Rangers: Davis struggled vs Switzerland

Rangers host Hearts at Ibrox next weekend after a two-week break due to international duty and this has afforded Steven Gerrard plenty of time to consider his Gers team selection for the clash.

Hearts are one point behind the Glaswegian side, who are top of the table, and a win for Gerrard’s side could be a major boost to their hopes of retaining the Scottish Premiership title this season.

The break also hands a chance for players to stake a claim for their place in the Rangers XI by catching the eye with a strong performance for their respective countries.

One player who failed to take his opportunity to impress was central midfielder Steven Davis, who struggled for Northern Ireland against Switzerland on Saturday. The ex-Southampton man struggled in the middle of the park as the Swiss recorded a comfortable 2-0 win in the World Cup Qualifier.

Davis left a lot to be desired at both ends of the pitch, as he was defensively weak and poor on the ball. Per SofaScore, he lost 75% of his duels as he only won two of his eight 50/50’s. He also failed to make a single tackle in 90 minutes on the pitch, whilst being dribbled past once. This shows that he was a yard slower than the Switzerland players, whilst he also failed the physical test in his individual duels.

In possession, the veteran was unable to showcase his quality either. Per SofaScore, he only completed 67% of his attempted passes, whilst losing the ball 12 times from only 41 touches. That meant he surrendered possession every 3.4 touches.

He also failed with five of his six long pass attempts and did not attempt a single dribble in the match. This shows that he struggled with the ball at his feet and was nullified by the Switzerland midfield.

With plenty of competition for a starting berth in midfield for the Gers, this performance from Davis was far from ideal for him. The likes of Joe Aribo, Glen Kamara, John Lundstram and Juninho Bacuna are all vying to start in the midfield three and Gerrard could be tempted to go without Davis due to the worrying nature of this display.

Therefore, Davis has missed a huge chance to show Gerrard that he deserves to start against Hearts. Although he is an experienced player who can be relied upon if needed, the other players in his position could put forward cases of their own and reference his troublesome showing for Northern Ireland.

Dyson doesn't want Antigua repeat

John Dyson, the West Indies coach, wants his players to learn from their mistakes in Antigua and make sure they don’t have to fight it out for a draw again

John Dyson, the West Indies coach, wants his players to learn from their mistakes in Antigua and make sure they don’t have to fight for a draw again. The outstanding efforts of Ramnaresh Sarwan and the lower order helped them survive with nine wickets down, but Dyson said it should be a warning sign.”We showed some good character in Antigua,” he said, “although I was a bit disappointed with the way we battled and bowled but the end result showed a lot of character. England will come at us even harder this time and we need to be consistently putting big totals on the board in the first innings. England showed you can control the game by doing that.”West Indies let the game slip right from the opening session after Chris Gayle put the visitors in on a surface that was expected to aid the quick bowlers but turned into an excellent batting track. During the game Dyson said hindsight was a wonderful thing and he still supported Gayle’s decision. “It was made for all the right reasons,” he said. “We lacked intensity and passion, which then came out on the last afternoon when we should have been stamping our authority on the game.”Although Daren Powell was one of the heroes of the rearguard, playing out the final 10 overs with Fidel Edwards before the light faded, he has come under pressure for his sub-par performance with the ball. But Dyson has seen first hand how hard Powell is trying to overcome his problems and believes he can strike form.”Daren is an honest assessor of his own performances and he realises that it would be great for him to put in some big performances with the ball,” Dyson said. “If you watch him work in the nets and around the whole scene you realise he is a very hard worker. I think one of these days we are going to see a spell from Daren that turns his fortunes right around. I’m just waiting for the day when it all clicks for him and he walks away with a five-for.”West Indies’ last-gasp draw had them celebrating as though it was a victory while England looked as if they had lost. Coupled with the loss of Andrew Flintoff because of injury and Matt Prior’s flying home to see his new baby, it would suggest that momentum is heading the home side’s way.”Both sides have played some excellent cricket and both sides have played some poor cricket,” Dyson said. “England have been hit by a couple of injuries so it’s a difficult one to say who’s got the momentum.”West Indies will again face a challenge off the field with hordes of England fans set to flood the Kensington Oval, outnumbering local supporters. But Dyson wants his players to use that to their advantage and put in a performance to silence the visiting fans.”It’s a motivating factor for both teams. If you are out there with people yelling against you it still acts to motivate you. We expect larger numbers of England supporters here than locals, but it makes you want to do something about it.”

