Smith, Maxwell lead Australia dominance

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details4:41

Manjrekar: Very uncharacteristic innings from Maxwell

Test hundred number 19, nine of them made overseas, was a measure of the quality Australia’s captain Steven Smith has brought to Ranchi to give his team a chance of unseating India at home. Ball number 147, kept out by Glenn Maxwell in the day’s final over, was a measure of the resolve he brought to his first Test innings in nearly three years.Previously, the most deliveries Maxwell had faced in any international innings across all three formats was 98. By stumps, his new personal mark not only showed how much he had steeled himself to contribute alongside Smith, but also put Australia in a very strong position to dictate terms on what is comfortably the best pitch prepared for this Border-Gavaskar Trophy bout. When Maxwell joined Smith, the day had hung rather more in the balance. Umesh Yadav was reversing the ball sharply, and the 28-year-old Victorian’s propensity for batting brainstorms was recalled by many watching. Yet with Smith’s counsel, Maxwell was able to avoid his usual rush, so much so that he waited until his 56th delivery to reach the boundary – this from a man whose most significant moment for Australia had been a World Cup hundred off 51 balls against Sri Lanka at the SCG in 2015.What followed was a certain acceleration, but nothing too outlandish. The day’s viral video moment was instead saved for Wriddhiman Saha’s attempt to glove a Ravindra Jadeja ball lodged between Smith’s padded legs, so desperate had India’s search for a wicket become. The attempt proved fruitless, and Smith was soon toasting his century, and with Maxwell, walked off boasting a wicketless final session, an unbeaten stand of 159, and the promise of more to come.Their concentration and discipline made for a contrast to some of the more wasteful dismissals seen earlier in the day, as the Australian top order failed to make the most of their starts. David Warner and Matt Renshaw would be particularly frustrated to have wasted starts on a surface that played far better than widely predicted.Peter Handscomb also got established at the crease before being defeated by a fine inswinging yorker from Yadav, the most threatening member of India’s bowling attack. Ishant Sharma had a couple of concerted lbw appeals denied, but R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja found far less assistance than they had seen in Pune and Bengaluru. Pointedly they missed Virat Kohli, who left the field for treatment after landing heavily on his right shoulder when trying to stop a boundary.Glenn Maxwell’s fluency grew as his innings progressed, finishing with an unbeaten 82•AFP

Ranchi’s pitch played far better than appearances had suggested, meaning plenty more runs will be required. But at the very least, Smith and Maxwell have ensured something to bowl at for a team featuring another cricketer making a long-delayed return to the Australian Test team – the fast bowler Pat Cummins.Kohli conceded the loss of a key toss before play began, and that seemed more so as Renshaw and Warner rattled to 50 in less than 10 overs by taking advantage of the pitch’s even pace and a scorchingly fast outfield. Jadeja erred on the full side to Warner, but a full toss found the batsman in two minds about hitting square or straight, and the resultant return catch maintained his mediocre overseas record.Renshaw had been finding gaps either side of the wicket and looked in full control, so it was a surprise when he fiddled in undisciplined fashion at Umesh and edged to Kohli at first slip. Umesh had created uncertainty by gaining some movement. Shaun Marsh was unable to get established, well caught at short leg by Cheteshwar Pujara off bat and pad, the decision made after India’s successful DRS referral against Ian Gould’s initial not-out verdict.Handscomb’s cover drive off his first ball to the fence underlined the improved batting conditions, and though Smith edged one reversing ball from Umesh to the fine leg boundary between his pads, shortly before lunch, he was otherwise certain in his methods and safe in his defence. Handscomb also looked capable of going on to something substantial, but for the fifth time in as many innings this series he was dismissed at a frustrating juncture, unable to get his bat to a Umesh yorker that swerved back sharply to strike him in front of the stumps.Maxwell’s likely approach had seemed a mystery to even his team-mates before this match, but he quickly showed an impressive level of composure to build his innings in Smith’s slipstream while taking few risks. His only moment of nervousness came from the first ball of an Ishant spell that swung back into his pads, but India’s decision referral was waved off when replays showed the bowler had overstepped. In the evening session a steady stream of runs came with the occasional boundary, and Maxwell hammered a second six of his innings to go past 50 for the first time in a Test. Nothing affected Smith’s deep concentration, not even a period of more than an hour spent in the 90s. As attentive, mature batting partners do, Maxwell took up much of the scoring slack during this episode. Like so much else in his innings, it came as a pleasant surprise.

