Spinners, Harmanpreet seal comfortable win for India in rain-hit match

Harmanpreet Kaur and India’s spinners combined to hand the visitors a comfortable 56-run win against Bangladesh in the rain-hit fourth T20I. India’s dominance continued in Sylhet as they went 4-0 ahead in the five-match series.Harmanpreet, playing her 300th international game, top-scored with a brisk 39 to lift the visitors to a competitive 122 for 6 in 14 overs after being asked to bat on a cloudy day. Chasing a revised DLS target of 125, Bangladesh lost a flurry of wickets to post 66 for 7. S Asha – India’s oldest debutant in women’s T20Is at 33 – and Deepti Sharma starred with two wickets each.Bangladesh made three changes from the XI that played the third game, but were never in the chase on a sluggish surface. After Deepti handed the first breakthrough for India with the wicket of Murshida Khatun in the fourth over, she went on to dismiss Dilhara Akter (21 off 25). Rubya Haider (13 off 17) was also run out after a mix-up with captain Nigar Sultana in the eighth over.Asha’s maiden wicket was the prized scalp of Sultana, who couldn’t read a googly on the stumps and ended up being trapped lbw. The legspinner added one more wicket when she dismissed Shorna Akter, having the batter mistime a slog-sweep only to be caught by Richa Ghosh off a leading edge. Asha finished her quota of three overs with figures of 2 for 18.Bangladesh’s batting collapse continued to haunt them in the series as they slid from 38 for 1 to 47 for 6 to lose the plot and the game.India lost Shafali Verma early for a four-ball 2 in the second over. D Hemalatha played a cameo of 22 off 14, hitting two fours and as many sixes, which included two powerful lofted drives over extra cover. However, her stay was cut short by the young fast bowler Marufa Akther who trapped her lbw with an inswinger. India reached 48 for 2 in 5.5 overs before rain halted the game for an hour.Once the play resumed, Smriti Mandhana got going to make an 18-ball 22 but was bowled by Rabeya Khan. But India did not slow down, thanks to Harmanpreet and Richa Ghosh. The duo put on 44 runs off just 28 balls for the fourth wicket. Harmanpreet picked up pace after Mandhana’s dismissal as she went from 10 off 8 to 39 off 26 balls, hitting five fours. Ghosh played a 15-ball 24 and hit three fours and a six as India accumulated 52 runs in the last five overs. Though several shots were coming off edges, India scored quickly to put up a solid target in 14 overs.India will be eying a series sweep when they take on the field for the final game on May 9.

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Dec-2023Saika Ishaque, Shreyanka Patil, Mannat Kashyap and Titas Sadhu have received their maiden ODI call-ups for the Australia series starting December 28 in Mumbai. Batting collapses 'a bit of a concern' for Sri Lanka

“We were planning how we can get to 240 or 250 and back our bowling to defend it,” says batting coach Naveed Nawaz

Andrew Fidel Fernando01-Jul-2023Yes, okay, Sri Lanka’s batting is pretty poor by big-boy-ODI standards. We have heard the arguments. The dot-ball percentages aren’t great. The top order gets out too early too often. And 300-plus scores just aren’t their thing against good bowling. In the World Cup Qualifier, though, their bowlers have kept proving themselves. Wanindu Hasaranga has rocked it. Lahiru Kumara was good (until he got injured). And Maheesh Theekshana may be the most consistent bowler Sri Lanka have.Together, they’ve refused to allow an opposition to score 200.On Friday, it’s like DJ Khaled says: Another One.Netherlands were chasing 214; they were all out for 192.”Throughout the tournament we have managed to keep every side under 200 so far,” this is Sri Lanka batting coach Naveed Nawaz extolling his team’s bowlers, because what else can he do when he has been sent to a press conference in a match in which the batters have kinda tanked.”The bowling has been good since the start of the tournament,” Nawaz said. “When things went bad at the top end, we were planning how we can get to 240 or 250 and back our bowling to defend it. Looking at the start from where we were, 213 is a good score. We would always back our bowling to defend it.”Would he ? I guess we have to take his word for it. In the last two matches, and perhaps in general over the past couple of years, the bowlers have bailed the batting out.Nawaz thinks it might happen more often in this tournament from now, especially in Bulawayo.”The square looks a bit tired now as well, and wickets are going to get slower,” he said. “The side that adapts well to the conditions and holds their nerve will have a better chance of coming out well at the end.”But Sri Lanka are not beyond admitting there are problems. In the last match they were dismissed for 245 against Scotland. Even though the surfaces were sluggish, neither seemed like an imposing total.”It’s a bit of a concern that twice in a few days our batting has collapsed,” Nawaz said. “Once [we collapsed] at the top, and once in the middle. We’ll have to regroup. We’ll have to sit down, talk about it and see how we’re going to come back in the next game.”Sri Lanka’s spinners have frequently been lead actors in the bailout crew. In this tournament, Hasaranga is by a distance the highest wicket-taker so far, with 20 dismissals to his name at an average of 10.55. In this match, he took 2 for 53.Theekshana helped to turn the match too. He took 3 for 31, and has nine wickets at 18.55 in the tournament.”The two of them have been bearing a lot of responsibility in our team,” Nawaz said of Hasaranga and Theekshana. “They’ve borne it well through the course of this tournament so far.”

