Alec Stewart will walk out on his favourite ground tomorrow to become England’s most-capped Test cricketer. The first Test against India at Lord’s will be Stewart’s 119th for England, beating the record set by Graham Gooch. At the start of this season few would have backed Stewart to equal Gooch’s record, let alone beat it, after James Foster was named as England’s centrally-contracted wicket-keeper. But Foster’s misfortune in breaking an arm in the nets in April reopened the door to the 39 year-old from Surrey, who has taken full advantage.Stewart is now likely to enjoy a final tilt at the old enemy in this winter’s Ashes series, and the World Cup that follows in South Africa next February.”The first (Test) is always your biggest cap because every schoolboy wants to play for their country,” Stewart said. “I’ve never been as nervous as when I went out to bat in Jamaica on my debut, but once you get that you then want morebecause you enjoy the occasion.”There’s a thrill about playing for England and a thrill about testing yourself against the best from other countries and that almost spurs you on to want more of it.”Some people get intimidated but others seem to thrive on the full houses andthe big occasions and fortunately I put myself in that category – the morepeople watching and the bigger the occasion the more I like to respond.”He rates that debut among the highlights of his career, along with the Test in Barbados in 1994 when he became the first England player ever to score centuries in both innings of a Test against West Indies, and leading England to a series victory over South Africa four years ago.World Cup campaigns feature among the low points, including the final defeat in 1992 and the campaigns in 1996 and 1999, alongside his failure to come even close to winning the Ashes.Stewart’s parents, Micky and Sheila, will be at Lord’s for the occasion, which will be marked by a presentation to him from captain Nasser Hussain before play starts.”I’ll be trying to treat it like any other Test match, but when you see the list of people I’ve gone past like Gooch, Gower, Geoff Boycott, Ian Botham andColin Cowdrey they are England cricket legends and that’s quite an achievementto have done that,” he said. With the squad beset by injuries to Andrew Caddick, Marcus Trescothick, Alex Tudor and Darren Gough, England coach Duncan Fletcher said Glamorgan’s Simon Jones has “a strong chance” of making his Test debut, although Yorkshire’s ChrisSilverwood is on standby in case of further injuries.Meanwhile, the Indian tourists had the day off yesterday, following their win over Hampshire at Southampton, but the touring party attended an award dinner last night in which star batsman Sachin Tendulkar was named as the fans’ choice for Indian cricketer of the century. The official cricketer of the century was named in Wisden Asia’s ceremony asall-rounder Kapil Dev, but Tendulkar, 29, who equalled Sir Donald Bradman’s record of 29 Test centuries earlier this year, came out on top in the voting polls.Tendulkar came out ahead of Sunil Gavaskar, who holds the record number of centuries in Test cricket, 34 in 125 Tests.Tendulkar said: “It’s a great honour to receive this award. Travelling with the team is like a home-from-home for me and they offer me tremendous support in what I try to achieve as a cricketer.”

Nat-West U16 League – Fair Oak wide of the mark

Fair Oak’s young bowlers conceded a staggering 87 wides on the opening night of the NatWest Bank Under-16 Indoor Development League at the Hampshire Rose Bowl

Mike Vimpany29-Oct-2002Fair Oak’s young bowlers conceded a staggering 87 wides on the opening night of the NatWest Bank Under-16 Indoor Development League at the Hampshire Rose Bowl.It cost last winter’s champions dear against Basingstoke & North Hants and almost wrecked their chances of beating an inexperienced Andover side.Fair Oak fancied their chances of nailing Basingstoke after Richard Featherstone (33) had improved on a sound opening partnership between Ed White (30) and Ed Kemp (27) to post a handy 136-5.But their efforts were wasted as Fair Oak gifted Basingstoke 54 runs in wides alone – and lost the game by two wickets with an over to spare.Hampshire Academy all-rounder Mitchell Stokes hit 25 and then scored 26 in his team’s four-wicket win over Andover.Fair Oak were almost as profligate against Andover, who came within nine runs of overhauling a challenging 137-5.Featherstone (35 not out) again top scored, but Ollie Williams (27) and Chris Hadfield (26) profited from some erratic bowling and took Andover’s reply to 128-2.Results:
Andover 111 (Hadfield 22, Williams 2-14)
Basingstoke & North Hants 112-2 (Stokes 26, Williams 25)Fair Oak 137-5 (Featherstone 35)
Andover 128-2 (Williams 27, Hadfield 26)Fair Oak 136-5 (Featherstone 33, White 30, Kemp 27)

Graham Roberts tips Steven Gerrard to bolster Rangers squad

Graham Roberts has backed boss Steven Gerrard to bolster his Rangers side as they seek back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles.

Rangers stopped arch-rivals Celtic from being crowned champions for a 10th consecutive season by finishing top of the pile last term.

Rather than resting on his laurels, former Liverpool captain Gerrard has made it his mission to ensure his side dominates the Scottish top flight for a second campaign in succession.

Gerrard has been linked with making a move for 23-year-old Vitesse Arnhem defender Danilho Doekhi, while Dutch midfielder Joey Veerman has criticised his current club, Heerenveen, for potentially pricing Rangers out of lodging a bid for his services.

