Babar Azam ton, Usman Shinwari five-for crush Sri Lanka

SL could only fight in patches, most notably through the record sixth-wicket stand worth 177 between Jayasuriya and Shanaka

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando30-Sep-2019
Babar Azam struck an imperious first century on home soil to lead Pakistan to an imposing total, before Usman Shinwari and company had Sri Lanka five down inside 11 overs, to essentially seal a comfortable victory. Sri Lanka fought in patches, most notably through the record sixth-wicket stand worth 177 between Shehan Jayasuriya and Dasun Shanaka. But they lost too much ground in the rest of the match for even that partnership to mean anything. Chasing 306, they were all out for 238 in the 47th over.Shinwari finished with figures of 5 for 51, with Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz delivering cheap overs while taking a wicket apiece themselves. It was Babar’s 115 off 105 balls, though, that had set the game up for Pakistan – his 111-run partnership with Haris Sohail forming the centrepiece of their innings. It was the 11th century of Babar’s ODI career, his third against Sri Lanka, and third of his last 11 innings, with four half-centuries and two scores of over 40 having been hit through that period as well. That he’s a blinding limited-overs talent has been known for some years now, but in the last few months, Babar has suggested he is coming into a new, more-consistent period in his career. During the course of this innings, he crossed 1000 runs for this calendar year, in which he averages 62.41 after 19 innings. And on a flat surface, his batting always seemed effortless. Babar thumped his eleventh ball past mid-on to collect his first boundary, before launching Wanindu Hasaranga over the midwicket boundary next over. His striking would become more and more regal as the innings wore on, and in between the singles and twos would be effortlessly collected. He got to fifty with a sumptuous cover drive, off the 55th delivery he faced, and then raised the tempo. His most productive over was the 34th of the innings, when he hit legspinner Hasaranga for two sixes over long-on. The hundred was brought up with a boundary as well, a cut shot to the backward point boundary off the 97th ball he faced. He holed out in the death – one of four Pakistan batsmen to fall between the 40th and 49th overs. But he, along with Haris and also Fakhar Zaman, who had earlier struck a fifty and been involved in a 73-run opening stand, had provided Pakistan with an outstanding platform. Iftikhar Ahmed, playing his first ODI since 2015, did the most to capitalise on the top order’s work, hitting 32 not out off 20 balls, as Pakistan reaped 72 in their last seven overs.Sri Lanka’s collapse was so dramatic, they at one stage seemed a risk of being dismissed for below 78 – their previous lowest score against Pakistan. The chase had begun promisingly enough, with an elegantly cover-driven four first ball from Danushka Gunathilaka. But when Shinwari seamed one through the gate of Sadeera Samarawickrama in the fourth over, and Gunathilaka was out miscuing Amir to mid-on soon after that, they were already in despair at 22 for 2.It would get a lot worse very quickly. The score was still 22 when Avishka Fernando spooned Shinwari to mid-on to be out for seven-ball duck. It was 22 when new batsman Lahiru Thirimanne inside-edged a ball that nipped back at him to be caught behind later in that same Shinwari over. Oshada Fernando at least got himself off the mark, but that’s all he did, before he missed a straightening Imad Wasim delivery, and was rapped on the pad in front of the stumps. At 28 for 5, the chase seemed buried.Jayasuriya and Shanaka’s excavation act was steady, but never particularly slow – with both being busy batsmen. The risk-free singles and twos came first, before eventually they felt confident enough to venture occasional boundaries – both batsmen taking a liking to the legspin of Shadab Khan in particular. When Shanaka walloped two fours and a six in the space of three Shinwari deliveries in the 28th over, it seemed as if the pair were ready to begin making a concerted effort to bring down the required rate, which had crept up to well over eight by this point, but that was not the path they chose. They continued to build slowly, only occasionally hitting out to keep the required rate in single figures. They were not helped by one of the stadium’s light towers, which failed on two separate occasions just as the partnership seemed to be gaining some real momentum. Perhaps it wouldn’t have mattered either way, though. Despite the pair’s valiant efforts, they were still some distance from giving Pakistan a real scare. In the end, both batsmen fell in quick succession – Jayasuriya spurning a maiden international hundred when he edged Shinwari behind on 96. Shanaka fell for 68 early in the following over, with Sri Lanka still 101 runs short of the target. Hasaranga struck some late boundaries, but Pakistan had long sewn up the match.

