Everton now working on £21m deal to sign "special" star before Liverpool

As the Friedkin Group look to make their mark once again, Everton are reportedly already working on a £21m deal to sign an attacking talent ahead of Merseyside rivals Liverpool this summer.

Everton transfer news

The Toffees have certainly had more reason to be positive since the return of David Moyes, having steered clear of the relegation zone and onto likely safety in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Friedkin haven’t exactly had a bad start away from the action – welcoming Carlos Alcaraz on loan from Flamengo in what should hand Moyes an exciting player in central midfield.

Carlos Alcaraz for Flamengo.

Whilst defeat in the FA Cup did bring their momentum to a frustrating halt, the Toffees have the perfect chance to bounce back when they host the final ever Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Wednesday. It’s there that they’ll have the chance to prevent rivals Liverpool from going as many as nine points clear in the Premier League title race – at which point it would undeniably be theirs to lose.

It’s not just on the pitch that those at Goodison Park could stand in the way of the Reds, however. According to reports in Spain, Everton are already working on a deal to sign Rayan Cherki ahead of Liverpool this summer in a transfer that would be worth €25m (£21m). Reportedly in pole position, the Toffees look set to swoop in on a player who has long been linked with their rivals.

The young attacking midfielder, who can also play on both the right and left-hand side of a front three, looks destined to leave Lyon even after he was denied the chance to do so and join Borussia Dortmund in the January transfer window.

Given Lyon’s desperate financial situation, they won’t be able to remain firm forever and will likely have no choice but to sell if the likes of Everton come calling. With Liverpool also reportedly interested, meanwhile, the French club could quickly commence quite the race between the two Merseyside clubs.

"Special" Cherki would ignite Everton's attack

Whilst Moyes has so far managed to get an electric tune out of what was a choir-like attack under Sean Dyche, there’s no denying that he still needs fresh faces within his frontline. And that’s where Cherki should come in.

The 21-year-old has been one of the most highly-praised talents in European football at times this season, including from Ben Mattinson. The analyst went as far as to say that the Lyon man is a “special creator” who is “creative from all areas of the pitch” last month.

The stats certainly only add credit to that verdict too. In a struggling Lyon side, Cherki has been involved in 17 goals in all competitions so far this season – finding the back of the net six times himself and creating another 11 goals.

The Frenchman looks destined for the top, which could yet feature a summer switch to the Premier League and Everton.

'I reaped the rewards of the guys who bowled before me' – Zampa after career-best figures

