Always rated him: Queens Park Rangers fans hail Matt Smith following impressive win

[ad_pod ]

It has been a tough season for Queens Park Rangers, but they finished their 2018-19 Championship campaign with an impressive 2-1 victory at Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday afternoon.

The winner came very, very late. Matt Smith scored it, with the towering striker finding the back of the net in the third minute of additional time at the end of the 90.

The 29-year-old finished the 2018-19 campaign with six Championship goals, but it is worth considering that the clash with Wednesday proved to be just the third time that he had completed the full 90 minutes of a league fixture this term.

Smith – out of contract next summer – would have certainly wanted more of a chance to prove his worth from the start.

And that is also the view of a number of the QPR fans, who have reacted to Smith’s winner against Wednesday on Sunday afternoon.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Smith heading into the new campaign, but the R’s fans have made their feelings pretty clear on Twitter:

Balague reveals Eriksen transfer twist

[ad_pod ]

Respected Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague has issued an update on Christian Eriksen’s future on his official YouTube channel, insisting that Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane is not convinced about the prospect of signing the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder even though the club wants him.

The Spurs playmaker has been heavily linked with a move to the Spanish capital in recent months.

What’s the word?

Eriksen has yet to commit his future to Spurs, with his contract set to expire at the end of next season.

The Independent reported in January that Real had initiated contact over the possibility of a summer move that they hoped would be worth around £100m.

A Guardian report since has claimed that chairman Daniel Levy values the Denmark international at £130m.

And Balague has now stated that, while the player wants to move to Real, Zidane is not sure he possesses the qualities required by Los Blancos.

In a video posted on his official account, Balague said: “Christian Eriksen hasn’t signed a new contract for Spurs. Real Madrid showed interest in Harry Kane and in Eriksen, at least a year and a half ago, and Harry Kane signed a new contract after that and Eriksen hasn’t.

“So Eriksen is waiting for Real Madrid. Real Madrid feel that he will be the perfect replacement for Modric. Not sure I agree with that, but in any case, that is what Real Madrid are thinking, so they want Eriksen, they will try to get him, the problem will always be will Daniel Levy sell? And that conversation hasn’t taken place yet.

“Do Real Madrid want him? Absolutely, despite the fact that Zinedine Zidane is not absolutely impressed with him, but Real Madrid have had long conversations with Eriksen entourage and the club have identified him as a target for sure.”

The grass isn’t always greener

Eriksen should perhaps think twice about the possibility of moving to Real.

It appears inevitable, at this stage, that he will depart Spurs in the summer but there is no guarantee that he will be a key member of Zidane’s squad from next season.

Indeed, he has flattered to deceive for a while at Spurs and has been largely anonymous during their dip in form, in which they have gone five Premier League games without a win.

A major transfer fee would surely see Spurs sell and they are unlikely to put up too much of a fight if the offer exceeds £100m.

Eriksen, though, may be destined to repeat the feats of Gareth Bale, another former Spurs star who is now regularly whistled at in Madrid.

Transformed under Dean Smith: Matt Murray lauds Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish

[ad_pod ]

Matt Murray has sung the praises of Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish, a player who only seems to be getting better as the weeks go by, while speaking on The Debate podcast this week.

What’s he said?

Grealish has been a hot topic in recent months with the attacking midfielder turning in some excellent displays in the Championship.

This season, the Villa man has five goals and five assists in 28 league outings, demonstrating his importance to Dean Smith’s team.

He’s been one of the driving forces behind the Midlands clubs’ strong hopes of promotion and, as a result, has attracted reported interest from the likes of Tottenham.

The 23-year-old has earned rave reviews and he’s now received praise from Sky Sports pundit, Murray. While speaking on The Debate at 37:10, he said:

“Jack Grealish for me is an absolutely fantastic footballer. I think he’s brilliant.”

Plenty more to come

Grealish is a fascinating footballer. When he first burst onto the scene with Villa in the Premier League there seemed to be a lot of hype around him. However, after failing to get a move when they went down it seemed as though his stock had fallen.

