Suresh Raina, the India A captain, made up for his first-innings failure with a murderous assault on the New Zealand A bowling to set them a target of 355. Raina smashed 146 off 130 balls with ten fours and eight sixes, including five of them in one Aaron Redmond over, before New Zealand regrouped to trigger a lower-order collapse. In reply, New Zealand lost BJ Watling early and ended the day on a cautious note at 41 for 1.Raina’s partnership with M Vijay gave India the initiative as New Zealand failed to get early breakthroughs. The pair added a 83 in just under 15 overs before Vijay fell for 57, caught by Peter Fulton off Redmond. As Raina continued his assault, most of the middle-order partnerships progressed at more than five runs an over, thereby signaling India’s intent to push for a challenging target. Redmond was the most expensive of the lot, leaking more than seven an over in his 12-over spell.Raina’s dismissal, caught by James Marshall off Nathan McCullum, had a telling effect on India’s progress. Brent Arnel, the right-arm seamer, plugged away at the wickets as India lost their last five wickets for just 18 runs. Arnel was on a hat-trick in the 83rd over of the innings. With the first two deliveries, he got rid of Amit Mishra and Mohnish Parmar and nabbed his third victim, Ashok Dinda, off the last ball of that over. Wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha resisted with 39 before being bowled by Arnel, bringing the innings to a close at 336.Redmond and Watling added 22 before Parmar, the offspinner, trapped Watling for 6 in the 11th over. New Zealand batted out the remaining seven overs and went into the final day needing a further 314 to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

White: Youcef Atal would be a good signing for Crystal Palace

Nice right-back Youcef Atal would be a good signing for Crystal Palace, Ligue 1 expert Adam White has told The Transfer Tavern.

Atal worked under Patrick Vieira during the Frenchman’s time in the Allianz Riviera dugout and is now being touted for a reunion at Selhurst Park.

According to Foot Afrique, Palace have made signing Atal a priority as they look to improve their defence further, already bringing in central defenders Marc Guehi and Joachim Andersen.

For White of Get French Football News, who has compared Atal to legendary right-back Dani Alves, his acquisition could be very clever business by Palace.

“His first season under Vieira at Nice, he was absolutely brilliant,” White said. “Maybe Vieira’s thinking he’s a quality player and despite those injuries, he’s still a really good option.

“He’d be good for a team like Palace. Even if you play him at right-back in a four, he’s still quite a threat. There’s that sort of Dani Alves vibes there.”

This is not the first time Atal has been linked with a move to the Premier League. Back in 2019, The Telegraph reported that Chelsea had made the 25-year-old a target, only for their transfer ban to put a spanner in the works.

With his former manager now at Palace, perhaps Atal may finally make that move to English football.

Alan Nixon drops worrying Mel Morris claim

Derby County owner Mel Morris is yet to provide the EFL with assurances of his financial backing.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Alan Nixon’s report for The Sun on Sunday (via The 72), with the journalist revealing that the Rams owner appears to be stalling over providing the EFL with proof that he can afford to financially run Derby for the 2021/22 Championship season.

The journalist continues by stating that, as a direct result of the chairman’s apparent unwillingness to corporate with the governing body, Wayne Rooney is not able to offer four players contracts to join his Rams side for the current campaign.

Indeed, Nixon goes on to claim that the club’s current transfer embargo will not be eased until Morris has proven he has sufficient funds in order to pay tax bills, as well as being able to make payments to former Derby employees.

Fans will be fuming

Derby fans will not need reminding that Rooney is operating with something of a skeleton squad at Pride Park, with the 35-year-old currently being able to pick from just 15 fit first-team players – something that has not been helped by the recent injury sustained by Colin Kazim-Richards.

Indeed, it is evident that the former England international is in rather desperate need of additions this summer, and, with the likes of  Sam Baldock, Tom Carroll, Phil Jagielka and Andre Wisdom believed to be in training with the club, it would seem as if Rooney has identified a number of targets he would like to bring in.

