Nottinghamshire make short work of Durham's cunning plan thanks to Joey Evison five-for

Nottinghamshire stride into top flight as young swing bowler stars

Nottinghamshire 328 (Patterson-White 73, Slater 60, Clarke 48, Rushworth 4-75, Raine 3-63) and 125 for 5 (Hameed 58) lead Durham 165 (Evison 5-21, Broad 3-36) by 288 runsNottinghamshire brushed aside Durham’s attempt to manufacture a place in Division One of the Championship with artificially short boundaries as they took a stranglehold on the match at Emirates Riverside and, in the process, assured themselves of their own qualification for the September culmination to the season. It is quite a transformation for a county that had to wait until early May before ending a 1,043-day run without a victory. Those short boundaries were intended to propel Durham to maximum batting points, only for them to be dismissed for 165, not manage a single batting point, and concede a first-innings lead of 163. Notts extended that to a lead of 288 with five wickets remaining by the close as every ball resisted by Haseeb Hameed , before Scott Borthwick spun one past his defence, for 58, shortly before the close, communicated that he was in no mood to relax even though promotion was assured.Nottinghamshire now join Yorkshire, Lancashire and Somerset as claimants to Division One places in the end-of-season climax. Warwickshire are now strong favourites to join them, with Durham having to hope for an extraordinary victory plus a Warwickshire defeat on Wednesday to pull off a miracle. That leaves Gloucestershire desperately trying to stave off defeat against Hampshire at Cheltenham. A forecast of unbroken sunshine suggests only an overnight Covid alert, and immediate cancellation, can save them. Not that deliberately getting your phone to ‘ping’ would be a particularly moral way to pass the evening.Joey Evison, a 19-year-old medium pacer, England U-19 via Stamford School, destroyed Durham’s first innings with a post-lunch spell of 5 for 21 in eight overs. If Durham could fiddle the boundaries, they could do nothing about the weather and leaden skies hung over Emirates Riverside, as if in meteorological denunciation, until minutes before their innings was complete.Evison, who swings the ball, predominantly away from the right-hander, accepted his opportunity with growing excitement. It was a decent spell of swing bowling, a career-best that he can take pride in, but he will not find many batting line-ups as accommodating in the future. At close of play, he excitedly announced Notts’ qualification before the country’s cricket websites had worked out what was happening. And people fear that we are about to surrender to an automated society.”We’re going into that top conference of the County Championship,” he said. “That’s where we wanted to be looking at our targets for the season. We’re looking to push for that win tomorrow. Getting the five-wicket haul is one of those things I can tick off early in my career. I didn’t know what was going on. Getting four wickets in four overs has not happened to me before. It’s one of those moments that you have to embrace.”Two of his wickets, David Bedingham and Borthwick, required decent deliveries to remove batsmen of proven ability; Bedingham remains on course to be first to 1,000 runs, even if we did once imagine he might pull it off by the end of May, and it’s now July 13. Borthwick’s batting form has been much patchier but he carried a captain’s desire for success in his first season in the role. The other three wickets were gifts, inadequate responses to a high-pressure day.Durham’s openers fell to Stuart Broad – the presence of an England player, limbering up for the India Test series, being quite a bonus in mid-July. Both Cameron Bancroft and Rob Jones fell to big breakbacks. Notts’ loyalists would have watched the replays and judged them stone dead. Durham supporters would have been aghast. Both were probably umpire’s call.Related

