Stevens' 44-ball ton chases 337

Darren Stevens hit the fastest hundred of the county season from 44 balls under the lights at Canterbury to outshine Sussex’s Luke Wright and pilot Kent to a remarkable three-wicket win in the Yorkshire Bank 40.Set to score a mammoth 337 for victory, Kent edged home in a tense finish just before 10.30pm to complete a stunning chase with nine balls to spare. Stevens contributed a blistering 53-ball innings of 118, Rob Key chipped in with 52 and Sam Northeast all but saw them home with a maiden one-day century off 90 balls.Facing an asking rate of 8.4 an over from the off, Kent made a brisk start to their pursuit as openers Key and Northeast posted 109 inside 13 overs. Soon after reaching a 40-ball 50 with eight fours, Key holed out to long-on against Chris Liddle then, after Northeast’s 41-ball 50 with five fours and a six, Alex Blake edged behind with Kent handily placed at 151 for 2 at the mid-point of their reply. The hosts accelerated as Stevens took 17 off an over from legspinner Will Beer and 20 came off his replacement, Rory Hamilton-Brown. Stevens notched a 24-ball half-century then moved through the gears, scoring his second 50 off only 20 more to match Mark Ealham’s 44-ball ton, the fastest ever for Kent, in a 1995 Sunday League clash with Derbyshire.Stevens hit 10 fours and six sixes and in the process became the front runner for the Walter Lawrence Trophy, awarded for the fastest hundred of the summer. He finally holed out for 118 and marched off to a standing ovation to leave centre stage free for Northeast. With a modest previous List A best of 69, Northeast plundered 115 with 11 fours and a six but, with only 14 needed for victory, was stumped by Ben Brown when attempting a tired-looking drive against Beer.Ben Harmison quickly departed leg before and with the tension mounting, Calum Haggett chipped to midwicket and Mitch Claydon was run out for 8, having hit his first ball for six.It took a leg-side wide from Sussex saint-turned-sinner Wright to clinch Kent’s fifth win in eight Group A starts and complete a fourth defeat for the shell-shocked Sharks.Having earlier been given first use of a sublime St Lawrence pitch, Sussex made the most of a short boundary on the Old Dover Road side of the ground to improve their one-day best total against Kent within 37.2 overs – beating their previous record of 314 for 7, set in the Gillette Cup at Tunbridge Wells in 1963 which, in its inaugural year, was a 65 overs per side competition.Wright and his opening partner Nash set the ball rolling with an opening stand of 194 in 18.3 overs as Wright plundered 13 fours and five sixes in a 54-ball ton.He clubbed one more of each before his knock ended on 115 when his edged cut shot against Haggett ballooned off the gloves of Geraint Jones, standing up to the stumps, to be caught at backward point.Nash and Wright coasted past their county’s previous best opening stand of 145 in all one-day cricket against Kent, set by Bill Athey and James Hall and, at 153, beat their record for any wicket in limited-overs cricket against Kent, set here by Wright and Matt Prior in August 2012.In the process, Wright had beaten Josh Cobb’s 62-ball hundred for Leicestershire against Somerset in May to set a short-lived mark for the fastest of the season.Only 17 short of his hundred, Nash aimed to sweep the occasional left-arm wrist spin of namesake Brendan Nash, only to be caught at backward square-leg. His 83 came off 58 balls with 11 fours and a six. Stevens joined forces with Nash and then Riley to temporarily stem the haemorrhaging of boundaries thereafter and, come the end, the Sussex total somehow proved inadequate.Michael Yardy (46) perished in pursuit of late runs when he chipped to Stevens as Haggett closed his eight-over stint of 2 for 97 – the most costly one-day bowling figures in Kent’s history.

Buttler admits mixed emotions after ousting friend

Jos Buttler has admitted to mixed emotions after replacing his friend and county team-mate, Craig Kieswetter, in the England one-day side in India

