Ansu Fati's father is right: Barcelona's 'new Lionel Messi' needs to quit Camp Nou

The forward's love for the club is obvious but a parting of the ways would be best for everyone involved at this stage.

The circumstances in which Bori Fati could have ended his son's Barcelona career were quite extraordinary.

Bori, Ansu's father and agent, called into Spanish radio station , to air out a number of grievances about his son's situation at Barcelona. He complained about Ansu's lack of playing time, he railed against bigger roles handed to other players.

And, perhaps most importantly, Bori called on his son to leave the club he joined as a teenager.

Ansu was apparently blindsided by the outburst and may release a statement of his own, reaffirming his love for Barca. But the damage may already be done.

At the very least, it's another negative development in what should have been a momentous career from a footballer who is still growing.

Indeed, at a time when he should be looking forward to starting against Elche on Saturday, with Raphinha suspended and Ousmane Dembele injured, he is instead dealing with a furore over his future.

It's quite the fall from grace. Just two years ago, remember, Fati was hailed as Barcelona's 'new Lionel Messi' and even handed the No.10 shirt. Now, he can't even nail down a starting spot.

He isn't the first teenager to be boxed into the Argentine's influence at Barcelona. Indeed, a string of young talents have been dubbed the second coming of the club legend.

Still, Fati was supposed to be the one that panned out. He was never going to reach Messi's talent, influence or production – no one can. But he appeared, at the very least, to be trending in the right direction.

And now, Fati might slip into a familiar Barcelona trap, another failure in a handful of promising attacking players to see their careers flatlined by expectation.

It might be time for the immensely talented 20-year-old to get out of Camp Nou before that can happen.

  • The heir to Messi's throne

Everyone knew Fati was good. The Guinea-born winger was accelerated through La Masia and called into the first team before making a single appearance with the reserve side.

He was a real viral sensation, too, his feints and tricks too easily likened to that of Barca's more permanent right winger at the time.

He got his moment in the midst of a miserable season for the Blaugrana. The Catalan club had been ravaged by injuries in 2020, and the soon-to-leave Ernesto Valverde arguably had no choice but to turn to Fati, who was just 16 at the time.

The prodigy seized his chance with aplomb. He became the second youngest player to appear for Barcelona, the youngest to start in the club's history, and the youngest to score and assist in La Liga.

The teenager grew into the side and, by the end of the season, had bagged eight goals across 15 starts.

The quality of the goals were eye-catching, too. Fati wasn't just scoring tap-ins. The teenager loved to cut on to his wonderful right foot and shoot at goal. But he could also score with his head, and make late runs into the box.

The press swiftly jumped onto the hype train, and interest from across Europe followed. A Spain call-up came shortly, as did praise from then-national team manager Luis Enrique. In August 2020, club president Josep Bartomeu vowed to keep him at Camp Nou for life.

And, inevitably, the claims of a Messi successor stuck.

The 2020 season turned sour very quickly, though, with Barcelona failing to win a single trophy for the first time in 12 years. It was all capped off by an embarrassing 8-2 drubbing by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Amid all that doom and gloom, though, Barcelona had reason for excitement thanks to Fati.

    The original injury

Sadly, it all started to go wrong soon after.

Fati's first major injury was a freak occurrence.

In November 2020, a Real Betis defender tackled Fati, and his knee twisted awkwardly into the Camp Nou grass. A devastating injury diagnosis followed a day later: the teenager had torn his inner meniscus.

The surgery went as planned but, according to , Barcelona messed up Fati's recovery, asking him to do two rehab sessions a day, rather than the required one.

His knee swelled up and, within two months, he was forced to go under the knife again, this time to fix the original procedure.

But that operation didn't quite work out either, and Fati ended up having a chunk of his meniscus removed altogether.

By the end of it all, Fati had had four operations in six months on the same knee. What should have been a three-month recovery turned into nearly 11.

    Further fitness problems

But even when his knee healed, it became clear that Fati wasn't quite right.

Although he returned to something resembling his old form in November 2021 – bagging goals against Celta Vigo and Dynamo Kyiv – more knocks followed.

His hamstring went once, then a second time. Meanwhile, he was feeling soreness in his right knee. Another operation was recommended, but he said no.

He eventually returned to the fold more permanently at the end of last season, making five appearances, all off the bench.

Fati was crying out for minutes, but Xavi insisted that the player who had thrived as a left winger should operate as a central striker.

Under that duress, Fati failed to score in just over 100 minutes of game time. He tallied five shots on target in five games as Barca's season fizzled out.

    Finally fit but not firing

But now, something uncharacteristic has happened: Fati is fully fit.

He has still endured the odd knock here, a muscle pull there. But he has made 40 appearances this season, scoring six and assisting four in all competitions.

