'If 300 was easy, you would have seen one every month' – Tamim

With a Test comeback imminent, the opener dug deep to bring up Bangladesh’s highest ever first-class score

Tamim Iqbal whacks it over the top•Raton Gomes/BCB

When Tamim Iqbal reached 298 while batting for East Zone against Central Zone in the Bangladesh Cricket League, a meeting inside the BCB headquarters broke up. Those attending climbed out of the window, and waited in the balcony overlooking the Shere Bangla National Stadium’s grandstand. In attendance were BCB’s chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury, cricket operations chairman Akram Khan and chief selector Minhajul Abedin.Tamim’s innings breakdown

Day 2 lunch: Tamim on 72*
Day 2 tea: 157* (85 runs in the session)
Day 2 stumps: 222* (65 runs in the session)
Day 3 lunch: 279* (57 runs in the session)
Day 3 declaration: 334* (55 runs in the session)

As soon as Tamim scampered to take the single, the loudest cheer came from these three men, as well as from inside their meeting room where Bangladesh coach Russell Domingo and Habibul Bashar, selector and former captain, stood to give him an ovation. At the end of the third day’s play, Chowdhury and other board officials greeted Tamim and cut a cake with him to celebrate the left-hander becoming the holder of the country’s highest individual score, an unbeaten 334 that had 42 fours and three sixes, spanning a gargantuan nine hours and 45 minutes. Tamim’s triple hundred was only the second by a Bangladeshi, after Raqibul Hasan’s 313, nearly thirteen years ago.Raqibul, who played nine Tests between 2008 and 2011, coincidentally was in the opposition when Tamim was batting in this game. Later, he was specially called to cut the cake with Tamim as one of the two triple centurions in Bangladesh’s first-class scene, apart from Tamim’s East Zone teammates and BCB officials.Tamim said that the nine-hour essay will remain an innings that is close to his heart.”It is a special feeling to score a triple hundred,” Tamim said. “I think everyone dreams of such an innings but I didn’t think it would come in this game. The most important thing for me was how I batted. I hope I can continue with the same form. It is a special innings; three hundred runs is tough against any opposition or at any level. If it was easy, you would have seen a 300 every month. It will have a special place in my heart.”What stood out in Tamim’s knock was his perseverance while playing a low-key domestic match. Often in the past he has gotten out after scoring a big hundred, but this time, with the need of getting in the groove ahead of his comeback Test next week in Rawalpindi, Tamim dug deep.”I felt that I was very determined. The wicket was playing well. It wasn’t spinning or doing that much. I kept it simple. After completing the triple-hundred, I took some chances. Otherwise, I kept on playing cricketing shots. I was looking for boundary options, rather than sixes.”When I touched 280 was the first time I started to think about the triple hundred. I felt that if I thought about the milestone for too long, it would change my overall plan which was to bat in a plain and simple manner,” he said.Tamim scored more than fifty runs in each of the sessions since the second day, but he said that as the innings wore on, on the third day, batting became tougher. From being unbeaten on 222 at the start of the third morning, Tamim played patiently to reach 300 after lunch, and only then did he open up to attack the Central Zone bowlers.”Compared to the second day, the wicket was tougher on day three. I had to settle on singles and doubles, rather than boundaries,” he said. “I was always on the lookout for runs just like a Test match where there are many fielders behind the wicket.”We always wondered how Raqibul made that triple hundred all those years ago. It is not easy. Wickets used to be slower and take spin. We always talked about his innings in the Bangladesh dressing room, how he managed to do it. I think he faced around 600 balls too.”

New Man Utd coach Ruud van Nistelrooy is 'obsessed about defensive structure' with Dutchman hailed as inspired appointment by two Red Devils stars

Ruud van Nistelrooy has returned to Manchester United as part of Erik ten Hag's coaching staff and has already impressed two players in particular.

Man Utd bring in Van Nistelrooy as coachFormer striker's influence already being feltPlayers hail his defensive contributionsWHAT HAPPENED?

