Gayle sends Benn from the field

Sulieman Benn has riled opponents and match referees in the past, but he has hit a new low after being ordered off the field by his captain Chris Gayle. During West Indies’ seven-wicket loss to South Africa in Dominica, Benn upset Gayle so much by failing to follow instructions that he was told he was no longer required.”I actually asked him to leave the field,’ Gayle told reporters after the game. “As a captain, it was a situation like you ask a particular bowler to do it and he said he had never done certain things before. That’s why you have practice sessions, to practise. I asked him to simply bowl over the wicket. I don’t see why it should be a problem.”He wasn’t up for it and if you’re not up for it, why give that particular bowler the ball. I just see it that he [Benn] doesn’t want to take part. It was my call to actually ask him to leave and tell him that he is not needed anymore.”Benn’s behavioural issues came to a head during the Perth Test in December, when he was suspended for two ODIs following a clash with Mitchell Johnson and Brad Haddin. He had previously been fined and forced to have counselling after what was labelled “insubordinate” behaviour during a West Indies A tour of England in 2002.His fiery nature has also been on display at club level, when he was fined after an altercation with an opponent while batting for his Barbados club Spartan. It is unclear whether Benn will play any part in the fifth and final ODI against South Africa in Trinidad on Thursday. The fourth ODI had a dramatic finish with Dwayne Bravo bowling three consecutive dot balls in the final over, leaving South Africa with one to get off the last delivery. AB de Villiers then played the ball to midwicket and sprinted the single as Darren Sammy fumbled. Gayle praised Bravo for his bowling effort but said that, despite making 303, West Indies should have scored a lot more.”Credit must go to Bravo for the way he bowled the final over,” Gayle said. “But to get 300 runs, and lose was not good. We should have scored at least 30 or 40 more runs based on the start that Dale [Richards] and I gave the team, but we were very disappointing in the middle overs again, too many dot balls. We also missed a few catches, and this is the inconsistency. At times, we do well with the bat, and then turn up and do something completely different with the ball.”

Leeds suffer transfer blow

Leeds United have been dealt a huge setback in their pursuit of long-time target Nahitan Nandez…

What’s the word?

The Yorkshire outfit have regularly been linked with a move for the Cagliari midfielder, having been mooted during the summer window, as per L’Unione Sarda (via Sport Witness).

Director of football Victor Orta was even said to have flown out to Sardinia to try and strike a deal.

And earlier this month, other reports from Italy suggested that the Whites were ‘leading the race’ to sign the 26-year-old before deadline day on January 31st.

However, Leeds have now been dealt a late blow with just eight days to go as financial heavyweights Newcastle United have entered the race, according to Tuttosport.

After their takeover earlier in the season, the Magpies have huge backing from the Saudi Public Investment Fund, making them fierce competitors to Nandez’s signature, especially as there is a lack of funds at Elland Road.

“They don’t have fortunes to throw around at the moment,” recently claimed transfer insider Dean Jones to GIVEMESPORT this week.

Perfect for Bielsa

Thus, this latest development will come as a massive blow to Bielsa and Leeds, not at least because they are absolutely desperate to get in reinforcements for the engine room.

They have not signed a midfielder since January 2018, when Adam Forshaw joined from Middlesbrough, which is rather damning in itself, whilst Bielsa will be without the services of star anchorman Kalvin Phillips until March, at the very earliest.

Nandez would be an astute addition and one that is perfect for the Argentine’s tactical system. He certainly fits the atypical profile.

As we’ve previously outlined on Football FanCast, the Uruguay international would be something of a dream signing for Bielsa.

Standing at a diminutive 5 foot 7, the midfield dynamo is a powerful and bustling presence in midfield, leading to him being dubbed a “machine” by Serie A expert Conor Clancy.

This season, he’s averaged 2.3 aerial duels, 1.9 tackles and 1.4 dribbles per league outing (via WhoScored), which suggests he’s not just a ball-winning beast but one that can quickly get up the pitch.

But Leeds simply won’t be able to compete with the Magpies, who splashed a whopping £25m on Chris Wood just to get him in time for their clash at Watford last week and then Elland Road on Saturday afternoon.

It paid off with Eddie Howe’s men securing just their second win of the season. They will be able to offer Cagliari a better fee and the player a better financial package, so it seems as if Bielsa and co may well struggle to land one of their key targets.

On the above evidence, this will surely leave the 66-year-old absolutely livid as his club are no closer to additions this month, especially after previously insisting to sign Nandez.

AND in other news, Bielsa could land his own Conor Gallagher in Leeds swoop for “silky” 15-cap sensation…

Hamilton Masakadza celebrates his half-century against Mashonaland Eagles in the final•Zimbabwe Cricket

Zimbabwe Cricket has expressed delight at record attendances for the Stanbic Bank 20 Series which finished last weekend. The final at Harare Sports Club on Saturday attracted a crowd of around 7500 which is the biggest for a domestic match in living memory. It represented a triumph for the board following its decision to revamp the domestic structure at the start of the season. In recent years attendances for any kind of match, including internationals, have more often than not been in the hundreds rather than thousands. However, crowds for the midweek matches in the nine-day tournament were low and Shingai Rhuhwaya, ZC’s head of media and communications, said it was “a pity that more schools did not take up the invitation to attend”.She added: “Schools cricket is the lifeblood of the future, and it can only be hoped that, after the success of this tournament, more of the schools will be prompted to bring parties of their pupils during the week.”Certainly the pupils who did attend appeared to have a great time and helped to create some atmosphere with their enthusiasm and cheering. Over the first weekend it was estimated that about 6000 attended in total over the two days.”