However, with it now being apparent that the 35-year-old has not been able to complete these signings as a direct result of his own chairman’s actions, Rooney, as well as fans of the club, should rightly be fuming with Morris.

Having said that, if the owner simply does not have the proof that he can fund the club for the current season, then this anger could quickly turn into legitimate fear about the future of the Rams, as the club could quite feasibly find themselves placed into administration in the not too distant future – something that no football fan, Derby or otherwise, would like to see.

Celtic: Carter-Vickers likely to sign

Tottenham defender Cameron Carter-Vickers is likely to sign for Celtic before the transfer window slams shut, according to The Daily Star.

The Hoops have been linked with a move to bring the towering centre-back to Parkhead during the current window.

American journalist Larry Henry Jr has shared three updates on the 23-year-old’s future, all of which have name-checked Celtic with an interest.

His first cited the Hoops’ interest, the second suggested the race was down to Celtic, Bournemouth and Newcastle and the third appeared to take the Cherries out of the race.

The Latest: Newcastle interest

The Daily Star’s Aaron Rodgers shared a story regarding a number of Newcastle targets on Thursday lunchtime.

Within his report, Rodgers said Carter-Vickers is wanted by the Magpies. However, he then added that the USA international is ‘likely to join Celtic’ – an interesting four-word update.

The Verdict: A risk

Tottenham are confident they will receive £5m for Carter-Vickers this summer, despite the defender having less than 12 months left on his deal, and it seems as if the Hoops could be the side to match that figure going off recent reports.

Carter-Vickers, on £20,000-a-week with Spurs, has never played Premier League football, so if Celtic do pay Tottenham’s asking price, it could be a risky move.

Ange Postecoglou has just Carl Starfelt, Stephen Welsh and Osaze Urhoghide as fit senior centre-back options at the moment following Kris Ajer’s move to Brentford, so it does appear as if another defender is needed.

Carter-Vickers, who can also play as a right-back, could be that man according to The Daily Star, so it may well be a deal to keep a close eye on over the coming weeks.

Aston Villa make Arnaut Danjuma enquiry

An update has emerged regarding Aston Villa’s interest in Bournemouth forward Arnaut Danjuma.

What’s the talk?

According to Football League World, Villa have shown an interest in signing the 24-year-old from the Cherries this summer to bolster their attacking options. Johan Lange is said to have made an enquiry to the Championship club over his availability.

Bournemouth’s stance on his situation has not been revealed, but the report states that the attacker has not made a final decision on his future. The Netherlands international would be open to moving abroad and playing in mainland Europe if he is not able to find a new club in England.

Forget Smith-Rowe

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Villa have no chance of signing Emile Smith-Rowe from Arsenal this summer. Mikel Arteta believes that the Englishman will remain at the Emirates Stadium despite interest from Dean Smith’s side and sign a contract extension with the Gunners.

This means that the time is right for Villa to move on from Smith-Rowe and concentrate on landing another target in Danjuma.

The 24-year-old enjoyed a sensational season in the Championship with the Cherries as he was directly involved in 24 goals in 31 starts. He plundered an impressive 17 goals and seven assists as Bournemouth made the play-offs before being knocked out by eventual winners Brentford in the semi-finals.

Earlier this year, Clinton Morrison lavished praise on the Dutchman, calling him an exceptional talent and saying that he will be playing in the Premier League one way or another next season.

He told Quest, via Football League World: “Danjuma is an excellent player. Whatever happens, he will be playing Premier League football next year, whether it’s with Bournemouth or without them. He’s an exceptional talent.”

Morrison’s comments and his statistics in the second tier suggest that he has the potential to make the step up to the Premier League next season. He averaged 1.5 key passes and 1.8 dribbles per Championship game for Bournemouth, showing that he has a direct style of play and indicating that could excite fans with his runs down the wing.

Smith could love working the Dutchman as he might offer him a different option to Jack Grealish on the left flank next term. The England international likes to get on the ball and dictate the play, drawing fouls and creating openings, which could open up space on the left for Danjuma to come in and offer himself out wide to stretch the play. Therefore, Smith could enjoy having a variety of options, and this is why Villa must land him this summer.