Adam Zampa shifted all the praise onto Australia’s pace bowlers for the pressure they applied in the second ODI, labelling his delivery to remove Kane Williamson “c***”, with the New Zealand captain left to lament his team’s “soft” cricket as they saw another strong position slip away.Australia were 117 for 8 before the last two wickets added 78, with Zampa playing an important role. New Zealand’s top order was then rendered virtually scoreless. They were left 14 for 3 after ten overs by the pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Sean Abbott – the latter bowling 28 dot balls, and taking two wickets, on his comeback before conceding a run.Zampa, who claimed his first wicket with a big full toss that Williamson missed, was especially delighted for Abbott. Zampa himself finished with a career-best 5 for 35 but reflected that he felt “a little bit off”.”To be honest, I haven’t seen a run [economy] rate like that in an ODI probably ever,” Zampa said. “Our guys showed some serious discipline. I mean Hazlewood and Starc were both excellent, but in particular Sean Abbott, who has been in and out of the team. Think over five, six, seven years, he has played five or six games. So to take his opportunity now – it’s tough when you are sitting on the pine [being left out] for four or five games, sometimes having only one opportunity to make your mark, it can get the better of you. But he bowled outstandingly today and super proud of Sean.”I bowled terribly. Well, I wouldn’t say terribly…but was one of those days where I felt a little bit off, probably wasn’t quite at my best but there was a lot happening. Sometimes when it’s like that and you are bowling to the tail you can go searching for wickets, which I did, [but] probably felt like we were in position to go searching for some wickets tonight. I think I reaped the rewards of the guys who bowled before me.”I had a bit of luck with the Kane dismissal, then got into my work a bit better from there. They say legspinners can bowl a bit of c*** and get wickets. When that c*** comes out and you see it go down, you start walking back to your mark knowing you’ve got an extra six runs against your name. But that happens.”Williamson, who threw his head back in anguish after missing the full toss and called for a review purely out of hope, said New Zealand’s batting needed to be better at adapting to the conditions – which he termed “very slow and hard to get rhythm” – something they had done successfully on the tour of the West Indies last month where they came from 1-0 down to take the series.”No doubt the conditions are tough but we have to be a little bit smarter,” Williamson said. “Today I thought we were too soft in terms of our dismissals, we did need to try and weather the storm a bit. It was going to be a challenge, but if you could try and stick together. There wasn’t a lot of scoreboard pressure so you try to reverse that momentum later in the game and get through the tough spells.”The new ball was quite challenging and Australia were just outstanding with the lengths they are able to hit, the pressure they built, and they got some early wickets as well. It is almost old-school one-day cricket where you are just trying to get through spells. As we saw, Australia were able to get two partnerships that were able to get them a competitive total, so certainly some lessons to learn.”However, he insisted that New Zealand did not have a psychological barrier to get over as they tried to beat Australia on their soil for the first time since 2011. “It’s cricket, they are a very good side, they’ve played well and adapted to conditions,” he said. “[But] we do need to be better than we were tonight.”The final ODI takes place on Sunday and the two teams will meet again in their opening match of the T20 World Cup at the SCG in October.

One of the world’s best: Man City could sign dream Marmoush alternative

Manchester City have been the most active side in the Premier League so far during January, making numerous moves that hopefully will improve Pep Guardiola’s side.

Victor Reis appears to be edging ever closer to a move to the Etihad, with the Brazilian flying over to England to complete his transfer from Palmeiras for around £30m.

The youngster will be looking to provide added cover to the club’s backline, potentially linking up with another new addition, Abdoukodir Khusanov, who also looks set to move to Manchester in the coming days.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that a deal has been agreed with French side Lens over a move for the 20-year-old, with it just a matter of time until the move is completed.

The aforementioned pair could also be joined by another new addition in the North West, further aiding Guardiola’s chances of improving the current run of form in England’s top flight.

Man City’s move to land Omar Marmoush

Over the last few days, City have ramped up their efforts to land Eintracht Frankfurt talisman Omar Marmoush after his superb start to the 2024/25 season for the Bundesliga outfit.

The Egyptian already has 15 goals to his name, providing that attacking threat that the Citizens have often lacked in recent months – even with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland in the side.

Eintracht Frankfurt's OmarMarmoushcelebrates scoring their second goal

He looked set for a transfer to Nottingham Forest in the summer, but the Reds failed to match the £25m price tag for his services, with their loss set to be City’s gain in the hunt for a top four spot come the end of May.

Journalist Romano has been on top of the move for the attacker, claiming that he’s already agreed terms, but that the two clubs are in talks over a potential fee for the 25-year-old.

City have already made a proposal for his services, but it remains to be seen whether it will be accepted or if they will have to up their bid to convince Frankfurt to part ways with their star man.

Whilst a deal could be heading in the right direction, should they failure to match the asking price, they could turn to another transfer target to provide the goods in attacking areas.

Manchester City's dream Marmoush alternative

Jonathan David is a player who has also been touted with a move to Manchester in recent weeks, but they aren’t the only side in the race with Liverpool, Manchester United and Spurs also credited with an interest.

The Canada international could be set to depart current side Lille this month, with his contract expiring in the summer, he could be free to talk to foreign clubs over a pre-contract agreement.

