Hogan inspires three-day win

ScorecardMichael Hogan was once again to the fore for Glamorgan•PA Photos

Prolific seamer Michael Hogan took four wickets as Glamorgan beat Derbyshire by 106 runs inside three days at Cardiff. It was Glamorgan’s first County Championship victory over Derbyshire in Cardiff for 22 years going back to 1992. And on top of that Derbyshire had won the previous five four-day meetings against the Welsh county. After Glamorgan had been bowled out for 181 it left Derbyshire requiring 261 to win in 176 overs but they were bowled out for 154 in 52.1 overs. Glamorgan took 21 points to Derbyshire’s four.Despite being in a strong position at the start of play at 145 for 5, a lead of 224 runs, Glamorgan lost their last five wickets for 36 in 13.5 overs to be dismissed for 181.Mark Footitt struck with the fifth delivery of the morning, trapping David Lloyd lbw, and nightwatchman Dean Cosker went the same way five overs later.Glamorgan slumped to 172 for 8 as skipper Mark Wallace drove Footitt to Ben Slater at short extra cover. Four runs later Kieran Bull edged Footitt to second slip before Michael Hogan miscued another drive off Tony Palladino to substitute fielder Chesney Hughes.Derbyshire’s openers had 40 minutes to survive before lunch but they lost Ben Slater, who was bowled by Graham Wagg shouldering arms at the start of the fifth over of the innings. After lunch Hogan trapped Godleman leg before and Cheteshwar Pujara lasted only six balls as before chipping straight back to the same bowler. Wes Durston offered some resistance but the introduction of Lloyd’s seamers at the River End brought an end to the fourth-wicket stand as Wayne Madsen went lbw. From 64 for 4 Derbyshire’s slump continued when Alex Hughes was caught down the leg side by Wallace off Lloyd to make the score 68 for 5. Despite Durston’s resilience the wickets continued to fall the other end as Allenby trapped Gareth Cross in front – the 15th lbw decision of the match.Durston completed his half-century from 69 balls before Allenby bowled Wayne White. The key wicket of Durston was claimed by Hogan, who had the allrounder caught behind for 72 from 91 balls, leaving Derbyshire 122 for 8 shortly before tea.Victory came after tea when David Wainwright was caught behind off Hogan and Footitt miscued a drive at Wagg and was caught at mid-off.

Derbyshire win race for Pujara

India’s Test batsman Cheteshwar Pujara will seek further experience of English conditions after a disappointing series against England with a late-season deal with Derbyshire

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Aug-2014Derbyshire have agreed terms with Cheteshwar Pujara that will see the Indian Test batsman further his education in English conditions by playing the last three Championship fixtures of the season. Pujara’s signing remains subject to final approval from the BCCI and successful registration.Pujara has already returned to India after the Test series while awaiting the prospect of a few late-season matches. Derbyshire’s announcement will frustrate Leicestershire, the Second Division’s bottom club, who had been fancied to win his signature.Marcus North, the former Australia batsman, will remain with Derbyshire and play in the List A competition, while Pujara will play in the four remaining four-day first-class games that Derbyshire have this season. Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the club’s overseas player in the first part of the season, has returned to the West Indies for the Test series against Bangladesh.Pujara already has happy memories of the Derby ground. He made 81 against Derbyshire in July during a three-day tour match. He would have little clue of the problems which would follow as he hit 222 runs with a highest score of 55 in a five-Test series taken 3-1 by England.Graeme Welch, Derbyshire’s elite performance director, said: “We’re an ambitious team and have an exciting group of players who are developing fast. Pujara joining us at this stage of the season is a real boost for the lads and the remaining Championship matches we have ahead of us will give him exactly the experience he is looking for.”With Shiv now back in West Indies preparing for Test match action and Marcus North focusing on our one-day campaign, Pujara will bring an added dimension to the side as we look to finish our Championship season strongly.”Derbyshire, in their first season under Welch, have not lived up to ambitions so far, struggling to put together impressive form after their relegation last year.Derbyshire’s chief executive, Simon Storey said: “We’ve been focused on delivering a long-term legacy from the visit of the Indian tourist side to Derby in July, including the creation of our Cricket Derbyshire India Club. We hope the opportunity to see Pujara play county cricket for Derbyshire will inspire cricket followers across the City and the wider county and open up the Club to a new generation of fans.”

