Rutherford powers Essex towards QF

Hamish Rutherford powered Essex towards the knockout stages of the Friends Life t20 with 84 from 43 balls as they eased to a seven-wicket win over Sussex at Hove.

21-Jul-2013
ScorecardNew Zealander Hamish Rutherford blitzed the chase•AFPHamish Rutherford powered Essex towards the knockout stages of the Friends Life t20 with 84 from 43 balls as they eased to a seven-wicket win over Sussex at Hove.Rutherford’s competition best helped his side make light work of a target of 147, as Essex won with 17 balls to spare to move above Middlesex into second place in the South Group following their fifth victory.Rutherford was brutal on the offside, where he hit four of his five sixes. He also struck nine fours, showing no mercy on any of the seven bowlers Sussex employed before he was stumped to give leg spinner Will Beer his second wicket in the 14th over when Essex were only 13 runs short of their target.Rutherford and opening partner Greg Smith were more than halfway to their target after the six-over Powerplay when they were 78 without loss. Smith fell for 42 in the 12th over, smartly stumped by debutant Callum Jackson but it was a rare moment of relief for Sussex, the pre-tournament favourites who have won just one of their eight matches.Sussex had earlier made 146 for 8 after winning the toss, a score that never looked like being enough on a good pitch with a lightning-fast outfield. Their batting was a reflection of their tournament so far, with several batsmen getting starts but none able to play the commanding innings required.Accurate seam bowling restricted Sussex to 40 runs from the six-over Powerplay and when they tried to accelerate, their progress was checked by the regular loss of key wickets.Dwayne Smith, who has failed to recapture the form that was instrumental when Sussex won the tournament in 2009, made 25 before he holed out to deep midwicket and David Masters struck again in the 13th over as Rory Hamilton-Brown was strangled down the leg side.Essex’s most impressive bowler was Reece Topley. Having just been hit out of the ground by Scott Styris for six off the previous ball, he switched to bowling round the wicket and had the same batsman held on the boundary off the next delivery. He later returned to take three wickets in the final over to finish with 4 for 26.Skipper Chris Nash also looked capable of providing some acceleration at the end of the innings until he was caught off a top edged-pull to give the otherwise wayward Shaun Tait his only wicket.

Roy ruled out of T20 World Cup; Vince named replacement

Scans on Sunday confirmed he would be unable to recover for the knockout stages

Matt Roller08-Nov-2021Jason Roy has been ruled out of the rest of England’s T20 World Cup campaign with a torn left calf. He has been replaced in the squad by James Vince, who was one of two remaining travelling reserves along with Liam Dawson, and approved by the ICC’s Event Technical Committee.Roy suffered the injury during England’s defeat in their final Super 12s game against South Africa, first holding the muscle while fielding before pulling up lame while running a single in the fifth over of their chase. He retired hurt on 20 off 15 balls and limped off the field with support from a physio and Tom Curran, one of England’s substitute fielders.Scans on Sunday confirmed the tear and it became clear that he would be unable to recover in time to play a part in the knockout stages.”I’m gutted to be ruled out of the World Cup,” Roy said. “It is a bitter pill to swallow. I will be staying on to support the boys and hopefully we can go all the way and lift that trophy. It has been an unbelievable journey so far and we have to continue expressing ourselves and concentrating on us.”The rehab has already started and even though I’ve torn my calf, I’m going to give myself the best chance of being ready for the T20 tour of the Caribbean at the start of next year.”England could replace Roy with Vince in a like-for-like swap but appear more likely to bring Sam Billings – an unused squad member – into their middle order, promoting either Jonny Bairstow or Dawid Malan to open. They will also consider bringing in a seam-bowling allrounder as Roy’s replacement – either David Willey or Tom Curran – to bat at No. 7 or 8.Roy’s loss will be hard felt by a side already missing four first-choice squad members through injury or unavailability in Ben Stokes, Sam Curran, Jofra Archer and Tymal Mills. Eoin Morgan, England’s captain, said after the game against South Africa that Roy was “unbelievably important” to the squad.”He’s a guy who epitomises everything that we are about in the changing room and the way we play,” Morgan said. “You see how commanding he is at the top of the order… he’s as close as we get to surmising how the changing room should play. We’re gutted for Jase but also half-hoping that he’s OK. For anyone to miss the latter stages of a tournament – particularly when it’s been too guys in two games – that does hurt the mood [in the dressing room].”You got through the names that either aren’t here through injury or other reasons: Archer, Stokes, Sam Curran, Tymal… You look back at the times that you’ve really explored and tried to build a squad, and I’m sitting here thankful that we have done that because we’re going to need those guys in the next game and possibly in the final.”Roy was the Player of the Match in England’s last men’s T20 World Cup semi-final, hitting 78 off 44 balls against New Zealand in 2016 to set up a convincing seven-wicket win, and his return from injury in the 50-over World Cup in 2019 was a major factor in their qualification for the knockout stages.

