continue that path no matter what," he said. "To be honest, it doesn't change much for me, because I'm not worried about losing my job. I always have that feeling. But if you remember when Jim gave that interview, it settled down a lot around the club. The noise changed completely. That was really important for the team, and if it's important for the team, it's important for me."

Getty ImagesA legends’ reunion: Cantona, Beckham, Scholes and Co.

As United attempt to build momentum, Amorim is preparing an unconventional move to deepen the club’s cultural grounding. According to sources close to the manager, he intends to bring club icons like Eric Cantona, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Teddy Sheringham, Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke into the fold to offer guidance to younger members of the squad.

The source, speaking to , said: "Throughout his own career, Ruben always loved when former players and legends of the clubs he played for would interact with the team, sharing knowledge, stories, and advice about what it means to represent the club. Coming from Benfica, he understands what real pressure feels like and how to use it to grow, as a man, a player, and now as a leader. He believes these exchanges can help the players make the most of their time at United, both on and off the pitch."

United currently sit seventh in the Premier League table, only two points adrift of the Champions League qualification spots. After a season without European football, the push to return to continental competition remains a priority. Their campaign resumes next Monday night at Old Trafford, where they host Everton.

Settled SL meet a Bangladesh in transition for ODI series opener

Mehidy Hasan Miraz will be full-time Bangladesh captain in ODIs for the first time

Madushka Balasuriya01-Jul-2025Big picture: A new era for BangladeshAfter a hard-fought Test series, the action now switches to the white-ball format, with the first of three ODIs starting on Wednesday. For Bangladesh it’s the dawn of a new era in many ways. They have a new ODI captain for starters, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz taking over from Najmul Hossain Shanto, but more pressingly are the recent retirements of stalwarts Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah. To say it signals a changing of the guard would be an almost textbook definition of the idiom, in fact, as Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah were the last remaining vestiges of Bangladesh’s fab five, which also included Mashrafe Mortaza, Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan. You would have to go all the way back to September 2005 to find the last ODI that neither of these players took part in – coincidentally, also against Sri Lanka in Colombo.Related

