Man Utd targeting Zirkzee alternative who’s "like Cristiano Ronaldo"

Since the end of the Sir Alex Ferguson era, Manchester United have struggled to find a striker who can guarantee them goals. There were plenty of deadly marksmen under the legendary Scot, but since his retirement in 2013, the Red Devils have not managed to find someone who can hit the back of the net consistently.

However, that is not for lack of trying to find a replacement. They have had many centre-forwards over the years, some have had more success than others. Radamel Falcao struggled to make an impact in red and scored just four times during his one-year loan stint at Old Trafford in 2014/15.

Radamel Falcao

The likes of Romelu Lukaku and Edinson Cavani also represented the club, two of the 21st century’s biggest names. Lukaku’s numbers were not bad, with 42 goals in 96 games, and Cavani was excellent, but sadly injury-prone. The Uruguayan scored 19 goals in 59 outings for the Red Devils.

Of course, the biggest of these names is Cristiano Ronaldo. The legendary Portugal striker scored 27 goals across 54 appearances during his second spell at the club but fell out with Erik ten Hag and left the club.

United are still looking to find the perfect striker to consistently find the back of the net. With the transfer window now open, they have been linked with one man who could be their main man up front.

Man Utd target Premier League striker

The player in question here is Everton and England international Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The 27-year-old has been consistently linked with a move away from Goodison Park this summer, with United offering a potential destination for the striker.

At least, that is according to a report from The Athletic who report that 'talks have taken place' amongst the new hierarchy at Old Trafford for a potential deal with Calvert-Lewin, with Brentford striker Ivan Toney also under consideration.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin celebrates against Liverpool

According to the report, Everton are 'open to selling' their talismanic striker this summer, due to their current financial issues, as opposed to letting him leave for free once his contract expires next summer.

A deal for the Englishman would cost around £30m and may well represent an alternative to Joshua Zirkzee. The Dutchman is said to be closing in on a move to Old Trafford according to some reports.

Why Calvert-Lewin would be a good signing

The Everton striker played 32 times in the Premier League last season, scoring seven goals and registering two assists along the way. However, his best season in the top flight came in 2020/21, when Calvert-Lewin bagged 16 times in 33 appearances.

That season, the Englishman played under one of the all-time great managers, Carlo Ancelotti. Football talent scout Jacek Kulig called the striker a “pure poacher”, explaining that the Italian turned Calvert-Lewin into “a monster” of a centre-forward. He may not be so prolific anymore but he still has some exciting attributes that help him live up to Ancelotti's billing of a few years ago.

Indeed, in terms of his profile, the Englishman uses his height to his advantage and is widely renowned as one of the best strikers in the air in the Premier League, with Richarlison once suggesting that he has a "leap on him like Cristiano Ronaldo".

He is also excellent in the penalty box and can sniff out a chance with great instinct like any top striker, hence why Kulig called him a “poacher”.

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin

One of the things to be cautious about when it comes to Calvert-Lewin is his injury record. Whilst, last season, his fitness issues were not as bad as previous campaigns, the Englishman has missed a lot of football in recent times. In 2021/22, he missed 34 matches with injury, and 2022/23 was not much better. The Everton number nine missed 29 games sidelined with an injury.

He is a different profile to Rasmus Hojlund, who likes to run the channels rather than hold the ball up. This is something which was pointed out by football analyst Adam Bate in an article with Sky Sports, who explained that the young Dane “would prefer to be running channels, finding space with his movement” rather than act as the hold-up striker Ten Hag used him as last season.

According to Fbref, last season in the Premier League, Calvert-Lewin averaged 5.68 aerial duels won per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 3% of strikers in the division. This gave him a win rate of 48.8%, placing him in the top 13% of strikers.

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin

His instinct in front of goal is also backed up by the stats from Fbref. Calvert-Lewin’s expected goals per game last season in the top flight was 0.53xG, ranking him in the top 17% of centre forwards. He also averaged 0.12 shots per game which then led to a goal-scoring shot, which placed him in the top 7%.

He has had previous successes against Manchester United for the Toffees. The England international grabbed a goal and an assist in a memorable 3-3 draw at Old Trafford during 2020/21, against a Red Devils defence that included Harry Maguire and David de Gea. His 95th-minute equaliser broke United hearts at the death having dominated the club's defence.

Should the Red Devils look to sign Calvert-Lewin this summer, he could become the centre-forward United have lacked in the years since Ferguson left the club. Although he has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, he is a quality penalty box striker with an eye for goal and offers something completely different to Rasmus Hojlund. For £30m, it could be an excellent deal for United.