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Jan-2013Jos Buttler has admitted to mixed emotions after replacing his friend and county team-mate, Craig Kieswetter, in the England one-day side in India.Buttler was preferred to Kieswetter for the fourth match in Mohali and will retain his place for the final game of the series in Dharamsala, although he may yet lose his spot to Jonny Bairstow for the matches against New Zealand next month. For now, though, Buttler is focusing on making the most of his opportunity with bat and gloves and knows he has to be ruthlessly professional despite the circumstances of his selection.”My opportunity has come from the demise of a friend and that’s not ideal, when your mate misses out, but it’s a huge opportunity for me and one that I want to take,” he said. “It is a bit tricky, because Craig and I are good friends and have been for a number of years… I don’t think this will change that; this is the world of professional sport and there are only 11 spaces in the England side, that a lot of people want.”Buttler, who made his Somerset debut when Kieswetter was on England duty three years ago, has been taken a little by surprise by his elevation to the wicketkeeper’s position. Having replaced the rested Jonathan Trott he envisaged competing for a batting slot but ensured he spent plenty of time working with Bruce French, the England wicketkeeping coach.”I didn’t really see wicketkeeping coming, but I’ve been working hard on it before Christmas,” he said. “My keeping is still a work in progress, but I think that will improve as time goes on, especially with the amount of work I’m putting into it. It’s something I think I’m developing and something I think can become a strength of mine.Buttler gave a brief glimpse of his batting ability in Mohali with a nine-ball 14, which followed powerful cameo appearances in Twenty20, including two unbeaten innings against India before Christmas and a 10-ball 32 against South Africa at Edgbaston last September. At some stage the ODI format will test his ability to construct a longer innings – something a List A average of 56.89 suggests he can do – but at the moment he is concentrating on giving some impetus to the latter stages of England’s batting effort.”The other strength of my game is trying to be destructive at the end of the innings,” he said. “It’s something I have done for Somerset in the last couple of years and hopefully it’s something I can bring into the international game.”

Kamran Akmal fifty takes Wayamba to top

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsKamran Akmal continued his good form in the SLPL•Ron Gaunt/SPORTZPICS/SLPL

Kamran Akmal’s second half century in three matches and a stifling bowling performance carried Wayamba United to their third consecutive victory, as they crushed Basnahira Cricket Dundee by 67 runs in Pallekele. Kaushalya Weeraratne took 3 for 11 from 3.1 overs, while Akila Dananjaya again turned in impressive figures; his four overs cost 15 runs and brought him two wickets.Cricket Dundee began well enough in pursuit of 166, but could not prevent the fall of wickets once the initial breakthrough was made. Tillakaratne Dilshan was removed for 9 by Azhar Mahmood in his first match of the SLPL, before Mohammad Hafeez caught Dimuth Karunaratne off his own bowling to expose the middle order to Weeraratne and Dananjaya. Cricket Dundee were perhaps guilty of allowing a rising required-rate to fluster them too much, but even when slight release came in the form of a boundary, the Wayamba United bowlers returned fire with a spate of dot balls or a wicket. Cricket Dundee were eventually dismissed for 98 in 19.1 overs.Earlier, Akmal had crashed four boundaries from his first seven legal deliveries to set the evening alight in front of the first decent crowd of the tournament. Two fours to midwicket off a wayward Dirk Nannes and two crisp strokes through cover propelled Wayamba United to a rapid start, before Tamim Iqbal launched a quartet of fours of his own at the other end, and then holed out attempting a straight six. Akmal was busy, rather than explosive, following the initial surge, but dined out on the poor balls from time to time, to ensure his strike rate remained around 140 for the duration of his innings. His teammates, meanwhile, were dismissed too regularly for Wayamba United to turn a strong start into an imposing total. Hafeez and Mahela Jayawardene both got starts, but could not build a partnership of substance along with Akmal, while Dinesh Chandimal’s abysmal form saw him squander a promising beginning as well. Charl Langeveldt bagged three scalps for 36 in four aggressive overs, while spinners Jeevan Mendis and Rangana Herath helped stem the run-rate through the middle passage.

Six-team format for domestic T20s – CSA

South Africa’s domestic Twenty20 tournament will return to a six-franchise competition in the 2012-13 season, after flirting with an expanded event this summer

Firdose Moonda31-May-2012South Africa’s domestic Twenty20 tournament will revert to a six-franchise event in the 2012-13 season after an expanded line-up this summer. A seventh franchise – Impi, comprising players from the semi-professional league and captained by Paul Collingwood – participated in the tournament but finished last and failed to record a single win.CSA identified the manner in which the franchise was assembled as the main reason for its failure. Impi’s squad selection depended on the six existing franchises making players available to them – which was eventually resolved a few days before the start of the competition. They also had problems firming up their overseas contingent and, at the time of their launch, had only managed to sign two of the four foreign players they were allowed.”The difficult part of it was getting the players,” Vincent Barnes, Impi coach and high-performance manager told . “Had players been released sooner by the franchises, it would have been better. So that was disappointing.”Barnes said that though the team had a torrid time on the field, the environment was good. “The feedback I got was that all the players said they had had a fantastic time and enjoyed the competition,” he said. “Some of them would not have played franchise cricket if there wasn’t a seventh team.”Willie Basson, CSA acting president agreed that Impi had done its job in terms of “creating opportunity” but conceded that it did not “produce the results we hoped it would.”However, CSA has not shelved its plans for a larger domestic structure. It plans to appoint a committee to report back on the merits of a 12-team provincial set-up versus the current franchise system. If CSA choose to adopt the larger structure, they would be reverting to an old format. Before the franchise system was adopted in 2004-05, the provincial set-up consisted of 11 teams who competed in a first-class and limited overs competition. If the new proposal is adopted, it will see a 12th team added to the domestic setup. The team is likely to be South Western Districts, who are based in Oudtshoorn, in the Western Cape. They were granted provisional affiliate status in November last year and have been identified as a region which can cater to the development and progression of black African players in particular.

