Liverpool: Fans slam Ronald Koeman after reportedly telling Georginio Wijnaldum not to sign new deal at Anfield

A number of Liverpool fans hit out at Ronald Koeman after reports emerged that he told Georginio Wijnaldum not to sign a new deal at Anfield.

The Dutch midfielder is into the final 12 months of his Reds contract with no sign of him extending his deal and The Independent reporting this week that he could be open to a move elsewhere.

Dutch media outlet AD claimed this week [via Daily Mail] that Wijnaldum’s former international manager Koeman, who has just been appointed head coach at Barcelona, has told the 29-year-old not to sign a contract extension at Anfield, with the midfielder seemingly high on the manager’s wish-list.

In four years at Liverpool,ÂWijnaldum has scored 19 goals in 186 games, including two against Barcelona in the epic 4-0 Champions League semi-final win last year. Koeman has previously managed the Reds’ local rivals Everton, who sacked him in October 2017 with the Toffees in the relegation zone after 16 months in the job (as per BBC).

Barcelona have already dismissed two managers this year, sacking Ernesto Valverde in January and giving Quique Setien the boot last week after their 8-2 Champions League drubbing by Bayern Munich.

These Liverpool fans on Twitter slammed Koeman for his apparent interference in Wijnaldum’s Anfield future, with one Kopite calling him a “one and done coach” in what seems a dig at his lack of longevity in any one role – Barcelona is his 11th job as a manager:

Portsmouth: Oliver Hawkins set for summer exit

Oliver Hawkins looks set to leave Portsmouth this summer after seeing his current contract come to an end.

Having missed out on promotion from League One after losing to Oxford United on penalties in the play-off semi-final, Portsmouth could now look to make several changes to their squad this summer.

Pompey are expected to announce their retained list for the 2020/21 season in the near future and Hawkins is one of the players set to leave for free.

His departure has been hinted upon by his partner, who posted a video of his penalty against Oxford on her Instagram account (as reported by Portsmouth News) with a reference to “ending your three years with a goal”.

Hawkins arrived at Fratton Park in 2017 and the Ealing-born striker scored 18 goals in 95 games for Pompey up until the end of this season.
During his time with the former Premier League club, Hawkins, who has also acted as a stand-in defender, scored the winning penalty against Sunderland in the 2019 EFL Trophy final.

Hawkins has not featured much for Portsmouth this term, having struggled with injuries, but he will be a loss this summer for Kenny Jackett.

The 28-year-old striker has been a loyal and good servant for Pompey since he joined the club and his goal against Sunderland last year will go down in history, while his willingness to take up a centre-back role indicates that he is very much a team player.

Jackett now looks set to be tasked with finding a replacement who can match or better Hawkins’ goal return while also being a valuable contributor to the team overall.

Portsmouth: Oli Hawkins reveals how he was told about summer exit

Former Portsmouth striker Oli Hawkins has revealed how he was told that his contract would not be renewed past the summer.

Losing to Oxford United on penalties in the League One play-off semi-final saw Pompey fail in their bid to move up to the Championship, leaving manager Kenny Jackett with some key decisions to make this summer.

One of those has already been made with Hawkins being allowed to leave on a free transfer after his contract came to an end.

Hawkins arrived at Fratton Park back in 2017 and netted 18 goals in 95 games for the club up until the end of this season. Fondly remembered by fans for his winning penalty against Sunderland in the 2019 EFL Trophy final, he also acted as a stand-in defender for the club.

Fresh on the back of his exit from Portsmouth, which the striker said was a ‘surprise’, he has now revealed just how he was told he would not be offered a new deal.

Speaking to Portsmouth News, Hawkins said: “It was three minute call from the manager, thanking me for being there and how he will always have a good reference for me.

“I actually felt I deserved a face-to-face meeting after three years, but with football you can’t expect a lot of things to happen. You have to get on with it sometimes.”

Touching on his future, Hawkins added that he was hopeful of finding a new club in the near future. He said: “I know there’s interest and I’d like to think I might have a choice from a few and then go from there. I cannot say much now, hopefully I can sort something out.”

This was hardly a nice way to say goodbye to a striker who had a decent goal return for Portsmouth and scored a winning penalty for the club to seal silverware on a memorable day at Wembley.

However, as Hawkins outlined, football sometimes does not go the way one might expect and he will now look to find a future elsewhere. Hopefully this is not a decision which Pompey will come to regret.

Tottenham fans react to Jose Mourinho’s comments on Moussa Sissoko

Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach Jose Mourinho said midfielder Moussa Sissoko “was different than my needs” when explaining his decision to start Harry Winks and Eric Dier in central midfield against West Ham United, and Spurs fans have been quick to react.

Speaking post-match as reported by BBC’s Football Daily (3:40), the former Manchester United and Chelsea manager said that he wanted one positional player and one who could pass the ball in the middle of the park against the Irons, and Sissoko was the one to miss out.

It was one of the Portuguese’s first major changes since replacing Mauricio Pochettino at the helm, given he had started all 12 of their Premier League matches this season previously, only failing to complete the full 90 minutes once.

While he was clearly a favourite of the Argentine in that regard, it appears as though it could be a completely different story under Mourinho – something that hasn’t gone unnoticed by Tottenham supporters reacting to his comments.

One individual stated that “Jose doesn’t rate him”, while another believe the remarks mean that “he’s gone”.

It will be interesting to see how regularly the France international features in the next few matches.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith must compromise his tactical principles

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Whilst Aston Villa’s re-arrival in the Premier League after a three-year absence understandably delighted the club, the Villans have commenced the current campaign in a state of inconsistency.

