Exclusive: Tony Cottee has been impressed by Sebastien Haller’s start at West Ham

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast ahead of the London Football Awards, Tony Cottee spoke of how impressed he has been by Sebastien Haller’s start at West Ham after he was signed from Eintracht Frankfurt during the summer.

The Frenchman arrived after the tumultuous relationship between the Hammers and Marko Arnautovic finally came to an end, with the club’s two-sentence farewell offering an insight into how frustrated the Austrian had left everyone during the final few months of his Irons career.

Despite the sourness between player and club, Cottee felt that it was important he was adequately replaced: “Marko was a player who was developed into a centre forward and he played that role very well, he was pacey and he was a good player, I enjoyed watching him at the club.

“It was probably right for him to move on and the question for West Ham was how do you replace a player like that?”

The eventual answer was to make a club-record move for Haller, who was coming off the back of a season in which he had more goal contributions than starts in the league, amassing 15 goals and nine assists in 23 Bundesliga starts and six substitute appearances, as per WhoScored.

The hefty price tag meant there were also large expectations, but Cottee has indicated that he hasn’t been disappointed so far: “The early signs are good in terms of Haller, he’s got four goals so far this year in the Premier League, which is a good return out of the first nine games.

He holds the ball up well, he’s good in the air, he’s a good finisher. He looks like a really good addition to the squad.

However, the former West Ham striker and England international feels Haller’s teammates can still do more to get the best out of him: “I think at times he’s been a little bit isolated up front, so he could do with a little bit of help, but I’ve been impressed.”

The signs are there that if players such as Felipe Anderson and Manuel Lanzini get close the 25-year-old more often, he will be able to bring them into the game, as he is already averaging 7.1 aerial duels won and 1.1 key passes completed per game.

West Ham are in concerning territory, having now failed to win in their last five games in all competitions, but Cottee appears to have faith that Haller will be able to help turn things around for the team.

Tony Cottee was speaking as a judge on The London Football Awards, due to take place on 5th March 2020 at Camden’s Roundhouse. Tickets are available from https://

Tottenham tracking Diego Llorente

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Tottenham Hotspur are tracking Real Sociedad defender Diego Llorente, per The Daily Mirror.

What’s the word?

The central defender has been with the Liga club since 2017, when he moved from Real Madrid.

However, the report states that Spurs, along with Leicester City and West Ham United, are tracking his progress in Spain.

Llorente, the Mirror claims, has a release clause of £45m.

Sanchez’s partner

Both Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen have contracts that expire in the summer.

It is not inconceivable to imagine that both players could leave the club and, if they do, Spurs will need a new defender to partner Davinson Sanchez, who Mauricio Pochettino reportedly plans to rebuild his defence around.

But, is Llorente good enough for such a responsibility and would he actually make a good partner for the Colombian international?

He has averaged 1.4 tackles per game in La Liga, per WhoScored, as well as 1.1 interceptions and 3.8 clearances, while also averaging a passing accuracy of 87.6%.

Sanchez, by comparison, averages 1.7 tackles, one interception and 3.3 clearances, with a passing accuracy of 88.4%.

Those are very similar numbers and there is not really a stand-out stat in that cluster from the Sociedad man to demonstrate a particular quality that would compliment Sanchez’s game.

Spurs have to seriously ask themselves the question as to whether Llorente can be that proper partner for Sanchez to help build the bedrock of a new defence and subsequently, the entire Tottenham team.

They have all season to continue scouting him and make that decision but, on first glance, the answer is not glaringly obvious and that should probably set off a few alarm bells.

Total Duds: Christopher Samba earned big bucks at QPR but offered little in return

This article forms part of our Total Duds feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how well a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how good of a deal the club managed to achieve.

Back in 2013, it was a case of needs must for Harry Redknapp and Queens Park Rangers. Heading into the business end of the season at the bottom of the Premier League table, the former Spurs and Portsmouth boss turned to the transfer market in a last-ditch attempt to buy the Hoops a way out of trouble.

Backed by the financial might that came with relatively new owner Tony Fernandes, Redknapp proceeded to break the club’s transfer record twice in a matter of weeks, by following up their £8m outlay on Loic Remy with a £12.5m splash on former Blackburn defender Christopher Samba.