Railways collapse after solid start

ScorecardSourav Sarkar took three wickets to halt Railways’ progress•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Railways began the round with an outside chance of qualifying for the next round, made a good start, but collapsed after that. Asked to bat first by hosts Bengal, openers Amit Paunikar and Shivakant Shukla added 85 for the first wicket, at a fair clip, but once Sourav Sarkar dismissed Paunikar for 50, Railways couldn’t arrest the slide.Railways lost six wickets for 40 runs, the last one of those to Shib Paul, the injury-prone fast bowler who was playing his first first-class match in four-and-a-half years. Murali Kartik and Karan Sharma then added 68 for the seventh wicket, but Railways lost three more in one go. Kartik, who scored 48, was the last man to fall to what turned out to be the last ball of the day.
ScorecardIn the contest to avoid relegation, Rajasthan, the defending champions, made decent progress after being put in by Hyderabad. Rajasthan may have lost five wickets, but the smallest partnership they had was 40. The end of that partnership reduced Rajasthan to 82 for 2, but the reliable Vineet Saxena scored 84 to set them on their way.Ashok Menaria capitalised on the start with a quick 63, and while Saxena fell short of a century, captain Hrishikesh Kanitkar, playing his 100th Ranji Trophy match, added 42 before being bowled to the last ball of the day. The team that emerges the better side from this match will avoid relegation.
ScorecardZaheer Khan had a fruitful first day as captain of a first-class side, as Mumbai bowled out Gujarat for 244 in what is a virtual pre-quarter-final. Had hosts Mumbai not lost opener Kaustubh Pawar in the last over of the day, the smile on Zaheer’s face at stumps would have been even wider.Click here for the full report.
ScorecardGoing by day one, the Rajkot pitch confounded both sides, who were expecting it to turn early, and turn big. In the end, the innate slow nature of the pitch didn’t allow that. The lack of watering and rolling of the pitch over the last two days, in the presence of a BCCI curator, somehow added variable, largely low, bounce to the mix. Slow and mostly low made batting difficult for Saurashtra, who conceded whatever advantage winning the toss had given them by losing nine wickets.Click here for the full report.

Bowlers give Joyce fast start

Sussex’s bowlers combined to dismiss Worcestershire for 162 as Ed Joyce’s captaincy began on a positive note

Ed Joyce is too experienced a cricketer to imagine that all his days as captain of Sussex will be as pleasurable as this. For a start, he won the toss. Then he made the quite obvious decision to field, for the weather was overcast and the springy pitch likely to give assistance to anyone running down the slope. He could have plucked John Snow out of retirement and wickets would still have fallen. As it was, in two sessions following rain in the morning, Worcestershire were dismissed for 162. There was more bounce than movement for James Anyon and Steve Magoffin, although there was that, too, and, to the delight of everyone connected with Sussex, Mike Yardy held two excellent catches at second slip the day after relinquishing the captaincy. Evidently he is well relieved to be rid of a task that had become little more than a chore. No Worcestershire batsman coped with the steepling bounce that Anyon and Amjad Khan, in particular, were able to obtain after play started at 2.15pm. Magoffin, whether through his choice or that of his captain’s, bowled up the hill and soon struck: Phillip Hughes was held well, to his left, by Yardy. Then Vikram Solanki, Surrey-bound but still a prominent Worcestershire cricketer, was bowled through being a trifle late in his defensive push.Daryl Mitchell, with eight runs to his name in 21 overs but at least managing to stay in, edged Khan to the new captain at third slip, James Cameron’s off stump was knocked back by Anyon and Matt Pardoe was sharply held by Yardy, also off Anyon. Moeen Ali, the one batsman to make a reasonable score, pulled Magoffin straight to a fielder just in front of square. Only the No. 9, Richard Jones, played an innings of sorts after that.It was not the greatest display of batsmanship but an ideal start for Joyce in what was the first Championship match Sussex have staged at Hove since the end of May. This was a quicker pitch, too, than was generally the case here last year, no doubt prepared with Anyon’s sharpness in mind. Yardy undertook the captaincy for almost four years, giving it up with the blessing of Mark Robinson, the Sussex cricket manager.”It takes a lot of time and attention. Every day you are absorbed by it and live by it. The pressure takes its toll,” Robinson said. “Michael wants to concentrate on his own game.””You have different types of vice-captain. You may have a young person you are grooming for the future or someone who can step in when needed and that is what we have with Ed. It gives him an opportunity to expand his captaincy skills in the same way that Michael had when he took over from Chris Adams.”Robinson added that Yardy’s decision had nothing to do with his well-documented battle with depression.Joyce had to bat in the seven overs Sussex were left to face under the floodlights, which were turned on not long before the close, but his day was undimmed. There was no deployment of a nightwatchman. He and Chris Nash, with runs aplenty behind him in his last match, also had their difficulties against the moving ball, yet survived.
