Jacob Bethell admits he 'probably should have played more' this summer

Youngster struggled for form after watching from the sidelines during India Tests

Jacob Bethell has admitted he “should have played slightly more” domestic cricket while he was England’s spare batter during their Test series against India.Bethell, 21, played only four matches – three in the T20 Blast, one in the County Championship – between the start of the Test series in June and his call-up for the fifth Test at The Oval, which began on July 31. He faced only 85 balls across those matches, and looked noticeably short of rhythm when scoring 6 and 5 during England’s narrow defeat after Ben Stokes was ruled out through injury.Specifically, he could have played some role in Warwickshire’s Championship fixtures against Sussex (which overlapped with the second Test against India) or Worcestershire (which clashed with the fourth), but decided in conjunction with England’s management that he should stay with the Test squad instead.Related

England blown to bits-and-pieces as part-timers' bowling strategy backfires

Ahead of Sunday’s ODI in Southampton, Bethell had only faced 387 balls across the English summer, compared to 1,480 in the 2024 season. His lack of cricket has been discussed incessantly in the media in recent months, with suggestions he should have returned from the IPL early, or played for Warwickshire in the Metro Bank Cup instead of the Hundred.”There’s been a little bit of noise but I don’t listen to it much,” Bethell told Sky Sports. “If I’m honest, I probably should have played slightly more when I wasn’t playing in the Test matches, but that’s something that I’ll take and I’ll learn from that.”Even though I didn’t play much in that Test series, I was around the group for a lot of it, and just to watch a high-octane Test series like that was unbelievable. I got a chance in the last Test and unfortunately couldn’t go on there and put in a performance, but I’ve loved [the summer]. Playing for England is a dream come true and hopefully I can do it for a long time to come.”Bethell will play in England’s T20Is against South Africa next week before becoming their youngest-ever captain in Ireland a week later. He is then likely to be part of their white-ball tour to New Zealand, before travelling to Australia as the spare batter for the Ashes, and heading to Sri Lanka then India for a white-ball series leading into the T20 World Cup.”Now I’m looking at what I have ahead and there’s a lot of cricket, so that little gap where I didn’t play actually might be quite nice for me,” Bethell said.Marcus Trescothick, who will deputise as England coach in Ireland, said on Saturday that Bethell had a “great opportunity” to gain captaincy experience at a young age.”We’re very clear that he can step into that role and be very comfortable with that,” Trescothick said. “The attention has been outside of our circle. There’s been some media scrutiny around him playing and doing this job [captaincy], but within our circle that’s never been the case. We manage it accordingly and we’re not going to put anyone in a position that is not suitable to their character or their calibre.”

Howe has found his next Callum Wilson at Newcastle & it's not Woltemade

Eddie Howe’s changes for Newcastle United’s mid-week tie versus Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup didn’t disrupt the Magpies’ winning streak one bit.

Instead, some of the reserves that were thrust into the first-team spotlight for the occasion shone to collect Newcastle’s third straight victory in all competitions, as Aaron Ramsdale proudly kept a clean sheet in place of regular shot-stopper Nick Pope.

Alongside Ramsdale, Joe Willock also picked up an assist to steer the Toon to a 2-0 success to respond to some of his St James’ Park critics, with Fabian Schar – who had been frozen out of Howe’s first team picture in the Premier League as of late – also chipping in with a goal himself.

In the past, Newcastle also would have fallen back on Callum Wilson for ties such as these, with Wilson once a trusty second-in-command figure on Tyneside in the attacking areas, before his career up North began to unravel.

Wilson's goalscoring heroics at Newcastle

Before Wilson was allowed to leave the building this summer, he was viewed as a dependable source of goals in tricky moments.

The 33-year-old striker – who will potentially face off against his old club on Sunday, having signed for West Ham United – managed to bag a high 49 goals for the Magpies from 130 games, despite finding his minutes were depleting after Alexander Isak’s earth-shuddering move to England in 2022.

Amazingly, nine of those league strikes would be put away during the 2022/23 campaign by the top-flight veteran, even as he started just nine Premier League games all season long.

In the end, however, recurring injury issues would be the former AFC Bournemouth attacker’s undoing, with 29 games missed through injury during his final season on Tyneside souring his long-standing affiliation with the club.

Still, Wilson will surely be remembered fondly for his regular heroics from off the bench, with one of his Toon coaches in Graeme Jones, hailing him as “the best matchday finisher” he has worked alongside.