Even so, at 77 for 2 with the afternoon session an over old, Durham might have imagined that 400 – and maximum batting points – was still possible. Bedingham, who now plays as an overseas player since his ancestry visa became an irrelevance, once again looking a player of understated class, and Borthwick was purposefully scrapping away. Then Evison, the fifth seamer to be used, was thrown the ball for the first over of the afternoon. His fifth ball was one of the best of the day, swinging back from around leg stump and tempting Bedingham to hunt out the legside. That was the first of four wickets to fall for nine runs in 37 balls; the management plotting about the boundaries had taken longer than the time it took to make it a pointless exercise.Evison, whose opportunities last season were limited because of a foot injury, removed Sean Dickson for a 13-ball duck, a horrible sliced pull shot which flew skywards and into the hands of the stand-in wicketkeeper Joe Clarke. The left-handed Borthwick was beaten by outswing twice in the next over. The first fell on the half-volley to the diving Brett Hutton at second slip, but it proved to be a useful warm-up exercise as he held another low catch, this time between his legs, later in the same over. Ned Eckersley fell for a second-ball duck, Evison this time appealing while sat on his bottom after falling over in his delivery stride. It was another marginal leg before decision, but if you stand in front of your stumps, as is the in-vogue method, and you find an umpire in ‘out’ mood then you have brought it upon yourself.By now, the short boundaries had been forgotten []. When Ben Raine tried to clear them, he fell at deep* square (*the word deep is used advisably). Lyndon James, who even then was in from the rope, took a routine catch.Hameed took advantage of clear skies after tea, as did some of the crowd who went into somnolent mode, enjoying the sun on their face and presuming Division Two was now a certainty. The next time they watch Championship cricket, autumn will be creeping nearer.Hameed clipped Rushworth to the boundary to reach his fifth half-century of the season from his 100th delivery. Durham did not give up the ghost, with Matt Salisbury and Matty Potts taking two wickets each, and who knows, if they wrap up Notts’ innings in the first hour tomorrow and then slog for all they are worth, those short boundaries might yet turn out to be a masterstroke. The clever money, though, is elsewhere.

Contact made: Rangers make move to sign £34,000-a-week attacker for Clement

Rangers are said to have made a move in a bid to bring a 35-cap international attacker to Ibrox, according to a recent report.

Philippe Clement’s side are now fully in the mix of their 2024/25 season, as the club has played two league games in the Scottish Premiership, picking up four points out of a possible six. However, there will be disappointment that instead of playing in the Champions League this season, Rangers will have to settle for Europa League football once again. But despite the early exit, the club will hope this can be a campaign of improvement as they bid to end Celtic’s reign at the top of the table.

The Light Blues are in a difficult position with the Romania international this summer.

ByDan Emery Aug 20, 2024 Cyriel Dessers was close to Rangers exit

Rangers have been very busy over the course of this summer, with plenty of players arriving at the club and plenty of them leaving. The Scottish side have brought in several new players, whom Clement will hope can improve their chances of success this season.

It is likely that Clement and Rangers will be looking to improve the squad more rather than weaken it, but it has now been revealed that forward Cyriel Dessers has come close to leaving the Scottish side in this transfer window.

Cyriel Dessers

It has been reported by reporter Luca Bendoni that Rangers held talks with MLS side Atlanta United over a deal that would have seen Dessers join the club. Bendoni states that talks were over a deal worth $6 million (£4.6 million) for Dessers.

He claims that an agreement between the American side and Rangers was very close, but the deal eventually fell through, as the 29-year-old didn’t agree on the move to the MLS. The forward only joined the Scottish side last summer, but he made a big impact in his first campaign, as he scored 16 goals in 35 league appearances. He has continued his form in front of goal in this new season, despite his future coming under threat.

But as news about Dessers emerges, Rangers could be about to enter the transfer market once again to improve their attacking options.

Rangers make contact to sign Josip Brekalo

According to Viola News, relayed by Sport Witness, Serie A side Fiorentina have made Josip Brekalo available for transfer, and Rangers have the player on their radar. It is claimed that Brekalo, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Hajduk Split, is “far away” from Fiorentina in terms of their pecking order.

Despite Brekalo having opportunities in pre-season, he isn’t first choice under new manager Raffaele Palladino, and therefore, he is seemingly free to leave the club.

This report states that teams from the UK have made contact for Brekalo, with Rangers said to be one of those teams. It states that negotiations are still far from being completed, which indicates that an offer may not have been made from Rangers for the midfielder just yet. If Rangers are to sign Brekalo, who has scored just one goal in 29 appearances for the Italian club, then he could become a big earner at Ibrox, as the 35-cap Croatia international is said to earn £34,000-a-week already.

