Spurs: Could Alli be Mourinho’s next Salah?

It’s still very much the curious case of Dele Alli at Tottenham Hotspur this season.

Despite all of Spurs’ recent struggles, Jose Mourinho has still rarely turned to the out-of-favour midfielder and now his future in north London is surely hanging by a thread.

An exit in January was blocked late on by Daniel Levy but with the 25-year-old only featuring for a grand total of 984 minutes in all competitions, the chairman could look to cash in on the £26m-rated dynamo this time round.

If he does indeed go through with sanctioning his departure, it could well be a decision he regrets in the long run.

Mourinho has a sorry history when it comes to giving young talent a chance, and whilst it feels like Alli has been around forever, the 37-time England international is far from reaching his peak years.

Alli, aside from Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, has been one of Spurs’ best players in recent years.

It was only in the 2016/17 season that he bagged a whopping 18 goals from midfield, whilst he has also clinched back-to-back PFA Young Player of the Year awards – the first player to achieve that feat since Wayne Rooney in 2005, and the third-ever to do so.

That year, Spurs legend Darren Anderton waxed lyrical about Alli, comparing him to both Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes, going onto call him a “freak of a talent” and a “real joy to watch” (quotes sourced via Goal).

You simply cannot afford to leave out a player as talented as Alli all season, and ultimately it’s cost Spurs dearly.

Mourinho has a poor history in this regard too, writing off the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah at Chelsea, going on to sell them to Wolfsburg and Fiorentina, respectively.

No one needs reminding of how their careers have panned out since then, but as a Premier League and Champions League winner, Salah is perhaps the Portuguese’s worst mistake.

The Egyptian’s rise has been astronomical but the signs of that potential were staring Mourinho right in the face, as former Blues teammate Felipe Luis told the Guardian, Salah was like Lionel Messi in training.

“I suffered Salah in training,” claimed the Brazilian defender. “When he went Fiorentina, I said: ‘Why are you going, Momo? This is Chelsea.’ And he said: ‘I need to play.’ I thought: ‘This kid’s good.’ He never went for money or to win more; he went to show he could play. In training, he was like Messi. Really, like Messi. Ask anyone.”

Now Alli may not go onto repeat the impressive exploits of Salah, but there’s every chance he could given it is Paris Saint-Germain are interested in his services and they made the UCL final last year, and are consistently winning Ligue 1.

The difference between the Englishman at Spurs now, and both Salah and De Bruyne at Chelsea then, is that he’s already delivered and proven his worth over several seasons. And that will make this error even more glaring, in a shorter time frame, too.

Mourino cannot afford to repeat this blunder this summer.

Claim dropped on potential NUFC takeover

Mark Douglas has dropped a claim explaining what this week’s developments on beIN mean for the potential takeover of Newcastle United by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group.

As per a report from the Associated Press earlier this week, the Serie A is set to lose a lot of money due to the ongoing disputes between beIN and the KSA, as they gained a lot of revenue from the Qatari broadcaster.

Given that beIN is still banned in Saudi Arabia with the tensions still firmly high, added to the strong relationship that the Serie A has with the KSA, the Qatari broadcaster have ostracised the Italian top flight, even telling other countries not to bid for their TV rights.

Douglas has made a connection between this report and the potential takeover of the St. James’ Park faithful, given the previous issues that the Premier League have held with the KSA about streaming live fixtures from the division illegally, with beIN currently their sole provider in the Gulf region.

Writing in his latest piece for The Chronicle, the football journalist has claimed that any issues with beIN ‘may well become a priority’ for the KSA’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) if the pending arbitration case is a success for the Magpies.

Newcastle need beIN on their side

As Douglas suggests, assuming that PIF will come back to the table, the North East club will need to try and get beIN on their side in order to have the best chance of a takeover being completed by the Saudi consortium.

The unblocking of the Qatari broadcaster in the Kingdom may well go a long way in doing this, but that is not a formality given that there are clearly still tensions between the two Gulf countries.

Claim dropped on potential NUFC takeover

Mark Douglas has dropped a quite promising claim on a potential takeover of Newcastle United after James Pallotta was recently interviewed by The Athletic.

In this interview, the former co-owner and chairman of AS Roma expressed an interest in buying a club in the Premier League, namechecking the St. James’ Park faithful in the midst of it.

Writing in his latest piece for The Chronicle, Douglas claimed that it is now the third time that Pallotta has referenced the North East club, and shared that it is understood that he has done some due diligence on them.

