Sheffield United: Blades want James Garner

Sheffield United are rumoured to be interested in a deal to sign Manchester United midfielder James Garner on loan, according to The Sun.

What’s the story?

Garner is contracted with Manchester United until the summer of 2022, and it remains to be seen as to whether he’ll feature for their senior side anytime soon.

The midfielder spent last year’s campaign on loan with both Watford and Nottingham Forest, where he made a mixed impact with both Championship teams.

The Sun claim that Sheffield United are keen on finalising a loan agreement for Garner, who evidently made a good impression on Slavisa Jokanovic last term.

The Blades will be looking to win promotion back into the Premier League at the first time of asking, after their relegation from the top-flight last season.

‘Next Michael Carrick’

Football Insider have recently claimed that Manchester United are preparing to loan out Garner ahead of the new season after they’ve held contract talks with him over a long-term deal at Old Trafford.

Sheffield United are likely to be alerted to this rumoured update on the midfielder’s future, and they’ll be hoping they can beat a number of teams to land his signature this summer.

It has previously been reported that the likes of Forest were also keen on signing Garner on a temporary basis this summer, although it remains to be seen as to which club is leading the race at this stage.

Garner caught the eye with some strong performances for the Reds last season in particular, with the 20-year-old having an average Whoscored rating of 6.98 from the 2020/21 campaign, which put him top in the standings of Forest’s best performers.

He’s a solid performer in the defensive side of the game as well, with Garner averaging two tackles a game, as well as 1.7 interceptions per game.

The Manchester United youngster also has an eye for a pass, with a pass accuracy of 80.9% during the 2020/21 season, which makes for strong reading compared to the majority of his former Nottingham Forest teammates.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjær has previously likened Garner to Michael Carrick, who spent time at Old Trafford during his playing career.

“I believe he’s got the chance to have a great future, he knows we believe in him, we’ve got great faith in him as the next Michael Carrick.

“I know he’s young and I know it’s not fair on kids to compare to great players like Michael was, but he’s the same mould, he plays simple passes, plays through the lines.”

Sheff United have a number of strong options available to them in a similar position to Garner, but you would imagine that the 20-year-old could learn a considerable amount from the likes of Ollie Norwood, John Fleck and Sander Berge in the future, which would make this a fantastic signing for Jokanovic’s side if they can pull it off.

Blades supporters should be buzzing about this potential agreement with Garner, as it’d be a real statement of intent about their ambitions of returning to the Premier League this season, as he has shown he’s more than good enough to be playing for a team challenging for promotion.

The Blades are set to take on Birmingham City in their season opener, in what could potentially be a tricky test for them at Bramall Lane and hopefully for their fans, they’ll have Garner in the starting line-up.

Leeds eyeing Croatia’s Borna Barisic

Leeds United are eyeing a move for Croatia international Borna Barisic in the summer transfer window.

What’s the story?

With Gjanni Alioski’s long-term future not yet secure – the latest report has suggested the Whites are keen on tying him down to a new deal at the Premier League club – it’s no surprise that Bielsa’s side are keen on landing a new first-team left-back.

And now, according to Football Insider, Victor Orta is plotting a move for Barisic this summer as he looks to strengthen Bielsa’s options in that left-back position.

The report claims that “the Yorkshire giants have made a new senior left-sided defender a priority in the summer window”, and that “international broker Simon Conning has been mandated to sound out interest in Barisic”.

Bielsa will be buzzing

Hailed as “outstanding” by Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, the man with 56 career assists to his name appears to be the perfect attack-minded left-back that Bielsa would want at Elland Road.

Last season saw him deliver a whopping 14 assists in all competitions, providing a real threat down the left-hand side and coming up with some real telling contributions in the big games – in Rangers’ Europa League run, the Croatian scored three times and provided another three assists too.

The man who signed him for his former club, Osijek, Zoran Zekic, said: “We used to make a made a plan for every game and every game we made that plan 90 per cent around playing it to Borna Barisic. He is technically good, understands football, his timing is very good too and he has great crossing ability. He played maybe 45 games in the season and for 40 of them he was the best player.”