Dilhara Lokuhettige gets eight-year ban for corruption

Dilhara Lokuhettige, the former Sri Lanka allrounder, has been banned from all cricket for eight years by the ICC anti-corruption tribunal after being found guilty of breaching the ICC’s anti-corruption code on three counts.Lokuhettige had been slapped with corruption charges in April 2019, five months after the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) had also charged him. The charges relate to the 2017 T10 tournament played in the UAE, which is why the ECB had been first to lay charges.Related

In January this year, the tribunal found Lokuhettige guilty of: Article 2.1.1 – for being party to an agreement or effort to fix or contrive or otherwise influence improperly the result, progress, conduct or other aspect(s) of a match. Article 2.1.4 – directly or indirectly soliciting, inducing, enticing, instructing, persuading, encouraging or intentionally facilitating any participant to breach code article 2.1. Article 2.4.4 – failing to disclose to the ACU full details of any approaches or invitations received to engage in corrupt conduct under the code.”Having represented Sri Lanka in international cricket, Dilhara had attended a number of anti-corruption education sessions and would have known his actions were a breach of the Code,” Alex Marshall, the ICC general manager – anti corruption, said. “The severity of the sanction reflects the seriousness of his offences and his continued refusal to cooperate and should serve as a deterrent for anyone considering getting involved in corruption of any kind.”An Al Jazeera documentary on cricket corruption in Sri Lanka had initially raised concerns about Lokuhettige. In that, Lokuhettige was seen to be in the room when another former Sri Lanka cricketer was talking to an alleged corruptor, as well as an Al Jazeera journalist posing as a prospective bettor.Former Sri Lanka seamer Nuwan Zoysa was also found guilty of three corruption-related offences to do with that T10 tournament in November last year. Zoysa has since denied any wrongdoing.Zoysa and Lokuhettige are the third and fourth former Sri Lanka players to be charged with corruption. Sanath Jayasuriya was the most high-profile cricketer to cop charges, and has served out a two-year suspension from the game, while former offspinner and sometime Galle curator Jayananda Warnaweera was the first to be charged with corruption by the ICC.As Lokuhettige has been living in Australia and held no positions with Sri Lankan cricket, he has not faced a sanctions from the SLC so far.He played 11 white-ball internationals for Sri Lanka, picking up eight wickets to go with 101 runs with the bat. His last competitive game was a first-class fixture for Moors Sports Club in February 2016.

Chris Morris: 'Pressure from price tag doesn't affect you on a cricket field'

“I haven’t even looked that far,” Morris said when asked about playing for South Africa in the future

Chris Morris – ‘Stokes and I could be an interesting duo to come up against’

Chris Morris had played all of one international – a T20I against New Zealand in Durban – when he earned his maiden IPL deal in 2013, with the Chennai Super Kings shelling out US$ 625,000 for him. Eight years later, Morris’ South Africa future is uncertain, but he continues to be a sought-after player in the IPL.In the most recent auction, he became the most expensive player ever in the IPL, with the Rajasthan Royals outbidding the Royal Challengers Bangalore to sign him for INR 16.25 crore (USD 2.2 million approx.).Morris recalled the fierce bidding war for him at the auction earlier in February, saying his “breath was taken away”.Related

“Look, I’ll be the first person to say that my breath was taken away,” Morris said during a virtual-media interaction on Tuesday. “I didn’t expect to first of all be bought for that much and second of all for so many teams to want to employ my services. It’s definitely a humbling feeling…and like I said it took my breath away for that to happen and for teams to keep going for me like that blew my mind.”Between the end of IPL 2020, when Morris was injured, and the IPL 2021 auction, Morris hadn’t played a single competitive game, but the Royals still broke the bank for his big hitting and death bowling. Those dual skills have made him a T20 globetrotter – he has had stints in the BBL, IPL, and T20 Blast in England. This will be Morris’ eighth IPL season and he will return to the Royals, a franchise he represented in 2015, when they made the playoffs. Morris, now 33, said that initially he didn’t see himself playing as many seasons in the league.”I never in my wildest dreams thought I’ll be in my ninth IPL or eighth – math has never been my strong suit – but I never thought I’ll be playing this many IPLs,” he said. “For me to still be needed for my services and be valued is very cool and humbled. We need to put the performances in; it’s as simple as that. When you do contribute to the team and have a bit of fun…amazing things happen when you have fun on the cricket field.”Morris also looked back at the IPL as a “life-changing” event, cherishing the experience of playing with and against top international players in the world.”You want to use the word life-changing, but every single time you come to the IPL, your life changes whether it’s personal or cricket or anything else,” he said. “It’s a life-changing experience to be part of the IPL. It’s been an absolute blast of a journey so far and hopefully there’s a new story to be written over the next nine weeks.”Morris, though, refused to view the IPL as a dry run for the 2021 T20 World Cup, which will also be held in India, insisting that his focus is entirely on performing for the Royals.”Whether there’s a World Cup or not, it’s going to be a very important [IPL] season all the way,” he said. “Like I said, World Cup or no World Cup, [I] still want to win the IPL doesn’t matter what’s coming up after. Your main focus is to win the IPL – the second-biggest trophy, if not the biggest trophy to win in a year without the World Cup. It’s the biggest trophy to win as a cricketer playing domestic cricket. The whole world is watching you, the eyes are on you. It’s the one. It’s the big one to win as a player especially when you’re playing in it for a quite a number of years. You don’t want to use the word tick the box, but definitely something you want to do to have an opportunity to win the IPL.