Unfortunately, though, time creeps up on us all.

But, Howe could have his next iteration of Wilson in his star-studded Newcastle camp right now, as the star in question also holds a standout record when being unleashed into games from off the bench.

Howe's new Callum Wilson

The obvious figure who could be considered Howe’s next Wilson is Nick Woltemade, with the towering 6-foot-6 German a similar menace in front of goal.

At the height of his St James’ Park powers, the 33-year-old very rarely needed a second invitation to power home a fierce effort, with the former Stuttgart man very much operating in the same manner right now as a potent marksman.

So far, Woltemade can boast a Premier League goal every 120 minutes, with four strikes finding the back of the net from the lethal goalscoring machine from a mere average of just 28.5 touches per contest.

But, as much as he shares the same instinctive style in front of goal as Wilson, he is leading the line for the Toon week in week out now in the absence of the aforementioned Isak, instead of operating in the shadows.

If you want an example of a talent who often has to make do with scraps off the bench, sometimes owing to injury difficulties, and who still picks up a goal and an assist here and there, Harvey Barnes might well be your better bet when looking at his Newcastle numbers from this campaign in isolation.

All four of the ex-Leicester City man’s goals and assists this campaign have come about when he’s been gifted late cameos, with two whirlwind strikes recently falling into his lap in the Champions League against Benfica – from just 27 minutes of action – very much backing up previous comments that the one-time England international is a “menace” in attacking areas by journalist Mikey Stafford.

17 goals have now come his way from 77 Newcastle appearances, which is a mightily impressive record when you delve into the facts further that he has missed 38 games in total through injury on Tyneside, since leaving the King Power Stadium behind.

But, when he is fit, Howe knows he can count on him to bail his team out of some tense moments, as a new Wilson-like presence is unearthed.

Woltemade, it must be said, is undoubtedly emerging as Howe’s new attacking figurehead, but Barnes is more than a quality weapon in reserve.

Casemiro replacement: Man Utd to make £42m bid for "one of the best CMs"

Manchester United have endured a phenomenal upturn in form over the last couple of weeks, as seen by their run of three Premier League victories in a row.

Ruben Amorim appears to be finally silencing the doubters, after being subject to countless barrages of criticism from supporters and pundits across the country.

However, his work in the transfer window is largely to thank, with his additions from the recent summer transfer window already having an immediate impact at Old Trafford.

Bryan Mbeumo arrived in a £71m deal from Brentford and has already taken the role as the Red Devils’ main talisman, as seen by his tally of five goals in his first nine league outings.

Despite the additions within the final third, Amorim and the hierarchy are still hunting for a new central midfielder to take the first-team squad to the next level in the near future.

Man Utd’s hunt for a new midfielder in January

Over the last couple of months, United have been hugely touted with a winter move for Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson, after his phenomenal start to the 2025/26 season.

The 22-year-old has started all nine Premier League games to date, resulting in his maiden England call-up to Thomas Tuchel’s squad – subsequently cementing his place as a regular starter.

However, any deal could prove to be a somewhat expensive one, with Sean Dyche’s side currently demanding a fee in the region of £100m for his signature.

He’s not the English midfielder currently in their sights, with Borussia Dortmund star Jobe Bellingham another target for the Red Devils, according to one Spanish outlet.

They have reported that Amorim’s side are preparing a €50m (£42m) offer for the 20-year-old despite only joining the Bundesliga outfit back in the recent summer transfer window.

It also states that the player is growing frustrated with his lack of minutes, having only started two league outings in 2025/26 and featured for a total of 208 minutes.

Why United’s £42m target would be the perfect Casemiro replacement

Many United fans expected Casemiro’s minutes at United to be extremely limited this season after struggling to impress, some Amorim took the reins back in November last year.

The Brazilian, who’s now 33, has even been called into question by numerous pundits over the last few years, many of whom have claimed he’s no longer at the level required for the Premier League.

Jamie Carragher infamously said that ‘the football has left him’ and recommended that the former Real Madrid star move to Saudi Arabia or America to end his career.

However, he’s been a key component of Amorim’s side this campaign, subsequently featuring in eight of the nine league outings – even scoring twice and notching an assist.

Casemiro’s latest goal came in the recent triumph over Brighton and Hove Albion, stepping up to the plate when the manager and team needed him most.

Despite his recent form at Old Trafford, there’s little denying he’s entering the final years of his career at the top level, with his current deal at the Red Devils set to expire in the summer of 2026.