Douglas even claimed that the Tyneside club would be Pallotta’s preference as he attempts to bring together an investment group that would have the financial muscle to buy from Mike Ashley.

Pallotta takeover possible?

Judging by the claims made by Douglas, on top of the comments made by Pallotta himself, it seems very possible that he could eventually complete a takeover of the Magpies.

This would come in handy if the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group decide to pull out altogether given that the KSA’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) have not come back to the table as of yet.

Nonetheless, it is promising to hear of Pallotta’s interest in the Toon, which may well be visited in the future.

West Ham target Juventus’ Aaron Ramsey

David Moyes should urge West Ham United to launch a pursuit of Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey in the summer transfer market.

What’s the word?

According to Calciomercato, the London Stadium may emerge as an attractive destination for Ramsey in the off-season.

West Ham and Crystal Palace are expected to contend for the Wales international’s signature in the next transfer window amid doubts over his future in Turin.

Juventus intend to use the summer market as a chance to reinforce Andrea Pirlo’s midfield options, but first have to clear a route for any potential arrivals.

Ramsey and teammate Adrien Rabiot are both thought to enter sporting director Fabio Paratici’s thinking of those who may be sold, with the pair earning €7m per season (£115,000 per week) each after tax.

Former Arsenal playmaker Ramsey has also suffered with injuries and, as such, has been unable to deliver consistent performances for the Serie A giants this season.

Interest is not lacking, though, with West Ham leading Palace in the emerging race for the 30-year-old’s signature. The Irons are expected to become a more attractive destination for Ramsey should they qualify for a European competition, with Moyes’ side currently just two points outside the Champions League places.

Should West Ham sign Ramsey?

Regardless of the outcome to West Ham’s pursuit for a European berth, Moyes should urge the Hammers’ board to fund a move for Ramsey at the end of the season and acquire him a player with game-changing ability.

Ramsey was a creative force at the Emirates Stadium and never went a season without contributing to the scoring at some stage, to see that Arsene Wenger believed Arsenal made a mistake by allowing him to leave.

“It will be a loss for Arsenal,” Wenger said in 2019, via quotes shared by The Sun. “I must say it will be an interesting move for Ramsey.

“He is a player who is great going forward. His main quality is he can keep the final ball. And he makes interesting runs from deep.

“You don’t find many players today who can make midfield runs off the ball. It will be an interesting addition for Juventus.”

The £18m-rated midfielder spent more than a decade in north London and had a direct involvement in 91 goals in 262 Premier League games, scoring 40 and assisting 51.

Tomas Soucek has excelled for Moyes in a similar midfield role by making late runs into the box for West Ham, with the Czech Republic star netting 12 times in 42 top-flight games, including nine in 29 appearances this term.

Moyes would only expect to see Soucek’s numbers continue their incredible rise with another player at his disposal capable of occupying the thoughts of opposing defenders, and who can also provide the pivotal final touch or pass.

A deal for Ramsey may require an expensive package being presented to the player and Juventus, but it is certainly a route West Ham should explore if his time in Turin is nearing its end.

Celtic: Could Johnny Russell be on the move?

With Celtic’s season essentially done and dusted for another year, the priority is all about the future now.

Finding a successor to Neil Lennon is of utmost importance but if you believe reports, they’re also on the hunt for a Director of Football.

Whoever comes in will have a big task on their hands with a number of players potentially leaving.

On the chalkboard

The Athletic have predicted that as many as 12 players could leave Parkhead in the summer, whether it be at the end of their contract or for a fee.

One such player is Ryan Christie. The winger has been linked with moves to Arsenal and Leeds in recent months, and judging by his recent form he wouldn’t be a great loss.

Christie has only scored once since October; that’s a run stretching as far as 24 matches. For a man who found the net on 20 occasions last term, it’s been a wretched season for the winger.

He is desperately out of form and nothing defines that more than his performance in the 1-0 defeat to Ross County. The attacker missed a succession of chances, blazing a woeful effort over the bar from just a matter of yards out. Clearly, his finishing has got worse.

The solution

Celtic have been touted with signing a few players this summer. Mohamed Elyounoussi has been linked with making a permanent switch to Glasgow while Robbie Brady is supposedly on their radar too.

Though, another player dreaming of a move to the Hoops is Johnny Russell.