“Fortunately enough, in the past I have come in [to the tournament] with quite a big price tag on my head, so at the end of the day, you got to perform on the field, no matter what your price tag is.”Chris Morris

“Other guys will hopefully be focusing on the World Cup and that takes their focus away from the IPL and we can jump onto that. Personally, I’m not worried about the World Cup, I’m here to do the job to win matches and hopefully push for winning the trophy in the IPL.”Earlier this year, when asked about his South Africa future, Morris didn’t provide a firm answer. This time as well, he maintained his stance on the matter, having last played international cricket in the 2019 50-over World Cup.”I haven’t even looked that far,” Morris said. “I’ve just focused on playing for Rajasthan Royals – that’s my immediate focus and port of call right now. We will cross that bridge if we get there – if it ever arrives – but no focus on that and all my focus is here.”Playing for the Royals will invite price-tag pressure – and there will be greater pressure if the injured Jofra Archer is sidelined from the entire tournament – but Morris wasn’t too fussed about it, having dealt with it in the past.”It’s natural to have a little bit of added pressure when something like that has happened [at the auction],” he said. I would be lying if I said there wasn’t any pressure. But, fortunately enough, in the past I have come in [to the tournament] with quite a big price tag on my head, so at the end of the day, you got to perform on the field, no matter what your price tag is. So, there is a little bit of added pressure, but the pressure that you get from a price tag doesn’t affect you on a cricket field at the end of the day.”Morris disagrees with Steyn about too much money talk in IPL
During his PSL stint with the Quetta Gladiators, Dale Steyn, speaking to , reckoned that the IPL was less rewarding than some of the other T20 leagues, with more “emphasis on the amount of money”. Morris, however, disagreed with his former team-mate at South Africa and the Royal Challengers.”No, I don’t feel the same (laughs). Dale’s a free spirit, Dale’s one of the legends of the game, Dale’s one of my favourite people in the world,” Morris said. “Dale’s got his opinions, he will be outspoken about his opinions, but that’s Dale’s character.”I’m not going to delve into it too much and it was just the case of Dale feeling at that time what Dale was feeling – what he was feeling emotionally or physically or mentally. Whatever he feels that’s what he feels, and I’m happy to have a conversation with him about it. But, we’re all different animals, we’re all different people and we have different opinions and that’s what makes the world go around.”

Perfect for Palmer: Chelsea ‘would love’ to sign world-class £49m talent

It is fair to say that Chelsea have not been afraid to splash the cash on signings since Todd Boehly arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2022.

They have spent over £100m on two separate players since the American's takeover, with Enzo Fernandez bought for a reported fee of £106.8m and Moises Caicedo snapped up from Brighton & Hove Albion for a fee of £115m.

The Blues have also invested a lot of money into signing talented young players who could either go on to make the club money in the future or develop into first-team options for Enzo Maresca to call upon.

Romeo Lavia, Angelo, Deivid Washington, Andrey Santos, and Cesare Casadei are just a few of the starlets signed by the club over the last few transfer windows.

However, the club are also targeting a move for one young prospect who would be more than capable of securing an immediate place in Maresca’s first team should he arrive at Stamford Bridge this summer.

Chelsea still interested in £42m attacking ace this summer

According to The Athletic, Chelsea could be set to revive their interest in Atheltic Bilbao winger Nico Williams after his stellar Euro 2024 campaign.