Hard-fought wins against the likes of Everton, Norwich City and Brighton & Hove Albion have added some much-needed points to Villa’s bid to retain their top-flight status, but it is against opposition from the upper echelons of the league table where Dean Smith’s side are battling valiantly yet falling marginally short of results; despite increasingly impressive performances.

An opening day lead away at Tottenham Hotspur after John McGinn scored his side’s first goal of the 2019/20 campaign was squandered, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side fighting back in the final 20 minutes to score three goals.

Yet this has not been a singular occurrence in Smith’s debut season in the territory of Premier League management.

On the opening weekend, Villa yet again travelled to the capital and suffered an equally frustrating fate. Twice the West Midlands’ side led against the Gunners, yet once again their lead was thrown away in the dying embers of the game.

Villa’s performances arguably merited results in both of these fixtures, displaying resolute characteristics. However, their lack of game management meant the club had nothing to show for two impressive away days against top-six opposition.

And with yet another lead lost against one of the Premier League’s elite sides – this time the champions of Europe, Liverpool, on Saturday – Smith must start to address this serious lack of concentration, resilience and discipline in the latter stages of games against high-quality opponents: but importantly, this lies with the manager’s tactical philosophy.

Smith’s desire to build a team based on attacking principles has given Villa a strong foothold to develop a squad capable of extending their stay in the top-flight – his side have scored 16 goals so far this season, more than any other team in the bottom nine.

Yet the price Villa have paid for their attacking endeavours is clear for all to see – Smith’s side have kept just two clean sheets in the division so far this season, with only three teams – Southampton, Norwich and Watford – having conceded more goals.

But when battling the top-six – both home and away – a greater sense of game management and a reduction in the aforementioned attacking principles must be evidenced for the club to progress.

Whilst owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens have plans to finance a behemoth of a football club – rebuilding its stature to its previous historic heights – this will all be in vain if the manager is simply unable to instil a greater sense of determination and defensive discipline in his squad to grind out results when they have battled fiercely to earn the lead.

This degree of criticism against a newly-promoted side may seem, to some, unwarranted.

A team who have come up through the play-offs fighting against superior opposition in their debut campaign may seem worthy of praise by itself. Yet with Villa’s sheer level of spending in the summer window – shelling out £130m on 13 new players – expectations must be higher in the realms of B6.

Villa have the foundations to re-establish themselves as a regular top-flight side, and there can be no doubting that Smith is the man to lead this charge.

But sooner rather than later this Villa squad, led by their manager, must enhance their defensive priorities, ensuring that the remarkable journey the West Midlands side are currently on does not falter and is able to reach its potentially lofty heights in the English top-flight.

Everton fans are buzzing with Richarlison’s recent Twitter activity

Everton fans have been sharing a laugh with Richarlison over the past 24 hours, with the Brazilian taking the time to chat with some fans on social media.

The former Watford man has been learning the English language since his move from his homeland, and Everton fans have been testing him on Twitter.

Fans have also asked him what his favourite food is, who the funniest member of the squad is and even what sort of dog he has.

The supporters have been loving it, with some declaring him a “hero”, whilst others are saying he has now become their favourite player.

It has seemingly been a nice break for the supporters, who despite a positive display against West Ham United, see their team sat 15th in the Premier League.

In such woeful times for a club with much loftier ambitions, it’s funny conversations like Richarlison’s that can get the fans up in high spirits again.

The 22-year-old has become a fan favourite over the last year with the Blues, scoring 13 Premier League goals last campaign. Lately, however, Richarlison has been in a slight rut, scoring just twice this season.

Here’s what went down on Twitter with the Everton man…

Barcelona’s predicted lineup for the clash against Eibar in La Liga

Barcelona have an early kick-off this Saturday as they travel to a difficult ground of Ipurua.

Eibar, their weekend hosts, currently sit in 14th place in the table, having only won nine points in the total of eight games played.

The Catalans are heading into the clash as favourites and they will undoubtedly be aiming to dethrone Real Madrid from the top of La Liga or at least apply more pressure on them as we get back to club football after the international break.

But the Blaugrana will be facing some difficulties with their squad selection and Ernesto Valverde might have to resort to some unexpected picks due to suspensions and possible fatigue.

With all of that in mind, here’s what we think Barcelona’s starting lineup will look like this weekend:

Marc-Andre ter Stegen has started every single game in the league so far and his spot is rarely under threat.

For that reason, it’s fairly safe to conclude he’s going to be the man between the sticks this Saturday as well.

His back four, however, will definitely see some changes. Nelson Semedo is expected to start on his natural right side of the pitch once again, having deputised for both Junior Firpo and Jordi Alba in the last couple of fixtures.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

But with Alba’s return to the squad, the Portuguese right-back should assume his ordinary role. With Gerard Pique’s suspension due to yellow card accumulation, Jean-Clair Todibo might get a nod in front of the experienced Spaniard.

Samuel Umtiti is also back in the squad but he’s still fairly fresh from his injury and with no minutes under his name, it would be a stretch to start him immediately. For that reason, the 19-year-old Todibo might feature once again after a good showing on his debut.

The middle of the park is where it gets interesting again.

Seeing Arthur Melo has done a lot of travelling during his international duties, Valverde might be inclined to give the Brazilian a rest and include the heavily-criticised Ivan Rakitic from the get-go.

The Croatian should then be deployed next to the fairly standard Frenkie de Jong, who picks himself at this point and Sergio Busquets, who only played one game for his national team – the former in a more advanced role on the left and the latter in his traditional defensive midfielder position.

Finally, the front three should bring us no surprises at all – Antoine Griezmann on the left, Luis Suarez upfront and Lionel Messi, who’s finally completely fit and ready, on the right.

With the suspension of Ousmane Dembele due to the red card he received in the last game against Sevilla, Valverde will most likely go for the aforementioned option with little chances of any changes.