And glimpses of the Fati of old remain. Goals against Cadiz, Villarreal and Real Betis offered hope. A standout performance against Intercity showed promise. His legs are slower, but the movement, runs and intelligence are still there.

But then, there have been the misses. He skied a free header against Man United that could have changed the fortunes of an unsuccessful European campaign. There was also an accidental block of his own team-mate's shot that would have given the Blaugrana a 2-0 aggregate lead over Real Madrid.

For all of those mistakes, Fati has been slammed by the press, pushed further out of the first-team picture at Camp Nou.

And now Barcelona are winning, Fati no longer has the time to fail. The misses count more than they did then, because there’s intense competition for places, particularly up front.

Playing for Barcelona is a ruthless thing; playing for a successful Barcelona is even more difficult. Fati is just a victim of the team's improvement under Xavi.

However, his struggles at club level are affecting his international prospects. Fati was also meant to be Spain's next great attacker but he didn't even make the squad for the start of La Roja's Euro 2024 qualification campaign.

Worse still, it's been reported that Luis Enrique was talking about Fati when he recently revealed that he regretted taking one player to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar…

– Alison é diferente do Jobson.

Morgan hails 'incredible' Root as England achieve lift-off

Saturday morning in Mumbai, and Eoin Morgan looked like a man whose adrenaline had finally worn off as he slumped into a suite overlooking the seafront of Marine Drive, and set about recounting the tale of a sensational contest. The late-night nature of the T20 itinerary, coupled with the visceral buzz of taking part in a contest of such magnitude, meant that there were one or two characters running on empty in the lobby of the team hotel as England gathered their belongings for a flight to Delhi and legs three and four of their campaign. But the glow of satisfaction was evident amid the exhaustion, as Morgan reflected on a victory that not only revived his team’s prospects of reaching the World T20 semi-finals, but served up incontrovertible proof of the squad’s commitment to fearless, no-consequences cricket.”We were just lucky to be a part of such an incredible match,” Morgan said. “It was the best chase I’ve been involved with in an England shirt – or in any shirt.”It was an illogically brilliant spectacle, featuring cannon-fodder seam bowling from England and South Africa alike, and a brace of Powerplay onslaughts from Quinton de Kock and Jason Roy that, had they been shown in a cinema rather than a stadium, might well have been censored for excessive violence. But the star of the show, and the star of an England team that continues to strain at the shackles imposed by two decades of arrested development in one-day cricket, was once again Joe Root. His flawless 83 from 44 balls brought a towering target of 230 down like a stack of Jenga blocks, and reaffirmed the growing belief that he is the most talented all-round batsman currently playing in the international game.”I can’t disagree with that,” Morgan said. “He is the most complete batsman we’ve ever had.”To use the same words I used to describe the game, he’s incredible really. His innings last night was so substantial, certainly in this team’s circumstances, it gives a huge amount of confidence to us knowing that he can go out and play the way he does without changing his game a great deal.”It shows his class and composure, to play the match as if it was a 50-over game or a Test match. It was a monumental innings, given the experience he showed. He has a young head on his shoulders but still comes out with an incredible amount of humility. It goes a very long way in our changing room.”Root was given a leg-up in the run-chase by the extraordinary efforts of Roy and Alex Hales, who smashed the first two overs of the innings for 21 and 23 runs respectively in the most expensive opening gambit ever seen in a T20I. But the manner in which he took the urgency out of the contest was Root’s most remarkable achievement. With a constant diet of singles to maintain the most basic direction of travel, Root punctuated his innings with six fours, four sixes and five twos, the net result being a run rate that poked along at the best part of two a ball without ever looking the slightest bit rushed.”It was very special,” Morgan said. “Probably the best chasing innings I’ve ever seen, and that says a lot, considering the players we’ve had in the past, and players I’ve played with. It was class, absolute class.”Other players might be quite one-dimensional in looking to get off strike or get a four, but he’s looking to diffuse it with any scoring option at all. And it seems to be always low-risk. He does hit sixes, he does hit fours, but it never seems to be a big issue. And the way he shifted the pressure from over to over was brilliant to watch.”The serenity of England’s pursuit was matched by the calm and calculating manner in which the team’s brains trust manipulated their batting order to ensure the best men for the moment were out in the middle at any given time. That included Morgan himself, whose 12 from 15 balls was far from his most fluent knock but came at a time when England didn’t need ballistics to stay ahead of the chase.Joe Root was the star of England’s World T20 record chase•Associated Press