The fact that a left-back was a mahjor part of his team’s game-plan is a major statement on just how influential he can be, and is surely another big reason why Bielsa will be excited at the prospect of managing him at Elland Road.

In comparison, Alioski managed just two goals and three assists in the Premier League last season despite playing 36 games at both left-back and even further forward as a left-winger too – a measly return when compared to Barisic, and the kind of offensive football Bielsa’s side like to play.

A swoop for Barisic would be an exciting one given his current attacking exploits, and it is one that should have Bielsa absolutely buzzing.

Meanwhile, Marcelo Bielsa is eyeing a reunion with this Leeds United hero…

Lucien Favre at Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace could form a dream duo at Selhurst Park by signing Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard after appointing Lucien Favre as their new manager.

What’s the story?

According to The Guardian, Palace are set to appoint the former Borussia Dortmund boss as Roy Hodgson’s successor over the coming days, while Edouard has also been linked with a move to south London in the past.

Favre has established a reputation for developing young talent throughout his career, playing a pivotal part in the emergence of Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland during his time in Germany, and the France Under-21 international could be the next star to benefit from his expertise.

Imagine him and Favre

It seemed as though Edouard was destined to be reunited with his former manager Brendan Rodgers at Leicester City until the Northern Irish tactician opted for Patson Daka instead.

But after four successful years at Celtic Park, the 23-year-old seems set to take the next step in his career over the coming months.

After arriving in Glasgow on an initial loan deal from boyhood club Paris Saint-Germain back in 2017, Edouard has caught the eye with his impressive performances ever since.

The 6 ft 1 forward was hailed as “magnificent” by former Hoops boss Neil Lennon during his time in charge, and with 120 goal contributions in just 168 appearances, it’s easy to understand why.

Palace are in desperate need of quality additions over the coming months. Over a dozen first-team players are set to become free agents at this moment in time, and Michy Batshuayi’s return to parent club Chelsea following an underwhelming loan spell has let a sizeable gap at the top end of the pitch.

A move to Palace could be the ideal scenario for all parties then. Edouard could progress his career and develop under a well-respected coach, Favre would add a proven goalscorer to his ranks, and the capital club would benefit from two excellent recruits.

The addition of such a highly thought of striker and manager may even be enough to convince Wilfried Zaha to remain with the club a little while longer, meaning it’s a transfer that chairman Steve Parish must try and pull off this summer.

Pakistan post biggest victory against Kiwis

Pakistan stamped their allround superiority over New Zealand when they won by an innings and 324 runs in the first cricket Test with two days to spare at the Gaddafi Stadium Friday