But what’s been pivotal to his turnaround and improved form this season is the Villans’ manager, Smith. Murray’s comments on the Debate are symptomatic of this, with the midfielder adding more goals and assists to his game under the former Brentford boss.

In terms of the number of goals he’s been involved in, the 2018/19 season represents his best to date so it’s no surprise to see him attracting the interest of one of England’s top clubs.

However, it isn’t just his goals and assists that have stood out but his leadership credentials have come to the forefront under Smith too. He has given him extra responsibility and the player seems to be relishing it.

His attitude has definitely improved and you sense there is plenty more to come from Grealish. Whether that’s at Villa or another club is a different matter, though.

Neil Lennon is surely the best candidate Celtic could ask for

Celtic have been thrown into disarray following the premature departure of Brendan Rodgers, and with their next manager the hottest topic, fans will surely be relieved to hear that Alex Neil is not in the running.

Former Celtic man Chris Sutton has blown a fuse since Rodgers exit, and probably for good reason.

The Hoops were on course for their eighth domestic title when Rodgers made the hurried decision to make his way back over to the Premier League, leaving his former team well and truly in the lurch.

We do not doubt that at some point he was going to leave: commentators have been discussing the move for some time, after all.

Former Scotland forward Kris Boyd, for example, told Talksport: “There is potential to create something there with Leicester,” (via Leicester Mercury).

“Brendan likes a project there is no doubt about that – you can see what he’s done at other clubs,

“It might be the start of something again for Leicester to stay at the top end of English football.

“In terms of the size of the club, the history then it’s a step down,

“but if you ask any manager where they want to manage then it’s the English Premier League.

“I think Brendan Rodgers would want to finish the season up here and finish it on a high as Celtic manager.”

Unfortunately Boyd and the majority of us were wrong, Rodgers has left, and with that he has created a mammoth void to be filled.

David Moyes was the first nightmare Hoops fans had to overcome, with the ex-Celtic player reportedly interested in returning to the club where his footballing career began (via Express). Considering how rotten his record has become since being sacked by Manchester United, his appointment would be most unwelcome.

Current Preston North End coach Alex Neil was the next man to be briefly linked, but, according to The Scottish Sun, the former Hamilton boss has recently ruled himself out. To the relief of many, we are sure.

Interim boss Neil Lennon is surely the preference now. Lennon has been at the club before and done great things, winning three Scottish titles and two Scottish Cups.  To consider anyone else during this vital point of transition would be negligent on the club’s part. They need someone who knows Celtic inside and out, and their current man is the best candidate for the job.

Every failed link with be music to the ears of fans.

Arsenal: Unai Emery has made Arsenal show up for big games

After exactly 30 games of the Premier League it is quite clear to see the massive difference Unai Emery has made as the new Arsenal manager this season.

After years of turmoil and disappointment, the Arsenal faithful was desperate to get someone in charge who could steer the club to a new direction with new belief amongst all involved and Emery has certainly delivered that, or at least started to change the course and goals set out to achieve.

Arsenal are 12 points better off at the moment compared to exactly the same stage last season, while they are only three points behind reaching their total points of the whole of last campaign.

Those stats might not indicate that success is destined to reach the club soon, but is a sign that Emery has a plan which he believes could maybe reap rewards in the near future.

For the Arsenal fans, it was a case of showing improvement from last season and to be honest it probably isn’t that difficult seeing how bad they were in Wenger’s last season.

But, Arsenal have now won nine consecutive home games in the league, currently posing with the second-best home record in the competition, while they have shown a great deal of improvement against the ‘top six’.

Having already played all the other ‘big’ five clubs twice in the league, Arsenal have managed ten points in total against their rivals, double of what they achieved last season.

And, they have managed to pick up valuable wins at home by grinding out games against quality opposition.

The 4-2 over Tottenham Hotspur in December was followed by 2-0 victories over both Chelsea and Manchester United this year.