Late strikes boost NZ as Pakistan chase 319 on final day

A 120-run stand between Blundell and Bracewell lifts New Zealand to 277, before Pakistan lose two wickets by stumps

Stumps Some enterprising batting after tea, a late declaration from Tim Southee, and two Pakistan wickets in the final ten minutes of the fourth day gave New Zealand a massive advantage going into day five.On the last day of the deadlocked Test series, New Zealand will need eight wickets to win while Pakistan need to either score 319 – a record target on Pakistan grounds – or survive a maximum of 90 overs.New Zealand won two of the three sessions, starting off by dismissing Pakistan’s overnight No. 11 inside the first over to take a 41-run lead. After that, Tom Latham (62), Kane Williamson (41), Tom Blundell (74) and Michael Bracewell (74*) made useful batting contributions to take their innings forward. The way Blundell and Bracewell batted in the third session would’ve deflated Pakistan, however. Pakistan took three top-order wickets in quick succession after lunch to dream of possibly chasing a lower target, but the Blundell-Bracewell duo put on 120 for the fifth wicket. That helped New Zealand eventually declare on 277 for 5 and set a target of 319.Then, Pakistan, left with three overs to bat before stumps, lived their worst-case scenario. Abdullah Shafique was bowled by Southee for a duck and Mir Hamza also went for zero courtesy an Ish Sodhi ripper. Pakistan ended the day at 0 for 2.The day had also begun for Pakistan poorly, lasting only one over with the bat on the fourth morning to be bowled for 408 and conceding a 41-run deficit. Even though Hamza dismissed Devon Conway with a first-ball duck, Latham and Williamson used their sweeps, and the latter his shots straight back, to put on a partnership of 109.Latham and Williamson then looked to extend New Zealand’s lead, but both were dismissed in a frenetic period of play. Latham, on 57, was caught on the back foot off Abrar Ahmed around the stumps, but survived an lbw dismissal since Pakistan, with only one review in hand, did not go up after umpire Alex Wharf turned it down. That decision from Babar Azam did not hurt Pakistan, though, since Latham was out for 62 next over trying to flick Naseem Shah off his hips, only to hit it to the left of a diving Abrar at short midwicket. The new batter Nicholls then survived a caught-behind decision from umpire Aleem Dar, but his review changed the decision after no edge was detected.Shan Masood at leg slip can’t hold on to a chance to get Michael Bracewell•AP

Abrar, now high on confidence after the Latham catch, then trapped Williamson going for the sweep. Williamson went up to review, and was deemed out by the faintest of margins with the ball clipping the outside half of leg stump. Blundell then was given out lbw by Wharf first ball courtesy an Abrar googly, but his review saved him, with a spike coming up on replay.Blundell made the most of that chance, and a dropped catch by the wicketkeeper and Agha Salman at first slip, to motor along to his ninth half-century. It was a forgettable day for Sarfaraz, who dropped a total of three chances.Bracewell, meanwhile, made a streaky start, genuinely struggling against the Abrar googly from around the stumps. But he hung in there and built on the longer the partnership grew in the final session.Bracewell really showed his wares after the 75th over when New Zealand’s lead had touched 270. At the time, he was on 45 in 99 balls, but then smacked Abrar for back-to-back fours to reach his maiden Test fifty. While Blundell fell for 74 trying to slog another boundary, Bracewell remained unbeaten on 74. New Zealand could’ve batted out the day, but with the light dying, they preferred to bowl three overs at Pakistan. That proved to be deadly for the hosts under trying conditions.