Ex-USWNT coach Jill Ellis explains why 'ambitious' San Diego Wave sacked Casey Stoney just months after NWSL Shield triumph

San Diego Wave FC president and ex-USWNT coach Jill Ellis has explained why the club made the shock decision to sack Casey Stoney as manager.

Stoney departs San Diego WaveOnly signed a contract extension in JanuaryEllis opens up on decision to make changeWHAT HAPPENED?

San Diego Wave announced on Monday that Stoney had been sacked as manager after a tough start to the season and a run of seven games without a win. Stoney guided the club to a first NWSL Shield in 2023 and followed that up with a victory over NY/NJ Gotham in the 2024 NWSL Challenge Cup. However, a poor start to the campaign has cost Stoney, with the team currently down in ninth place in the table and already 17 points off the top.

AdvertisementGreg BartramTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Stoney's departure still came as a shock, particularly as she had signed a new contract at the club in January that ran until 2027. Ellis has now tried to explained the club's thinking, highlighting the team's ambitions for the future, but also insisting it had been a very tough call to part company with Stoney.

WHAT ELLIS SAID

Ellis told reporters: "Obviously it certainly wasn't an easy decision. I don't think there's ever a perfect time to make a decision to let someone go. I have the utmost respect for Casey and the contribution she's given to the club, and I think you read in our statement, we thanked her profusely for the foundation she's laid here in San Diego. I think results and statistics certainly give us information and currently we're 17 points out of first place and we are actually over halfway through the season.

"We are an ambitious club, we want to compete both domestically and internationally. Right now to qualify for the Champions League, the three criteria [are]: win the league, finish second in the league, or win the championship. Where we sit at the moment, we are limiting our opportunities, it's never all about numbers. It's also how it looks, how it feels, and for sure how it performs. In sport, we don't live in the past, it's how we perform in the moment. In this moment, we felt, and again it's very hard, an inflection point. So we made a very hard decision to try and begin a search for a new coach."

The search for a replacement is now underway with Paul Buckle set to serve as interim coach for the time being. Meanwhile, Stoney has admitted to being "broken" by the decision. She replied to a post thanking her for her efforts by a fan group on X with the message: "Today I’m broken but in time I will be proud of what we all achieved together! Cheer those players loud on Friday because that’s what they deserve."

Liverpool ready deadline-busting move for final "impressive" Klopp player

Within the space of a week, Liverpool's season has gone from being centred around a Premier League title race to becoming Jurgen Klopp's farewell tour. Along the way, the Reds will simply be hoping to headline with the act of picking up English football's biggest prize to hand their most successful manager in Premier League history the perfect ending.

Klopp could give those at Anfield a gift of his own, however, with Liverpool readying an approach to sign one final player under the German, according to reports.

Liverpool transfer news

With the cameras confirmed to be rolling behind the scenes in the remainder of Klopp's final season in charge, Liverpool could yet introduce some new characters. The January transfer window closes in just 24 hours, meaning that it would have to be a rapid move for those at Anfield to land a winter arrival, but that hasn't stopped the reports from coming in.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk has already been forced to clarify comments about his future at the club after an earlier interview was "taken out of context" from the Dutchman.

Staying put, Van Dijk looks likely to be around to welcome some fresh faces, potentially including a January arrival. According to reports in Germany, via TeamTalk, Liverpool are readying a "last gasp" approach to sign Max Beier from Hoffeinheim this month in what would be Klopp's final transfer at the club. The Reds aren't alone in their interest though, with Everton and Brentford also reportedly eyeing moves.

With such little time remaining in the window, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool will meet the forward's €35m (£30m) price tag, but it would certainly feel fitting that a Hoffenheim forward arrived at the end of an era just as Roberto Firmino once did in the final months of Brendan Rogers' tenure. If Beier arrived and reached anything close to the level that Firmino did, then Anfield is in for a treat.

"Impressive" Beier is the perfect parting gift

If Klopp and Liverpool are to land Beier this month, then not only would the young forward be the perfect last signing but also an ideal addition when it comes to adding depth in pursuit of the Premier League title. The Reds already have a stacked forward line, but an injury to Mohamed Salah has highlighted just how quickly things can change, even with Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz all available.

Beier's stats at just 21-years-old have been impressive, to say the least so far this season. The young German has scored seven goals and assisted a further five, making Liverpool's interest no surprise. DaveOCKOP – a Liverpool journalist – has certainly liked what he's seen too…

In what could be an interesting 24 hours, we could see Klopp welcome one final name before parting ways with the Reds this summer.