It may have looked like a deal that made sense – Samba was a vastly experienced Premier League defender having spent six seasons at Blackburn – notching 18 times from the back in all competitions before leaving upon their relegation from the top flight.

Back in England to try and prevent QPR from suffering the same fate, Samba could not find the touch that had served his team so well in Lancashire – and it quickly became apparent that his hefty transfer fee and £100,000-a-week wages were going to waste.

Not that Samba was solely responsible for QPR’s eventual failures that year, but after collecting just Reading that ensured the team would be in the second tier the following season.

Things had arguably come to a head nearly a month earlier, when Samba delivered a poor performance against Fulham, following which he told his own fans to ‘get over’ the size of his wages after gifting their London rivals two goals, as a double from Dimitar Berbatov – recipient on both occasions – plunged the team deeper into the relegation mire.

And in a flash, he was gone. Less than three months into his career at Loftus Road, Samba had pulled on a QPR shirt for the last time, bowing out in a 2-0 defeat at home to Stoke City in April 2013.

After just last-place finish, it was over for Samba. Safe to say, it was not the wisest investment of Redknapp’s career, as his straw-clutching attempt to preserve QPR’s top-flight status turned out to be a rather expensive mistake.

Real Madrid’s loanee Martin Odegaard dropped a masterclass vs Deportivo Alaves

Real Madrid are definitely not short on extraordinary young talents within their squad.

The Galacticos actually have quite the supply of potential superstars with the likes of Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes leading the lines. But, there are more players that are bound to grace the spotlight in the not so distant future.

One of those talents is definitely Martin Odegaard, the 20-year-old Galactico currently on loan at Real Sociedad. And how do we know he’s bound to become one of the greats? Well, his numbers definitely don’t lie.

Real Sociedad’s player of the month for August has certainly continued his breathtaking ascent and is taking the La Liga stage by storm.

The latest proof that can attest to that statement is actually in the latest match he played for his new and temporary team. La Real faced off against Deportivo Alaves at home and Odegaard, for the lack of a better term, dropped a true masterclass. And this is not an overstatement by any stretch of the imagination.

The young 20-year-old midfielder assisted one of the three goals his team netted but that figure is actually pretty low considering he tallied a game-highest ten key passes on the night. That is just utterly ridiculous – the highest average in La Liga so far this season is Jose Campana with 3.7 per game.

Other than that, Odegaard also deployed four through balls, six crosses and managed an overall 84.1% passing accuracy. Interestingly enough, that wasn’t enough to warrant him the highest rating in the team, at least according to Whoscored who bestowed that honour on his teammate, Mikel Oyarzabal, having recorded two goals and one assist.

Even though the young Norwegian is still at the very beginning of his career with just 20 years on his back, suggesting he just might go on to establish himself as a superstar is becoming a less bold statement by the game.

In fact, at this very point in time, it looks likely to be true.

Still, let’s wait and see how he develops in the future but if he continues down this path, Real Madrid could have a place for him in the senior fold very soon.

Manchester United fans slam Fred after losing 1-0 to Newcastle

Some Manchester United fans have taken to Twitter to slam Fred, after the midfielder put in a dismal performance against Newcastle.

The 11-cap Brazil international was making his first Premier League start of the season against the Magpies, and he really wasn’t very good at all – to say the least.

The 26-year-old picked up a yellow card in the 3rd minute, and went on to play the full 90 minutes somehow.

He recorded no key passes, had no shots on target and completed no dribbles, while there was one moment where Andreas Pereira gently passed the ball to him and Fred’s touch saw it run out of play.

Just by watching the game, the former Shakhtar Donetsk man looked lost, while also seeming scared to pass the ball forward – he was simply terrible against Steve Bruce’s side.

Let’s take a look at what the United fans on Twitter have been saying about the £47m man…

Tottenham loanee Jack Clarke will be "fuming", says pundit Noel Whelan

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan believes that Tottenham Hotspur loanee Jack Clarke will be “fuming” at his treatment at Elland Road this season, per Football Insider.

What’s he said?

Clarke has yet to play for Leeds this season after being sent back to the club following his summer move to Spurs.