“I am a huge believer that, in a huge total like that, you don’t chase it at the start of the game, you chase it in the last 10,” he said. “And once you are in the game, as long as you are kept in the game in the first ten, as long as you have guys at the back end who can keep you boxing to the latter rounds of the boxing match, you back yourself to see it home.”In particular, Morgan said that the negotiation of Imran Tahir had been critical to the cementing of England’s early dominance in the chase. The legspinner’s solitary wicket came in the final over of his spell, in contrast to the chaos he had inflicted in the latter stages of the limited-overs series in South Africa earlier this year.”We talked about it before coming to the game,” said Morgan. “He’s a vital part of their team, and one thing we did learn from the South Africa series as a whole was that when he takes wickets, he takes them in clumps. He’s a huge player in their bowling line-up in that regard.”England haven’t always been so flexible in their thinking – on many occasions in recent history, their one-day batting order has been treated with the sanctity of a holy relic. But under Morgan and Trevor Bayliss, the coach, a new dynamic has taken hold of the team tactics.”It’s a bit of an effort between the both of us,” said Morgan. “If you think of an idea you shout it. It’s quite an open conversation, certainly an open forum within the group. If somebody fancies it, they shout it, and that’s a good thing to have.”Despite the daunting challenge that England had been set at the halfway mark, Morgan insisted that there had been no doom and gloom in the dressing room as they sized up their chances of hunting down 230.”It was more about joking and messing around, and saying it’s going to be one hell of a chase if we chase it down,” he said. “When we chased down 350 against New Zealand [at Trent Bridge in 2015] it’s almost like we took the scoreboard out of the equation. And obviously in T20 cricket, the odds are more in your favour.”Nevertheless, for all Morgan’s bold assertions that the meat of the chase would come in the last 10 overs, nothing could prepare him for the launchpad that Hales and Roy erected.”We came out and did the complete opposite,” he said. “Alex Hales and Jason Roy started at 22 runs an over which was phenomenal really, I’ve never seen anything like it in my life and that’s what makes it so special. Two guys with absolute freedom to play, and backing themselves 100% to take any bad ball down and just react on a whim. It was quite phenomenal to watch.”I think last night creates a certain amount of belief within the side,” he added. “We aren’t necessarily a team that is vocal, we are a team that comes out and wants to produce. It’s important to get a win at the early stage of the tournament, but we’ve still only won one game out of two. But creating that belief early on is important for the side.”

Offspinner Mohammad Hafeez has once again been reported for a suspect action, following the conclusion of the Galle Test, the Pakistan team management has confirmed to ESPNcricinfo. Hafeez bowled 20 overs in the match and contributed two wickets to Pakistan’s ten-wicket victory in the first Test.According to the ICC’s regulations for bowlers reported a second time within a period of a year, if Hafeez’s action is found to be illegal once again he faces a bowling ban for a period of at least a year, only after which he will be eligible to apply for a reassessment of his action. He must undergo testing within 21 days of the receipt of the official report and will be allowed to bowl until the results are out. Hafeez will proceed to India to undergo testing after the second Test, which begins on June 25 in Colombo.Hafeez had been reported for a suspect action after the Abu Dhabi Test against New Zealand in November last year, and in December his action was found to be illegal following tests at an ICC accredited centre in Loughborough, England. He was found to have an elbow extension up to 31 degrees, far above the permitted limit of 15 degrees. He underwent remedial work at a biomechanics lab in Chennai, but failed an unofficial test on his action on January 3. Later that month the PCB requested the ICC to retest Hafeez’s action in February in Brisbane, so that he could bowl at the World Cup if cleared, but he was ruled out of the tournament with a calf injury. Hafeez was finally cleared to bowl again in international cricket on April 21, after more tests on his action in Chennai. Since then, he has bowled in nine matches in Bangladesh, at home against Zimbabwe, and in Sri Lanka.