In the past, these were the matches where the Gunners might have slipped up or maybe settle for a point.

But, in all three of those matches did Emery show the ambition he has brought to the club and why there is a proper reason to be optimistic about the future.

Portugal player ratings vs Slovakia: Brilliant Bruno Fernandes saves the day as Ronaldo flops in Euro qualifying win

The Manchester United midfielder starred to salvage a win after an otherwise disappointing performance from his side.

Bruno Fernandes scored a wonderful goal and was a constant source of creativity as Portugal grabbed a valuable away win to bolster their Euro 2024 qualification hopes. He was the difference maker in a night were Cristiano Ronaldo consistently misfired, with the Selecao stumbling to a 1-0 victory.

Slovakia enjoyed some promising moments in the early goings, putting two efforts on target in the opening 10 minutes. Portugal responded with a chance of their own, but Bruno Fernandes' tame effort was easily saved. But he didn't miss when given another chance. The Manchester United midfielder slalomed through the Slovakia defence and found the bottom corner with a driven strike to give Portugal a 1-0 lead on the stroke of half time.

The hosts could have leveled things early in the second half, as Ivan Schranz ran through on goal, only to skew a shot outside the post. But Portugal were mostly comfortable for the rest of proceedings — if rather ineffective in front of goal. Ronaldo missed a handful of chances, and was perhaps fortunate not to be sent off for sliding in dangerously on Martin Dubravka.

Still, the Portugal defence did enough to see off Slovakia, who never really threatened at the other end as time wound down. The Selecao will have to play better in the future — and will surely need more from their captain — but they will certainly take a tricky away win.

GOAL rates Portugal's players from Tehelne Pole…

Goalkeeper & Defence

Diogo Costa (7/10):

Only had a few saves to make, and looked comfortable throughout. Not an easy place to keep a clean sheet.

Diogo Dalot (6/10):

Solid defensively, but lacking going forward. Doesn't have the best understanding with Bernardo Silva.

Ruben Dias (8/10):

Continued his excellent start to the season with an imperious performance at the back.

Antonio Silva (6/10):

Not the most comfortable evening for the teenager, who was consistently targeted by the home side. Good to see him get minutes, though.

Joao Cancelo (6/10):

Enjoyed some excellent forward runs, and tried to ping the ball around a bit. Still hasn't found the form that made him so devastating for Man City 18 months ago.

AdvertisementMidfield

Joao Pahlinha (6/10):

Flew into tackles with his usual gusto, but didn't always time them. Could have been booked on at least three occasions.

Bernardo Silva (7/10):

Assisted Fernandes' goal, but was otherwise starved of opportunities to create. Unclear if he and Vitinha can function in the same XI. He was much better after the PSG man went off.

Bruno Fernandes (8/10):

Took his goal wonderfully after failing to get involved early on. His influence grew in the second half, and he was his side's most dangerous attacking threat. A fine performance for the birthday boy.

Attack

Vitinha (5/10):

On the ball a lot without being particularly effective. Certainly deserved the start on the strength of his showings for PSG, but didn't do enough to suggest he should keep his spot in the side.

Cristiano Ronaldo (5/10):

Not at his best. His movement was as effective as expected, but it wasn't his night in front of goal. Fortunate to avoid a sending off after a reckless challenge on the goalie. He's set high standards, and simply didn't meet them.

Rafael Leao (7/10):

Embarked on a number of impressive forward runs, and was a constant danger on the ball. Unlucky to be subbed after 60 minutes.

Subs & Manager

Nelson Semedo (6/10):

Got forward well and kept things simple.

Otavio (5/10):

Rather anonymous for 25 minutes.

Pedro Neto (6/10):

Offered valuable pace on the wing in his fourth international cap.

Roberto Martinez (7/10):

Deployed a back four for the first time in qualifying, and Portugal were much more effective as a result. Although his side wasn't exactly devastating, they defended well and found their moments going forward. He will take the three points.