Ben Stokes admits 'head wasn't in it' following father's cancer diagnosis

England allrounder arrives in New Zealand to be with family following father’s illness

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Aug-2020Ben Stokes has admitted that his “head wasn’t in it” during England’s Test series against Pakistan, after learning that his father Ged had been diagnosed with brain cancer.Stokes was granted indefinite compassionate leave earlier this month and missed the final two Tests of England’s series against Pakistan. He arrived in New Zealand this week to be with his family, and is currently in isolation to meet coronavirus protocols.”I didn’t sleep for a week and my head wasn’t really in it,” Stokes told the New Zealand Herald. “Leaving [the team] was the right choice from a mental point of view.”In an interview with the same paper, Ged Stokes, 64, had told how he had been diagnosed with the illness following his return from South Africa in January, where he had been watching his son in action during England’s four-Test series in the country.Stokes senior had been admitted to hospital over Christmas, on the eve of the first Test at Centurion, after suffering a brain bleed for which he had to undergo surgery. The cancer was subsequently diagnosed after his return home to Christchurch.”They had to assess how I travelled and from that they discovered I had a couple of tumours on my brain as well,” Stokes said.”So, basically brain cancer. How that came about nobody knows but obviously I’ve had a few bangs on my head through my life so that’s probably contributed to it.”Speaking about his father’s influence on his career, Ben Stokes acknowledged the debt he owed him for pushing him hard during his childhood, and said that his illness had redoubled his commitment to pushing himself on the field and in training.”He was tough [on me],” Stokes said. “But as I got older I realised it was all for a reason. He knew I wanted to be a professional sportsman and he was drilling that into me as I started to make a career in cricket.”During his days as a New Zealand rugby league player, Stokes senior opted to amputate a dislocated finger in order to get back on the field quicker, and his son has a habit of celebrating his cricket milestones with a three-fingered salute in his honour.”His reputation sort of speaks for itself,” Ben said. “You speak to anyone who knows him, played with him or worked with him, they’d all say the same thing. Most people acquire a softer side with age and sometimes with dad that has been quite weird to see.”What he’s going through has brought that side out as well – we all knew he had it, he just didn’t show it that often.”

Josh de Caires: Mike Atherton's son signs Middlesex contract

He made his second XI debut in 2017 at the age of 15 and last year scored a Second XI Championship century against Hampshire.”He is a very talented top-order batsman with good pedigree,” Middlesex head coach Stuart Law said. “We look forward to working with him over the coming years and helping in his development as a player and a young man.”

Farke must now unleash £20k-p/w Leeds star alongside Joseph

If Leeds United fail to pick up a win against Blackburn Rovers later this Saturday in the Championship, the alarm bells could start to be sounded around Elland Road that a potential promotion collapse is on the cards.

Yet, the Whites will know that an invaluable victory versus the Riversiders would ease anxieties around the West Yorkshire based club on the contrary.

Daniel Farke could feel making some switches here and there to his starting XI might see Leeds bounce back from their last two games without a win therefore, subtle tweaks that could inspire the Whites to a confident three points against John Eustace's visitors.

Wilfried Gnonto might well feel it's his time to shine again in the first-team spotlight today, with Daniel James dropping out as a result after failing to ever really kick into gear against Sunderland in the disappointing stalemate mid-week.

Wilfred Gnonto of Leeds United scores in the EFL Championship.

Wilfried Gnonto's season in numbers

Helping himself to eight goals and two assists in all competitions so far this season, Gnonto has become an important first-teamer for Leeds in the Championship even when talk at the start of the campaign centred on him being a wantaway man.

Refusing to play for the Whites owing to interest from the Premier League back in August, it's been a remarkable turnaround for the Italian who could displace James from the XI today if Farke decides to shake things up.

The Welsh attacker was out-of-sorts in the 0-0 draw with the Black Cats last match, failing to even fire a single on-target effort at Anthony Patterson's goal.

Gnonto could offer Leeds a far more direct threat ahead of a lacklustre James subsequently, with the 20-year-old winger scoring in his last two starts for the Whites before some recent injury issues which included that sublime thunderbolt against Millwall.

Described as being "explosive" by football scout Antonio Mango when the £20k-per-week winger was making waves at Leeds last season, Farke will hope his slick attacker can overwhelm Blackburn if selected.

