Injury forces Kirby retirement

Steve Kirby, the Somerset fast bowler, has announced his retirement due to an ongoing shoulder injury.Last winter Kirby underwent surgery but after returning to action earlier this season he aggravated the injury during a second team game.”It has come as a real blow to me to have to retire from the game that I have been involved with for the past 20 years of my life,” Kirby said. “It’s been a difficult winter having gone through two operations. Dealing with setbacks is always part of professional sport but sometimes no matter how hard you try to recover, things are just taken out of your control.”Kirby made his first-class debut for Yorkshire in 2001 and such was his impact during that first season, as he took 47 wickets at 20.85, that he was mentioned in dispatches for a hurried call-up into the England side to face Australia. As it was he never reached international level, but he did represent England Lions. His best season came in 2003 when he claimed 67 wickets 26.40 which included his career-best 8 for 80. In 2005 he moved to Gloucestershire and in 2009 took 64 at 22.18 before moving to Somerset in 2011.He was also known as a feisty competitor and as known for the occasional interesting sledge such as when he told Michael Atherton “I’ve seen better batters in my fridge”.”I may be retiring from first class cricket but I hope to remain involved with the game at some level in a coaching capacity as I would love to be able to give something back to this wonderful game that has been so good to me over the years,” Kirby said.”I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those people that have helped me through my career, I would like to mention them by name but there have been so many to whom I am very grateful, and in particular the Somerset supporters who have made me feel so welcome in my time here at the club.”

Alexei Kervezee’s 110 and 99 from Moeen Ali put Worcestershire well on top at stumps on day three of their Championship clash with Derbyshire at New Road. Former Netherlands international Kervezee reached his ton off 132 balls and helped the hosts, responding to Derbyshire’s below-par first innings total of 219, reach a hefty 432 for 9 at close.Resuming on 31 without loss, openers Daryl Mitchell and Matthew Pardoe put on 72 for the first wicket before the Derbyshire attack had belated success when Mitchell was caught by Dan Hodgson off David Wainwright for 26. On a frustrating day in the field, spinner Wainwright was the pick of the Derbyshire attack as he finished with 3 for 102 off his 28 overs.Pardoe followed seven overs later, one run short of his half-century, and the visitors scented a change in fortune when Tom Kohler-Cadmore fell lbw to Tony Palladino for 11. But those hopes were extinguished by a fine fourth-wicket stand of 78 between Ali and Kervezee before Ali met Wes Durston’s offspin with a back-foot shot straight at Tim Groenewald just before tea.Kervezee battled on to make his century before he was caught by Wayne Madsen off Mark Footitt to leave Worcestershire on 388 for 7. Jack Shantry’s departure from the next ball left Footitt on a hat-trick, but Footitt would have to wait two more overs for his third wicket of the innings when he had Saeed Ajmal caught by Chesney Hughes for 1.At the close, Gareth Andrew was providing sterling resistance on an unbeaten 71 with last man Charles Morris 13 not out as Worcestershire carved out a lead of 213.