Although Gerrard is keen to strengthen his squad, Rangers’ title win has resulted in clubs taking an interest in their stars.

The Gers have reportedly rejected a bid from Cagliari for Alfredo Morelos and Finland international Glen Kamara is being tracked by West Ham United and Everton.

Roberts, who had a two-year spell at Ibrox during his playing days, insists Rangers are in a strong position ahead of the new season getting underway.

He exclusively told The Transfer Tavern: “Rangers proved last year they were the best team and it’s up to everybody to catch up now.

“I’m sure Steven will have a few names on the list to bring in and hopefully he does.”

Northern Districts has a boom in playing numbers

Northern Districts cricket official are enjoying a boom period in numbers participating in their region. The New Zealand Cricket census has shown a 45% increase in adult players in the region, or 8000 people playing in recognised competitions.ND administrator Pat Malcon said there was a slight increase in the numbers playing on Saturday but there was also an increase in business house, mid-week and masters cricket.Junior numbers showed an 11% increase with a 39% increase in numbers of boys playing to 12,666 and 22% among girls to 2143.Malcon said there were factors associated with the strategic plan that has been implemented that were responsible for the growth.”A regional network of development managers and development officers promoting the game in primary and secondary schools has been part of that.”Last season there were three full-time development managers and 30 part-time development managers in the region.”The enhanced profile of women’s cricket since the CricInfo Women’s World Cup victory in 2000 was another factor. The selection of young ND players Louise Milliken and Nicola Browne in the TelstraClear White Ferns had been another boost for local players. The Milo Have A Go programme for six to eight-year-olds had also had an impact. There are now 40 Have A Go centres in ND.New competitions have also been implemented with the Waikato Secondary Schools’ competition with 20 schools taking part being an example.”The next challenge is retaining the increased number of junior players in the game by providing relevant competitions on high quality pitches, and giving quality coaching.”Another challenge is to cater for the increasing number of adult players who wish to play cricket on days other than Saturday, which is now a working day for many people,” he said.

Celtic: Olivier Ntcham linked with surprise move to AEK Athens

Olivier Ntcham has been offered a surprise Celtic escape route by Greek side AEK Athens, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

The Lowdown: Disastrous 12 months for Ntcham

Ntcham hasn’t had an easy ride of things in the last year or so. In a sparkling 2019/20 campaign at Parkhead, he registered 12 goal contributions in 39 outings [Transfermarkt].

Linked with moves away around that time to Porto and Marseille, Ex-Celt John Collins pleaded for Celtic to keep the playmaker; stating “Olivier is an excellent player and I’d be sad to see him leave Scottish football that’s for sure.”

Fast forward to 2020/21, the midfielder suddenly started finding his opportunities limited under former Hoops manager Neil Lennon. Only starting 11 fixtures [Transfermarkt], the 25-year-old was loaned in January 2021 to Ligue 1 outfit Marseille in order to obtain first team football [Daily Record].

This backfired in disastrous fashion, as then Marseille boss Andre Villas Boas was sensationally sacked from the French giants for bemoaning Ntcham’s signature [talkSPORT].

The Latest: Glasgow return could be short lived

A benchwarmer on loan in France, the former French youth international is now scheduled to return to Glasgow this summer.

AEK Athens are now firmly believed to be focused on signing Ntcham. His current deal with Celtic is set to expire in summer 2022 [Transfermarkt].

The Athenians are willing to offer him nearly £20,000 per week to move to Greece [The Scottish Sun].

More importantly for the Hoops though, they will offer an immediate fee for his signature, quite the relief considering the club was considering terminating his contract and losing him for nothing, but could now sell and boost their own transfer kitty.

Verdict: Good business for Celtic, AEK and Ntcham

Fundamentally, this could represent good business for both Celtic and AEK Athens. Though mercurially talented, Ntcham has been a peripheral figure at Parkhead for quite some time, and it feels like a win-win-win to grant the Hoops a fee for his services, AEK a quality player with age on his side, and Ntcham himself a fresh start.

Receiving a decent sum of money for his services could go a long way to kickstarting a much needed reconstruction of a fragmented Celtic side, as they look to reinforce a squad that finished miles behind Rangers last season.

In other news, Alan Brazil has had his say on a new potential Celtic appointment.

Newcastle’s Saint-Maximin outdid Willock vs SHU

Ever since that 3-0 defeat to Brighton, something appears to have just clicked with Newcastle United in the Premier League, with the Magpies picking up another win against Sheffield United on Wednesday night.

Steve Bruce’s side have now lost just twice since the 20th March, and have picked up 14 points in that process, including some really notable results against the likes of Liverpool, Leicester and West Ham.

Against the Blades yesterday, it was Joe Willock once again who proved to be the match-winner, meaning that the Arsenal loanee has now bagged in the last six Premier League games where he has been on the pitch.

And while his signing will no doubt be a priority this summer – Bruce himself has said as much in recent weeks – it was Allan Saint-Maximin’s display that showed why the Frenchman has got to be the man the Magpies continue to build around.