Masi reveals reason for transfer decision

West Bromwich Albion did not make a move for a right-back this summer due to Valerien Ismael’s faith in Albion’s youth prospects.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a Joseph Masi report for The Express & Star, with the journalist claiming that, despite a distinct lack of depth at right wing-back, the Frenchman decided not to sanction a move for a player in the position over the course of the summer transfer window due to his faith in both Taylor Gardner-Hickman and Ethan Ingram.

Masi continued by stating that many West Brom fans, himself included, would have liked to see the 45-year-old strengthen the position this summer.

However, the journalist went on to add that very few fans of the club would want to see the pathway of a promising youngster to the first-team blocked.

Fans should be excited

While it is indeed true that, should Darnell Furlong pick up an injury over what is sure to be a long and arduous Championship campaign for West Brom, Ismael will have a very limited number of senior options to replace the 25-year-old, the fact that the 45-year-old is so keen to place his trust in the likes of Gardner-Hickman and Ingram should excite Albion fans.

Indeed, while the 18-year-old Ingram and the 19-year-old Gardner-Hickman have made just one senior appearance each for the Baggies, should the youngsters possess the ability to feature in the Championship on occasions this season – which Ismael clearly feels they do – the experience of playing in the second tier of English football will only help their development in the professional game.

And, if one of the young right-backs can go on to secure the spot of Furlong’s deputy in the position, or potentially even begin the push the £4.5m-rated man for his starting place in Ismael’s side come the end of the season, the Frenchman will certainly be vindicated in his decision not to bring in a fresh face at right-back this summer – not only because the emergence of an academy prospect will have saved the club money, but his faith in the youngsters could potentially help create a very valuable asset for the Baggies.

Fans love to see one of their own come through the system and make their mark on the first-team, and it’s exactly why Ismael’s reported faith in West Brom’s youngsters is an exciting approach.

Celtic: McLeish reacts to Giakoumakis details

Football Insider pundit Alex McLeish has been reacting to details of Celtic’s move for striker Georgios Giakoumakis.

The Lowdown: Giakoumakis details

The Greece international was one of three Celtic arrivals on deadline day, with Filipe Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers penning Parkhead terms.

Speaking on the Celtic Exchange podcast (7th September), Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph admitted that the Hoops actually landed themselves a cut-price deal when it came to Giakoumakis.

The 26-year-old cost Celtic £2.5m, but if VVV-Venlo weren’t relegated from the Eredivisie last season, they would’ve asked for £8.58m (€10m) for the striker’s services.

The Latest: McLeish’s comments

McLeish was asked for his thoughts by Football Insider on Giakoumakis’ £6m price drop. This is what he had to say in reply, believing the Hoops may have got themselves a bargain:

“Well, it remains to be seen. We’ll assess the guy’s level.

“I tend to think that when you’re coming from Holland and you’ve excelled against some of the top teams, then it does seem to be a good signing.

“The fact that Venlo were relegated and for it to go from €10million to £2.5million is some bit of business.

“That’s if he can live up to the reputation that he has shown in the Dutch Eredivisie.”

The Verdict: Magic from McKay?

The Hoops parted ways with Odsonne Edouard after bringing in Giakoumakis, selling the Frenchman to Crystal Palace. That transfer could be worth £20m in total, so Dominic McKay could end up with a £17.5m profit when it comes to late deals on centre-forwards.

Of course, Giakoumakis needs to impress to make it a shrewd piece of business, but if he can replicate his 2020/21 form (26 goals in 30 league games) in Scotland, a transfer will surely be viewed as a bargain, as McLeish has suggested.

Norris: Ipswich a great place for Barry to develop and get games

Former Ipswich Town player David Norris believes that Portman Road is a great place for Louie Barry to develop and play some games.

Barry signed a season-long loan deal with the Tractor Boys earlier this month and has featured three times for Ipswich so far, twice in League One and once in the Carabao Cup.

The 18-year-old featured for Villa’s youth teams on 25 occasions last season, scoring 19 goals and providing five assists, and also scored for the first team at Villa Park in the FA Cup against Liverpool.

And David Norris believes that a loan move to Portman Road will benefit Barry, telling Football FanCast: “A great place, good big club, get some games.”

Ipswich Town have made 16 summer signings so far in the transfer window, with Tom Carroll the latest to put pen-to-paper on a deal at Portman Road, but the Tractor Boys have struggled in their opening four League One matches, picking up just two points from a possible 12.

Whilst it’s not been the best start to the season, Paul Cook and everybody connected with the football club will be hoping that the new signings click and gel quickly and that they can start moving up towards the promotion end of the League One table.