'Some careers are on the line' – Sammy

Darren Sammy has conceded that careers could be on the line after West Indies’ 2-0 series defeat, including his own position as captain. His team’s hopes disappeared in a session on the third day in Hamilton as they were skittled for 103, and it was far from a one-off implosion from the West Indies batsmen.Sammy, as he has throughout, spoke honestly and openly while reflecting on another heavy defeat – West Indies’ fourth in five matches – but there was a hollow look in his eyes. When asked if he was “angry”, he said he wasn’t that type of person – “I have good control over my emotions” – but whereas in Wellington, he watched his side fold in seamer-friendly conditions that favoured New Zealand, in Hamilton, there was little in the surface for the pace bowlers.Overall, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Darren Bravo averaged over 60 for the series, and Denesh Ramdin’s hundred lifted his figure to 38.40, but then the numbers slip away. Marlon Samuels was the major disappointment, averaging 19.50 while Kieran Powell, who had established himself in the opener’s position, was 17.33.”There are tough decisions to be made by the coach and the director of cricket, some careers are on the line, could be mine as well, you never know,” Samy said while he sat alongside West Indies’ coach, Ottis Gibson. “We cannot continue like this. In any organisation, you need to show graft and commitment. The coach keeps saying if we do the same thing, don’t expect a different result.”Watch us play when we play well and people say wow, things are moving forward, but it’s two steps forward, then three or four backwards. Before we went to India, there were six consecutive Test wins. Then, on the tour of India, we got beaten miserably. We escaped in Dunedin by fighting hard with our backs against the wall. There’s a lot of work to do, we just need to be more consistent.”West Indies’ next Test series is against New Zealand in the Caribbean more than five months away and, given the regression in their form over the last couple of months on the road, the selectors could well decide a change is needed. Sammy has already been removed from the one-day captain’s role, which now belongs to Dwayne Bravo, although he remains the captain of the Twenty20 side that will start as defending champions at the World Twenty20 in Bangladesh.”At the end of the day, the selectors recommend the captain. If I’m asked to do the job I’d still do it. They’ll make the decision,” Sammy said.At tea on the third day at Seddon Park, there were no such remorseful feelings in the West Indies side. Although their lead was only 18, they knew one solid display, leaving a target over 200, would have given Sunil Narine the chance to be a match-winner.”We came here to good batting conditions, that’s not a 103-run pitch, but credit to McCullum and his boys, they had a plan for every batsman and the way their bowlers bowled out under pressure, we didn’t have a response,” Sammy said. “The batting unit needed partnerships, and we were unable to do that. I don’t know what it is, in the end, it’s up to us as batsmen to get the necessary runs, even if they’re ugly.”At the moment, West Indies’ batting is more often ugly for the wrong reasons.

Dogra double powers Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh were hell bent on recovering the time lost – two sessions, due to a government intervention – on the first day, as Paras Dogra’s double century powered them to 543 for 5 by close of play – 407 of those scored on the second day in Dharamsala.Dogra’s form from the last season – five centuries, joint highest with Andhra’s Amol Muzumdar in 2012 – went a long way in pummelling the life out of Goa’s attack. He batted through the day, to claim his third double century in first-class cricket, which included 26 fours and a six and led two century stands today alone.Abhinav Bali was playing his first match after serving out a one-year ban for bringing the game into disrepute through “loose talk and unsubstantiated bragging” after a Television sting operation revealed his involvement in alleged corruption in domestic cricket. He announced his return with a confident half-century but was the first to fall, on 73 to left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati. But it was only a momentary stumble. Rishi Dhawan, the Himachal Pradesh captain, had begun his Ranji campaign last year with a typically aggressive century, but though he kept up the pace, the landmark eluded him as he was dismissed for 89 of 92 balls. However, he was bettered by new import, Bipul Sharma, who was unbeaten on a 74-ball 86, which included eight fours and four sixes as three of Goa’s bowlers leaked over 100 runs.
ScorecardMaharashtra-born Yogesh Takawale could not replicate his stubbornness of yesterday as Tripura were dismissed for 304. Tripura’s bowlers, though, mimicked the ineffective start by their batsmen as Maharashtra ended the day at a comfortable 133 for 1.Seamer Sachin Chaudhari ended Takawale’s resistance on 125, and made short work of the tail to finish with 4 for 44. Shrikant Mundhe was next best, though he only added one wicket to his overnight tally.Opener Harshad Khadiwale steered Maharashtra to their position of solidity with a well-compiled half-century. Vijay Zol, playing his first Ranji Trophy match, was just as collected. With Zol, 18, having scored a century on his first-class debut against New Zealand A in August, Tripura must look to break through early on the third day.
ScorecardSeamers Syed Sahabuddin and D Shivkumar knocked off seven of Hyderabad’s batsmen as they were bundled out for 221 in their first innings against Andhra at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Hanuma Vihari was responsible for one-third of Hyderabad’s total and Amol Shinde contributed with a half-century as well.Shivkumar broke through both the set batsmen, as Shinde nicked off to the keeper and Vihari holed out to C Stephen. With the lower order exposed, offspinner Shaik Basha claimed two wickets in the same over to wind up Hyderabad’s innings.Openers Srikar Bharat and Prasanth Kumar gave Andhra a good start, but Ashish Reddy broke through for Hyderabad in the 12th over. Andhra trail by 136, but have nine wickets in hand and the sedate Prasanth still at the crease.
ScorecardKerala lost a couple of wickets late on the second day after a solid start to their innings against Assam, but with Sanju Samson holding one end together, the match in Guwahati was still in the balance. Samson added 64 runs for the second wicket with Nikhilesh Surendran, and was unbeaten on 46, with Kerala still trailing by 204 runs.Assam, five wickets down overnight, stretched their innings for almost 50 overs on the second morning. Syed Mohammad scored a useful 40 in a century stand for the sixth wicket with Niraj Patel, who scored 82. Kerala would have thought of dismissing the team for below 300, but a half-century stand for the last wicket between Arlen Konwar and Arup Das thwarted the bowling. Vinoop Manoharan and Chovvakkaran Shahid shared three wickets each.