Rangers reject Porto’s bid for Morelos

Rangers have now rejected a bid from Porto for the services of star striker Alfredo Morelos.

The Lowdown: Morelos’ future up in the air

The Colombian has been a superb player for the Gers, helping them win the Scottish Premiership title last season and scoring 94 goals in 182 appearances for the club.

Morelos’ current deal may not expire until the summer of 2023, but he has been constantly linked with a summer exit, and it does sort of feel like a matter of when and how much, rather than if.

The Latest: Porto bid rejected

Porto are seemingly one of the most interested parties, and according to journalist Ekrem Konur on Twitter, they have now seen a bid for the striker turned down.

It is stated that Rangers ‘will be in no hurry to sell’ Morelos, which is no great surprise, considering the influence he has enjoyed at Ibrox, with Steven Gerrard describing him as ‘top class’.

The Verdict: Tough to keep hold of him

In an ideal world, Morelos would stay put with the Gers for years to come, spearheading countless titles charges and improving even more as a player.

It will of course be hard to keep hold of the £10.8million-rated attacker, though, as he looks to potentially test himself in a harder league moving forward and prove himself as one of the very best at a higher level than the Premiership.

For now, it is encouraging to see the club being stubborn about letting him go, and if/when he does eventually move on, Gerrard will at least be given a hefty amount to spend on new signings as it seems the club will hold out for every last penny.

Duncan Fletcher points to missed chances in Brisbane

When England coach Duncan Fletcher spoke to the press at the end of the first day’s play in the Brisbane Test, he blamed missed opportunities for the fact that his side found themselves on the wrong end of a commanding Australian batting display

CricInfo07-Nov-2002When England coach Duncan Fletcher spoke to the press at the end of the first day’s play in the Brisbane Test, he blamed missed opportunities for the fact that his side found themselves on the wrong end of a commanding Australian batting display.Three of the chances to which he referred involved Matthew Hayden who finished the day undefeated on 186. However, he was nearly caught when he had 40, but Simon Jones at long leg found his momentum taking him over the boundary as he held the catch. The opener had moved on to 102 when Matthew Hoggard made an awful mess of getting in position under a skyer at mid-off and hardly laid a hand on the ball as it thumped into the turf. Next it was Michael Vaughan’s turn when Hayden had reached 132. Normally one of the safest fielders in the side, Vaughan grassed a straightforward chance off Craig White.Referring to those missed chances, Fletcher said: “Every opportunity that is given to you, you have to grab and we didn’t do that today.”He also defended Nasser Hussain’s decision to field first on winning the toss. “We thought it looked a little bit green and there was some softness and we thought we could help our bowlers but it didn’t really move off the wicket,” Fletcher said.”We thought the pitch would get better to bat on and we have to make sure when we get out there we bat the best we can.”Fletcher also commented on the sickening injury that befell Jones in the field. “The team were pretty upset about it. I don’t think they realised how serious it was, but there was some concern especially because he was just beginning to offer us something.”We believed he was the kind of bowler that Nasser has been calling for that can do something different to the rest of the attack.Kirk Russell, the England physiotherapist, said that there is no reason that the Glamorgan fast bowler should not make a complete recovery from his cruciate ligament injury after an operation.”Surgery is fantastic these days and so is rehabilitation. I know what he’s like and he’ll work very hard. He will get the treatment back in England and I’m sure he’ll be back as good as new.”Initially I was more worried about his left knee when I first saw it because he took a big divot out of the ground with that. When you see it so quickly and you’re there so quickly you think that maybe it’s a fracture because I’ve never seen this type of injury in cricket before – it’s a freak accident.”It was Ricky Ponting, who made 123, who drove the ball that Jones was chasing when he suffered the injury. He had been impressed by what he had seen of Jones before the accident.”It’s very disappointing for him and the England team what’s happened to him today. He showed a bit, he’s obviously got some good pace and Perth would have suited him down to the ground as well.”He showed early this morning by claiming a wicket in his first spell and it’s very bad luck for him.”