Samiul Hasan04-May-2002Pakistan stamped their allround superiority over New Zealand when they won by an innings and 324 runs in the first cricket Test with two days to spare at the Gaddafi Stadium Friday.Paceman Shoaib Akhtar struck terror in the first innings when he finished with career-best figures of six for 11.In the second innings, Danish Kaneria grabbed his fourth five-wicket haul in eighth Test on way to capturing five for 110 to help Pakistan record their biggest victory. Their previous was by an innings and 264 runs over Bangladesh at Multan last year. While it was the fifth biggest margin of victory in the history of Test cricket, it was New Zealand’s heaviest defeat. They had lost by an innings and 322 runs against the West Indies at Wellington in 1993-94.Interestingly, it was also Pakistan’s first victory at the cricket headquarters in Lahore for 12 years. Their previous win was also against New Zealand in 1990-91.New Zealand had resumed on the third day at 58 for six in reply to Pakistan’s 643. Their first innings lasted less than an hour when they were shot out for 73, their second lowest score against Pakistan since they scored 70 in 1955-56 at Dhaka.Forced to follow on and trailing Pakistan by 570 runs, New Zealand were sent packing in the final over of the day’s play for 246. The visitors lost their last seven wickets for 60 runs.Pakistan were simply outstanding in this Test. Their performance showed that the team was now playing and settling down as a winning unit.If it was Man-of-the-Match Inzamam-ul-Haq who carried the innings on his shoulder with a strokeful 329, the bowling honours were shared by pace and spin combination of Shoaib and Kaneira. In fact, when Shoaib went out of commission from New Zealand’s second innings with a swollen ankle, Kaneira rose to the occasion in the second innings.Pakistan’s fielding, however, remained unimpressive and unexpectedly it was Rashid Latif who missed three chances. But when Waqar Younis left the field and captaincy came to Rashid, he marshalled his troops for a brief period and was instrumental in triggering the middle-order collapse. When Rashid took over thehelm of affairs, New Zealand were cruising along at 180 for three and were in with a chance to take the match into the fourth day. But Rashid made changes in the field and made Danish and Abdul Razzaq bowl according to his requirements. The results were immediate when Chris Harris’ 104-minute defiance ended as Razzaq pinned him in front of the wickets. Harris was earlier dropped twice by Rashid in a space of three runs and the unluckly bowler on both the occasions was Danish.Nevertheless, Harris’s departure opened all floodgates as Danish turned almost unplayable. After the dropped catches, Danish lifted himself and showed his magic by baffling Craig McMillan with a googly that left the batsman stranded in front of the wickets.Danish was on a hat trick when he disturbed the symmetry of Robbie Hart’s stumps with another googly that went through the bat and pad of the New Zealand wicketkeeper. Daniel Vettori denied Danish the feat before falling to Razzaq who finished with two for 47.The leg spinner was in action again when he picked the prized scalp of Stephen Fleming who fought a lone battle while scoring a sedate 66. Fleming mistimed a pull and was held by substitute Mohammad Sami.Fleming held the fort for 19 minutes over three hours during which he received 124 balls. His innings included nine exquisitely timed boundaries. When Fleming reached 24, he became New Zealand’s third batsman to complete 4,000 runs. The list is headed by Martin Crowe, who scored 5,444 runs from 77 Tests, and John Wright who took 82 Tests to score 5,334 runs. It was Fleming’s 33rd half century in 69th Test. With the dismissal of Fleming, it was just a matter of when the innings would close. Kaneira completed his five-wicket haul when he foxed Daryl Tuffey in the air who edged it to Shoaib Malik who held two catches as Shoaib Akhtar’s substitute.Besides Fleming, Lou Vincent also showed some resilience and played cracking shots before becoming Kaneira’s first victim. He edged it to Rashid who ended up with three catches. Vincent scored 57, his third half century in seven Tests. He batted for 111 minutes and punched seven boundaries.Together with opener Mark Richardson (32), Vincent added 66 runs while Fleming and Harris put on 85 runs from 159 balls.Earlier, Shoaib Akhtar continued from where he had left on Thursday when he fired in sizzling yorkers to account for Brooke Walker and Chris Martin. Brooke was adjudged leg before while Martin’s middle stump was uprooted. Both the teams now travel to Karachi Monday where the second and last Test begins May 8.

Paul Smyth set to be released by QPR

Queens Park Rangers forward Paul Smyth looks set to depart the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by West London Sport, who claim that Mark Warburton does not look likely to offer the 23-year-old a new deal at the club, with his current contract expiring next month.

Smyth must go

Having moved to QPR from Linfield FC in what was a £225k deal back in 2017, it would be a fair assessment to make that Smyth has not quite lived up to expectations in west London.

Despite getting off to the perfect start in his career with the Rs, scoring on his debut against Cardiff City, the Northern Ireland international failed to cement a place in the first-team, scoring one further goal and providing one assist over his total of 13 Championship appearances in the 2017/18 season.

A series of loan moves followed, with the £4.8k-per-week striker scoring six goals and providing six assists over 37 appearances during two spells at Accrington Stanley, bagging one goal and registering two assists over 21 fixtures for Wycombe Wanderers and netting one goal and providing two assists over 14 appearances with Charlton.

As can be seen, these returns – while playing at a lower level than the Championship – are not exactly breathtaking, despite the fact that Lee Bowyer dubbed the forward an “excellent” player during his time at The Valley.

