Hussain satisfied despite bad day for England

BRISBANE, Nov 2 AAP – England captain Nasser Hussain was satisfied with his team’s pre-Ashes workout despite watching Queensland dominate the opening to the three-day tour match at Allan Border Field today.Martin Love scored an unbeaten 124 as the Bulls reached 4-333 at stumps on a day that did nothing to enhance England’s reputation before the Ashes series begins at the Gabba on Thursday. But Hussain had wanted his likely Test attack to work through a hard day against quality Queensland batsmen in Stuart Law (68), Andrew Symonds (47) and Jimmy Maher (41) after the Bulls won the toss.”We needed a real hard-work day and that’s just what we got,” Hussain said.”On a hard, flat wicket like this we haven’t got the firepower yet to blast sides out. We win by staying in games and that’s how it’s going to be out here.”Hussain was pleased with the performance of all-rounder Andrew Flintoff (2-61), who bowled 18 overs to prove he had recovered from the double hernia operation which had threatened his Test place. But Andrew Caddick (2-53) was the best bowler in an attack which lacked the ammunition to knock over Love, Law and the fluent Symonds. He claimed Maher and opener Brendan Nash (18) within six balls during a searching 10-over spell in humid conditions.Love, who has an Australian Cricket Board contract, hit 16 boundaries in an important personal knock in front of national selector Trevor Hohns. The 28-year-old, who has become one of the most reliable runscorers in Australian domestic cricket, warned England to expect a tough summer.”They’re going to have their work cut out, but their bowlers are certainly good enough,” Love said after his 23rd first-class century.”If they play on a wicket similar to this, which the Gabba will probably be, it’s going to be hard work for their bowlers.”Caddick was the best of the bowlers by a fair way, and the others seemed to have a few niggles.”Love has hit the ball more crisply during his career but he batted for almost five hours, surviving a confident LBW shout on 77 from the bowling of young quick Simon Jones (0-65 from 16 overs).Law looked the most likely batsman to post a century when he slipped past 50 in good time, but the veteran popped a return catch to Flintoff before the tea break.Symonds then threatened to unleash a typically rapid century before he provided a soft catch behind off Flintoff. He kept England waiting when he thumped left-arm spinner Ashley Giles (0-67 from 20) out of the ground and into a car park of the neighbouring Albion Park trotting track.England paceman Darren Gough, who has been ruled out of the first Test because of his troublesome knee, bowled in the nets and has received permission from Queensland Cricket to play grade cricket in Brisbane next week.Gough will line up for University on the second day of their match against Sandgate-Redcliffe, which has also been allowed to take in an English squad member not required in the first Test.

Fulham: Cottagers want Tommy Doyle

Fulham are reportedly among the clubs eyeing a move for Manchester City youngster Tommy Doyle, according to Football League World.

What’s the story?

Doyle has been with Manchester City since 2009 and has progressed his way through the club’s academy system over the years. His impressive showings for their under-23 side has seen him feature in the senior squad on a handful of occasions.

The 19-year-old has made seven senior appearances to date for Pep Guardiola’s first team, but it doesn’t seem as though he’ll feature on a regular basis for the Premier League champions any time soon.

Manchester City are reportedly keen to find him regular minutes in senior football away from the Etihad Stadium on a temporary basis, and it seems as though he won’t be short of offers.

West Brom, Sheffield United, QPR, Blackburn Rovers, Middlesbrough, Swansea City, Bournemouth, Cardiff City and Coventry City are also believed to be keen on signing Doyle this summer, so Fulham won’t have it all their way when it comes to trying to finalise an agreement for the midfielder.

Strength in depth could be key

Marco Silva’s side will be aiming to win promotion back into the Premier League at the first time of asking this season, and additional strength in depth wouldn’t do any harm.

We’ve already seen the likes of Harrison Reed linked with a move to Leeds this summer, and even though a formal bid is yet to be made, it’s good to see Fulham looking at other options heading towards the 2021/22 campaign.

Doyle could be an ideal signing for the Cottagers, with the youngster looking to make a name for himself in senior football having not been presented with much of an opportunity by Manchester City just yet.

Players who are hungry to prove themselves in senior football could provide the ideal competition for places in a team aiming to be challenging for promotion into the Premier League, and Silva would be hoping that Doyle could make a positive impact at Craven Cottage this term.