The possibles to lead English cricket

The ECB have appointed Brian Havill as acting chief executive in addition to his role as their finance director and company secretary. The move follows the announcement that David Collier is standing down as chief executive at the end of the season.Havill has worked for the ECB since August 2000, having previously been commercial director of Pentland Group, a brand management British company, involved in the sports, outdoor and fashion markets. But he is not considered a serious contender to become the ECB’s new chief executive, here George Dobell assesses the candidates.Gordon Hollins (age 51)
The current chief operations officer of England cricket (he was appointed in March after several years in the role of managing director – professional game) is sure to be a strong candidate. Hollins, Scottish born and a member of the country’s Under-23 and B sides, has spent several years as commercial director with Durham and has almost unrivalled knowledge and experience of the business of cricket in the domestic game and understands better than anyone the conflicting demands and responsibilities of the ECB. Respected by the ECB executive and the counties, he may be seen as a little too studious and low-profile by an organisation keen to improve its public relations. But if competence is the key requirement, Hollins will be hard to beat.Wasim Khan (age 43)
The boy from the backstreets of Birmingham has developed into a highly personable, articulate and effective leader since becoming the first British-born Muslim to play county cricket. Wasim has been with the the Cricket Foundation since 2005 and is now its CEO and was previously a first-class player with Warwickshire, Sussex and Derbyshire. His critics will say he lacks experience of running a major business, but he has developed the Chance to Shine scheme into a £50m-a-year operation and has developed strong relationships in government (he sits on the Equality & Human Rights Commission Sports Group and The Prince’s Trust Cricket Group) and business along the way. It is generally regarded as the best scheme of its type in the world and the model by which all others should be judged. Young, media savvy and well-respected as an ambassador for the game and man manager, Wasim possesses an enviable package of skills. He was awarded an MBE in 2013.Steve Elworthy (age 49)
As an international cricketer with a strong record in administration – he was the key figure behind England successfully hosting the 2009 World T20 and the 2013 Champions Trophy – Elworthy has a strong CV and has to be considered a serious candidate. After four Tests and 39 ODIs for his native South Africa, Elworthy graduated to the role of commercial and communications manager for Cricket South Africa. He was appointed tournament director for the inaugural World T20 in South Africa and can be held partially responsible for the format’s growth and popularity. He was appointed director of marketing and communications by the ECB in 2010, but that position was recently changed – some might say downgraded – to manager of global events and marketing. A lack of business experience also may be perceived as a weakness, though after the debacle of the 2007 World Cup, the successful staging of global cricket events should never be taken for granted.David Smith (age 58)
The current chief executive of Northamptonshire should be an ideal candidate. A former first-class cricketer – he represented Warwickshire for more than a decade – he then enjoyed a successful career in business (he was a board member of First Leisure) before returning to cricket as CEO at Leicestershire and then Northants. Despite recent evidence, both sides strengthened on and off field during his watch. A man of strong opinions, though, he has antagonised a few on his way – he resigned from both the ECB’s cricket committee and Leicestershire in protest at one thing or another – and might be seen as a threat to some. He is though, understood to be highly regarded by the ECB chairman Giles Clarke, and others who believe the ECB could do with a shake-up. He is far from certain to apply.Could Derek Brewer, here on the right, switch from the MCC to the ECB?•Getty Images

Richard Gould (age 44)
The favourite for the job. Gould, an approachable, open and relatively young man who would improve the ECB’s public image, built a strong relationship with Clarke during his time as CEO of Somerset (2005-2011; Clarke was partially instrumental in his appointment) and, since moving to Surrey, has overseen a thriving off-field business which remains easily the most successful of the 18 first-class counties. The lack of success of the Surrey team is a stain on his record, though, as is the departure of Chris Adams and all the issues connected with it. A former officer in the British Army – he served in the 1st Royal Tank Regiment from 1990-2001 – who studied through the Harvard Business School and also spent time working in football (he was commercial director of Bristol City between 2001-2005), it might be noted he remains a friend of Kevin Pietersen and served in the army with his manager, Adam Wheatley. Very likely to apply; conspiracy theorists believe the job is already as good as his.Colin Povey (age 53)
The Warwickshire chief executive is the man most responsible for the redevelopment of Edgbaston from decaying dinosaur to a stadium good enough to host the final of the ICC Champions Trophy. Tough but straight, Povey was previously CEO at Carlsberg and an international water polo player and coach, so he also has the desired track record in sport and business. One well-placed ECB source rated him “the favourite” for the role. But his relationship with Clarke is poor – Povey was one of those who met Lalit Modi during the years the counties considered a T20 franchise model based upon the IPL – while Warwickshire’s indebtedness might not sit well in the eyes of some.Warren Deutrom (age 44)
An excellent record in cricket administration renders Deutrom a serious candidate. He has been CEO of Cricket Ireland since December 2006, but was previously cricket events manager at the ICC (between 2002-2006) and the ECB (1998-2002). In that time, he has built up strong relationships with both organisations and he is much admired for the work he has done with Ireland. But whether his strong links with Associate cricket and cricket in Europe will do him many favours in the eyes of the recruiters remains to be seen. He has also worked in sales and in journalism.Derek Brewer (age 55)
The current CEO of the MCC would be a strong candidate should he apply. Highly regarded for his integrity, his diligence and his decency, he oversaw the redevelopment of Trent Bridge having succeeded David Collier as chief executive in 2005 and won an impressive package of major matches for the ground. He moved to the MCC in April 2012 where he has continued the work of his predecessor in ensuring the old club’s relevance in the contemporary game and sustaining the modernisation process. Life has not been easy, with a persistent group of critics biting at his heels and the ground redevelopment becoming an ever-more poisonous, political situation. He worked in banking for more than 20 years before moving into cricket and also represented Warwickshire second XI as an offspinner. Again, he is far from certain to apply and may feel he has a duty to push through many of the reforms he has begun at Lord’s.Hugh Morris (age 50)