Ten Hag has added Van Nistelrooy and fellow Dutchman Rene Hake to his coaching staff as part of a summer shake-up. Van Nistelrooy has returned to the club where he plundered 150 goals and won Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup titles. The Dutchman is best known as a penalty-box predator but has impressed the squad since his return with his defensive nous.

AdvertisementWHAT TOM HEATON SAID

Goalkeeper Tom Heaton told The Guardian: "Me and Ruud spent a bit of time together then – I was always his go-to keeper for shooting. He’s been brilliant, his level of detail superb. You’d be forgiven for thinking that he’s a United legend coming in so is just here [as a face]. But his level of detail, and I’ve been in a couple of meetings, is outstanding.”

“He sort of said he could never really see himself managing, coaching. But in his final year playing, for Málaga [in 2011-12], he was with [Manuel] Pellegrini, and he said that Pellegrini saw, not that his legs had gone but that he was sort of done before he saw it.

“So Pellegrini would say: ‘Help these lot and try and work a few drills.’ And he said he really enjoyed it. He has also been very good defensively because he understands that side of it too. So I think he’ll be big for that. I have to say, I’ve played with quite a few players and he’s my favourite ever finisher, the best I’ve ever seen. He was brilliant.”

WHAT JONNY EVANS

Evans also spoke about Van Nistelrooy's influence. He added: "I’ll be coaching strikers when I’m older! Ruud did mention that – after he left United he had a spell when he went to Spain and he was talking about when he was under Pellegrini and real sort of diehard defensive coaches.

“I think he learned a lot and saw real value in it. He’s probably himself quite obsessed about defensive structure, and, as a striker, I’m sure that was always quite interesting [regarding] where he could score his goals.”

GettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Van Nistelrooy's defensive input will be valued, although Manchester United will be hoping the former striker can boost an attack that struggled last season. The Red Devils managed just 57 goals in 38 games as they endured their worst-ever Premier League finish. Rasmus Hojlund finished as the Red Devils' top scorer but netted just 16 goals following his big-money move from Atalanta.

Aston Villa must bench star who had fewer touches than Martinez v Luton

Aston Villa recorded their third Premier League win in a row, although it took a late Lucas Digne winner to seal all three points.

Luton Town threatened to snatch a share of the spoils, clawing back a two-goal deficit, but the mentality that Unai Emery has installed in his team is why they are currently sitting in the top four.

The fixtures are set to come thick and fast over the next few weeks, however, as the club get set to take on Ajax in the last 16 of the Europa Conference League.

Unai Emery

This means Emery may have to reshuffle his starting XI in order to keep things fresh, indicating that a few players may drop out…

Youri Tielemans was poor against Luton, and he could make way for someone more effective.

Youri Tielemans’ statistics vs Luton Town

The Belgian was unleashed alongside Ollie Watkins against the Hatters as Emery went for a standard 4-4-2, but while the Englishman scored twice, Tielemans couldn’t quite get into the game.

He failed to have a single shot on goal, made just one key pass and failed to create a big chance during the clash as he failed to provide a meaningful attacking contribution.

The former Leicester City midfielder lost possession 11 times throughout the tie and managed to take just 35 touches – 36 fewer than Emiliano Martínez in the sticks – while completing just 69% of his passes, and it was clear his stint alongside Watkins was poor.

Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans.

With Morgan Rogers and Moussa Diaby on the bench, it was a strange move seeing Tielemans start next to the in-form Watkins, and could this change ahead of the tie against Ajax in midweek?

The players who could replace Youri Tielemans against Ajax

Dropping the £150k-per-week ace to the bench makes sense and this gives Emery the option to unleash a couple of players in his place.

Rogers has registered 16 goal contributions this term – seven goals and nine assists – and can operate either on the wing or as a centre-forward, indicating that he could certainly be a useful option for the Spaniard to call upon.

The most obvious choice perhaps is Diaby, who has found himself on the bench recently for the Midlands side.