He was left out of the club’s matchday squad for the victory over Brentford earlier this week, with clubs in the EFL allowed just five loanees in their squad. Ben White, Helder Costa, Eddie Nketiah, Illan Meslier and Jack Harrison were all included, with Clarke the odd one out.

And Whelan believes that Clarke will be fuming to have missed out once again.

He said: “There is a bit of an issue there for Leeds.

“Someone has to forfeit a place on the bench because of the rule, and Jack Clarke is the one missing out.

“This is the choice of Marcelo Bielsa, and it’s something he is going to have to carefully manage. Clarke is a big weapon to have on the bench and is a brilliant player to be able to call upon when you’re chasing a game or opening up defences on the counterattack.

“If it was up to me, I would forfeit the use of the young goalkeeper Illan Meslier. A back-up keeper is only on the bench for a freak injury. It rarely happens, and Leeds are betting off having a matchwinner like Clarke.

“He will be fuming that he’s not being picked, and you can’t blame him for that. I can’t see it changing soon, unless one of the loan players gets injured.”

Spot on

Spurs will likely be fuming too.

Mauricio Pochettino rarely loans players out with the expectation of them coming back to the club at the end of the season; the likes of Josh Onomah, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Shayon Harrison were all sent away in 2018/19 and will not be a part of the squad in 2019/20.

Yet there had to have been an expectation that Clarke would have played, having spent last season at Elland Road, making his breakthrough and 26 appearances in all competitions.

If he is to stay at Leeds for the entirety of the campaign, Spurs and Clarke will be hoping that Bielsa remembers he exists.

If he doesn’t, his development is likely to stall.

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville banters Jamie Carragher

[ad_pod ]Ah, banter. The Manchester United-Liverpool rivalry runs deep so it’s hardly surprising that, even in a professional environment, ex-players can’t help but have a little dig once in a while.Watch Liverpool Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have long since hung up their respective red shirts. Now we can find them providing expert advice on just about anything football related, and for the most part, they’re able to subdue their innermost opinions and grace us with impartial analysis.

…until today.

All in the name of a good old nibble, we’re sure, former United captain Neville couldn’t but have a jab at Carragher’s latest piece of journalistic work: ‘Why Liverpool’s reliance on world-class Sadio Mane shows squad lacks attacking strength…’

Lest we forget that failed Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson once fielded a squad in 2011 which included Paul Konchesky, Sotiris Kyrgiakos and Joe Cole, with Christian Poulsen and Milan Jovanovic on the bench. So maybe Neville wasn’t too far wrong after all.

Sadio Mane is a great player though, we’ll give him that.

Crystal Palace suffer blow as Ciaran Clark move ruled out by Steve Bruce

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce appears to have poured cold water over reports that Crystal Palace were looking to sign Ciaran Clark before the transfer window shuts, and it should come as a major blow to the Eagles.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Sun reported on Monday that the south London outfit were hopeful of bringing the 29-year-old to Selhurst Park in either a £5m permanent move or a season-long loan deal, to provide competition for Mamadou Sakho and James Tomkins at the heart of the defence.

The Sun said at the time that it would be up to Bruce to decide whether he could afford to lose the centre-back, but his comments following the pre-season clash with Hibernian on Tuesday night suggest he has made his mind up.

Watch Crystal Palace Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

He told BBC Newcastle: “The way we are with the injury to Lejeune and playing with three centre backs, if I let something happen to Ciaran Clark, we’d leave ourselves a bit short. I can’t really do that… I’ve had a quiet word with him and we move on.”

Blow for Palace

Following injuries suffered by Tomkins and Sakho in the second half of 2018/19 that ruled both out at the start of pre-season, it was obvious the lack of depth that the club had in those central defensive positions with the likes of Jairo Riedewald and Martin Kelly starting in their absence.

The Eagles could do with a reliable back-up player who could provide competition for a starting spot, and the 6 foot 1 Republic of Ireland international would have been the ideal candidate.

The former Aston Villa man has 165 Premier League appearances to his name and plenty of experience in that respect, and whether he was bought for £5m or arrived on loan he would have been seen as something of a shrewd addition in the modern era of extortianate transfer demands and fees.

Circumstances could change of course, but as things stand it doesn’t appear as though Clark will be in a red and blue shirt anytime soon – Hodgson may have to turn his attentions elsewhere in a bid to bring a new centre-back to the club.