As such, it would very much appear the right move for Warburton to allow Smyth to move onto pastures new this summer, as the 23-year-old simply does not appear to have what it takes to make it in the Rs’ first team.

Meanwhile, his rather hefty weekly wage could also easily be spent elsewhere by the 58-year-old manager, who will be looking to build a team capable of a push for promotion ahead of next season.

Report offers latest on Celtic Nisbet chase

Hibernian striker Kevin Nisbet is on Celtic’s ‘watchlist’ but they are unable to make a firm approach amid the managerial uncertainty at the club, according to a report from The Scotsman.

The lowdown

Nisbet scored 18 goals and provided eight assists in 44 appearances for Hibernian over the course of the 2020/21 season after signing from Dunfermline. That equates to a direct goal contribution every 132 minutes.

The 24-year-old still has three years left on his contract at Easter Road and is valued at £2.7m by Transfermarkt. He has also been included in the Scotland squad for the upcoming European Championship.

Celtic may be on the lookout for a proven Premiership goalscorer, with Odsonne Edouard seemingly closing in on an exit from Parkhead.

The latest

Celtic have yet to make any formal overtures, but Hibernian fully expect offers for Nisbet during the transfer window.

The Hoops may be given the green light to make an offer when they finalise the appointment of their new manager. It was reported over the weekend that they were in advanced talks with Ange Postecoglou.

Intriguingly, Hibs are said to be eyeing Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths as a possible replacement. His contract is due to expire on Monday, although Celtic have the option to extend it for a further year (The Scotsman), and the 30-year-old has already had two loan spells at Easter Road.

The verdict

Perhaps the sensible thing to do here would be to extend Griffiths’ deal and then attempt to negotiate some form of exchange. Nisbet would be a solid if unspectacular signing for Celtic, with the comfort of knowing that he is capable of scoring abundantly at Premiership level.

This could possibly be one of a number of moves simply awaiting a go-ahead from a newly-appointed manager at Parkhead, making the swift appointment of Neil Lennon’s full-time successor advisable.

In other news, there’s an update on talks with Postecoglou.

Tottenham claim emerges involving Graham Potter

Writing on Twitter, reliable Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Alasdair Gold has dropped a behind the scenes claim on the manager hunt in north London – saying that ‘a number’ of Spurs players ‘would be happy’ if the club pursued Brighton boss Graham Potter.

The Lowdown: Potter linked to Spurs job

The 45-year-old has been heavily linked to the Tottenham Hotspur job ever since former manager Jose Mourinho was sacked last month, with reports claiming that he is a target.

This includes technical performance director Steve Hitchen, who apparently has Potter on his shortlist of recommendations for chairman Daniel Levy (The Daily Mail).

The Seagulls gaffer is said to have other admirers within the club, but Hitchen’s list is the one that ‘goes upstairs’ for consideration by Levy as Spurs search for the next manager (The Daily Mail).

The Latest: Gold drops claim involving Potter

Now, writing on Twitter, Lilywhites inside source Gold has dropped a rather interesting claim involving the Premier League boss and ‘a number’ of players.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-story-roundup/” title=”Spurs story roundup!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, he says that there are certain members of the squad who would be happy if Tottenham pursued Potter as an heir to Mourinho after being taken aback by his footballing philosophy.

“Told a number of the Spurs players had a lasting impression left on them by the style of Brighton’s play and would be happy if Graham Potter was pursued to become the club’s next manager.” said Gold on social media.

The Verdict: Potter too risky…

It’s clear he fits the profile of an attack-minded boss reportedly wanted at Tottenham after the arguably regrettable Mourinho era (The Guardian).

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is also a huge admirer of Potter, recently calling him the ‘best English manager’ (Brighton and Hove Independent).

However, while he has also been lauded as a ‘genius’ by an unnamed former Swansea City player (The Athletic), Potter could come as a risky appointment given his lack of experience managing big players.

He would have many to watch over at Spurs, including the likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, and it’s debatable whether he has the experience for such a big job at Tottenham.