He has done that at under-23 level for City, with nine goals and 15 appearances in 50 appearances hinting at his game-changing ability – a trait which was lacking at Fulham last season. Even accounting for them playing at Premier League level, no player managed more than four assists in 2020/21 for Scott Parker’s team, while only Bobby Decordova-Reid scored more than four times [Transfermarkt].

Former Manchester City scout Greg Walsh labelled Doyle as “phenomenal” and “one of the best of his age in Europe” in an interview with HITC back in 2020, and it’s hard not to agree with that statement, especially when Manchester City have already given him seven appearances in their first-team squad so early into his career.

Fulham will know that they face a battle to land his signature this summer, but competition for the likes of Harrison Reed, Tom Cairney and André-Frank Zambo Anguissa is likely to be welcome for Silva ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

If the newly-appointed Fulham manager can fend off numerous other suitors for the Manchester City starlet, it would be an enormous feather in his cap ahead of his first season in the Craven Cottage dugout. Shahid Khan must do all he can to try and ensure that Fulham win the transfer scramble for the 19-year-old.

SPCL 2&3 – Pryke flies through as top four play in Div 3

David Pryke, the South African pace bowler with the "windmill" action, jets into the Lymington Sports Ground tomorrow (SAT) to put the town club’s Southern Electric Premier League Division 2 promotion prospects under threat.Lymington, 18 points behind leaders United Services, have moved into a challenging third spot after winning their last two matches. But the presence of Pryke spearheading the Hungerford attack could put a different complexion on the outcome of the game.Pryke, who is to make only three appearances for the Berkshire side on a whistle stop visit to the UK, took 75 wickets in two seasons for Hungerford in 1999 and 2000 – in between times snapping up 5-32 against the England tourists for his native North West Province."Pryke is a very difficult bowler to face. He bowls quick inswinging yorkers into the batsman’s block-hole," warns Lymington opener Glyn Treagus, who will face the South African at close quarter.Lymington know they must avenge an opening day defeat at Hungerford – who lie in a lean eighth place out of ten – and beat Old Tauntonians & Romsey next week if they are to make a realistic promotion challenge. But Western Australian Under-19 all-rounder Aaron Heal is looking good – an unbeaten 94 against Easton & Martyr Worthy lifting the Perth youngster into sixth place in the Division 2 scoring charts.Leaders United Services expect to be at full strength against mid-table Winchester KS at River Park, while the Hampshire Academy will again keep their selections open for the visit to Sparsholt. The Young Hawks lie just one point behind US will probably include either Jimmy Adams or Lawrie Prittipaul as one of their four professionals.Sparsholt, boosted by the likely return of left-arm swing bowler Mike Ball, face Rowledge in the National Village Championship sixth round at the Norman Edwards Memorial Ground on Sunday, 2pm.Easton & Martyr Worthy, beaten at Lymington last week, need to return to winning ways against Trojans, who are struggling at the foot of the table with only one win from nine games.OTs & Romsey are again without Ian Tulk for the visit to Rowledge, whose own strength is sapped by the absence of newly-wed all-rounder Chris Yates. It’s a key afternoon in Premier Division 3, where the top four clubs play each other.Alton’s home match with high scoring Purbrook is the main attraction – Julian Ballinger’s side knowing how important it is to dismiss 463-run South African Willem Prozesky, who hammered a best yet 153 at Hartley Wintney last week."We’ve been in good form for the past two weeks, beating St Cross Symondians and Leckford, but it’s going to be a terrific game," Ballinger forecast.St Cross are unchanged against Flamingo’s, who have won their last five games to climb into a highest-ever third place in the SEPL.Waiting in the wings for any slip up are Hursley Park, who entertain Paultons, who have won their last two matches after experiencing an indifferent start to the season. It’s an equally crucial day at the bottom, with basement boys Hook & Newnham Basics entertaining Redlynch & Hale, the club immediately above them in the table.

Rangers transfer update on Kamara

Transfer insider Gianluigi Longari has dropped a worrying update on Rangers star Glen Kamara’s future at Ibrox.

The Lowdown: Kamara impressing

Kamara has come off the back of a very successful 2020/21 season at Ibrox, playing in no fewer than 28 games in total in the Scottish Premiership to help them snatch the title off of the hands of Celtic.

Now representing Finland at Euro 2020, he will certainly have a spotlight on him amid the summer transfer window.

