Goleiros: Fernando Prass, Vagner e Vinicius Silvestre
Laterais: Lucas, João Pedro, Zé Roberto e Egídio
Zagueiros: Edu Dracena, Leandro Almeida, Roger Carvalho, Vitor Hugo e Thiago Martins
Volantes: Arouca, Jean, Matheus Sales, Gabriel e Thiago Santos
Meias: Allione, Régis, Moisés e Robinho
Atacantes: Dudu, Alecsandro, Erik, Cristaldo, Rafael Marques, Gabriel Jesus e Lucas Barrios

Forget Livermore: West Brom must turn to Sam Field for crunch match

West Brom head into a crucial run of matches that could determine their future in the Premier League and arguably, tonight’s game is the most important of them all.

They host Sheffield United at the Hawthorns in a bottom-of-the-table crunch match between the only two sides yet to record a victory in the English top-flight.

And Baggies boss Slaven Bilic may still be without some of his key stars. The Croatian remained coy over the availability of skipper Jake Livermore, so if he is indeed absent once again, there is only one name suited to filling the void.

Sam Field.

The 22-year-old was another player who tested positive for the virus over the international break, an untimely blow having only just returned from a knee problem, but it appears he is back in training and ready to feature once again.

Aside from Livermore, he is the only out-and-out defensive anchor at Bilic’s disposal – you could even argue that he’s more suited to the role of lynchpin more than the captain himself.

In the Championship last season, Field spent his time on loan at league rivals Charlton Athletic, where he would go onto outperform Livermore, Romaine Sawyers and Rekeem Harper for defensive attributes, as per The Athletic, which you can see in the table below.

No team has leaked more goals than Albion this season, so it would be a fair judgement to argue that they are far too easily bypassed in the engine room, which is why a player of Field’s quality is needed.

He rated out better than Livermore in every facet last term – tackles, blocks, possession won and clearances – and it’s not as if the Baggies talisman has covered himself in glory this term either, scoring an own goal on top of managing just 2.7 fouls per 90 minutes, via WhoScored.

Maybe the 31-year-old’s absence is actually a blessing in disguise.

Pretty much every manager to walk through the door in the Midlands has praised Field, so he ought to get a fair crack sooner rather than later.

Bilic claimed he would have “an important role to play” this season, yet the academy grad has been limited to just 239 minutes in all competitions.

Whilst Tony Pulis lauded Field as the best youngster he’s ever seen, he said: “I think he’s going to be a fantastic player for the club. Technically, he’s as good and as gifted as any footballer I’ve seen at that age.”

Even Gary Megson could see it, claiming: “In terms of Sam, I think he’s going to have a great future as a footballer. He’s got a lot of qualities.”

This is absolutely a must-win – a clichéd six-pointer – so the Baggies boss would be a wise man to consider adding Field to the mix. His stability in front of the defence could finally unleash the likes of Conor Gallagher and Matheus Pereira further up the field.

Journalist gives glum verdict on Liverpool’s crisis – %%sitename%%

Liverpool’s injury crisis does not appear to be getting any better in the short-term, and well-respected journalist James Pearce has had his say about the matter.

Pearce not convinced

The Reds got themselves over the line last night as they defeated West Ham United 2-1 at Anfield but they certainly made hard work of it.

Pablo Fornals’ first-half opener was cancelled out by a Mohamed Salah penalty before a late winner by substitute Diogo Jota ensured that Jurgen Klopp’s side went top of the Premier League.

Nathaniel Phillips was forced to stand in for the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Fabinho who are all sidelined. Klopp would be open to using Andy Robertson or Jordan Henderson in that position if it’s required (cited by Goal), but he chose to play Phillips.

Replying to a fan on The Athletic’s Q&A session after the full-time whistle, Pearce was not convinced that a short-term option, similar to Steven Caulker, who was brought in on an emergency loan a few years ago, will arrive in January.

“I’d be surprised if LFC went for a short term option”, he said. “The reality is they need another CB anyway. It’s not like they just need one until VVD is back fit.”

Pearce did not go into detail as to whether The Reds would be investing during the winter window, with the Premier League champions having been linked with the likes of RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly.

Huge concern

While Klopp may have a short-term plan to get him through to January, his team is where they need to be in the standings as things stand.

However, their problems will not go away, Matip has been struggling to stay fit even before Van Dijk’s injury and the manager will have known that. His decision not to replace Dejan Lovren in the summer is now looking like a mistake.

That being said, the Reds are unbeaten since the Dutchman was seriously hurt, which should provide an injection of confidence throughout the dressing room.

On the flip side, Liverpool have not been convincing in recent games and as such, Klopp should monitor the situation carefully and will need to make an urgent decision in January.

In other news, Liverpool fans believe that ‘useless’ asset needs to be dropped.

Sheffield Wednesday’s transfer decision on Barry Bannan instantly vindicated

Sheffield Wednesday got back to winning ways on Saturday afternoon and in the process, one key Owls decision was fully vindicated. The Hillsborough outfit received a shock £1m bid from Championship rivals Brentford for talismanic midfielder Barry Bannan in the final week of the domestic transfer window. And during deadline day on Friday, Sky Sports’ Keith Downie reported that the Bees remained interested in the veteran, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

It would have maybe been an easy decision to cash in on a 30-year-old who would be free to leave in less than 12 months, but their call to keep hold of him has already been vindicated.