Madushanka back in SL squad for Bangladesh ODIs

Freed from the burden of captaincy, Shanto could relaunch his career

Rebuild, resurrect, recalibrate – Mehidy has an unenviable task as ODI captain

So what does this new look Bangladesh entail? Well, they’ll be hoping recent form isn’t an accurate indicator. They’ve lost their last six completed ODIs, and 8 of their last 11 ODIs since the start of 2024. Though more promisingly, two of those wins were part of a series victory against Sri Lanka.Since that series defeat though, Sri Lanka have been on a bit of a tear, particularly at home. They’ve beaten India, West Indies, New Zealand and Australia on home turf in the past year, with their only ODI series loss coming away to New Zealand. And while Bangladesh are seeking to fill some big holes, Sri Lanka very well might be settling into a favoured setup. Their batting is now replete with ever more dependable performers, while their bench strength is becoming quite formidable.Nowhere is this more exemplified than in the pace contingent with Eshan Malinga, Asitha Fernando and Dilshan Madushanka included ahead of the likes of Dushmantha Chameera, Lahiru Kumara, Nuwan Thushara and Matheesha Pathirana. Meanwhile a spin department headed by Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana is comfortably in world-class territory, and even deadlier in home conditions. But Bangladesh have exciting talents of their own, even if overall depth is still lacking. Rishad Hossain was a key part of Bangladesh’s most recent win against Sri Lanka, while in Mehidy they have one of the premier allrounders in world cricket. Shanto, meanwhile, unburdened by captaincy will be eyeing to turn over a new leaf of his own.So it very well could be a fresh start for this young Bangladesh outfit, and where better to start than by targeting a first-ever series win in Sri Lanka.Recent formSri Lanka WWWLL (most recent first)
Bangladesh LLLLLIn the spotlight: Theekshana & RishadMaheesh Theekshana played just one out of a possible three ODIs against India last year, and then two out of three against West Indies. But since then he’s played in every home ODI he’s been available for, while even picking up seven wickets across two games in New Zealand. While Theekshana has for the most part been considered a T20 specialist, it seems the think tank is increasingly more attuned to the utility of his skillset in ODIs as well. And even when he’s not picking up wickets, he’s creating the pressure for the bevy of spinners around him to profit.Unlike Sri Lanka’s, Bangladesh’s spinners haven’t had all that great a time as of late, but in Rishad Hossain they have the kind of talent every team in world cricket is looking for – namely, a leg spinning all-rounder that can hit the ball far. But sadly for Bangladesh and Rishad, neither facet of his skillset has been coming off as of late. His last 10 games, internationally and in franchise cricket, has seen a high score of 13 and 11 wickets. But when Bangladesh last played Sri Lanka in the format, Rishad struck a devastating 48 off 18, with a wicket to go with it. If Bangladesh are to challenge a strong Sri Lankan outfit, Hossain will have to be on top of his game.Team news: Major changes expected for visitorsSri Lanka’s XI is largely settled but there are a few areas wherein things might not be as nailed down. An opening partner for Pathum Nissanka is one of them, with Nishan Madushka preferred over Avishka Fernando in Sri Lanka’s last ODI. Eshan had a storming IPL and domestic season, which means it’ll likely be between Asitha and Madushanka for that final seamer spot.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Nishan Madushka/Avishka Fernando, 2 Pathum Nissanka, 3 Kusal Mendis, 4 Charith Asalanka, 5 Kamindu Mendis 6 Janith Liyanage, 7 Dunith Wellalage, 8 Wanindu Hasaranga, 9 Maheesh Theekshana 10 Eshan Malinga 11 Asitha Fernando/Dilshan MadushankaThe visitors have to make at least two major changes to their middle-order with Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah gone from ODIs since their last match in this format. Shanto will likely move into the middle-order with Mohammad Naim and Litton Das set to get into the top-order.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tanzid Hasan, 2 Litton Das (wk), 3 Mohammad Naim, 4 Najmul Hossain Shanto, 5 Towhid Hridoy, 6 Mehidy Hasan Miraz (capt), 7 Jaker Ali, 8 Rishad Hossain, 9 Taskin Ahmed, 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Nahid RanaPitch and conditionsThe weather looks to be mostly clear, so ideally there shouldn’t be any rain interruptions. The pitch itself will likely be your standard Khettarama surface, with any score in the region of 300 a challenging target, while spin is expected to play a prominent role.Stats and trivia Since Mahmudullah’s debut in July 2007, Bangladesh will play their first ODI without any of Mahmudullah, Mortaza, Tamim, Shakib or Mushfiqur Bangladesh have never won an ODI series in Sri Lanka In five innings, Shanto has a century and two fifties against Sri Lanka, averaging 85.50 Hasaranga is one wicket away from 100 ODI wicketsQuotes”Actually, we are good friends. When it comes to playing, it looks like a rivalry. That’s what everyone expects to see – those kinds of games, that kind of heat. But we’re good friends.”
“Our numbers doesn’t necessarily mean we are a bad team. We only played two ODI series last year. We mainly played Tests in 2024. We understand our situation. We are planning to make things better. Hopefully, with regular ODIs, we will be back in full flow.”

'I am concerned' – Mikel Arteta reveals Viktor Gyokeres injury fears as Arsenal striker ruled out of Champions League clash

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admits he is concerned about star striker Viktor Gyokeres after the Swede picked up a muscular injury during the win at Burnley on Saturday. The Gunners return to action this week in the Champions League when they travel to Slavia Prague, but they will face this test without their talisman up front after he missed training on Monday.

Arteta's Gyokeres concerns

Gyokeres has settled straight in at his new club, bagging six goals in 14 appearances across all competitions this season. Although he is yet to score against a top-half club in the Premier League, Arsenal fans have been impressed with their new striker's work on and off the ball as he continues to adapt to life back in England. But despite becoming a mainstay in the starting XI, the former Sporting man is expected to miss some time after being taken off at half-time during the 2-0 win at Turf Moor. That will include the latest instalment of Champions League action, as Arsenal look to maintain their perfect record in the competition in Prague.

Speaking in his press conference ahead of the trip to the Czech Republic, head coach Arteta admitted he is worried about the extent of the 27-year-old's injury. He said: "I am concerned because he hasn't had many muscular issues, and he had to leave the pitch as he was feeling something. That is a concern for a player who is very explosive."

AdvertisementGetty ImagesArsenal in familiar territory

The Gunners now find themselves in a familiar situation. With no Gyokeres, there is no recognised striker available for the club, with both Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz missing as well. The injury comes at an unfortunate time for Arteta, as his side look to maintain their six-point lead at the top of the Premier League table. As mentioned by the Spaniard, Gyokeres has never struggled with injuries in his career. The ex-Brighton and Coventry man has missed just five games for club and country in his career, but a muscle issue for a player who relies on being explosive with his movements is not a good sign. Rivals Tottenham had a similar problem with centre-back Micky van de Ven last season. The Dutchman – known for his pace and running power – tore his hamstring, the worst possible injury for a player of his type. Arteta will be hoping that the extent of Gyokeres' injury is far less serious.