He has yet to hit the heights that saw him become one of the most feared attackers in the Bundesliga, scoring just six times for Villa, but he enjoyed a solid cameo against Luton.

The Frenchman set up Digne’s late winner while making one key pass and creating a big chance and there is no doubt he would be fresh after playing just 11 minutes on the weekend.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Tielemans may be able to offer a variety of qualities to this Villa side, but playing him in a more advanced role did not work well against Luton, and it is time Emery went for a player who has more experience in this area.

Diaby should be given the nod, especially if a 4-4-2 formation is chosen again, and he can take a lot of confidence from his late assist against the Hatters.

Jeetan Patel to work with England during T20I series in New Zealand

Wellington give the offspinner dispensation to miss three Plunket Shield games to take up role

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Oct-2019Jeetan Patel will join England’s T20I set-up in his native New Zealand in a new role as spin-bowling consultant next month, in what he hopes will be the first step in a future career as a coach.Patel will join up with the England squad when they arrive in Christchurch next week, having been given special dispensation by Cricket Wellington to miss the first three games of their Plunket Shield season.”Of course it’s tricky,” Patel said. “I’m a contracted player for Wellington, but also there’s life beyond cricket. The opportunity came up and I spoke to Cricket Wellington and they were very positive about me doing that, firstly for my development beyond playing, and it gives other guys an opportunity to perform in my place which is part of handing over the mantle.”It’s a matter of getting as much experience as you can wherever the roles are. That’s the great thing about these comps around the world. For me, looking at what’s next, you’ve got to tap into these opportunities when they arise because they don’t arise all the time.”To work with England is huge and I’m so grateful that this has come about – now it’s up to me what I do with it.”The series starts at Hagley Oval on November 1, and is the first step in England’s preparations for the T20 World Cup in Australia next year. There are two frontline spinners in England’s 15-man squad in the shape of Adil Rashid and Matt Parkinson, while Joe Denly and Dawid Malan are possible part-time options.Patel, 39, has been Warwickshire’s regular overseas player since 2012, and boasts an impressive T20 record, with 229 wickets in the format at an economy rate just below seven. He played 11 T20Is for New Zealand between 2005 and 2008, and last played international cricket in 2017.

BBC man reacts to "massive blow" for Corberan after West Brom injury news

Ahead of a crucial play-off run-in, West Bromwich Albion and Carlos Corberan have suffered a frustrating injury blow. Sat fifth and inside the Championship's top six by just four points, it's the last thing that the Baggies need.

West Brom injury news

West Brom's most recent outing saw them ease past Cardiff City 2-0 at the Hawthorns with goals from Michael Johnston and Andreas Weimann sealing all three points to continue Corberan's side's run towards the play-offs come May. It would be some achievement if the Baggies not only managed to secure a spot in the top six but then promotion at Wembley, given their takeover status.

Corberan could have West Brom's next Fellows in “bright” 18y/o starlet

West Bromwich Albion could have their next Tom Fellows in this young gem.

ByKelan Sarson Feb 14, 2024

Under Lai Guochuan, those at the Hawthorns have been incredibly limited when it comes to spending and their ability to keep hold of key players, handing Corberan an impossible task at times. Nonetheless, against the odds, they're now well and truly on course for a successful campaign, much to the credit of those on the pitch and the sidelines.

West Bromwich Albion owner Lai Guochuan watches on.

According to The Athletic, West Brom's takeover is edging closer, with Lai reportedly agreeing to pay back loans that initially started at £2m, before selling up to Florida-based businessman Shilen Patel. As far as good news goes, that's where it ends for the Midlands club, however, after some frustrating injury news.

After returning from Achilles tendon surgery in January, Daryl Dike ruptured his Achilles for a second time against Cardiff City, leaving the pitch in tears just five games after his initial return.

Reacting to the news, BBC pundit Carlton Palmer told Football League World: “I’m a massive fan of Daryl Dike. But since he joined West Brom, all he’s had is injury, after injury after injury. It’s a devastating blow for them, as West Brom are kicking on and wanting to get in the play-offs and do well, but Daryl just doesn’t play the games.”