The boyhood Celtic fan is currently playing in MLS for Kansas City but is still holding out for a switch to Parkhead. It remains to be seen whether he’s in Nick Hammond’s recruitment plans but if he does make the move, it could be disastrous for Christie’s Celtic career.

Russell, who has scored 27 goals for Kansas City, plays in a number of positions but they just so happen to be Christie’s strongest suits too.

The Scotland international has made a career of playing on the right of midfield – an area familiar to Christie – while he can also play on the left and as a centre-forward.

With that in mind, he could force the Celtic wide man out by taking his place in the squad. After all, he might offer the Bhoys more by way of not only goals, but also work rate.

Talking about his qualities when Russell was still at Derby, Gary Rowett commented: “I have seen as much of him as I have seen any of the players; I like what he’s about as a character. He works hard, plays for the team and has got quality.”

Russell is clearly dreaming big because he also has aspirations of making Scotland’s squad for the European Championships. He was rated highly by Gordon Strachan, a man who gave him his debut in 2014, but unfortunately, he’s not been seen in the squad since late 2019.

A move to Celtic would surely enhance his chances of regaining a place in the team. If he can dislodge a player like Christie too, it would raise eyebrows.

A proposta gerou polêmica.

Wolves starlet Fabio Silva let Nuno down against Aston Villa

Wolves suffered an agonising defeat in the West Midlands derby this afternoon as rivals Aston Villa managed to scoop all three points for themselves with a last gasp penalty.

The stats will certainly interest the neutrals – with a whole number of yellow cards dished out and both teams eventually being limited to ten men. But despite the Villans losing Douglas Luiz first, they managed to cling on and draw a penalty, which killed the game off in the fourth minute of injury time.

Joao Moutinho was the man given his marching orders for Wolves after a second yellow card offence, but one player who disappointed just as much as the midfielder was Fabio Silva.

Fabio Silva’s stats vs Aston Villa

With Raul Jimenez injured, the £80,000 per week summer signing has been propelled into the limelight and made just his second Premier League start for his new club today. Whilst the West Midlands derby was not a match Nuno Espirito Santo would have liked to deploy Silva up front, his hand was forced.

Unfortunately for the 18-year-old, he was kept silent by the Aston Villa defence, who limited him to just 12 accurate passes the entire game. The teen also failed to complete any dribbles and he mustered up just the one shot on target (via Sofascore).

Filling in for a clinical goalscorer like Jimenez is not an easy task, especially for a young up and coming player. Unfortunately, Silva was easy meat for the Villans this afternoon and he posed absolutely no threat to them in front of goal.

It will be a tough result to take after conceding a late penalty, but focus now shifts to Chelsea, where Nuno will hope to catch the attack-minded Blues on the counter-attack.

Orta must avoid Leeds swoop for Liverpool’s Harry Wilson

Leeds director of football Victor Orta could be about to walk the club into another nightmare with reports surfacing about one of his mooted targets…

What’s the word?

According to The Athletic’s Phil Hay, the Yorkshire giants still remain interested in Liverpool winger Harry Wilson with the Spaniard a big fan of his, although any potential deal isn’t close.

Whilst earlier this week, the Daily Mirror revealed that the Premier League champions weren’t going to sway from their £20m valuation amid interest from a whole host of top-flight teams, including the Whites.

They claim that Aston Villa are leading the charge despite only offering an initial £12m.

Another mistake?

It’s been widely reported that Marcelo Bielsa wants another winger amongst his squad with their interest in Rangers’ Ryan Kent well known too, but a £20m swoop for Wilson reeks of being another Jean-Kevin Augustin-like blunder.

The 23-year-old was part of the Bournemouth side that were relegated last season and although he bagged seven goals, he averaged a poor 0.5 dribbles and 0.5 key passes per game, via WhoScored, which isn’t good enough for a winger.

A fair majority of those strikes came from set-pieces too, perhaps not a surprise given Jurgen Klopp’s praise, back in December he said: “Each free-kick is a proper threat. We were never in doubt about Harry’s shooting abilities, his skills in that part of the game are incredible – world-class, for sure.”

Bielsa’s first-choice starters are likely to be Jack Harrison and Helder Costa, so Wilson is by no means guaranteed an instant shot, so at a whopping £20m it would certainly be a waste.

The Argentine should instead look to call upon a talented youngster like Ian Poveda who we managed to see a glimpse of at the back end of last season.

Instead, Orta and co are playing with fire and would certainly start to look brash in their spending – ala Fulham and Villa in recent seasons.