The supporters shouldn’t worry about a potential departure, especially if the rumours around a move for Bellingham come to fruition in the winter or summer transfer window.

Whilst the Englishman has struggled for action in the current season, he’s still managed to produce numerous incredible stats that would see him be a monster hit with the fans in Manchester.

Bellingham, who’s been labelled “one of the best midfielders” by the Second Tier Podcast, has completed 88% of his attempted, whilst ranking in the 89th percentile for touches per 90.

Such figures highlight his incredible ability with the balm at his feet, with such a skillset adding yet another talented technician to the heart of Amorim’s first-team squad.

Out of possession, the youngster has been just as impressive, making 2.2 tackles per 90 to date, whilst also winning 6.5 duels per 90 – highlighting his workmanlike style.

Other tallies, such as a 71% aerial duel success rate and 1.7 fouls won per 90, showcase his all-round ability, which has made him a constant nuisance to countless opponents.

£42m may seem a hefty sum of money for the Dortmund star, but it certainly could prove to be a fantastic piece of business if he reaches his full potential.

At just 20, he has bags of time to develop further, whilst also offering the club a long-term replacement for the experienced Casemiro into 2026/27 and beyond.

A Radebe-type player: £10m star has become Leeds' "most important player"

Elland Road has been home to many Leeds United greats over the years.

Even when the Whites weren’t competing in the Premier League, there were a handful of top stars always entertaining the West Yorkshire masses, with names such as Luciano Becchio and Pablo Hernandez sticking out, among many others.

Of course, the current crop is beloved in their own right, having just lifted the Championship title on a mammoth points haul of 100 points.

But, they have some catching up to do in the daunting environment of the Premier League to be seen in the same glowing light as some past top-flight icons at Leeds, with Lucas Radebe still viewed as an all-time hero, twenty years on from his final outing for the club.

Radebe's heroics at Leeds

Costing just £250k to obtain in 1994 from South African side Kaizer Chiefs, not many would have anticipated that many years down the line, Radebe would end up being Leeds’ formidable captain in the Champions League against the likes of AC Milan.

Still, despite a slow beginning to life at Elland Road, which saw him make just 12 appearances for the club during his debut season, the no-nonsense number 5 would eventually leave a lasting mark on the Leeds faithful, with Radebe going on to be affectionately known as “The Chief” for his warrior-like showings.

Starting his really early playing days as a goalkeeper, Radebe would ultimately find his calling in England as a tough and bruising centre-back figure, with ex-Leeds teammate Nigel Martyn referring to him as a “fierce competitor” when glowingly recalling his career in 2021.

Further lauded as an “absolute legend” by Martyn, the 70-time South Africa international’s vital importance to the Leeds cause is clear to see when looking back on his long-standing stay at the club, with 260 appearances picked up by Radebe across ten seasons, even seeing the Whites get near to Champions League glory at the turn of the millennium.

Unfortunately, persistent knee problems would see his minutes deplete by the close of those ten long campaigns, but with Radebe recently being unveiled as a new club ambassador, it’s clear he’s still held in high regard to this very day.

Amazingly, Daniel Farke could well have a Radebe-type player on his hands right now.

Farke's own Radebe-type star

Since Radebe hung up his boots, there haven’t been an overflowing amount of standout number fives who have pulled on that famous number, with Ben White one notable name, among transfer misfires such as Robin Koch and Giuseppe Bellusci.

Instead, it could well be Leeds’ current number 6 that embodies Radebe most closely in Joe Rodon, with the Welshman very much a full-blooded presence for Farke and Co, in the same vein as the South African before him.

He has even used his aerial expertise this season to power home a header versus AFC Bournemouth at the end of September, with the Swansea-born “warrior” – as he has been labelled by his manager – only one goal shy of Radebe’s goal count.

But, it’s his overall numbers in a defensive sense that put him even more on the same pedestal as the feared former number 5, with Rodon routinely putting his body on the line and coming up clutch in crunch moments to ensure his side isn’t breached at will.

Rodon has undoubtedly become as crucial for Farke as Radebe was for the litany of managers he worked alongside at Elland Road, with the 27-year-old collecting a mightily impressive 44 clean sheets across three seasons of league action.

Yet, he hasn’t always had it his own way at Leeds, with the disappointment of promotion falling through at the close of the 2023/24 season meaning he could have walked away from West Yorkshire for good, having only been at the club on loan.

