Rangers reject Porto’s bid for Morelos

Rangers have now rejected a bid from Porto for the services of star striker Alfredo Morelos.

The Lowdown: Morelos’ future up in the air

The Colombian has been a superb player for the Gers, helping them win the Scottish Premiership title last season and scoring 94 goals in 182 appearances for the club.

Morelos’ current deal may not expire until the summer of 2023, but he has been constantly linked with a summer exit, and it does sort of feel like a matter of when and how much, rather than if.

The Latest: Porto bid rejected

Porto are seemingly one of the most interested parties, and according to journalist Ekrem Konur on Twitter, they have now seen a bid for the striker turned down.

It is stated that Rangers ‘will be in no hurry to sell’ Morelos, which is no great surprise, considering the influence he has enjoyed at Ibrox, with Steven Gerrard describing him as ‘top class’.

The Verdict: Tough to keep hold of him

In an ideal world, Morelos would stay put with the Gers for years to come, spearheading countless titles charges and improving even more as a player.

It will of course be hard to keep hold of the £10.8million-rated attacker, though, as he looks to potentially test himself in a harder league moving forward and prove himself as one of the very best at a higher level than the Premiership.

For now, it is encouraging to see the club being stubborn about letting him go, and if/when he does eventually move on, Gerrard will at least be given a hefty amount to spend on new signings as it seems the club will hold out for every last penny.

Duncan Fletcher points to missed chances in Brisbane

When England coach Duncan Fletcher spoke to the press at the end of the first day’s play in the Brisbane Test, he blamed missed opportunities for the fact that his side found themselves on the wrong end of a commanding Australian batting display

CricInfo07-Nov-2002When England coach Duncan Fletcher spoke to the press at the end of the first day’s play in the Brisbane Test, he blamed missed opportunities for the fact that his side found themselves on the wrong end of a commanding Australian batting display.Three of the chances to which he referred involved Matthew Hayden who finished the day undefeated on 186. However, he was nearly caught when he had 40, but Simon Jones at long leg found his momentum taking him over the boundary as he held the catch. The opener had moved on to 102 when Matthew Hoggard made an awful mess of getting in position under a skyer at mid-off and hardly laid a hand on the ball as it thumped into the turf. Next it was Michael Vaughan’s turn when Hayden had reached 132. Normally one of the safest fielders in the side, Vaughan grassed a straightforward chance off Craig White.Referring to those missed chances, Fletcher said: “Every opportunity that is given to you, you have to grab and we didn’t do that today.”He also defended Nasser Hussain’s decision to field first on winning the toss. “We thought it looked a little bit green and there was some softness and we thought we could help our bowlers but it didn’t really move off the wicket,” Fletcher said.”We thought the pitch would get better to bat on and we have to make sure when we get out there we bat the best we can.”Fletcher also commented on the sickening injury that befell Jones in the field. “The team were pretty upset about it. I don’t think they realised how serious it was, but there was some concern especially because he was just beginning to offer us something.”We believed he was the kind of bowler that Nasser has been calling for that can do something different to the rest of the attack.Kirk Russell, the England physiotherapist, said that there is no reason that the Glamorgan fast bowler should not make a complete recovery from his cruciate ligament injury after an operation.”Surgery is fantastic these days and so is rehabilitation. I know what he’s like and he’ll work very hard. He will get the treatment back in England and I’m sure he’ll be back as good as new.”Initially I was more worried about his left knee when I first saw it because he took a big divot out of the ground with that. When you see it so quickly and you’re there so quickly you think that maybe it’s a fracture because I’ve never seen this type of injury in cricket before – it’s a freak accident.”It was Ricky Ponting, who made 123, who drove the ball that Jones was chasing when he suffered the injury. He had been impressed by what he had seen of Jones before the accident.”It’s very disappointing for him and the England team what’s happened to him today. He showed a bit, he’s obviously got some good pace and Perth would have suited him down to the ground as well.”He showed early this morning by claiming a wicket in his first spell and it’s very bad luck for him.”