Dhoni slams Jadeja's guilty verdict

MS Dhoni, the India captain, has said the guilty verdict against Ravindra Jadeja for his role in the incident involving James Anderson at Trent Bridge was hurtful and negligent

Sidharth Monga at Ageas Bowl26-Jul-2014MS Dhoni, the India captain, has said the guilty verdict against Ravindra Jadeja for his role in the incident involving James Anderson at Trent Bridge was hurtful and negligent. In his verdict, the match referee David Boon had said he was “not comfortably satisfied” that Jadeja’s role amounted to a Level 2 charge, and punished him for a Level 1 offence. The allrounder was found guilty of “conduct contrary to the spirit of the game” and fined 50% of his match fee.For the first time, one side’s account of the incident that occurred as the players were walking off for lunch on day two of the first Test has emerged. “To me, it is a very hurtful decision,” Dhoni, who was witness to the incident, said. “A lot of things were neglected in judging the case. If you see, what exactly happened, the umpires called for lunch and we started walking. I don’t want to take any other individual’s name. We started walking, and the other individual started using foul language against Jadeja. I had to step in the middle. And by the time we reached the ropes I thought the thing has diffused.”By the time we were going through the members’ area I was ahead of Jadeja. Jadeja was a couple of yards behind me. Again something happened. Something was told to him. And he just turned across to the individual, and after that he was pushed. And he barely gained his balance, and he turned to see as to what is happening. And on the basis of that he is fined.MS Dhoni has come out in strong support of his allrounder Ravindra Jadeja•Getty Images

“It was said that it was against the spirit of the game, and everything. What we have to see is, we can’t ignore what has happened. If someone is saying something to you from behind and you just turn and you look, that is not aggressive. Especially the fact that the bat was under his armpit throughout – right from [calling of] lunch till he entered the dressing room. Not one word was spoken by him.”Dhoni insisted Jadeja had not been aggressive in his conduct. “So a lot of things were neglected,” he said. “It’s for you guys to decide the things I am saying and if I have not lied. When it comes to factual matter, Jadeja – whatever he did – was not aggressive. I don’t think there was even a little bit of aggression in that, and that is why I am very hurt by the verdict that has been given.”Dhoni was also unhappy about not being allowed an appeal because the first guilty verdict for a Level 1 offence does not have a provision for an appeal. “That’s the beauty of it,” he said. “Allegation is of Level 2, and Jadeja gets punished under Level 1. The beauty of Level 1 is you cannot appeal against it. But BCCI and legal are working things out. We are definitely not at all happy with the verdict. I have dictated what the facts were.”India had pressed Level 3 charges against Anderson, who will have his hearing on August 1. England’s response was a Level 2 charge against Jadeja. India’s accusation was that Jadeja had been abused and pushed by Anderson; England said Jadeja had turned around and approached Anderson in an aggressive manner.

Sammy pulls off West Indies' best chase

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details3:38

Cullinan: Australia’s pace attack not strong enough

West Indian batting power ejected Australia from the previous World T20 in Sri Lanka and has all but done so again after Darren Sammy pulled off a remarkable heist in Mirpur. Chris Gayle gave West Indies a blazing start to their chase of 179 but they spluttered in the middle and Australia were firm favourites when George Bailey handed the ball to Mitchell Starc with 31 still needed from the final two overs.Sammy had other ideas. A half-volley was smashed over long-on for six, a flick was finessed to the fine-leg boundary and another four was slashed behind point, and Starc’s inability to land the ball in the right spots meant 19 runs had leaked from his over, leaving 12 required off the final six balls. Importantly, Sammy was on strike, though his partner Dwayne Bravo had contributed plenty to the chase with 27 off 12 deliveries.

Smart Stats

  • This was West Indies’ highest successful chase in T20Is, beating the 170 they chased against the same opposition at the Oval in the 2009 World T20.

  • Samuel Badree went for 37 runs off his four overs – his most expensive figures in T20Is. His previous worst was against New Zealand in 2012, when he gave away 33 runs without a wicket from his full quota.

  • Mitchell Starc went for 50 runs off his four overs, which are the most he has conceded in any T20I and 15 runs more than his previous worst. His last over went for 19 runs, which equalled the most runs he has been hit for in an over in T20Is. He had gone for 19 runs against South Africa in a rain-curtailed match in Durban earlier this year.

  • Darren Sammy’s 13-ball 34 was the fastest 30-plus innings in a T20 against Australia. It was also his second-fastest innings of 30 or more in a T20Is.

  • Chris Gayle’s 53 was his eighth fifty-plus in the World T20 – the most any batsman has hit in the tournament. Gayle has scored 299 runs at 42.71 against Australia – the most he has scored against any team. His four fifties against them are also the most he has got against any opposition.