However, given his contact scenario, City could look to take advantage and sign the 24-year-old on the cheap, certainly providing a cheaper alternative to Marmoush.

Being cost-effective is one thing, but David would also provide serious quality to the side, scoring 11 times in just 17 Ligue 1 appearances, only registering four fewer goals to date.

However, David, who’s previously been dubbed “one of the best strikers in the world” by Tony Marinaro, has matched or bettered the Egyptian across numerous key areas throughout 2024/25.

The Canadian may have scored fewer goals, but has registered a better shot-on-target rate along with a higher goal per shot-on-target rate, showcasing his clinical edge in attacking areas.

He’s also managed a higher take-on success rate, along with more aerials won, potentially being a more all-round option than Marmoush for Guardiola in the years ahead.

Whilst undoubtedly the Frankfurt man remains the number one target this month, David’s stats are evident that he would be the perfect alternative should any deal fail to materialise.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Garnacho has been linked with a potential exit since the start of the season, as the Argentine winger has struggled for form under both Erik Ten Hag and Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils have struggled themselves, however, the board is opting to give Amorim his preferred squad for next season, and as such, they are considering making a fire sale in the summer.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Reports have suggested that United want to give Amorim a transfer budget of around £200 million this summer, and to achieve that budget, they will have to make a number of sales at slashed prices. As per Tutto Mercato’s Niccolo Ceccarini, the Red Devils have slashed their asking price for Garnacho from €60 million (£51.6m/$67.8m) to €45 million (£38.7m/$50.8m) for this summer.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Napoli had been interested in signing Garnacho since last summer, however, a move never came to fruition as United preferred to keep the Argentine at Old Trafford. However, with the 20-time Premier League champions now potentially open to selling the 20-year-old, Gli Azzurri could be free to strike a deal for the winger.

    WHAT NEXT FOR GARNACHO?

Despite his lack of form, Garnacho will continue on as a regular for Amorim in the squad, as the entire squad has struggled since the Portuguese boss' arrival, and he will not be keen on trying new combinations when United take on Lyon in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final clash.

Arsenal plotting move to sign their new Aaron Ramsey this January

While Arsenal’s pursuit of the Premier League is currently rather uncertain, one thing is for certain; the Gunners must strengthen their squad this January.

If Bukayo Saka’s hamstring injury wasn’t enough, then more dropped points against Brighton and Ethan Nwaneri’s muscular problem that will keep him out for ‘a few weeks’ should be.

That said, supporters will have to remain patient as the winter window is a notoriously difficult one to do business in.

Clubs don’t want to lose their star players due to the limited amount of time they have to replace them and as a result, it’s likely you have to pay way over the odds if you want your man and they aren’t available.

Despite that, not bringing in any new players would be inexcusable given Arsenal are six points behind league leaders Liverpool having played one more game.

Arsenal's January transfer window plans

We are now a week into the January window and haven’t seen much activity on Arsenal’s end.

A potential move for Wolves attacker Matheus Cunha has been touted but the latest on that is the Brazilian could be set to put pen to paper on a new deal at Molineux.

Arsenal may have to get creative therefore and reports suggest they have had a bid rejected for Botafogo striker Igor Jesus.

So, who else have they been linked with? Well, they could prise away Jude Bellingham’s brother, Jobe Bellingham.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

That’s according to Football Transfers who report this week that ‘Arsenal have set their sights’ on the 19-year-old

The club’s scouts are monitoring his progress closely and it’s thought that Bellingham is now a ‘top priority for manager Mikel Arteta’.

According to talkSPORT, the midfielder is expected to cost around £20m. Any move could well see a repeat of a deal to bring Aaron Ramsey to the Emirates Stadium back in 2008.

How Jobe Bellingham compares to Aaron Ramsey

In the summer of 2008, a young Welshman was capturing the imagination of plenty in English football.

Ramsey was making waves with Cardiff City in the Championship and it wasn’t long before Manchester United came calling. Infamously they even announced they had agreed a deal on their official club website.

