Celtic: Hoops battling Fenerbahce for Ayew

Celtic are battling Turkish giants Fenerbahce in a bid to sign former Swansea City forward Andre Ayew.

The Lowdown: Ayew released

Ayew failed to earn promotion with Swansea last season, losing in the playoff final against Brentford at Wembley.

As a result, the Welsh club released the attacker, who was their top earner by some distance.

The versatile forward, who has scored 131 goals at club level during his career, is Swansea’s record signing after joining for £18m in 2018.

The Championship outfit won’t be receiving a fee for the Ghana international’s services, though, and it appears as if the Hoops now want to take advantage of Ayew’s availability.

The Latest: Hoops in the running

According to Turkish outlet Fotomac, cited by the Daily Record (11/06; 21:49), both the Hoops and Fenerbahce are pursuing a deal for the 31-year-old.

Wages are thought to be a key factor in Ayew’s next move, with a transfer fee not required.

The Verdict: McKay may need to break a club record

Ayew’s Swansea deal was thought to be worth a whopping £83,000-a-week – £60,000-a-week more than the club’s second-highest earner.

Celtic’s highest earner last season, excluding loanees, was Scott Brown on £23,000-a-week. He’s now with Aberdeen, so you’d expect CEO Dominic McKay would have to offer Ayew a club record-breaking contract to have a chance of securing the forward’s services.

From the outside looking in, it appears as if a deal may well be extremely hard to strike considering the scarcely believable wages he was on with a second-tier side.

However, with the Hoops undergoing a rebuild on and off the pitch, who knows, they could be willing to offer Ayew mega money to bring him to Parkhead and lead the new era. Only time will tell.

Bahutule dominates second day at Pune

Leaving a big impact on West Zone’s Duleep Trophy match against North Zone at Pune, Sairaj Bahutule hit a century and then snapped up four middle-order wickets to leave his opponents reeling at the end of the second day.Bahutule, who was unbeaten on 66 at the start of the second day, duly went on to reach three figures. He batted well with the tail, especially Irfan Pathan, who made 25 off 63 and extended much-needed support to Bahutule at the other end.The last wicket, that of Bahutule, fell with the score on 396, with North Zone conceding 100 runs to take out the final two batsmen. Bahutule fell to Nehra (3-70) after making 105 off 163 balls, with 17 fours and one six.North Zone started off their reply badly, finding themselves at 89 for four as Irfan Pathan took quick wickets at the top of the order. Although all top five batsmen got starts, they could not convert them into big scores. Batsmen continued to come and go, and North Zone were placed, at various stages of the innings, at 132 for six and 154 for seven. The highest scorer of the innings was off-spinner Sarandeep Singh. Sarandeep was unbeaten on 69 off 89 balls, with 11 fours, at the close of play, accompanied by Ashish Nehra, on 1 off 22 balls, at the crease. North Zone were 231 for eight at stumps, and West Zone look to have firm control of this match.

Fry hails Lampard amid Crystal Palace links - Exclusive

Peterborough United Director of Football Barry Fry has lauded Frank Lampard amid links with Crystal Palace.

The Eagles are continuing their hunt for a new boss in the wake of Roy Hodgson’s departure from the club.

Palace have yet to appoint anyone in the ex-England boss’s stead, despite links with a number of managers.

Indeed, it seemed that Nuno Espirito Santo would replace Hodgson but those talks have broken down, leaving the Eagles back at square one.

The Daily Mirror has reported previously that Lampard is subsequently back in the frame to take over, as he has been out of work since his sacking by Chelsea.

Fry is not sure if he would be willing to take over at Selhurst Park but he believes that he deserves an immense amount of credit for showing real faith in youth at both Stamford Bridge and Derby County.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “I’m not sure about Palace.

“Frank’s very good. When he went to Derby, he was very good at loaning three or four players that got Derby in the play-off final and to be fair to Frank, when he went back to Chelsea, he still played them young kids.”

Leeds’ Patrick Bamford was shocking again

After a superb run of results against the Premier League’s big boys, Leeds were brought crashing back down with a timid 2-0 defeat to Brighton on Saturday afternoon.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side had remained undefeated in clashes against Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United respectively, even earning a win against Pep Guardiola’s league leaders.

But against the Seagulls at the weekend, the Whites looked nothing like their usual energetic selves, having far fewer shots on goal than the home side, and just looking off the pace.

One man who Bielsa would certainly have been fuming at is Patrick Bamford.

The striker has been one of the shining lights of the Premier League season for the Yorkshire club, firing in 14 goals and providing another eight assists in the top-flight alone.

But lately, he has just gone completely off the boil, and his latest blank against Graham Potter’s side now means he has gone five matches without a goal.

It wasn’t just his shooting boots that were missing on Saturday, however, with his all-round game also virtually non-existent coming up against a formidable Brighton back-line who completely overwhelmed him.

As per Sofascore, his 15 touches and 11 successful passes were both far lower than what goalkeeper Illan Meslier even managed, and a damning statement on just how anonymous he was – the forward just got snuffed out by the Seagulls’ back-three.

He also failed to register a single shot on goal, something even defenders Diego Llorente and Luke Ayling did, while he won just one out of the measly two duels that he contested.

Bamford just couldn’t get himself involved in the game, and it wasn’t even that surprising that Bielsa decided to take him off before the hour-mark for Rodrigo.

And, writing in his post-match player ratings for Leeds Live, Beren Cross gave him a 4/10, adding: “Barely had a kick. As he was in the first game, he was swamped by the three centre-backs. The latest in a long line of frustrating matches for the striker with any Golden Boot hopes long gone.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Leeds transfer rumours and news!”]

Those thoughts were echoed by The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Graham Smyth who said: “No touches anywhere near the Brighton goal, no impact in the game. Much of that was down to a lack of service but he didn’t impose himself at all.”

Bielsa would have been livid with his centre-forward’s lack of involvement in the game, and would no doubt have been expecting far more from a player who has been leading the charge for Leeds this season.

Meanwhile, Leeds are eyeing a record-breaking move for this star…

Ex-NUFC ace makes takeover claim

Former Newcastle United winger Keith Gillespie has told Football FanCast that he is growing tired of constant talk surrounding the proposed takeover of the club.

The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia have been involved in protracted talks to buy the club.

That deal is currently going through arbitration in court but it has taken a fair few twists in recent days.

The Daily Mail have reported that the crown prince of Saudi Arabia personally lobbied Prime Minister Boris Johnson to intervene in the potential takeover.

Elsewhere, owner Mike Ashley has shut the club shop and is said to have sent a letter to staff claiming that the decision stems from the new ownership, again per The Daily Mail.

Gillespie, though, insists that the Magpies’ fans deserve better than to constantly be hanging on news reports, and seeing their excitement both grow and diminish as a result. Indeed, he is aware of how many proposed takeovers in previous years have fallen apart at the last hurdle.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, he said: “In terms of will there be a takeover? It’s not something I listen to too much now, because I’ve heard it too often.

“You get asked to comment on this quite a bit when there’s talk again. Until something is confirmed, Newcastle fans don’t deserve to be put through the mill every single time, because they’re so passionate about their club and they want this takeover to happen.

“They start to get a little bit of belief that they could be getting closer, and then bang, it falls apart again. I feel sorry for them in that way.

“For me, until there is something concrete and we are very, very close, it’s not something that Newcastle fans deserve people to be talking about, because we’ve seen in the past how often it’s just fallen apart.”