5/10 Leeds star was nearly Farke’s villain vs Preston

A match containing teams from Yorkshire and Lancashire is usually a feisty affair with lots of zest to it and Leeds United vs Preston North End on Sunday afternoon was no different.

Ahead within a minute, the visitors to Elland Road played valiantly throughout but perhaps let the emotion of the encounter get the better of them late on.

Daniel James nodded home Leeds' equaliser early in the first half but we had to wait until the death for Daniel Farke's men to secure a precious 2-1 win.

After a series of scuffles, firstly after Archie Gray had been shoved into an advertising hoarding by Robbie Brady and then Ryan Ledson's cynical tackle on Ilia Gruev, it sparked Elland Road and importantly, Leeds into life.

Brady came to the rescue late on to deny Patrick Bamford from finding the net but it was a last-gasp penalty that was to be Preston's undoing after the ball struck the arm of that man Ledson again.

Joel Piroe, goalless in his last five games, stepped up and plundered the ball home, sparking utter bedlam behind the goal.

This wasn't Leeds' finest performance of the season, far from it, but they found a way to get over the line. Some of those in white, however, shouldn't be spared of criticism. Georginio Rutter, so influential this term, failed to come up with the goods to trouble the Lilywhites.

Georginio Rutter vs Preston in numbers

Let's set the record straight. For the vast majority of the campaign to date, Rutter has been a sensation for Farke's side.

He has scored five goals and supplied nine assists from his 27 Championship outings but his powers have started to wane in recent months.

Leeds forward Georginio Rutter.

Indeed, after the win over Preston, Rutter has now failed to supply an assist in his last six league games while he has only found the net once in his last ten outings.

For Leeds who are chasing promotion, they need to start getting more from the 21-year-old. On Sunday afternoon, Rutter was unable to provide much creativity, notable only supplying one key pass in the entire match.

In fact, his passing was way off the mark all game, completing just 64% of his attempts. That led to the £36m signing ceding possession of the ball on 28 occasions. That's a mind-blowingly high number and one that surpassed his average of losing possession 17 times per match this term quite comfortably.

Now, this stat is traditionally always higher for players who take risks with their play and that must be accounted for here, but the fact of the matter is that Leeds barely had a hope of carving open regular chances with his lack of productivity.

Also winning just five of his 20 contested duels throughout the game, it's safe to say this was a "day of frustration" as Leeds Live reporter Beren Cross noted after handing him a 5/10 match rating.

His afternoon was perhaps best summed up not only by hitting the post but also by having been booked for diving, perhaps harshly. If that wasn't bad enough, an attempted backheel failed to come off on the edge of the area. Leeds were in the middle of a vibrant attacking phase of play when that happened, but his efforts only received groans from those in the crowd.

Leeds got away with it today but in the middle of a promotion hunt it doesn't matter how you play as long as you come away with three points. Despite Rutter's performance Farke's side got over the line and only increased the pressure on Southampton and Ipswich above them in second and third.

Almiron’s decision on Saudi transfer revealed as Newcastle agree deal

Newcastle United could sell a "unique" St James' Park hero in the January transfer window, following a fresh update from journalist Ben Jacobs.

Newcastle set to lose key players due to FFP

The Magpies have experienced a worrying period in the transfer market, with rumours of key outgoing players dominating news of potential incoming signings instead. Kieran Trippier's future has been a major talking point in recent days, with Bayern Munich keen on snapping up the 33-year-old before the end of the month. He is thought to be open to the idea of joining the reigning Bundesliga champions, although PIF do not appear keen to sell.

Meanwhile, striker Callum Wilson has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid in January, and while the Magpies have rejected the La Liga side's advances to date, it is another piece of business that could be completed in the coming weeks.

There has even been a recent rumour suggesting that Newcastle could be forced to sell both Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak in the near future, in order to comply with Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations, and now yet another player is on the chopping block.

Miguel Almiron set to leave Newcastle

Taking to X on Monday, Jacobs claimed that Miguel Almiron is now set to leave Newcastle this month, with an agreement reached with Al-Shabab.

dan-burn-miguel-almiron-newcastle-opinion

"Exclusive: Al-Shabab and Newcastle have reached a provisional agreement over Miguel Almiron. It's understood Almiron is open to the move, but the deal is not done yet."