Smith and Beaumont combine to help Thunder down unbeaten Scorchers

Lauren Smith took a career-best 5 for 17 while Tammy Beaumont starred with the bat as Sydney Thunder belatedly kick-started their WBBL campaign in style with a surprise win over the unbeaten Perth Scorchers at the WACA.The Scorchers had few answers with the bat, eventually reaching 141 for 9 to fall 25 runs shy of their opponents as the holders slipped to a rare home defeat.Smith helped turn the screws with 3 for 13 from three overs before returning 5 for 17 from her four allotted overs. The Thunder set up a first win of the season in their fourth outing with an imposing 166 for 4 from their 20 overs.Opener Beaumont cast aside a string of low scores to hit an unbeaten 77 off 59 balls for the Thunder’s biggest tally of the season.Thunder star Rachael Haynes looked in good form before her 24-ball innings came to an end on 28.Alana King took the prized wicket of Haynes, but it was an otherwise rare off day for the international legspinner who went for 22 from her two overs.Holly Ferling debuted in Scorchers colours and soon had the scalp of Amy Jones, eventually returning 1 for 25 from three overs. In reply, the home side started strongly with 25 off the first three overs before Sophie Devine was dismissed for 12.And the Scorchers’ hopes took a nosedive as Olivia Porter scooped up a fine sprawling catch to get rid of run machine Beth Mooney. It was a second catch in a matter of minutes for the youngster who earlier chipped in with a handy unbeaten 17 off only six deliveries in just her second outing.Mooney’s dismissal marked the beginning of the end for the high-flying Scorchers who soon slipped to 48 for 5 at the midway point of the innings and facing a near impossible required run-rate they never recovered with Smith running through them.

Lange travels for January talks as Tottenham push to sign "strong" £40m ace

Tottenham Hotspur have been making a serious push to sign a “strong” player “in the past few hours”, with technical director Johan Lange taking a real hands-on role in the potential transfer as he travels abroad for negotiations.

Tottenham set for dramatic late end to January transfer window

Under-fire Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou, as he prepares his side for a crunch Europa League clash at home to Elfsborg this evening, will also be hoping that the Lilywhites hierarchy finally back him with an outfield signing before deadline day on February 3rd.

Tottenham did attempt to sign Randal Kolo Muani from PSG, but the Frenchman ended up joining Juventus on a season-long loan deal instead, prompting the north Londoners to cast their eyes on alternative attacking targets.

Another French forward believed to be high on their agenda, according to various credible reports, is wantaway Bayern Munich starlet Mathys Tel.

Mathys Tel

The teenager waved goodbye to Bayern supporters after their 3-1 win over Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League earlier this week, after making his final decision to leave the Allianz Arena behind-the-scenes (Fabrizio Romano).

Tottenham are reliably believed to be firm contenders for Tel’s signature, with the race for his signature heating up after the 19-year-old opted to quit Vincent Kompany’s side.

The teenager has a glowing reputation, despite failing to establish himself as a firm regular under Kompany with Harry Kane ahead of him in the pecking order.

Tottenham pushing to sign Mathys Tel as Johan Lange travels for talks

Now, according to French newspaper L’Equipe (via Bayern and Germany on X), a very intriguing update has come to light on Spurs’ pursuit of the Bayern gem.

Indeed, it is believed that Tottenham have emerged as the most active club trying to sign the forward “in the past few hours”, with director Lange travelling to Munich and holding talks over signing Tel for Spurs.

The £40 million versatile attacker can play anywhere across the front three -scoring 16 goals and registering seven assists for Bayern in total across 83 appearances – so it is clear to see why Postecoglou could be attracted to Tel as a signing.

“He’s a very young, talented player who can play different positions,” said Julian Nagelsmann.

“He’s very quick, strong with his body. He’s good at defending the ball with his back towards the opponent’s goal. I have the vision that he could score 40 goals [in a season like Robert Lewandowski] one day in the future.”