Wilfried Gnonto

To catch out Blackburn even more, the German boss will also be tempted to drop Patrick Bamford and spring a further surprise on the Riversiders by starting Mateo Joseph in his place instead.

Mateo Joseph's season in numbers

Bamford would throw himself about in the Sunderland stalemate but to no avail when it came to rippling the back of the net with a goal, winning seven duels but only having one shot all night.

Farke might freshen things up as a result, with Joseph becoming an impact substitute for Leeds in the second tier as of late.

The young Spanish hotshot couldn't quite leave a lasting impression on the Sunderland defenders unfortunately, amassing just three touches of the ball from a brief eight-minute cameo, but the 20-year-old centre-forward has been far livelier and sharper in other league clashes.

He was particularly spritely against Coventry City when the Whites lost 2-1 from off the bench, giving his away team more energy and drive in the forward positions when replacing a poor Bamford.

From just 15 touches of the ball, Joseph would notch up three key passes and fire a solitary effort at Bradley Collins occupying the Sky Blues net.

Given a full 90 minutes, Joseph could well end up terrorising a susceptible Blackburn defence that shipped five goals to Bristol City last time out.

Farke won't want to unsettle the fixed XI that has delivered results consistently in 2024 away from this minor hiccup in form, but with the likes of Bamford and James underwhelming last match, these alterations could work a treat.

Jeff Stelling says Harry Kane-like £60m striker could be joining Tottenham

Jeff Stelling believes a £60 million striker who's the "nearest thing" to Tottenham legend Harry Kane could end up joining Spurs this summer.

Tottenham set sights on new centre-forward to replace Kane

Some reports in the last few weeks have claimed that Spurs are laying the groundwork to sign a centre-forward when the transfer window reopens, despite manager Ange Postecoglou coping well in his first season without Kane.

Tottenham may have tabled a bid for £24m Kane replacement in recent days

Spurs are eager to bring in his successor.

ByEmilio Galantini Apr 20, 2024

Son Heung-min and Richarlison has scored a combined 26 goals between them in all competitions this season in a great help for Postecoglou, with critics originally believing that Kane's influence would be too hard to replace.

Tottenham are still in the race for Champions League football and a top four finish, which many believed wouldn't be the case at the start of this season after Kane's multi-million pound departure to Bayern Munich last summer.

The last eight months have also given Spurs chiefs time to look at possible out-and-out replacements for Kane ahead of next season, with many believed to be enticing their interest.

Tottenham are apparently interested in Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez after his brilliant goalscoring haul in the Eredivisie this campaign, while the same can be said of Union St. Gillosie forward Mohamed Amoura.

Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez.

Closer to home, Spurs have even been linked with Newcastle star Alexander Isak, who recently helped to put them to the sword at St. James' Park. The north Londoners have reportedly set aside "big funds" for a world-class striker signing this summer (Pete O'Rourke), which will be needed given just how in demand they are across Europe.

Another big name attracting Tottenham's attention is Brentford star Ivan Toney, who looks very likely to leave the Bees ahead of 24/25. The "world class" England international's contract expires in 2025, and he's been sporadically linked with a move to N17 after his 20-goal haul last campaign.

Jeff Stelling says Toney could choose to join Tottenham

His price tag is rumoured to be around £50-£60 million, but presenter Stelling has told talkSPORT that Toney could choose to join Tottenham as the club most suited to him.

“My next thought is about Ivan Toney," said Stelling. "We know, we know, I don’t need to be worried about being disrespectful because we know he is going to be on the move. We were talking about Spurs for Eberechi Eze, but Ivan Toney. No, I don’t see him as an Arsenal player, I don’t see him joining any of the top four as they are now.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney

“Manchester United, for sure, because Rasmus Hojlund, he is going to go on and be a good footballer, and I think we would all agree with that, but right now, you know, he is learning his trade. Toney is pretty much the finished article, but I think the obvious choice for Ivan Toney is Tottenham.

“I think if they want somebody who is the nearest thing you can get to a Harry Kane, who can influence the game in all areas of the pitch, who scores goals as well, come deep, he can lead the line brilliantly.”

FPL bonus points: how they work and this season’s best players

For Fantasy Premier League enthusiasts, having a good weekend in the realm of FPL can be almost as important as their teams getting the results they need in the real world.

Only in FPL can you get joy out of a rival bagging a hat-trick, squeezing in a last-minute assist or even simply staying on the bench to activate an FPL substitute.