Aston Villa Considering Bid To Sign £22m La Liga Dynamo

An update has emerged on Aston Villa and their plans to bolster their attacking options in the summer transfer window…

What's the latest on Ferran Torres to Aston Villa?

According to reports in Spain, the Villans are weighing up a bid to sign Barcelona winger Ferran Torres ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

The report claims that the club could make an offer to sign the Spain international on loan until the end of next season with an option to sign him permanently for €25m (£22m).

However, it states that the La Liga giants are not tempted by a temporary deal at this moment in time and that the player is not desperate to leave the club.

Although, it is said that the situation could change if Villa offer more money, or it becomes clear that the ex-Manchester City man will not be getting desirable game time next term.

This comes off the back of the club closing in on a deal to sign Pau Torres from Villarreal on a permanent basis, with Monchi and Unai Emery now plotting a second raid on La Liga.

Where would Ferran Torres fit in at Aston Villa?

The 23-year-old ace is a versatile forward who is capable of playing across the frontline but his predominant position is on the right flank, which could be bad news for Bertrand Traore this summer as it may leave him without a place in the squad.

Emery opted to bring the Burkina Faso international back to the club after a loan spell with Basaksehir in Turkey during the January transfer window, and he made eight Premier League appearances in the second half of the season.

The 27-year-old, who has played on the right wing for the majority of his career, scored two goals and failed to create a single 'big chance' for his teammates in that time, while he averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.71.

This came after the former Chelsea prospect averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.64 across nine league outings for the Villans the previous season, in which the dud did not score a single goal or create any 'big chances'.

Barcelona winger Ferran Torres.

Torres, meanwhile, scored eight goals and conjured 15 'big chances' across 54 La Liga outings for Barcelona between the 2021/22 and 2022/23 campaigns.

The exciting attacker, whose production was hailed as "exceptional" by Pep Guardiola, also found the back of the net nine times and assisted three goals in 28 Premier League appearances for City during his time in England.

This is particularly impressive when you consider that Ollie Watkins (15) was the only Villa player with more than six goals in the division last term.

These statistics suggest that Torres has the potential to provide more quality than Traore in the final third in terms of scoring and creating goals from a position on the right wing.

The Barcelona attacker is also four years younger than the current Villa wizard and would therefore offer more to the club in the long term, which could result in Emery ditching the former Lyon man in favour of Torres – immediately and in the future.

Man United Interested In Signing 19 y/o "Hurricane"

Manchester United are interested in signing teenage forward Adama Bojang, according to Fabrizio Romano.

What’s the latest transfer news on Man United and Bojang?

The Red Devils and Erik ten Hag have made a new forward one of their transfer priorities this summer, with Wout Wegorst’s loan spell coming to an end.

Anthony Martial’s future is also up in the air, which could leave Ten Hag with no senior striker on the books ahead of the 2023/24 season.

A number of marquee names have been linked with a move to Old Trafford, including Harry Kane. Reports have suggested that Man United could be tempted back into a move for the Tottenham star if they lower their £100m asking price to £80m.

Meanwhile, there has been speculation that Man United are in the lead to sign Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos, and alongside a proven high-profile attacking addition, it looks as if a lesser-known final third name is also on the agenda.

Romano took to Twitter in the last 48 hours to share an update he’s heard on Bojang. He revealed that those at Old Trafford are “now showing interest” in signing the “huge talent”, however, German sides Eintracht Frankfurt and RB Leipzig are also keen alongside French outfit Strasbourg.

“Manchester United are among clubs now showing interest in Gambia 2004 born talent Adama Bojang.

“Understand Eintracht Frankfurt and RB Leipzig are pushing to close deal for Bojang, considered a huge talent. Strasbourg are also monitoring the situation.”

Erik ten Hag

Who is Adama Bojang?

Bojang is just 19 years of age and is an out-and-out centre-forward who plies his trade for Steve Bicko FC in The Gambia.

Standing at 6ft 3, he has been nicknamed “The Gambian Hurricane” and an absolute physical specimen in the media, blessed with both speed and strength. Bojang has also been praised for his good anticipation skills and composure when presented with chances in the box, drawing slight comparisons to Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.

He appears to be catching the eye all across Europe, so a move to Manchester could be a shrewd one by Old Trafford officials, and by the looks of things, it could be another to monitor over the coming months.