“If he was fit, he gets goals, but his injury record is just not good enough. Once you get an Achilles tendon injury, it’s one of those – unless it’s 100% right, you’re going to be out for a serious amount of time. It’s a massive blow for West Bromwich Albion.”

Devastating for Dike

It's the worst possible news for Dike, who has been cursed with injuries since joining West Brom in January of 2022. Now set to miss another prolonged period of time, the American will need to bounce back yet again.

Rohit, Rahul smash centuries; India jump to top of points table

Angelo Mathews’ third ODI hundred against India came in defeat, while Lasith Malinga ended his World Cup career conceding 82 runs

The Report by Varun Shetty06-Jul-2019
As it happenedIndia didn’t quite get to test their middle order one last time before the semi-final, but Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul put up India’s fourth century for the opening stand in the tournament, made centuries of their own, and helped India to 15 points at the end of the group stage as they galloped to a seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka.WATCH on Hotstar (India only): Highlights of India’s win over Sri LankaThe openers put on 189 of the 265 India were set, unleashing strokes that ranged from pristine to borderline outrageous. They were able to recreate a pace that resembled that of India’s regular opening pair, and it came about because of Rohit’s uncharacteristic early aggression.Rohit’s century was accurately capsulised in the 17th over of India’s chase. His strike rate had only briefly dipped below run-a-ball when he was on 46, and he sorted that out by launching Dhananjaya de Silva over wide long-off, feet firmly rooted on the pitch. That didn’t seem enough; a ball later, he skipped down the track, and brought out a clean swing from underneath the ball, sending it straight back over the bowler for the longest six of the day.Preceding them were eight fours of all makes – languid pokes through the covers, whips through midwicket, even a one-handed loft over mid-on. Through the course of the stand, Rohit did pretty much anything he wanted. On 99, he pulled a Kasun Rajitha off-stump delivery to the midwicket boundary to bring up the record for most centuries – crossing Kumar Sangakkara’s four – in a World Cup well after he had vaulted to the top of the run-scoring charts.WATCH on Hotstar (USA only): Full match highlightsRahul was more true to his theme in the tournament but managed to play out his plans longer than any previous innings. While still occasionally circumspect outside the off stump, he began with a string of glorious drives through the off side against the new ball. India’s scoring rate at the start was significantly helped as a result, with even Lasith Malinga enduring a difficult time against the two right-hand batsmen. Rahul’s own scoring rate slowed down in the midst of Rohit’s fluency, but he too chose to break the shackles against Dhananjaya. His kickstart also involved getting to fifty against Sri Lanka’s only spinner on the day, and then hitting him straight.Rahul’s century was brought up with more precision than power, though that was understandable: it was his first ODI hundred since his debut ton against Zimbabwe in 2016. Malinga did manage to dismiss though, Rahul gloving behind as he limboed against a short ball that kept tailing back. India needed another 21 to get at that point, and Virat Kohli was there to see them through to the end.Rohit Sharma becomes the first player to hit five centuries in a single World Cup•Getty Images