The Spaniard registered two goals and one assist in his six outings, including the opening goal in the 2-1 victory over England on Sunday evening.

La Liga outfit Barcelona have looked the most likely destination for the 22-year-old in recent weeks, but the report states that the Blues would 'love' to secure his services, with the groundwork in place over a move to bring him to Stamford Bridge ahead of the 2024/25 season.

It has previously been reported that Williams currently has a €58m (£49m) release clause in his current deal with Bilbao, a bargain given his form at the recent tournament, which could allow the club one talent to reach the next level despite his sensational opening season in West London.

Why Williams would be perfect for Cole Palmer

22-year-old Cole Palmer enjoyed his best campaign to date in 2023/24 contributing with 33 goals and assists, the most of any player in the Premier League.

The former Manchester City talent created 72 chances and completed 52 dribbles at a success rate of 53%, contributing to his excellent tally of goals and assists.

However, Williams's potential arrival could allow the Englishman to build on his excellent cameo appearances for England at Euro 2024, in which he registered one assist and scored once, with both goal contributions coming in either the semi-final or final.

When delving into his stats from the previous campaign, the “world-class” Spaniard, as dubbed by journalist Zach Lowy, has produced some sensational figures that would allow Maresca to secure a talent just as impressive as Palmer on the opposite flank.

Williams undoubtedly enjoyed his best season to date in 2023/24, with his all-round play impressing, completing 143 progressive carries (5.70 per 90) and 86 take-ons (3.43 per 90), allowing Palmer to be presented with more opportunities in the final third.

He also managed a total of 66 progressive passes, massively helping the 22-year-old to achieve a total of 11 assists in La Liga, with only Villarreal's Alex Baena achieving more last season.

Whilst he would be a costly addition, the Spain international would improve the Blues’ forward line tenfold, allowing Maresca to have a fighting chance of edging the club closer to a return to Champions League football.

He has the ability and potential to be a regular starter at Stamford Bridge for many years to come, with the club desperately needing to continue the pattern of signing youngsters who have the potential to develop into world-class talents.

The Midlands side announced a near-£120 million loss for the 2022/2023 season in their latest set of financial accounts, and have worked to balance the books by selling star midfielder Douglas Luiz, young homegrown ace Tim Iroegbunam and the out-of-favour Morgan Sanson for a total of around £54 million (Transfermarkt).

Luiz joined Juventus for £42 million, with Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea moving in the opposite direction at a rate of £19 million – gifting Villa boss Unai Emery with two fresh faces whilst allowing the club to make a £23 million profit off the deal (The Athletic).

Iroegbunam joined Everton in a £9 million move, while Sanson headed back to his homeland with Nice for around £3 million. This has allowed Villa to register a net spend of just £17 million, with the signings of Iling-Junior, Barrenechea, Lewis Dobbin, Ross Barkley and Ian Maatsen setting the club back £72 million.

While reports have suggested that Villa are still expected to make further summer sales, and may have to raise around £100 million, NSWE and Monchi have navigated this window in smart fashion as they attempt back Emery.

After winning the Premier League race for fourth last season, Villa will be playing Champions League football for the first time since the 1980s, so Emery will need both quality and strength in depth.

Unai Emery

Leeds United star Crysencio Summerville, who could be on the move due to the Yorkshire side's own need to sell players, is apparently of interest. Aston Villa have been targeting Summerville as an option to add more attacking impetus, according to some reports, coming after a campaign where he racked up 21 goals in all competitions under Daniel Farke.

Aston Villa tempted to bid for Summerville as Leeds set asking price

According to Football Insider, that interest hasn't waned, and Emery's men are in among the growing number of suitors for Leeds' star forward. Aston Villa could be tempted to bid for Summerville as Leeds set a £40 million asking price, with Liverpool, Brighton and Crystal Palace also eyeing up a swoop for the Dutchman.

Further abroad, Summerville has a prestigious suitor in Ligue 1 champions PSG, who are looking to replace Kylian Mbappe after the France superstar's move to Real Madrid, and are in pole position for the Leeds star.

While the 22-year-old does not actually have an official release clause in his deal, as per FI, it is believed £40m will be enough to prise him away from the Championship.