He opted to join permanently for £10m instead and in the words of journalist Isaac Johnson, he has since gone on to be in the debate as Farke’s “most important player.”

It will now be up to the resilient defender to steer his side to immediate Premier League safety, with the potential very much there for him to be known as a top-flight great, much like Radebe is forever immortalised as.

Five openers in 12 Tests? Australia's revolving door could continue

After trying Smith, McSweeney, Konstas and Head, Australia could go for either Labuschagne or even Inglis for the WTC final

Andrew McGlashan13-May-2025

Usman Khawaja has had four different opening partners since David Warner’s retirement•Getty Images

Since David Warner’s retirement in January 2024, Australia have used four different openers other than Usman Khawaja, who has been the only constant in 11 Tests in this while. Ahead of the World Test Championship (WTC) final from June 11 against South Africa at Lord’s, there is a possibility that there could be a fifth different opener in 12 Tests during this period.Sam Konstas has a chance of resuming his Test career after the two outings against India, but the selectors might again get creative. Marnus Labuschagne is in the frame, despite an average of 28.33 in this WTC cycle, while Josh Inglis, who made a century on debut in Sri Lanka, has not been discounted either, with national selector George Bailey suggesting the opening position does not need to be a specialist role.”I think [Josh] could do it, but I’ve said the same about Marnus,” Bailey said after confirmation of Australia’s 15-player squad for the final, and the subsequent three-Test tour of the West Indies. “I do think it’s a role that more people could do. I know there is a prevailing thought it is a specialised role.Related

“In certain conditions, there’s opportunities at different times that guys could do it – whether that’s England for Josh, or whether it’s in that middle order, where he’s had success already.”Labuschagne has opened 15 times in first-class cricket, but only once since 2016 – although he did score a century on that occasion for Glamorgan against Middlesex, last May. Inglis, meanwhile, has never done it in first-class cricket.Australia have looked beyond frontline red-ball openers since Warner’s retirement – and with mixed results. Steven Smith had first dibs on the role, largely to allow Cameron Green to return at No. 4. Smith lasted as an opener across only four Tests against West Indies and New Zealand, although his stint did include a superb 91 not out at the Gabba. Nathan McSweeney then made his debut against India in Perth, having opened for the first time a couple of weeks earlier for Australia A, and like many, found life tough against Jasprit Bumrah. Then, in Sri Lanka earlier this year, Travis Head reverted to the job in what had intially been a long-term plan after the impact he made in India in 2023, which meant Konstas, a specialist opener in his brief domestic career, made way after just two matches. There is a view that Konstas will play in the West Indies even if he doesn’t feature in the WTC final. But if someone else gets the opportunity against South Africa and is successful, then that would leave the selectors with further tricky decisions.Steven Smith and Travis Head are among the batters whom Australia have tried as openers since 2024•Associated Press

“We have been very strong on trying to delineate between the World Test Championship final, and separate the West Indies tour, which will be slightly different,” Bailey said.Konstas made headlines with his aggressive approach against Bumrah at the MCG last Boxing Day, in an innings highlighted by scoops and ramps which helped gain Australia the ascendancy. In the following match, at the SCG, he was caught in a heated exchange with the Indians late on the opening day. Later in the match, he made a swift 22 off 17 balls in Australia’s chase. On his return to domestic cricket, Konstas first scored a half-century for Sydney Thunder in the BBL, and then an excellent One-Day Cup hundred for New South Wales (NSW), before leaving the Sri Lanka tour early. Back home, he fell in extraordinary fashion for NSW against Victoria in the Sheffield Shield, when he missed an attempted sweep at Scott Boland in the third over of the match.Konstas managed to recalibrate himself for the final two Shield games of the season, and finished with a brace of half-centuries, which encouraged those around him that he was beginning to settle after a frenzied period.”I think Andrew [McDonald, the head coach] has spoken to this, and [NSW coach] Greg Shipperd spoke about it at the end of the year – it’s pretty clear that he’s not the finished product,” Bailey said of Konstas. “He’s on a journey, [and] he’s a highly talented player.”The things we like [are] he’s a quick learner, he’s really keen to learn, [and he] has an amazing ability to adapt and change the way he plays. Any opportunity that he does get around the squad – whether that’s in the XI or around the squad – I think he’s going to continue to improve.”It may not be too long before Australia are searching for another new opener, with Khawaja now 38, and with an uncertainty over whether he will continue after the home Ashes next summer.”Clearly, this is a team that will be, as all teams are, in transition over the next period of time,” Bailey said. “But whether that’s in the next six months, 12 months [or] 18 months, you are constantly trying to build out depth. If there are no players retiring or moving on just for the very fact that we play so much cricket there’s injuries, and you want to make sure there’s always someone ready to step in – and not just fill a spot, but be ready to perform.”