Ford to take over at Surrey in February

Graham Ford will coach Surrey after his contract with Sri Lanka expires in January, having signed a three-year contract with the county.

Andrew Fidel Fernando14-Oct-2013Graham Ford has agreed to become head coach at Surrey after his contract with Sri Lanka expires in January. He has signed a three-year contract with the county.Ford had been linked to the vacant position at The Oval since July when Chris Adams was sacked. He had been informally approached by Surrey while coaching Sri Lanka at the Champions Trophy, but Ford said the deal had only firmed up in the past few weeks. He cited “family commitments” as the chief reason for refusing a renewal of his contract with Sri Lanka.”I had already decided that I was leaving before Surrey even advertised the position, so it took a bit of time,” Ford said. “From a family point of view it works a lot better, in terms of all the time away from family that I currently have to go through.”Ford has a strong relationship with Surrey cricketer Kevin Pietersen, having known him since Pietersen’s time at High School in Durban. He had also been the man Pietersen endorsed for the England head coach role, after Pietersen’s turmoil with Peter Moores ended with Moores’ sacking in 2009.Ford’s move to Surrey will strengthen the South African connection at the county, where Graeme Smith is captain, but Ford suggested his relationships with players at Surrey did not necessarily spur him to take the job.”I haven’t coached any of their players, really,” he said. “I think Pietersen plays about one game a year for them, if that, so he’s not really part of it. But I have worked with Graeme Smith briefly, as he was just coming into the South African national side.”0:00

Graham Ford appointed as Surrey Head Coach

But Surrey chief executive Richard Gould had told that Pietersen’s links with Ford had played a role in the team’s choice of coach, as had Ford’s extensive coaching experience. Ford coached South Africa for three years after the 1999 World Cup, and has also coached Kent, in addition to his two years with Sri Lanka.”There were some discussions with KP and Graham came very highly recommended from many quarters,” Gould said. “When we spoke to him he was an impressive guy and ambitious.”We were looking for somebody with county experience and preferably international experience as well. We also wanted somebody who has a good track record in delivering improvement to players and the team with a good hard working ethic who will be a help to take the club forward.”Ford will be tasked with arresting a two-year slide at the county, which ended with Surrey being relegated to the Division Two of the County Championship this year. He performed a similar role with Sri Lanka, who won their first Test series since Muttiah Muralitharan retired under Ford, though they were also whitewashed 3-0 in Australia during his tenure.”It is in part a rebuilding job but we have a lot of good youngsters and senior players,” Gould said. “It is about getting the most out of them as individuals and as a group.”Sri Lanka Cricket had been desperate to keep Ford, even asking him to reconsider his decision to leave, after he had initially informed them of his plans. Chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya, in particular, has been a vocal supporter of Ford since his time with the Natal side that Ford coached. He had taken the job after Geoff Marsh was sacked in January 2012.