Bowlers give Khulna another victory; Comilla still winless

Khulna Titans produced another good death-bowling performance to go to the top of the table as they beat the Comilla Victorians by 13 runs

Khulna Titans moved to the top of the points table with a 13-run win over Comilla Victorians, who have now lost their first three matches in the Bangladesh Premier League. It took another collective performance from Khulna’s bowlers to get over a batting collapse that gave them a modest total.Comilla, on the other hand, would feel that they let go of a great chance having fought back to restrict Khulna to 144 for 9 in 20 overs. Their chase never found rhythm, especially after Marlon Samuels fell in the 14th over. Rashid Khan and Sohail Tanvir – who had taken 3 for 19 earlier – tried to resurrect the chase in the death overs, but weren’t quite up to it.Samuels, who made 30 off 34 balls with two fours and a six, held the ace in Comilla’s chase but he was undone by a Shafiul Islam delivery that kept low and got through his defense. They were reduced to 86 for five, after Liton Das, Imrul Kayes, Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Ashar Zaidi had thrown away their wickets by needlessly playing across the line.Earlier, Khulna had racked up 92 for 1 at end of the tenth over, but couldn’t make best use of the start. Comilla’s bowlers held them back, conceding just 29 runs in the last five overs.Andre Fletcher and Hasanuzzaman, Khulna’s third opening pair in four matches, gave them their highest first-wicket partnership. They found boundaries regularly as they put on 45 in 4.4 overs, before Fletcher skied Mashrafe Mortaza after making 23 with three fours and a six.Hasanuzaman, in the meantime, struck fours through square-leg, covers, over point and even one over the keeper via a top-edge. He was Mashrafe’s third victim of the evening, being flummoxed by a slower ball after top-scoring with 37 off 30 balls.Nazmul Hossain Shanto, then got the wicket of Mahmudullah with his part-time offspin, after the Titans captain played a reverse sweep early in his innings and ended up getting caught at point. Shanto then got Alok Kapali, reducing Khulna to 117 for 5 in the 16th over. Comilla had dried up the boundaries in the last five overs at that point, until Kevon Cooper, sent in – curiously – at No. 8, struck a four and six. He hardly got strike in the last over, as he was dismissed for 11 off the last ball of the innings. However, he came good with the ball and conceded only 16 off his four overs. He was one of the three Khulna bowlers who collectively conceded only 16 in the last three overs of the Victorians’ chase.

Man City Keeping £86m-Rated Player On Transfer Radar

Manchester City are still keeping a close eye on Josko Gvardiol it seems, with a report from 90min stating that the club had representatives in Germany at the weekend to watch the defender in action.

Are Manchester City signing Josko Gvardiol?

The RB Leipzig man has impressed once more in the Bundesliga this season, featuring in 2,171 minutes of action for the side so far in the domestic league. He also has an average WhoScored rating of 6.67 in the competition, which only places him 11th in the squad in terms of average score, but given he is still just 21 years old, his level of consistency and the trust his manager clearly has to pick him regularly speaks volumes.

josko-gvardiol-transfer-arsenal-gabriel-magalhaes-arteta-edu

His showings have also led to the defender being entrusted to help his country, Croatia, on the biggest stage of them all. He was a first-team regular for the side at the World Cup, and rather than let the occasion pass him by, Gvardiol ended up emerging as one of the standout players in the tournament. He played seven games in that competition and had a rating of 6.97 – his best score in any competition this season.

The Leipzig man is still playing some superb football on the big stage and it seemingly hasn't gone unnoticed elsewhere. Premier League side Man City look like they are still monitoring the 21-year-old closely, with 90min reporting that the club had representatives watching him in action against Bayern Munich as his team defeated the reigning German champions, and that he remains on the radar of Pep Guardiola's side.

Will Josko Gvardiol complete a deal this summer?

The defender has become hot property with the way he has handled himself for club and country. Man City still seem to be keen on the player and if they did want to add another centre-back to their team, they could arguably do a lot worse than Gvardiol this summer.

With 1.1 interceptions on average per game in the Bundesliga this season, the player ranks third in his side in that category. It shows that despite his relative inexperience, he already has a good understanding of the game and can pick out and predict where opposition players are going to pass the ball and break things up for them. He also ranks third for clearances, so City could be getting themselves a brick wall at the back if he was able to replicate his Leipzig form in the Premier League.

In addition, he's also been called "elite" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig. Having seen plenty of players in the game, that is certainly high praise indeed. Whilst he is likely to be expensive, with CIES Football Observatory suggesting that is worth around €100m (£86m), it could be a worthwhile investment considering his potential and how much he can already offer to a team.