Superb UAE win three out of three

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
UAE had already qualified to the Super Fours before this match but there was no letting up in their final league game, whipping Canada by 42 runs to send them home winless. After being sent in to bat, UAE got off to a cracking start, thanks to opener Mohammad Iqbal’s 10-ball 17. Things were a little less frenetic once Iqbal was dismissed in the fourth over but his opening partner, Arfan Haider, kept Canada on the back foot with his 46.He and Saqib Ali piloted UAE to 87 for 2 in the 13th over, and Ali took over once Haider was bowled by John Davison. Ali needed only 29 deliveries for his 43 before he became the first victim of a Khurram Chohan double-strike in the 19th over.Canada’s chase of 143 was rocked by the loss of their experienced openers, Davison and Rizwan Cheema, in the first two overs. There was a steadying third-wicket stand of 35 between captain Ashish Bagai and Geoff Barnett but Canada’s chase were virtually extinguished when they lost three wickets for one run in the space of 12 balls to slide to 49 for 5.The procession continued after that as well and, with only Umar Bhatti and Saad bin Zafar reaching double figures, Canada were bowled out in the 16th over.

Hughes retained, Katich in doubt for Hobart

Simon Katich remains in doubt for the Hobart Test against Pakistan with an elbow injury, forcing the selectors to again name Phillip Hughes as a backup opener. Australia named an unchanged 13-man squad for the final Test of the home summer, giving Marcus North a reprieve despite a string of low scores. The remarkable series-winning victory at the SCG discouraged the selectors from making any alterations, allowing North another opportunity to turn around his form after scores of 1, 8, 10 and 2 in his past two Tests. The main query surrounds Katich, who missed the Sydney Test due to his elbow problem.Hughes did not fully grab his chance back in the Test side, with a first-innings duck and 37 in the second innings. The likelihood of Hughes playing at Bellerive, where the Test starts next Thursday, depends on how Katich performs when he bats in the nets in Hobart early next week.”Simon has been having regular treatment on his arm injury since being ruled out of the Sydney Test and will travel to Hobart with the squad where he will continue his rehabilitation,” Australia’s physio Alex Kountouris said. “A decision on his availability will be made closer to the start of the Test in Hobart after he’s had an opportunity to bat in the nets to test his injury.”Katich was Australia’s leading Test run scorer in 2009, with 1111 runs at 48.30, and he is averaging 57.42 in Tests this home summer. One of the SCG heroes, Peter Siddle, was confident Katich could shake the injury in time.”He’s come in a few times in the last couple of days to get some treatment and see Alex and work with him,” Siddle said. “I haven’t spoken to him too much about it but I’d be pretty confident. He’s a strong fella and he’s very wiling to work hard to get back out there. We’ve still got a fair bit of time before day one.”Squad Shane Watson, Simon Katich, Phillip Hughes, Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Hussey, Michael Clarke, Marcus North, Brad Haddin (wk), Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Hauritz, Peter Siddle, Clint McKay, Doug Bollinger.

Emotional Angelo Mathews rues missed century

Angelo Mathews has admitted he was emotional after missing out by one run on his maiden Test century but said the experience would help him improve his game and be more careful the next time around

Cricinfo staff03-Dec-2009Angelo Mathews has admitted he was emotional after missing out on his maiden Test century by one run, but said the experience – he was run out – would help him improve his game and be more careful the next time around.”A first Test hundred is a big achievement for any cricketer,” he said. “It was very unfortunate I could not get it. But then that’s how it goes.”Mathews was short of his crease going for a second run after he pulled a ball from Sreesanth and set off for two but failed to beat Sachin Tendulkar’s throw from deep square leg to wicketkeeper MS Dhoni. The decision was referred to the third umpire and after what must have been an agonizing three minutes, Mathews was given the red light.”I thought there were two runs but I creased the bat deep on my first run, which is why I was run out.”Back in the dressing room I thought about for a bit longer. Then I recovered when we went out to the field. There were a few tears in my eyes as well but all the senior players rallied around me and said that it was part of the game. They told me I’d get more opportunities to score runs… It will make me more determined to score runs and to be careful the next time.”Mathews’ wicket led to Sri Lanka’s innings folding after 27 minutes in the day, after which India, led by Virender Sehwag, pulverised 443 off 79 overs by stumps. However, Mathews was optimistic that Sri Lanka could make a comeback in the Test.”India haven’t won this game, it’s just a matter of two to three wickets tomorrow morning and then we can get right back into it. There are three more days left and anything can happen.”When Sri Lanka resumed their first innings at 366 for 8, the plan was to score as many runs as possible. “I knew that Murali and Chanaka (Welagedera) can hang around a bit and with their support I wanted to get as much runs as possible for the team,” Mathews said.He came into the Test on the back of several batting failures but said he was not under any pressure from outside. “I was under pressure when I came into the Test as I had failed in my last three innings. I had to score some runs and get into some form and perform for the team. [But] There was no pressure for me to perform from outside or from the team, it was just that I had to prove that, playing as a number six batsman, I should score runs.”The team management doesn’t put pressure on me. They tell me to go out there and enjoy the game. I personally felt that I needed to score some runs for the team.”

West Ham fans flock to Ex news on Kretinksy

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have been left talking after reliable club insider ExWHUemployee’s claim involving new shareholder Daniel Kretinsky.

Kretinsky’s investment into the club, said to be worth over £180 million, has been tipped by reliable reports to bolster manager David Moyes’ transfer backing – even if it won’t be a lavish spending spree (Evening Standard).

As the January transfer window approaches, it will certainly be an interesting period as all eyes turn to whether Moyes will indeed see his targets come in mid-season.

ExWHUemployee, sharing news on how Kretinksy could make this happen, has now dropped a promising claim on his West Ham Way Podcast.

He claims it is said that the magnate’s investment means there will certainly be funds available for transfers – not huge amounts, but more than West Ham have dealt with in previous seasons.