Isak 2.0: Newcastle hero felt "stabbed in the back" after Barca move denied

Newcastle United clung on until the bitter end, but ultimately were forced into selling Alexander Isak to Liverpool on transfer deadline day.

Oh well, at least the Toon bagged themselves two successors in Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade, and for a similar combined price at that.

But it stings, for the Sweden striker played a talismanic part in winning the Carabao Cup and returning to the Champions League last season, ending three years of prolific performances on Tyneside.

Why Isak wanted to leave Newcastle

Isak, 25, has signed for the Premier League champions in a record-breaking £125m deal and will front Arne Slot’s side for the next six years (unless he pushes for an earlier exit, of course).

Isak's Premier League record before joining Liverpool.

While United earned themselves an incredible paycheck for the forward’s sale, the nature of his departure has left more than just a sour taste, with Isak’s hiatus over the past few weeks having directly affected Eddie Howe’s side’s start to the season, two points from three Premier League fixtures.

His goal-per-game rate is a thing to behold, and Newcastle would do very well indeed if Isak’s replacements managed to perform at a level, in the aggregate, resembling his prowess.

Many of a Toon persuasion feel that PIF should have been stronger in their rebuttal of Isak’s wishes, as was the case way back when with the club’s original version of the 6 foot 3 striker.

Newcastle's original Isak

David Ginola was one of the Premier League’s original mavericks. The 58-year-old has been retired for many years, but is still remembered fondly by those who recall his days gliding up and down the left flank, sometimes finding a place down the central channel.

Having won the PFA Player of the Year in 1999 with Tottenham Hotspur, the former France international was truly one of the best in the business when in his heyday, and Newcastle must regret having only enjoyed his talents across two campaigns.

Bringing the winger over to England from Paris Saint-Germain in 1995, former boss Kevin Keegan sought to shape Newcastle into a bona fide superpower, and Ginola was very much a part of that process.

A winger of great flair and wow-factor, Ginola hardly enjoyed his most auspicious years at Newcastle, featuring 76 times and posting seven goals and 16 assists, but he still played a thrilling role, one of the most skilful stars to have graced St. James’ Park.

Who could forget that strike against Manchester United?

However, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows across those two terms in black and white, having remarked that Newcastle and Keegan had left him feeling “stabbed in the back” after rejecting a move to Barcelona in the summer of 1996.

Ginola felt the potential bid marked a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but he would stay on Tyneside for another year before earning a move to Tottenham, where he would form the bulk of his football on English shores.

Could there be parallels between the two situations? Isak’s refusal to play for Newcastle was more incendiary, for sure, as was his public statement that demanded the Magpies allow him to move to Liverpool before the end of the transfer window. He got his wish.

Ultimately, neither player went on to play for many years at Newcastle after a powerhouse came a-calling, and though the present Isak situation stings, Howe has instilled a winning mentality, and St. James’ Park will sing again without the Sweden sensation in their mix.

'The biggest fine on the list' – Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac's strict Wrexham rules revealed as former star reveals £500 punishment

Wrexham’s Hollywood-owned rise has been built not just on investment but on discipline — and a £500 fine is proof of that. Former goalkeeper Ben Foster has revealed that skipping the Red Dragons’ annual Christmas party comes with the heaviest punishment on the squad’s fines list, underlining the culture of unity set by Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac.

Foster has lifted the lid on Wrexham’s internal fines system, revealing that the biggest penalty players face is for missing the team’s Christmas bash. The former England international spotted the list during a recent visit and was surprised to find a £500 sanction for failing to attend. It highlights the emphasis owners Reynolds and Mac have placed on togetherness off the pitch.

Scouse not English! Liverpool end 417-match run in Europe naming a homegrown player in starting lineup with first all-foreign XI

Liverpool have ended a 417-match unbroken run of naming a homegrown player in their starting XI for a European fixture. The Reds face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday, and Arne Slot has not named a single English player in his team. There are four homegrown players on the bench, however.

Slot makes huge call

Liverpool face Atleti in the Champions League on Wednesday, and Slot has made a remarkable decision, as he has opted against including a single English player in his starting XI. There are four English players on the bench: Freddie Woodman, Joe Gomez, Rio Ngumoha, and Jayden Danns. But they are absent from the first-team.