India’s opening stand outdid the other century partnership on the day, a patient 124-run alliance for the fifth wicket between Angelo Mathews and Lahiru Thirimanne that kept Sri Lanka in the game after they had lost four wickets inside 12 overs. Sri Lanka’s most experienced batsmen had two jobs to do on the day – blunt India’s attack, aggressive fields and all, and try to give their bowlers a total to bowl at. They managed both, starting by playing low-risk shots and staying content scoring just over four an over for the first half of their partnership. Their first three boundaries together came after Kuldeep Yadav’s introduction – and against him – nearly 50 balls into the stand. Mathews was happy slashing the spinner through the off side on a pitch that offered a hint of grip and bounce. It was largely a batting-friendly surface and got easier and easier as the sun burst through in the middle of the day. Thirimanne couldn’t reap the benefits much past his fifty, but Mathews grew more dangerous as Dhananjaya stuck around with him. Mathews reverse-swept Kuldeep twice as he approached three-figures and continued punishing any width, of which there was plenty as India’s bowlers endured tepid second spells. Even the shot to bring up his third ODI century, all of which are against India, was a generous half-tracker that was carved over point. That innings, and that partnership came after India seemed to have sealed Sri Lanka’s fate much earlier in the day. Jasprit Bumrah had begun with two consecutive maidens, one of which contained the wicket of Dimuth Karunaratne, who edged behind on the angle. Bhuvneshwar Kumar didn’t quite hit his straps in overseas conditions though, and his day didn’t get any better when Kuldeep and Hardik Pandya had a moment of miscommunication as they got under a toe-ended loft from Kusal Perera; Hardik didn’t seem to hear the call at mid-on, and Kuldeep, the mid-off fielder who was closer to the line of the ball only mustered a weak flap at the ball with Hardik in his peripheral vision. But onto that vulnerability was Bumrah again, this time using the angle to induce a cut from Kusal, only to get his inside edge, which MS Dhoni grabbed onto. Kusal chose to walk as India contemplated a review, and he would be followed shortly by Kusal Mendis, who ran down at Ravindra Jadeja’s fourth ball of the day to be beaten in flight and stumped. Dhoni added a fourth dismissal – two fewer than Adam Gilchrist’s World Cup record of six – when Avishka Fernando gloved a slower bouncer to him but Sri Lanka’s collapse stopped at 55 for 4. It did prove vital though – 264 on a good batting surface was not going to trouble India. And it was the perfect representation of a disappointing tournament for them.

Reporter says Newcastle target’s name is "bubbling away" behind the scenes

Much of Newcastle United's January transfer window has been centred around potential departures, as they look to balance the books and stay within the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules. However, into the final week of the winter window, the Magpies could turn their attention to a surprising reinforcement.

Newcastle transfer news

So far this month, and more so in the last week, we've seen Miguel Almiron heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia side Al-Shabab, Callum Wilson linked with a number of Premier League clubs in a deal worth £18m, and Kieran Trippier linked with a winter switch to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

Yet, as the deadline approaches, none of the aforementioned stars have sealed an exit away from St James' Park. Instead, Eddie Howe could welcome a bargain transfer to reinforce his midfield.

According to Aaron Stokes, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is a name being discussed behind the scenes at St James' Park by Newcastle. The reporter told The Chronicle: "There's one name that has been bubbling away under the surface and that is Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg."

The Premier League's profit and sustainability rules state that clubs are only allowed to record a loss of £105m in the space of three seasons. Newcastle's loss in that time reportedly stands at £155m. And although investment into the women's team, charity foundation and academy don't count towards the final figure, PIF are certainly walking a fine line.

Given Hojbjerg's struggle for game time under Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur, the Dane is certainly in need of a move away this month, and Newcastle could offer him exactly that. It's a deal that could suit the Magpies too, as they look to avoid spending big whilst still welcoming key additions.

"Important" Hojbjerg can provide short-term solution

With summer signing Sandro Tonali still serving his long-term ban for breaching betting rules and Joelinton now sidelined with a long-term injury, Newcastle have been left short on options in midfield. But that's where a player of Hojbjerg's experience can come in. The Denmark international is a player who has played on the biggest stage and one who has earned the praise of Postecoglou, despite falling down the pecking order.

Postecoglou said via The Independent: “I don’t think there was any time during the transfer window where I thought Pierre would move,” Postecoglou insisted. The discussions I had with him were that he was here and wanted to contribute, he wanted to be part of what we were building.

“It is obvious someone that has played regularly would have wanted to play more but ultimately our performances have been strong and he has had to bide his time. He has also been very important in a lot of the games that we’ve won late or had to shore up late. He has been one of the people who has helped us and it is not like he hasn’t contributed at all. He’s been a really important part for us."