The Owls defeated Garry Monk’s former club Birmingham City 1-0 at St Andrew’s Stadium with Bannan delivering a ‘Man of the Match’ display.

Per SofaScore, the Scotsman not only scored the only goal of the game but also recorded two key passes, two dribbles and two interceptions. He even won 83% of his ground duels and lost possession 17 times.

Sheffield Star reporter Alex Miller dubbed the skipper’s second-half showing “classy” and also suggested that he “deserved the headlines.”

Bannan was certainly in the thick of it all game and was evidently vital as the Owls’ ticking metronome with Wednesday picking up their first win in four in all competitions.

Now, it is expected that the long-serving midfielder will sign a new contract extension with Monk claiming that he’s an “integral part” of his plans moving forward, even despite his advancing years.

Bannan hasn’t just impressed those of an Owls persuasion, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola called him an “incredible player” after their FA Cup fifth-round clash last season.

Clearly, he’s ever so vital to Wednesday and their fortunes, so the decision to gamble on him entering the final six to eight months of his £27k-per-week contract has already been fully justified.

Owls chairman Dejphon Chansiri now must make things even better by giving him the deal he deserves.

West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna was a rare positive against Newcastle

There aren’t many reasons for those associated with West Ham United to be positive after their 2-0 loss against Newcastle United.

Having lost the opener in a tame fashion, they now face Arsenal, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Liverpool in their upcoming Premier League matches.

There are also no new faces in the camp to add extra positivity, so it really is difficult to find too many things for Hammers fans to feel good about.

Angelo Ogbonna’s performance against Newcastle was arguably a rare sign that West Ham can have even a trace of confidence.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The £5.85m-rated man has shown natural leadership over the last couple of seasons, which was also the case in this match, as he was constantly communicating with his teammates and encouraging them.

He was also pretty solid in his general defensive work, coming up against the varied challenge of Callum Wilson and Andy Carroll.

The 32-year-old won half of his 10 aerial duels, with his total of five successes only being exceeded by Carroll.

In addition to that, the centre-back won one of the two tackles that he attempted, as well as completing one interception and five clearances.

He also completed 86% of the 54 passes that he attempted throughout the match, with only Issa Diop and Declan Rice completing more.

Ogbonna was even close to getting on the scoresheet, as he hit the bar with a strong header, which was the closest the Hammers got to beating Karl Darlow.

He may not have got any reward for his performance, in terms of points, but Ogbonna does deserve some recognition for his display.

Sunderland: Interest shown towards Arbenit Xhemajli

Sunderland are showing interest in Kosovo international Arbenit Xhemajli, according to a report by the Chronicle Live.

Black Cats boss Phil Parkinson will undoubtedly be keen to bolster his squad options this summer after failing to gain a promotion to the Championship and finishing eighth in the League One standings.

Whilst uncertainty continues to grow around the ownership of the Wearside club, transfer links are starting to develop with Xhemajli the latest name to be linked with a move to the Stadium of Light.

Xhemajli, who is valued at £765,000 by Transfermarkt, was born in Switzerland but represents the Kosovo national side and his impressions have seemingly left a mark on Sunderland boss Parkinson.

The 22-year-old began his playing career with Swiss side Neuchatel Xamax having spent a number of years through his youth development with Zurich.

Making 22 appearances in the 2019/2020 season, Xhemajli contributed with two goals and one assists from his accustomed centre-back position, whilst helping his team keep three clean sheets in the Swiss Super League.

His potential arrival would give Parkinson a further defensive options having just sealed a deal for Australian Bailey Wright.

The signing of Wright and interest in Xhemajli will be music to the ears of Sunderland fans, who will be desperate to see an improvement next season. Indeed, centre-back was an area that they needed to target having lost Jack Baldwin, Joel Lynch and Alim Ozturk following the conclusion of the 19/20 campaign.

Whilst the Kosovo international is relative unknown, his talents have obviously caught the eye of Parkinson. As already alluded to, whilst he is a defender by trade he certainly has an eye for a goal too, having netted nine times in his club career for both his current team and whilst in the Zurich youth sides (Transfermarkt).

Whether they can get a deal over the line remains to be seen.

Do you think Arbenit Xhemajli would be a good signing for Sunderland? Let us know in the comments section below…

ANDRÉ MARCA, DANILO FERNANDES BRILHA E SPORT VENCE

Crystal Palace: Fans get emotional over video of Julian Speroni

Yesterday Crystal Palace posted a video of former goalkeeper Julian Speroni, as it was a year to the day (11 May 2019) that the player had his final training session for the club, and a lot of Eagles fans were getting emotional at the footage.

Many players come and go, some will be remembered for many years, whilst others will be easily forgotten. However, Speroni falls into a unique category as he will be someone that the Palace faithful will want to tell future generations about as what it truly means to be a player at the south London club.

The Argentine rocked up at the club as a relative unknown in his early 20s from Scottish side Dundee, as per Transfermarkt, and 15 years, 402 appearances and 110 clean sheets later, he would leave a legend.

Countless times he has helped Palace to pick up three points and his heroic saves in the 2013 Championship playoffs in both the semi-final second leg against Brighton and in the final against Watford are a huge reason as to why the Eagles are in the Premier League today.

Here is what these Palace fans had to say following the tweet:

Palace fans, is Speroni the biggest legend to play for the club? Comment below with your thoughts!