The Latest: Watford eye Kamara

According to Longari, who covers transfers for Sportitalia TV, Premier League newcomers Watford are currently in ‘ongoing dialogues’ with the Glasgow club over the potential signing of Kamara.

Their main focus is Seko Fofana of Lens, but Kamara is clearly still a target for the Hornets.

The Verdict: Only sell for right price

Given that Watford will now enjoy the riches of the Premier League, Steven Gerrard’s men could demand a huge fee if they were willing to let Kamara go.

At 25 years of age, and bearing in mind that they bought him for a mere £50,000 from Dundee FC back in January 2019, there is potential to yield a massive profit from a sale.

Yes, Kamara is clearly very important for the Gers – former Ibrox star now pundit Alan Hutton rightfully labelled him as ‘outstanding’ for his efforts this season.

That said, the club may never get another chance to cash in big if the midfielder enjoys an impressive Euro 2020 campaign.

.

Newcastle outcast Atsu wanted

Two clubs reportedly want to sign Christian Atsu from Newcastle United once the summer transfer window opens.

The Lowdown: Atsu frozen out

Atsu barely played for the Magpies in the 2020/21 season – in fact, he made only one appearance, coming on for just 10 minutes in their 1-0 home win over Blackburn Rovers in the Carabao Cup second round (Transfermarkt).

Therefore, both club and player will surely be looking for a move away from the northeast for the Ghanaian, with two clubs reportedly interested in his signature.

The Latest: Two clubs want Atsu

As per Sports World Ghana, both Huddersfield Town and Al Hilal are interested in signing Atsu once the market opens. His current deal with the Magpies expires on June 30, so he will become a free agent after that assuming that a new contract is not offered to him in the meantime.

That seems highly unlikely as Steve Bruce has already told him to find a new club, and with regards to Huddersfield, manager Carlos Corberan has tasked the Terriers’ management to sign him up, with a meeting between the Championship club’s sporting director and the player’s representatives expected to take place in the coming days.

The Verdict: Atsu must leave

A deal for Atsu to leave Newcastle would suit all parties involved.

With the player currently earning £30,000 per week, the Magpies would save a lot of money by getting rid of the Ghana international, and they already have players like Allan Saint-Maximin and Ryan Fraser who can play in his position on the left flank.

As for Atsu himself, he needs to be going out and playing regular football, especially being 29 years of age, and Huddersfield could well be able to offer him that given that Corberan has already expressed his strong desire to sign him.

With his current contract at St James’ Park running out next month, he will likely be able to move on as a free agent anyway, so any potential deal shouldn’t be too complicated.

Chris Waugh drops Newcastle transfer update

The Athletic’s Chris Waugh has delivered a major transfer update involving Newcastle United’s summer plans.

What’s the story?

After finishing the Premier League season on a high – mainly thanks to the goals of Arsenal loanee Joe Willock – Steve Bruce’s side can head into the transfer window with a little bit more optimism.

And, based off Waugh’s fresh update, it appears the Magpies are keen on making some significant changes to the squad, and there is also the potential of there being a major boost to the finances too.

He said: “Ideally, Bruce wants to sign at least one midfielder, perhaps two – Willock, or a similar box-to-box type, plus potentially a combative holding type – as well as bring in at least one new centre-half, a left-back and another forward.

“While Bruce is aware that his pockets will be pretty empty, he is hopeful that Newcastle’s late-season leap from 17th place at the start of this month to 12th in the final table – a jump which could be worth more than £15m in merit-based Premier League prize money – will at least slightly improve his capacity to spend.”

Fans should be excited

While Waugh is hardly suggesting that Newcastle are going to embark on a £100m plus spending spree this summer, it is at least reassuring, and exciting actually, that the Magpies are keen on making some major additions to their squad.

The Tyneside club appear to be in for a whole new spine, and if they go on to have any of the kind of success that the likes of Willock and Callum Wilson had at the club during the Premier League season, then that will certainly be a job well done.

And, in terms of the finances, the impressive late-season form could well be the biggest plus point of Newcastle’s season. Waugh indicates that the jump from just outside the relegation places to comfortably in mid-table could be worth around the £15m mark, and that’s the kind of significant chunk of money that could be used in efforts to convince Arsenal to part ways with Willock.

It’s exactly why fans should be more excited about their prospects in this transfer window than they may have been before.

Meanwhile, this Newcastle decision could leave fans furious…