City therefore have every right to keep an eye on him and should certainly do so, as if they want to add some more solidity to their backline, Gvardiol certainly appears to tick those boxes for the club.

Man United In Pole Position To Sign £172k-p/w PSG Star

Manchester United are now the "front runners" to sign PSG right-back

Achraf Hakimi this summer, according to Football Insider.

Will Manchester United sign a right-back?

The Red Devils looked almost certain to be in the market for a right-back earlier this season, with Sky Sports revealing the club were open to offers for Aaron Wan-Bissaka almost as soon as Erik ten Hag arrived at the club.

The Dutchman clearly preferred Diogo Dalot in that position, and although the former Crystal Palace starlet has forced his way back in during recent weeks, the manager may well stick to his guns and hunt for a more comfortable ball-playing full-back this summer.

Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot.

Reports in March claimed Old Trafford chiefs could actually attempt so swap Dalot for Netherlands star Denzel Dumfries, and now it seems Hakimi is on the transfer shortlist as well.

According to FI, United have moved ahead of Chelsea in the race to sign Hakimi due to the fact that the Blues will not be able to offer Champions League football. Both teams are "prepared to move for the 24-year-old defender at the end of the season after Paris Saint-Germain made it clear that they are open to offers", but it is the M16 outfit who are currently out in front and willing to meet his £60m price tag.

Would Hakimi be a good signing for Man United?

The Morocco international, currently earning £172k-p/w in Paris, certainly has what it takes to inject a bit more end product than has been provided by Dalot and Wan-Bissaka, racking up nine direct goal involvements in 36 appearances in all competitions this season.

For comparison, Aaron Wan-Bissaka only has 13 goal contributions during his whole career at Old Trafford.

According to FBRef, he ranks highly across Europe's top leagues in terms of important attacking metrics like assists, progressive passes, carries and succesful take-ons, drawing praise as a world-class player from legendary full-back Dani Alves.

The defender has however recently been the subject of a bizarre story involving his personal life, with everyone from UFC superstars to controversial social media personality Andrew Tate praising his actions in an apparent divorce settlement, while other rumours swirl suggesting the entire saga has been fabricated.

Still, assuming that cloud over his personal life is nothing serious enough to affect his actions on the pitch, Hakimi looks like he would be an excellent signing to really kick-start Ten Hag's new era at Manchester United.

West Ham Miss Their ‘Extraordinary Star

Recent defeats to Liverpool and Crystal Palace have seen West Ham slip perilously close to the drop zone.

The East London outfit are only five points above 18th-placed Leicester, who play fellow relegation candidates Everton at the King Power Stadium this evening.

The Hammers are crying out for some quality and attacking exuberance to help ease their woes, and the diminutive Dimitri Payet would be the perfect difference-maker to help David Moyes if he were still in England.

How did Dimitri Payet fare at West Ham?

The forward signed for the Irons in 2015 under Slaven Bilic for a reported fee of £10m and is arguably their most talented player since the turn of the millennium.

In a stunning debut season in England, the magician registered 21 goal contributions in 30 league appearances and was named as the Premier League Player of the Year at the 2016 London Football Awards.

The former Marseille star was also shortlisted for the PFA Players’ Player of the Year Award and became the 38th recipient of the West Ham Player of the Year Award.

He continued this sensational form into his season and remained the club’s most enigmatic and influential force.

West Ham’s controversial move to the London Stadium was softened by this magisterial playmaker, who produced a host of era-defining moments.

In September 2016, Watford was the unlucky opposition who were on the end of one of the most outrageous assists in top-flight history – an audacious and pinpoint rabona that was emphatically headed home by Michail Antonio.

One month later against Middlesbrough, the winger was at it again and intricately weaved around five helpless defenders, before he angled a cute finish into the bottom corner.

Dimitri-Payet-goal-against-Middlesbrough

The 38-cap international merged stunning skill with ruthless end-product and was described as “extraordinary” by Kingsley Coman.

A throwback to the days of Payet is a painful and poignant reminder of how things used to be.

One attacker, who has failed to even moderately mirror the form of his positional peer, is Said Benrahma.

Jacob Steinberg has been heavily critical of his form and said: “A special mention for Benrahma. That miscontrol on the edge of the Palace area in the 93rd sums him up. It’s just a constant lack of discipline and focus. Such an underwhelming player, not worthy of the hype he gets.