This is a strange period for Newcastle fans to cope with, considering so many of their recent heroes are being linked with quickfire exits from St James'. Almiron is a player who it would be very sad to see move on this month, considering he has overcome a tough start to life with the Magpies, maturing into a key attacker player over time.

He scored 11 times in the Premier League last season, and while only three have come his way this term to date, he remains an important figure. Eddie Howe is clearly a big admirer of the 29-year-old, saying of him earlier in the campaign:

"He’s (Almiron) a unique footballer. I don’t think there’s anyone better at doing what he does – all energy, all action. I’d like to see his physical stats today because I’m sure they’d be through the roof. The quality he showed with his finish was very reminiscent of some of the goals he scored last year. It’s a great return to form for Miggy – he’s such an important player for us."

Newcastle's financial position does seemingly mean that sales are going to have to be made in January, and while Almiron still offers a huge amount to this side, he could be more expendable than the likes of Bruno and Isak, for example, with the pair both younger and more instrumental moving forward.

Eddie Howe personally wants to bring "future icon" striker to Newcastle

What a signing this could be for the Magpies.

ByHenry Jackson Jan 23, 2024

The hope is that nobody moves on, of course, with a number of exits acting as a blow to the Magpies' hopes of finishing in the European places, but the situation may be out of their hands.

Dec 21, 2023

The January window's opening is right around the corner, with manager Ange Postecoglou saying just last week that Tottenham are pushing hard for new mid-season signings.

A new central defender is thought to be the first priority for chairman Daniel Levy, technical director Johan Lange and the club's transfer chiefs. There have been many names already mentioned as Spurs targets ahead of January, including Nice's Todibo, while another who's repeatedly linked is Genoa star Radu Dragusin.

The Romania international has been a standout under Alberto Gilardino this term, and Fabrizio Romano says he could still make a move to the Premier League, despite a proposed new contract.

Reports from Italy are claiming that a Spurs bid is imminent for Dragusin, while the player's own agent Florin Manea has publicly stated that there has been discussions in north London.

“The people from Genoa know (that he will soon leave),” Manea explained to Fanatik recently.

"I have been in London for some time and have almost weekly meetings with important teams. We are getting closer. I spoke with Newcastle, with Arsenal, with Tottenham. I also have the messages with them, conversations. There are teams that ask.

Tottenham in "pole position" for Dragusin

Now, another report from Italy has shared some information on the 21-year-old and his possible move to N17.

It is believed Tottenham are in "pole position" to sign Dragusin in January, and Genoa could even let him go for as little as £22m.

Atalanta are very keen to bring him through the door, as he is seen as perfect for them, but Spurs' presence in the race looks likely to scupper their chances of signing Dragusin as things stand.

This is all according to newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, via Sport Witness, which backs claims from Dragusin's agent that he is a very popular player in England.

Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig has perhaps suggested why on X (formerly Twitter) in the past, previously likening the centre-half to Mats Hummels and calling Dragusin a "dominant" defender.

"Ridiculous" – Goldbridge fumes at Premier League news involving Everton

Everton recently felt the full force of the Premier League when they were handed a 10-point deduction for breaching Financial Fair Play rules. The deduction put them back in the relegation zone, two points adrift of safety, and undid all of Sean Dyche's excellent work in the last month or so. Ready to go again after the international break, the former Burnley boss must simply pick up where he left off and guide the Toffees back on course for safety.

The off-field news hasn't stopped there, though, with Everton playing their part in even more Premier League controversy which has left many frustrated, including talkSPORT host Mark Goldbridge, who shared his thoughts.

Goldbridge criticises "ridiculous" Everton decision

The Premier League really never stops delivering drama, particularly after Everton's point deduction amid the ongoing investigation into Manchester City. On top of that, however, clubs have voted for and against transfers between related-party clubs. A ban on such transfers would leave the likes of Chelsea unable to deal with Strasbourg and Newcastle United unable to sign players from PIF-owned clubs. Meanwhile, if 777 Partners complete their takeover of Everton, they would have been unable to deal with the likes of Genoa and Hertha Berlin.

In the end, those aforementioned clubs needn't have worried, as the Premier League did not get enough votes in favour of a transfer block, with Everton, Newcastle United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Sheffield United, Nottingham Forest, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burnley voting against a ban on loans, according to Craig Hope of the Daily Mail.

Goldbridge reacted to the news of the vote, posting on X: "Ridiculous 7 Prem clubs voted against that loan between owned clubs deal."