Pietersen a sideshow in real narrative

Some may think this match is all about Kevin Pietersen’s comeback but in reality it is about Yorkshire maintaining their hold on top spot in Division One and whether Surrey are strong enough in their fragile state to resist them, without relying on rain for a helping hand. There was enough of it to keep Pietersen a peripheral figure on day two, from which 36 overs were lost. Yorkshire resisted any thoughts of a declaration until they were nine wickets down, at which point Steven Patterson, the not out batsman, was hopping about in some discomfort after being struck on the foot by Chris Tremlett and in need of attention. Yorkshire sent him to hospital for a precautionary x-ray and he was not on the field when Surrey batted.Pietersen, who joins England for the second of the Twenty20 internationals against New Zealand on Thursday, will have been padded up, presumably, in readiness for a potential top-order collapse when Surrey’s first innings, at first delayed by a lengthy shower and then interrupted by bad light, eventually began. It might have come. Ryan Sidebottom, his hackles quickly rising, gave Arun Harinath a fairly stiff examination in his opening spell from the Football Stand End, during which Harinath twice manage to edge the ball between second and third slips and survived a direct chance to second slip on 18, where Adam Lyth spilled it. Sidebottom gave him a thunderous look before pounding back to his mark.Harinath succumbed eventually to Jack Brooks, who had opened at the Kirkstall Lane End and was then required, in Patterson’s absence, to relieve Sidebottom. But by then there were less than two overs left and Surrey sent in Tim Linley as nightwatchman.Yorkshire’s game plan, presumably, had been to score heavily and perhaps need only to bat once, although if Patterson cannot bowl they will be less equipped to take 20 wickets. Nonetheless, with no Ricky Ponting to offer experience and stability to Surrey’s none-too-confident batting line-up, some early success on the third morning could set nerves jangling and add to the pressure on Pietersen to come up with a responsible innings with the team in mind.If some of Andrew Gale’s form could rub off, it would help. The Yorkshire captain, 114 overnight, had an escape of his own on 121 when he was dropped at second slip by Vikram Solanki off Tremlett. He had made 148 when he was bowled by Gary Keedy, the ball coming back a long way from outside off stump to beat Gale’s attempted drive.By that point, a partnership of 81 between Gale and Liam Plunkett had strengthened Yorkshire’s position significantly. Plunkett, whose move from Durham has transformed his confidence, hit several handsome drives and a number of lusty pulls on his way to his first half-century in Yorkshire colours. He was caught behind when he eventually mis-hit one, the ball flying high off the top edge, but then Sidebottom unleashed a few tasty thwacks of his own to add 26 off 37 balls before at last bringing Pietersen into the game when he sent a ball from Linley airborne towards long-off. Pietersen turned in pursuit and felt confident enough in his physical soundness to fling himself into the catch, from which he emerged unscathed and with ball in hand. The declaration followed immediately.Barring a deluge, Pietersen will bat eventually. Whether he can do so for long enough not to necessitate an appearance in England’s pre-Ashes friendly against Essex remains to be seen.

Shami, Bishnoi specials end Sunrisers' playoff hopes

Punjab Kings defend 125 to keep their hopes of making the top four alive

Brathwaite: Holder does a good job whenever he is called upon

With eight losses in nine games, Sunrisers Hyderabad are no longer in playoff contention. Punjab Kings knocked them out of the race with a tidy bowling performance that kept their own hopes of making the top four alive and kicking.Mohammed Shami’s new-ball breakthroughs to remove David Warner and Kane Williamson hurt Sunrisers early in their chase of 126, after which they failed to find a batter who could change gears in the middle overs. Sunrisers made just 20 in the powerplay – their lowest score for the period in IPL history – and never recovered. Legspinner Ravi Bishnoi then made the most of the rising asking rate by bowling googlies and taking a three-wicket haul in his first match of the renewed season.