“Added to that is a constant lack of positional discipline, a lack of pace, a lack of strength, repeated unreliability in promising situations. Fine if he’s a squad player but he’s a £30m starter in his third season in the PL.”

This is a chastening condemnation for the Algerian, whose inconsistency and unpredictability will have Hammers fans reminiscing the days when they had that tricky Frenchman terrorising defences on a weekly basis. If only he was around now to wreak havoc and save Moyes' men from their relegation battle.

Abramovich Wasted £85m On Diabolical Chelsea Striker

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made a rare appearance from the bench in Chelsea's 2-0 defeat against Brentford on Wednesday night and failed to win over the fans with his performance, heading over from the Blues' best chance of the game.

How has Aubameyang performed at Chelsea?

The Gabon international has been completely ostracised since his £12m move from Barcelona last summer, with attitude and performance issues seeing him dropped by Graham Potter, and completely left out of the Champions League squad for the knockout stages.

However, Todd Boehly could still recoup some of his money on the former Arsenal man, as despite a record of three goals in 20 appearances for the west London outfit, Barcelona are said to be interested in bringing him back to the Nou Camp this summer.

Chelsea have struggled desperately in front of goal this season, with just 30 goals in 32 Premier League games, and while the 33-year-old was signed for his experience and goalscoring record, the blame cannot be solely put on him.

He has featured in one of the worst Chelsea sides in recent memory whereas the failed strikers of old, notably Andriy Shevchenko and Romelu Lukaku, have struggled to succeed in a time of relative success.

However, in terms of value for money, it is arguably Fernando Torres who must be considered the worst striker of the Roman Abramovich era at Stamford Bridge.

Why did Chelsea sign Torres?

Torres was one of the biggest names in the Premier League, having performed superbly for Liverpool following his arrival from Atletico Madrid in 2007.

He would go on to contribute 81 goals and 20 assists in just 142 appearances for the club, with a memorable performance in a 3-0 thrashing of Real Madrid seeing him earn "world-class" praise from teammate Steven Gerrard.

Spain won the World Cup in 2010, but it was a 'dreadful, scoreless tournament' – as per journalist Ian Ladyman – for the attacker. Sadly, his form post-South Africa wasn't great either, managing just nine goals in the first half of the 2010/11 campaign, with Jamie Redknapp less than impressed with his form at the time.

He said: "Fans will suffer to a certain extent when you give the ball away, but they won't suffer a lack of effort. Out there for 45 minutes today, he (Torres) has been terrible. He hasn't got hold of the ball, he hasn't chased, he's got frustrated, he could have been booked, he's been diabolical."

It was perhaps made it even more surprising that Chelsea were so keen to sign him in January 2011, as the Blues shelled out a British record transfer fee of £50m to sign the clinical forward, with chairman Bruce Buck, who worked alongside Roman Abramovich during his time as owner, singing the striker's praises upon his arrival.

He said: "This is a very significant day for Chelsea, capturing one of the best players in the world with his peak years ahead of him.

"We have long admired the talents of a player who is a proven goalscorer in English football and Fernando's arrival is a sign of our continuing high ambitions. I hope every Chelsea fan is as excited as I am with this news."

While £50m seems like a drop in the ocean for Boehly given the money he has spent since taking over at Chelsea, in today's money that would equate to around £70m due to inflation.

How did Torres perform at Chelsea?

Unfortunately, Torres was never able to replicate the form he showed at Liverpool and endured some awful moments in a Chelsea shirt, with his notable open-goal miss against Manchester United perhaps symbolic of the low-confidence player that he had become at Stamford Bridge.

In total, the Atletico Madrid academy graduate would manage just 45 goals in 172 appearances for Chelsea, never reaching double figures in the Premier League again.

Although he did enjoy some success with the Blues, winning the Champions League, FA Cup and Europa League, contributing the famous breakaway goal against Barcelona, he certainly wasn't able to justify his price tag or eye-watering £175k-per-week wages in his time at the club.

Eventually, Chelsea would lose faith in Torres and he was sent on loan to AC Milan, before his move there was made permanent without the Serie A side having to pay a fee in January 2015.

The Spaniard was contracted at Stamford Bridge for 205 weeks, meaning that the club paid him £35m in wages in his four-year stay, well and truly rinsing the club of around £85m, before eventually leaving for nothing.

Therefore, while Aubameyang has been the scapegoat in a poor season for Chelsea, he cannot even be compared to Torres when it comes to value for money at Stamford Bridge. His move was the very definition of a financial disaster.