The mercurial winger was almost back to his bamboozling best against Sheffield United, twisting this way and that, and always looking like he could cut open the Blades defence like a knife through butter.

As per Sofascore, his 8.1 match rating was the highest of any player on the pitch, and when you look at some of the underlying numbers it’s easy to see why.

He completed a whopping 15 of his 16 dribbles on the night – yes, you read that correctly – and also won a monstrous 19 of his 24 duels – again, your eyes do not deceive you.

To put that into context about just how ridiculous that is, Adama Traore who leads the way this season in the Premier League in terms of average dribbles per game, is at 4.2 per game.

And, writing in his post-match player ratings for The Chronicle, Lee Ryder gave him an eight, saying: “The crowd pleaser looked capable of slicing the Blades open time after time. Always creative before knock forced him off. Had 63 touches in total and big hand in opener.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/newcastle-steve-bruce-premier-league-transfer-gossip-rumours-news-st-james-park-joelinton-shelvey-max-aarons” title=”Read the latest Newcastle transfer rumours and news!”]

Those sentiments were echoed by The Shields Gazette’s Liam Kennedy, who also gave him an eight, adding: “What a player. He’s turned up with the want to entertain. Some unbelievable runs from all over the park. Quiet in the last two games – not this time around. Shame he picked up an injury to end his night.”

The £75k-a-week earning Saint-Maximin was outstanding, and he no doubt had the St James’ Park faithful off their seat time and time again.

Celtic: Joseph shares Postecoglou update

Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph has shared when Celtic hope to seal a deal for new managerial target Ange Postecoglou.

The Lowdown: A busy weekend…

It’s safe to say the Hoops hierarchy haven’t had a stress-free Bank Holiday weekend.

A deal for long-term target Eddie Howe collapsed on Friday afternoon, with problems with backroom staff, budget and personal reasons all contributing to a deal falling through.

They swiftly moved on to Yokohama F. Marinos manager Postecoglou, with the Hoops in advanced talks with the 55-year-old on Friday evening.

The Latest: Joseph’s Twitter post

Joseph took to social media late on Saturday evening to update supporters on Celtic’s pursuit of Postecoglou, admitting the Hoops are looking to ‘conclude the deal by the middle of next week’ – a telling nine-word admission on the club’s hopes of landing Neil Lennon’s permanent successor as soon as possible.

“Talks progressing well between Celtic and Ange Postecoglou’s representatives. Celtic hope to conclude the deal by the middle of next week. Yokohama F Marinos take on Shimizu S-Pulse at 5am (UK time) tomorrow. Farewell match for their boss?”

Postecoglou guided Yokohama F. Marinos to a 2-1 win over Shimizu S-Pulse on Sunday but was coy when asked about a possible move to Scotland.

The Verdict: Off-field positions need to be filled

Celtic need to fill the manager and director of football (DoF) roles quickly with the summer transfer window now looming.

All avenues appear to point to Postecoglou as manager and Fergal Harkin as DoF, with the latter, currently with Manchester City, possibly knowing the Australian well due to the connections within the City Football Group.

Before you know it, the Hoops will have Champions League qualifying fixtures to fulfil, so it could be crucial to have their key off-field positions filled to give the club the best chance of succeeding in Europe.

You’d expect a number of player incomings and outgoings to materialise as well, so planning for the 2021/22 campaign needs to get underway as soon as possible.

By the sounds of it, the Hoops are hoping to conclude a deal for Postecoglou by the middle of next week, however, as we now know with Howe, that isn’t guaranteed.

Blackwell leads Somerset with all-round show

Worcestershire’s two-match winning start in the Benson & Hedges Cup was rudely interrupted by a buffeting from Somerset all-rounder Ian Blackwell

Roy Bradley04-May-2001Worcestershire’s two-match winning start in the Benson & Hedges Cup was rudely interrupted by a buffeting from Somerset all-rounder Ian Blackwell. The 22-year-old former Derbyshire player, now in his second season in the West Country, won his fist gold award with an innings of 64 from 74 balls as well as a wicket and a catch in a hard-fought victory by 20 runs. The Blackwell barrage, which owed much to a missed chance when he had made 22, enabled Somerset to reach 179 and their seamers, led by Steffan Jones with two for 12, performed brilliantly to dismiss the hosts for 159.Worcestershire would have been disappointed in letting the visitors off the hook. Andy Bichel’s first ball hit Marcus Trescothick on the left thumb and though the England opener recovered to make 16, the innings was soon in disarray despite a useful 39 from skipper Jamie Cox.Blackwell entered the fray at 64 for five and almost single-handedly set up Somerset’s second win in the competition, but there was still a lot of work to do when Worcestershire chased a relatively modest target.Inconsistent bounced helped Jones to remove Graeme Hick with one that lifted from a length and the main stroke-makers were polished off with the help of good catching, notably Keith Parsons’ diving effort at backward point to account for Anurag Singh.David Leatherdale survived to make 55, his second half-century of the week, and Worcestershire had some hope when Bichel contributed 31 to a stand of 52, but the challenge tapered out when Blackwell comfortably held a chance from Leatherdale at long off.