Everton's potential advantage after the vote

The vote once again brings forth the question as to whether the Premier League needs an independent regulator rather than relying on the clubs to come to a decision. In the end, clubs in favour of the transfer block were just two votes away from it taking place, yet it is the eight clubs who voted against the block that will now benefit. It came as little surprise that Everton were among those, too.

The Toffees are currently the subject of an ongoing attempted takeover by 777 Partners. 777 Partners' portfolio includes seven other clubs and the advantage that Everton could now have is the ability to negotiate with those other clubs with far more ease, given their clear link. This could result in loan deals to and from sides such as Standard Liege and Hertha Berlin, as Dyche looks to strengthen his side.

777 Partners at Everton's Goodison Park.

If 777 Partners do complete their takeover of the club and it is all wrapped up by January, then Everton will certainly be an interesting side to keep an eye on when it comes to transfer activity. Those at Goodison Park could have the chance to welcome a number of reinforcements.

Arsenal could sign "ridiculous" £80m star who’s a Rice & Odegaard hybrid

Since Arsenal lost Granit Xhaka in the summer transfer window, a rather large hole has been left behind in Mikel Arteta's midfield.

The Swiss was a force of nature in the middle of the park for the Gunners last term, recording career-best figures as the club nearly won the title.

In total, Xhaka found the net on nine occasions and even registered seven assists for his troubles. Since moving on, he is yet to find the net in Bayer Leverkusen colours but he has been part of a Xabi Alonso side who are yet to lose a single game this term, as they sit pretty at the top of the Bundesliga.

granit-xhaka-arsenal-transfer-manchester-city-yaya-toure-arteta

On the flip side, Arsenal also sit top of the Premier League. In that regard, Xhaka isn't missed but they do miss a potency from central areas that they had last term.

How Arsenal can fix Xhaka's absence

Arsenal moved swiftly in the summer to secure the services of £65m Kai Havertz but it hasn't gone according to plan yet for the German who has scored just three times since arriving.

Greener pastures have emerged in the last week – Havertz scored against Brentford and Lens – but he still has a great deal to do in order to repay that summer fee.

As such, another midfielder is being targeted ahead of 2024. That happens to be Aston Villa's Douglas Luiz.

At the beginning of November, outlet TEAMtalk revealed that he is one of Edu's top targets, although Arsenal may well have to cough up £80m to lure him to the Emirates Stadium, as per another report from the same publication.

The Gunners have tried previously to sign Luiz, notably submitting three bids in 2022, one of which was a £25m offer that was rejected on transfer deadline day that summer.

Douglas Luiz's style of play

Luiz is seemingly the perfect type of player to fill the Xhaka void in the middle of Arsenal's midfield.

Capable of dictating play from deep and breaking up the play, he offers certain elements of the game that Declan Rice has so successfully brought to Arsenal after his £100m move from West Ham.

Douglas Luiz celebrates for Aston Villa

However, Luiz's qualities in the final third also evoke memories of Xhaka and indeed Martin Odegaard.

Stats-based website FBref actually notes that Rice is one of the most similar players in the Premier League to the Brazilian. That can be seen in a certain array of defensive metrics.

#1 Bruno Guimaraes

#2 Christian Eriksen

#3 Pascal Gross

#4 Conor Gallagher

#5 Rodri

#6 Enzo Fernandez

Indeed, in the defensive and middle thirds of the pitch, the two make a very similar number of tackles per 90 minutes while they boast a similar number of touches each match, highlighting the regularity with which they are involved in proceedings.

Furthermore, their passing lines are alike, with the total distance of their passes and completion rate not too dissimilar.

andre-declan-rice-liverpool-opinion

Then, when it comes to the offensive side of the game, Luiz ranks closely to Odegaard for certain metrics. This term, their expected goals per 90 tally is exactly the same and they're both highly involved in general shot-creating actions – that counts passes, take-ons or fouls that consequently lead to a shot on goal.

For context, Rice makes 1.72 per 90 to Luiz's 3.71 and Odegaard's 4.86. You can clearly see, therefore, how the Brazilian “warrior” as he was labelled by broadcaster Jack Grimse, has the best of both Arsenal stars.

Signing such a player, who has also been lauded for his "ridiculous" ability by journalist Sam Tighe, would be a big capture.

Arsenal like to sign players from the Premier League; you only need to look at the business they've done this year to notice that and Luiz simply has to be the next.

He not only fills the Xhaka void but he could add an extra glue and offensive verve that takes Arsenal to another level. At £80m, it might be worth the hit.