Luckily for those of an Arsenal persuasion, he rejected the Red Devils and ended up signing for the Gunners in a £5m deal.

262 Premier League appearances and two FA Cup final goals later and the midfielder had cemented himself as a firm fan favourite at the Emirates. It’s just a shame the way he left.

Well, as a young star also shining in England’s second tier, a deal to bring Bellingham to north London would certainly evoke memories of Ramsey’s arrival.

They’re not too dissimilar either with the Sunderland ace not too far behind when it comes to goal and assist rate in the EFL during the embryonic stages of his career to date.

Ramsey joined Arsenal as an exciting attacking midfielder and Bellingham is certainly similar in that regard. Described as a “game-breaking midfielder” by data analyst Ben Mattinson, he highlights the teenager’s ‘powerful ball carrying’ and notes that he ‘loves to make runs into the box off the ball and arrive to finish cutbacks.’

That trait was something the Welshman certainly perfected during his time in red and white, notoriously scoring as many as 16 goals in the 2013/14 campaign when Arsenal won the FA Cup.

Bellingham has four league goals and three assists this term so he’s not quite in that ballpark yet but his ability to create magic in the final third is not going unnoticed.

A further look at the stats, however, tells us why we should all be excited about the Englishman’s potential.

Compared to positionally similar players in the Championship this term, he ranks among the top 9% of players for combined goals and assists while sitting in the best 10% for ball recoveries, rubber-stamping the Ramsey-like qualities at his disposal.

Indeed, the Wales international wasn’t just competent in attacking areas but like Bellingham, he worked hard to win the ball back and made sure he did his job from a defensive standpoint.

Arsenal could now make astronomical bid for £35k-p/w star who Arteta loves

Arsenal are now interested in a new target and could be ready to table an astronomical offer to secure his services, according to a fresh report, with Mikel Arteta hugely impressed by him.

Arsenal's midfield in need of a revamp

Arsenal’s midfield is facing a key summer ahead despite the arrival of Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad over the summer. Thomas Partey is out of contract at the end of the season as things stand, while Jorginho will also become a free agent should Arsenal opt not to take up the option of an extra year in his deal at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners may therefore be in the market for a defensive midfielder, but there is also the suggestion that another midfielder will be required, with Martin Odegaard’s absence showing just how reliant they are on the Norway international and, with Merino having arrived to fill Granit Xhaka’s role in midfield, there is no natural replacement for the Spaniard either.

In the case of Odegaard, there is hope within the club that Ethan Nwaneri may provide an in-house solution to that problem with the teenager having grabbed his first Premier League goal in the 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest and seemingly on the verge of a breakout campaign in north London.

However, with Declan Rice likely to play at the base of midfield in the future, another option who can play on the left side could be important for the Gunners, and now there seems to be a new target that has caught their eye.

Mikel Arteta "in love" with midfielder as Arsenal eye move

That comes as reports in Spain claim that Gunners boss Arteta is “in love” with AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders after the Dutchman enjoyed a strong start to the campaign at San Siro.

The 26-year-old has been virtually an ever-present for Milan when available and has repaid the faith shown in him by Paulo Fonseca with a goal and three assists playing either as a number six or a number eight.

Serie A analyst Matt Santangelo was particularly keen to hail one performance against Real Madrid, in which the midfielder was “top class”, adding that the “secret is surely out, Tijj is fantastic”.

Standing at 6ft tall, he would add yet more physicality to the Gunners, who have garnered a reputation for just that. According to the report, his arrival is “among the Arsenal manager’s top wishes”, and he has been “impressed by the midfielder’s qualities”, with a potential astronomical offer forthcoming in the summer.

His arrival won’t be easy though; with Milan under no pressure to sell. With the Gunners also keen to strengthen in attack next summer in what is likely to be a significant outlay to bolster their frontline, could they stump up the funds required to land Reijnders too?