Perhaps the headline news is the inclusion of Alexander Isak in the XI, as he makes his debut after his £125 million ($171m) move from Newcastle. Britain is represented in the XI, as Scotland international Andrew Robertson starts at left-back. Four Dutch players start: Jeremie Frimpong, Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch, and Cody Gakpo.

Slot looking for European success

Slot's side fell short in the Champions League last season, losing to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties in the Round of 16. Given how successful their domestic season was, the Dutchman will be desperate to put that right.

Bad news for Martinelli: Arsenal "preparing" £52m bid to sign "magician"

It’s already been a very busy transfer window at Arsenal.

So far, the Gunners have brought in six new recruits, signing Viktor Gyökeres, Martín Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Christian Nørgaard, and Kepa Arrizabalaga for around £187m.

According to Sam Dean of The Telegraph, this is the first time since transfer windows were introduced that the Gunners have signed six players before their first pre-season fixture, last making six or more signings in July all the way back in 1997.

However, as Mikel Arteta targets the Premier League title, they are not done yet, so could the most exciting addition be yet to arrive, a move that would be bad news for one of the club’s longest-serving players?

Arsenal need to add creativity

Following victories over AC Milan and Newcastle in Singapore, Arsenal’s Asia tour ended on a sour note.

On Thursday, the Gunners were beaten 1-0 by North London rivals Tottenham at the brand-new Kai Tak Sports Park in Hong Kong.

The only goal of the evening came on the cusp of half-time; David Raya played a hospital pass to Myles Lewis-Skelly, who had his pocket picked by Pape Matar Sarr, who then lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper from inside the centre circle.

However, it was at the other end where supporters’ concerns lay, creating just one big chance, while only one of 16 shots found the target, according to SofaScore, with the Gunners unable to break down a low block in the second half, reverting to the familiar horse shoe of doom, passing from side-to-side without any penetration.

Thus, as they seek to address this lack of creativity, journalist Sébastien Vidal reported that Arsenal are “preparing to submit” a £52m bid to Crystal Palace in an attempt to sign Eberechi Eze, who he claims is “keen” to join this summer.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Elsewhere, Dom Smith of the Evening Standard documents that Eze’s £68m release clause actually expires on 15 August, just ahead of Palace’s Premier League opener, but they still intend to make an offer irrespective of this deadline.

So, could the 27-year-old be the fabled final piece in the jigsaw, as Gooners everywhere dream of a first Premier League title since 2004?

Where Eberechi Eze would fit in at Arsenal

It is not entirely clear where Eze would fit into Arteta’s team, but this is exactly why he would be such an exciting addition, given the need for something a bit different.

Zubimendi’s arrival suggests that Declan Rice will be deployed as the left eight, given license to get forward alongside Martin Ødegaard, while Mikel Merino and Kai Havertz are also options for that left-sided midfield role.

So, could the 27-year-old become the starter wide on the left-wing, given that many Gunners fans believe a Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli upgrade is required?

As noted by Simon Collings of the Evening Standard, very few members of the Arsenal squad produce a better ‘work ethic’ than Martinelli, praising his ‘brilliant defensive work’, but there has been a clear decline in the Brazilian’s attacking output, as the table below documents.

As the table notes, when comparing the last three seasons, the vast majority of Martinelli’s attacking statistics peaked during Arsenal’s first title challenge in 2022/23, and have subsequently plateaued, namely goals, assists, shots, chances created, and dribbling.

So, would the English “magician,” as dubbed by pundit Micah Richards, represent a major upgrade?

Well, ahead of their clash at Selhurst in November, Fulham manager Marco Silva labelled Eze a “top player”, adding “I really enjoy watching him play”.

Meantime, Daryl Gouilard of Total Football Analysis is impressed by his ‘technical ability’, thriving as a ‘primary playmaker’ who tends to drift towards the left, while Sam Tabuteau of Breaking the Lines notes that he is capable of producing ‘match-winning moments’.

So, let’s compare Eze to Martinelli.

As the table documents, Eze’s attacking statistics were universally more impressive than those of Martinelli in the Premier League last season, registering more assists, creating more chances, and completing a higher percentage of his take-ons.

Thus, it is undeniable that the England international would be an amazing signing for Arsenal, and they might just need him if they’re going to overtake big-spending reigning champions Liverpool, and it would be bad news for Martinelli.