Sharjah has been the most difficult place for run-scoring among the three UAE venues in this IPL and it proved to be so yet again as Sunrisers struggled to cope with the variety in the Kings’ bowling attack. The game was not without its thrills though. When Jason Holder struck five sixes late in the chase, it appeared the Kings would lose yet another game from a winning position. But on this occasion, they closed it out well with IPL debutant Nathan Ellis successfully defending 16 in the last over. When batting was relatively easier in the first innings, the Kings stumbled to 125 for 7. It was Holder who starred for Sunrisers with the ball as well, taking three wickets and eventually winning the Player-of-the-Match award too. But it would have been small consolation after such a tough loss.Shami, Bishnoi impressWickets up top were always crucial when defending 125, and it was Shami who got that breakthrough in the first over. David Warner chased a wide ball only to edge it to KL Rahul. Shami then doubled up by dismissing Kane Williamson in his next over. The Sunrisers captain tried to punch a length ball through cover but it jagged back in and he chopped it onto the stumps.Ravi Bishnoi exults after hitting Manish Pandey’s stumps•BCCI

That led to a period of apparent recovery from the other opener Wriddhiman Saha and No. 4 Manish Pandey. But while they did add 22 runs together, it came in 5.4 overs. Spinners Harpreet Brar and Bishnoi found bounce and turn respectively and Ellis bowled an assortment of cutters and slower balls, forcing false shots from the two batters. With the bowlers choking the flow of runs, Pandey (13 off 23) felt it was time to break the shackles. But he fell victim to a googly from Bishnoi that went through the bat-pad gap to crash into the stumps. Soon after, Kedar Jadhav was out for a 12-ball 12, dragging a Bishnoi wrong’un onto his stumps. It wasn’t long before Bishnoi added another wicket to his tally, Abdul Samad out for 1 when his attempt at a slog went to short third man instead. Bishnoi finished with 3 for 24.Saha played a lone hand in tricky conditions. His dismissal, for 30 off 36, came at a crucial time, just after Holder’s three sixes had brought the equation down to 35 off 24. Holder, for his part, looked like he was batting on a wholly different surface. Slot balls from Ellis and Shami were deposited for sixes straight down the ground as he reminded everyone of what a tiny ground Sharjah is, but the lack of support from the others meant he could not drag Sunrisers over the line.Kings batters do just about enoughThe IPL’s most consistent opening partnership between Rahul and Mayank Agarwal got only 26 runs on Saturday as the captain failed to get his timing right early on. Looking to increase the tempo, after a sedate four overs, Rahul flicked the first Holder delivery of the night to midwicket for a simple catch. Few balls later, Agarwal’s mistimed drive off Holder went straight to Williamson at mid-off.The two West Indians who followed could not make much an impact either. Chris Gayle was out for a 17-ball 14, trapped lbw by Rashid Khan, and Nicholas Pooran was out for a four-ball 8 when he slogged a length ball right back to the bowler Sandeep Sharma. It was just reward for Sharma after his opening spell built the initial pressure that resulted in the Rahul and Agarwal wickets at the other end. With both the track and the outfield nowhere near conducive for boundary-hitting, Aiden Markram held up one end to score a slow 27 and take the Kings closer to triple-figures. Cameos from Deepak Hooda (13), Brar (18) and Ellis (12) took them a little further. At the innings break, Rashid said that Sunrisers were ahead having restricted the Kings to a 125-total on a “140-par surface.” However it wasn’t to be as any hope of a Sunrisers playoff surge was extinguished with an even tighter bowling performance.