Northern Districts fought back to beat Canterbury at the Mainpower Oval in Rangiora, winning their third game of the tournament and taking the lead in the points table. Asked to bat, ND were bowled out for 197 in their first innings, opener and captain Brad Wilson being the only half-centurion. Willie Lonsdale bagged six wickets to put his team ahead but ND hit back hard. Brent Arnel was the wrecker-in-chief as he bagged a five-for to bowl out Canterbury for 121 and earn his team a handy 76-run lead. Only wicketkeeper Reece Young put up any serious resistance, scoring 55.The ND batsmen, in their second innings, ensured the advantage didn’t slip. Wilson made 60, Joesph Yovich guided the innings with his fourth first-class hundred and James Marshall scored at a fair clip to make 92. There was more to come from the middle order. Daniel Vettori, Daniel Flynn and BJ Watling all chipped in with useful contributions to stretch their team’s score to 426 for 7, at which point they declared.Set 503 to win, Canterbury fought hard, putting in a better effort with the bat it wasn’t enough. Opener George Worker made a half-century and the first three wickets yielded 155 runs. But the pressure increased manifold when Canterbury slipped to 202 for 6. Though Henry Nicholls managed an unbeaten 93 and shared a 76-run stand with Matt Henry down the order, ND were always ahead, making steady strikes. Vettori starred with a five-for while Arnel picked up three. Canterbury were bowled out for 368, sliding to their third defeat.Wellington registered a comfortable seven-wicket win over Auckland at Colin Maiden Park. The stand-out performer for the winning team was seamer Mark Gillespie, who collected his maiden match haul of ten wickets in first-class cricket. His 5 for 67 in the first innings helped Wellington bowl out Auckland for 320. There were half-centuries from Neal Parlane, Anaru Kitchen and Colin de Grandhomme and some support from the lower order but no contribution was substantial enough to stretch the score to imposing proportions. Openers Josh Brodie and Michael Papps led the way for Wellington in their reply. Brodie achieved a career-best score of 210, striking 30 boundaries in an innings that lasted more than eight hours. Papps made 111 in an opening stand of 236. Luke Woodcock made a half-century in the middle order, arresting a slide after Wellington lost four wickets for 63. The visitors eventually managed 479, securing a lead of 159.Gillespie left his mark in the second innings as well, this time skittling Auckland for just 201. He ran through the middle order to bag his second five-for of the match and contributions of 83 and 56 from Kitchen and Colin Munro were the only ones of any significance in the Auckland innings. Wellington lost three wickets in the chase but a target of 43 wasn’t going to put them under pressure.Central Districts overcame Otago by five wickets in a game in which both teams made sporting declarations to give themselves a shot at victory after the entire first day was lost to rain at the Queenstown Events Centre.Otago batted first and declared at 281 for 8 in 95 overs, opener Craig Cumming making 129 and Sam Wells chipping in with 59 in the middle order. CD replied by declaring on 198 for 6 in 66 overs. They were in trouble at 63 for 4 at one stage but wicketkeeper Kruger van Wyk steadied the innings with an unbeaten 72. Though they conceded a lead of 83 by declaring early, CD backed themselves to do well with the ball in the second innings and the move paid off. Thanks to a combined bowling effort, CD dismissed Otago for 115 in just 36.5 overs in the second innings. Otago seemed well placed at 89 for 2 at one stage, but they collapsed, losing eight wickets for 26. Kyle Jarvis picked up three wickets, so did Daniel Wightman; each of the five CD bowlers picked up at least a wicket each. In their chase of 199, CD were struggling at 53 for 4 but van Wyk again came to the rescue, scoring his second half-century of the match, making an unbeaten 74 to guide his team to victory in the company of Carl Cachopa, with whom he added a match-clinching 78. The win was CD’s first in the competition.

Na próxima rodada, o Figueirense visita o Coritiba, no Couto Pereira. Já o Sampaio recebe o Atlético-GO.

O confronto