Two yorkers from James Faulkner gave Bailey reason to breathe easier, but Sammy followed those with a six crunched over long-off from a full toss and another six down the ground to secure the six-wicket win with two balls to spare. Sammy threw his arms up in the air to celebrate and well he might have, for his 34 off 13 balls was the reason West Indies managed the highest successful chase in their T20 international history.Australia were shattered by the loss, which left them winless from their first two games. Even victories in their remaining matches against India and Bangladesh may well be inadequate to progress to the semi-finals. It has been a harsh lesson for a side who entered the tournament as favourites with five wins from their past five games – notably, all in faster, more familiar conditions. Here their batsmen again struggled against spin. Not that their total of 178 for 8 was unable to be defended; on the contrary, they must have felt confident at the change of innings, even more so after Shane Watson sent down a maiden for the first over of the chase to Dwayne Smith. After that, though, it was the Gayle show. His first ball was a pearler from Starc, angling in and straightening past the outside edge, but that was about the only time Gayle looked troubled.Four fours followed later in that same over and the old Gayle magic was back. He clipped Doug Bollinger over square leg for six and continued to strike the ball cleanly in all directions, taking 40 from his first 14 deliveries. Smith edged behind off Starc for 17 but Gayle was the worry for Australia, and after his brisk start he settled down into a more run-a-ball mode, moving to his half-century from 31 balls. At times he was walking singles, such was the ease with he appeared to be taking things, but on 53 he sent a catch to deep midwicket off James Muirhead and the fate of the match looked as if it may have changed on that one stroke. The runs began to dry up, Lendl Simmons was caught in the deep for 26 and Marlon Samuels used up 15 balls for his 12 before he was brilliantly taken by Brad Haddin diving to his right off Starc. It was the last good thing Starc did for the match – Bravo clubbed him for six later in that over, and then it was the Sammy show. Those two final overs were fatal to Australia in this match, but their lack of big runs from their top three batsmen has also hurt them in both games. As they had in the loss to Pakistan, Australia again relied on Maxwell to rebuild the innings after the top three struggled against quality spin. This time, David Warner and Aaron Finch at least made starts but they fell in consecutive overs while trying to force the pace – Finch was bowled for 16 attempting a slog sweep off Samuels and Samuel Badree’s skidder took middle stump to end Warner’s innings on 20.Watson failed to get going for the second consecutive game, this time stumped for 2 from eight balls when Sunil Narine turned one past the bat. Denesh Ramdin was hardly crisp behind the stumps but such was Watson’s apparent lack of awareness that his back foot was on the line that Ramdin was able to miss the bails on his first attempt at breaking them, then knock them off at the second try and still find Watson short. When Bailey sent a catch to midwicket off Samuels for 12, Australia were in a spot of bother at 77 for 4, and it looked like spin could be their undoing in a tournament played in turning conditions. But Maxwell showed against Pakistan that such bowling does not worry him, and here he followed 16 off a Sammy over with a couple more sixes, slog swept off Samuels and crunched over extra cover off Badree. There was no crazily fast half-century for Maxwell as there had been against Pakistan, but his 45 from 22 – he pulled a catch to deep midwicket off Badree – at least put Australia on the path to a competitive total. Brad Hodge, who entered the match as Twenty20’s leading run scorer of all time, had enough experience to steer the innings up towards the 150 mark, his 35 ending only when he tried to reverse sweep Narine and was bowled. The lower order added a few boundaries to get the total up to 178 for 8 but it was not enough. West Indies now have every chance of advancing to the semi-finals and maybe defending their title, won in Sri Lanka in 2012 after Gayle monstered Australia in the semi-final with 75 off 41 balls. Australia will almost certainly fly home next week wondering how on earth they can win this elusive trophy. Perhaps if Gayle retires before the next tournament they might have some chance.

E ele me atendeu, me escutou bem, sempre.

Tinha muita pegada, muita categoria.

O AMADURECIMENTO DO CRAQUE

India A sweep series after thriller

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAshok Menaria needed only 26 balls to reach his half-century•BCCI

India A completed a clean sweep in the one-dayers over New Zealand A though they faced much stiffer competition in the final game after the visitors put up 290. India A were in trouble during the chase at 79 for 4 before quick half-centuries from Ashok Menaria and Kedar Jadhav, and a calm cameo from Mandeep Singh helped pull off a tight two-wicket win.India have hardly been troubled in the previous two games, as their solid top order set up comfortable chases, but this time a rejigged order didn’t provide a strong start. Unmukt Chand, who hit half-centuries in both previous matches, and Sanju Samson fell attempting the ramp shot, before Robin Uthappa and Sachin Baby were dismissed in the space of four deliveries. The required rate was touching seven at that stage, before the spinners allowed India back into the chase. Menaria clubbed three sixes and a four off a wayward over from legspinner Todd Astle and Jadhav hit two sixes and two fours off the other legspinner Ish Sodhi as 66 runs came in six overs. Menaria needed only 26 balls for his fifty, while Jadhav was a bit more watchful, taking 53 deliveries. At 207 for 4 after 37 overs, India were in control of the chase. Scott Kuggeleijn, though, put New Zealand ahead with a double-wicket maiden, removing both the set batsmen. It was left to Mandeep, batting at an unfamiliar No. 7 position, to ensure the clean sweep, helped by crucial contributions from Jalaj Saxena and Rahul Sharma. Things were so tense that words were exchanged between Rahul and Mark Gillespie after the pair collided when the former took off for a run. With three overs to go, and only three wickets remaining, India still needed 25, but Kuggeleijn undid his earlier good work by leaking 18 off the over. “My aim was to bat till the end,” Mandeep said after finishing unbeaten on 37. “One good over could change the whole scenario, I was waiting for that over.”India were made to work so hard for the win due to a solid effort from New Zealand’s batsmen. Luke Ronchi got a duck, but Carl Cachopa was the only other batsman in the top five to miss out on a half-century. Anton Devcich completed a successful tour by top scoring with 66, while the youngsters Corey Anderson and Tom Latham also helped themselves to fifties. It still wasn’t enough to prevent a second-string India A team from winning 3-0.