Part of the bizarre world of fantasy football is bonus points. But how do they work, and who are the masters of picking them up week in, week out? In this article, we've broken down how it is calculated and who the best performers are this term, as well as shared the greatest bonus-point hauls in FPL history.

All data correct as of 5th March 2024.

How the FPL Bonus Points System works

johan-bakayoko-bukayo-saka-tottenham-opinion

For every Premier League game, the top three players are handed bonus points related to their individual performance. Based on stats from Opta, players can receive up to 3 bonus points on top of their FPL score.

A separate points system is used to rank players for each match, with the top performer earning 3 points, the second-best player getting 2 and the third-best receiving 1. In the event of a tie, multiple players can earn a singular point.

To calculate these points, players are awarded for a variety of performance-related metrics through the Bonus Points System (BPS), including more standard things like scoring goals and keeping clean sheets, as well as more in-depth elements such as having a high pass completion rate and creating big chances.

Players can also lose points for match actions under the BPS like conceding penalties, making errors that lead to goals and being caught offside. Of course, some actions are more valuable (and detrimental) than others, as the table below shows:

Players with the most bonus points in FPL this season (2023/24)

Pascal Gross (Brighton & Hove Albion) – 26

Brighton midfielder Pascal Gross has been in exceptional form recently, with the German securing at least 2 bonus points in four of the last five GWs until the Seagulls' recent defeat at Fulham. Nevertheless, his haul leaves him as the league's current bonus points king.

Scoring once and assisting four in that time, he is comfortably Brighton's best performer (at least in FPL terms) at present, having over twice as many BPs as closest challenger Joao Pedro (11).

Douglas Luiz (Aston Villa) – 25

Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz

Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz has collected bonus points galore this term, helped no end by his goalscoring exploits from the middle of the park (and the penalty spot).

Indeed, 25 of his 130 FPL points this season have been bonus ones, picking up 7 in the month of February alone. It almost beggars belief that someone priced at just 5.6 is owned by just 11% of players, particularly when you consider Villa's form in 2023/24.

He holds on to second spot despite drawing a blank in terms of bonuses last weekend, when a teammate of his certainly stole the show…

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa) – 24

Ollie Watkins continued his superb form this season with another double at Luton Town as Aston Villa snatched a late victory. Grabbing the three-pointer following his latest brace, he overtook Mohamed Salah and Bukayo Saka's bonus points totals. He also stretched his lead as the leading FPL scorer with a total of 183, seven clear of the Arsenal ace. Those bonus points are certainly making a difference.

Players with the most points under the Bonus Points System this season

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa) – 621

Now the leading overall points scorer in FPL this season, there's little surprise over Ollie Watkins raking in the bonus points. Lagging just behind the league's best in that regard with 21, he is certainly doing his best to put himself in the conversation.

Of course, goals massively help the Aston Villa striker's cause, and racking up even more before the season's end will surely see a rise in bonus points as Unai Emery's side chase a Champions League place.

Phil Foden (Man City) – 615

Phil Foden for Manchester City.

He's certainly the man of the moment, and Phil Foden's exceptional form has not gone unnoticed in the bonus points system. He's now taken the maximum of 3 for a second gameweek running, and that's been helped by picking up plenty of points under the BPS. He scored 54 last weekend – a value he has only topped once this season after his hat-trick against Brentford when he posted a pretty insane 73.

Bukayo Saka (Arsenal) – 610

Saka is proving to be more than just Arsenal's main man this year. The 22-year-old has amassed BPS points galore this season, though he has dropped from top spot despite recording two assists in the 6-0 rout of Sheffield United on Monday night.

Indeed, the winger was taken off at half-time as a precaution, with Mikel Arteta claiming he was feeling unwell, and he ended the night with just 23 BPS points. That he only managed 28 the week before when scoring against Newcastle shows what could have been as the Gunners ran riot at Bramall Lane.

Players with the most bonus points in FPL history

According to fantasy football blog ALLABOUTFPL, the most bonus points a player has received in a single season is Cesc Fabregas, who grabbed 54 for Arsenal in the 2006/07 season, although they were calculated in a different way to today's system.

Since FPL's creation in 2002/03, only 11 players have notched as many as 40 bonus points in one campaign. That includes, unsurprisingly, Manchester City's Erling Haaland, and former Spurs supremo Gareth Bale.

Robin van Persie and Harry Kane have the almost-unique distinction of having reached that tally twice, while Eden Hazard is the only other title winner (along with Fabregas, Haaland and Van Persie) to hit 40 BPs.