Squad depth set to be tested

On top of Gyokeres, Havertz and Jesus, Arsenal are missing several other key players. Midfielder Martin Zubimendi also reported muscle discomfort during the Burnley match and was substituted late on for Christian Norgaard after receiving treatment. Although the Spaniard is suspended for the trip to Prague after collecting three yellow cards in the competition, he did take part in Monday’s training session, which serves as a positive sign ahead of the Gunners' Premier League meeting with Sunderland this weekend.

Noni Madueke, who arrived from Chelsea in a £50 million deal during the summer, has been out since September with a knee injury picked up during a 1-1 draw against Manchester City. The winger avoided surgery and is reportedly pushing for a return to boost his chances of representing England during the upcoming international break.

Club captain Martin Odegaard has endured a difficult season with recurring shoulder issues and a recent knee injury sustained in last month’s 2-0 win over West Ham. He has not featured since that match, though Arteta is optimistic that Odegaard, along with Havertz and Madueke, could be fit for the upcoming north London derby.

If that was not enough damage to the Arsenal squad, Gabriel Martinelli has also missed the past two games after suffering a thigh strain late in the win against Crystal Palace in October. It means the London club must dig deep as we barrel towards the break, and hope that they can regain their core ahead of a crucial winter period as they push for the title.

Getty Images SportThe year of the Gunners?

Every game will feel like a final for Arsenal this season, as they chase down elusive silverware under Arteta. They remain firm favourites to win the Premier League, and amongst the top dogs in the Champions League as well. But they have been here before, and it only takes one or two slip-ups for the title to slip from a team's grasp; that is a potential banana skin when they visit Sunderland on Saturday.

‘Been a bad, bad time’ – Danny Dyer has tender message for Jarrod Bowen and wife Dani amid West Ham struggles

Danny Dyer and daughter Dani have been chatting about Jarrod Bowen amid a tough time at West Ham. The Hammers sacked manager Graham Potter after just nine months in charge and have since appointed Nuno Espirito Santo as his replacement. Bowen clashed with angry fans at the start of the season after the team's Carabao Cup exit but swiftly apologised and has gone on to score three times in seven appearances in the Premier League for the Hammers.

  • Tough times at West Ham

Dyer's love for West Ham is well known and he's admitted it's been a difficult time for Hammers fans after a dismal start to the season that has seen a change in management. Potter was sacked after managing just six wins from 25 matches in charge after succeeding Julen Lopetegui and West Ham will be hoping Espirito Santo can revive the club's fortunes. The new boss started his tenure with a 1-1 draw away at Everton, with Bowen scoring the equaliser to grab a vital point for the Hammers.

Dyer shows his love for Bowen

Dyer has been happy to show his love for Bowen and hailed the West Ham captain for his efforts this season. Chatting with daughter Dani, Bowen's wife, on their Live and Let Dyers podcast he was told Bowen was taking a nap. The former EastEnders star replied: "Jarrod. He is asleep. He only got back from scoring a goal against Everton. It's been a bad, bad time and obviously you know it's been difficult for everyone involved. But your man, my son in law, has come to the front again. I almost want to go upstairs and turn him over. Tuck him in a little bit more, if his feet are out, maybe cover his feet, if they're a bit cold, just to let him rest for another couple of hours. He really has earnt it."

  • Bowen confident West Ham are on the right track

Bowen spoke about the club's fortunes after the draw with Everton and is confident the club are moving in the right direction under their new boss. He told BBC Sport: "It's a big point for us. We had chances to win the game. They had chances as well so, on reflection, it's probably a fair result. It speaks to the character of the team after going down 1-0. We've got a really good group here that really want to work hard and change our fortunes, and I think you saw that. We've had Nuno for two days and I thought we put in a really good performance. It's about time, putting the work in and listening to the new gaffer. We're heading in the right direction and tonight's a good start."

The new West Ham boss also spoke about his aims: "We have to build on that. Now it is about keeping it simple and trying to give the boys a good identity. We will get there in terms of identity and character, but now it's keeping it simple. The clear message was how we have to approach the game. It is a tough place to come and Everton are a good team in a good moment."

  • West Ham star shines for England

Bowen was also in action for England over the international break and put in a fine cameo in Tuesday's 5-0 win over Latvia that confirmed the Three Lions' qualification for World Cup 2026. The West Ham star grabbed an assist for England's fifth goal and also created more chances than any other players on the pitch despite only featuring for the last 30 minutes of the match in Riga. Former defender Micah Richards was impressed with his performance. He told the Rest is Football podcast: “I think watching the game, it’s more the way they press, the high [press]. But it is [also] about how they’re winning the ball back so quickly. So, once it goes past the first line and then the second line, not even in the mid-block, [they win the ball back] between high and mid-block. Everyone’s out [pressing]. And even a perfect example of that was Bowen.”