Celtic: Hoops battling Fenerbahce for Ayew

Celtic are battling Turkish giants Fenerbahce in a bid to sign former Swansea City forward Andre Ayew.

The Lowdown: Ayew released

Ayew failed to earn promotion with Swansea last season, losing in the playoff final against Brentford at Wembley.

As a result, the Welsh club released the attacker, who was their top earner by some distance.

The versatile forward, who has scored 131 goals at club level during his career, is Swansea’s record signing after joining for £18m in 2018.

The Championship outfit won’t be receiving a fee for the Ghana international’s services, though, and it appears as if the Hoops now want to take advantage of Ayew’s availability.

The Latest: Hoops in the running

According to Turkish outlet Fotomac, cited by the Daily Record (11/06; 21:49), both the Hoops and Fenerbahce are pursuing a deal for the 31-year-old.

Wages are thought to be a key factor in Ayew’s next move, with a transfer fee not required.

The Verdict: McKay may need to break a club record

Ayew’s Swansea deal was thought to be worth a whopping £83,000-a-week – £60,000-a-week more than the club’s second-highest earner.

Celtic’s highest earner last season, excluding loanees, was Scott Brown on £23,000-a-week. He’s now with Aberdeen, so you’d expect CEO Dominic McKay would have to offer Ayew a club record-breaking contract to have a chance of securing the forward’s services.

From the outside looking in, it appears as if a deal may well be extremely hard to strike considering the scarcely believable wages he was on with a second-tier side.

However, with the Hoops undergoing a rebuild on and off the pitch, who knows, they could be willing to offer Ayew mega money to bring him to Parkhead and lead the new era. Only time will tell.

Bahutule dominates second day at Pune

Leaving a big impact on West Zone’s Duleep Trophy match against North Zone at Pune, Sairaj Bahutule hit a century and then snapped up four middle-order wickets to leave his opponents reeling at the end of the second day.Bahutule, who was unbeaten on 66 at the start of the second day, duly went on to reach three figures. He batted well with the tail, especially Irfan Pathan, who made 25 off 63 and extended much-needed support to Bahutule at the other end.The last wicket, that of Bahutule, fell with the score on 396, with North Zone conceding 100 runs to take out the final two batsmen. Bahutule fell to Nehra (3-70) after making 105 off 163 balls, with 17 fours and one six.North Zone started off their reply badly, finding themselves at 89 for four as Irfan Pathan took quick wickets at the top of the order. Although all top five batsmen got starts, they could not convert them into big scores. Batsmen continued to come and go, and North Zone were placed, at various stages of the innings, at 132 for six and 154 for seven. The highest scorer of the innings was off-spinner Sarandeep Singh. Sarandeep was unbeaten on 69 off 89 balls, with 11 fours, at the close of play, accompanied by Ashish Nehra, on 1 off 22 balls, at the crease. North Zone were 231 for eight at stumps, and West Zone look to have firm control of this match.

Fry hails Lampard amid Crystal Palace links - Exclusive

Peterborough United Director of Football Barry Fry has lauded Frank Lampard amid links with Crystal Palace.

The Eagles are continuing their hunt for a new boss in the wake of Roy Hodgson’s departure from the club.

Palace have yet to appoint anyone in the ex-England boss’s stead, despite links with a number of managers.

Indeed, it seemed that Nuno Espirito Santo would replace Hodgson but those talks have broken down, leaving the Eagles back at square one.

The Daily Mirror has reported previously that Lampard is subsequently back in the frame to take over, as he has been out of work since his sacking by Chelsea.

Fry is not sure if he would be willing to take over at Selhurst Park but he believes that he deserves an immense amount of credit for showing real faith in youth at both Stamford Bridge and Derby County.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “I’m not sure about Palace.

“Frank’s very good. When he went to Derby, he was very good at loaning three or four players that got Derby in the play-off final and to be fair to Frank, when he went back to Chelsea, he still played them young kids.”
