These new faces may boost Arsenal next season

Arsenal have been fairly solid under new manager Unai Emery and, as the Spaniard is approaching his third transfer window with the Gunners, we look to who he can bring in to improve in the weaker areas of his current side.

Indeed, the North London side have certainly looked good in patches, though there is quite clearly a gulf in class when it comes to battling the real big boys. Despite all the talent he has available to him, Emery isn’t blessed with a squad as good as Manchester City’s or Liverpool’s and the project in play at the Emirates obviously needs some big backing if they’re going to close the gap.

With that in mind – considering what we’ve seen so far – here’s a look at two options the club should be considering ahead of the summer window.

Kai Havertz

Kai Havertz has been one of the many wonderkids in the Bundesliga this season. Providing 9 goals and 4 assists in the league, the young German talent could be a worthy replacement if the eventual exit of Mesut Özil is to finally happen in the summer, as was touted by Calciomercato some time ago.

The 19-year-old attacking midfielder has had many highlights this season, he has managed to bag himself 2 goals in one game on more than one occasion, 2-6 away win at Werder Bremen and a 3-1 home win against Hertha Berlin. as well as proving effective against the smaller German clubs.

This season alone, Havertz has shown that he could be of real use in the Arsenal midfield and with the help of Matteo Guendouzi, they could form a long term alliance and bring a balance of strength and creativity to the middle of Arsenals midfield once again.

Denis Suarez

Already with the Gunners on loan from Barcelona, it could be argued that they already have a key summer signing wearing the jersey. Since joining in January, the 25-year-old has found it hard to get some real game time under Unai Emery, however with this and given more time, the Spanish midfielder could prove to be one of the signings of the window if given a permanent deal.

Seeing as he is being given time to adjust to the Premier League in the closing months and been shown the way Emery wants his team to play, this is like a 3-month training programme for next season.

Tottenham fans have mixed reaction to Bale, Eriksen reports

[ad_pod ]

According to Marca, via Sport Witness, Real Madrid could offer Gareth Bale to Tottenham Hotspur this summer in a bid to land Christian Eriksen.

Bale has won four Champions League titles during his time at the Bernabeu, but it is widely thought that the Welshman has never really settled in Spain.

Bale scored 55 times in 203 appearances for Spurs ahead of a move to Real Madrid and according to Marca, via Sports Witness, he could now head back to London.

A lot would have to happen for such a deal to take place, namely Eriksen making the move in the opposite direction, according to the report.

Eriksen will see his contract with Spurs expire at the end of next season and he has been strongly linked with a move away from the club.

Liverpool fans react after Everton fans are caught singing Manchester City songs

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react furiously after they discovered that Everton fans were singing Manchester City songs following the 0-0 draw at Goodison Park on Sunday.

The Reds’ inability to beat their city rivals saw them miss an opportunity to leapfrog Pep Guardiola’s side and return to the top of the table, and with nine games to go, the reigning champions have the initiative.

Obviously, Liverpool and Everton are bitter rivals, and whilst the Toffees’ celebrations after the full-time whistle seemed like they were celebrating a point, they were perhaps more intent on cheering the fact that they dented their foes’ title hopes.

After the showpiece event, Everton fans were caught on camera singing Manchester City’s ‘Blue Moon’ song to celebrate the Citizens returning to the top of the table.

Understandably, after seeing their title hopes dealt a blow, Liverpool fans on Twitter were quick to retaliate after seeing the video…

Tottenham fans hated Lamela’s performance vs Newcastle

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham kept themselves well and truly in the title race with a crucial win over Newcastle on Saturday, but fans aren’t too happy with the performance of Erik Lamela.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side didn’t have it all their own way in Saturday’s early kick-off, as Newcastle showed once again they are not to be taken lightly.

The Magpies are never blown away by the top six sides due to their steel and organisation, and of course were responsible for one of the upsets of the season against Manchester City last week.

Rafael Benitez’s side proved a stern test for the Lilywhites as well, but a late goalkeeping error from Martin Dubravka allowed Son Heung-min to save the day once again.

While the electric fan favourite has only further enamoured himself to the fans during the club’s injury crisis, Lamela has unfortunately walked the opposite path.

The 26 year-old is often very wasteful and erratic in possession and fans are not happy with his display…

On Sunday, Liverpool's academy players drew praise for how they inspired the Reds to a Carabao Cup final triumph over Chelsea at Wembley, before a youthful Reds side backed that up with a 3-0 win over Southampton in the FA Cup on Wednesday. That led manager Klopp to liken them to 17-year-old darts phenomenon Littler – who burst onto the scene late last year. However, the former Borussia Dortmund boss is keen to not overhype the youngsters.

The German told reporters: "I know that they are not ready for it. Nobody is Luke Littler. What could disturb a career for a young prospect is always one part. It was wonderful them on that night [against Southampton], but now it's about dealing with the challenges coming up."

He added: “It is a little bit like the new darts sensation, it is fine for tonight. Tomorrow, leave the boys in the corner.”

At a time where Liverpool have been beset by injuries to key players, the emergence of this young crop of talent is a welcome distraction for Klopp. They will need all the help they can get if they want to achieve an historic quadruple in the German's last season in charge – with the Europa League, Premier League, and FA Cup still to play for.

Chelsea lose Carabao Cup final to Liverpool Pochettino points out fatal flaw in loss Chelsea wasted multiple chances in front of goal GettyWHAT HAPPENED?

Chelsea lost the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool as they conceded late in extra-time. Liverpool prevailed thanks to a header from Virgil Van Dijk as the match seemed to be slowly heading to a penalty shootout. After the game, Mauricio Pochettino spoke to the media in which he detailed one critical fault.

AdvertisementWHAT POCHETTINO SAID

Speaking to the media, the Chelsea boss said: "We created four, five, six big chances and we didn't score. In a game like today and in a final to score first, is a big advantage. We didn't score and that is a bit of a problem. We conceded in the last minute and it was difficult to react. They [the players] are professional, they need to feel the pain. We played for a trophy we didn't get. They need to feel the pain like us. The players feel the disappointment because we were so close to winning the game after 90 minutes."

"We need to take positive things, need to push, use this type of game to learn and be better. I think we really competed if you don't score with the chances we had it's difficult to win the final. That is why, we lost the final we need to be clinical in front of goal and we congratulate Liverpool and keep going. The way you lose is so painful but now we need to keep going and keep moving. They scored and we didn't score."

The problem with finishing isn't a new one for Pochettino's side as they have struggled all throughout the season. While the squad hasn't struggled to create chances, they have struggled to put the chances past the opposition goalkeeper. The loss has now, more or less, confirmed that Pochettino will not stay at the club past the end of the season, given that he isn't shown the door before then.

The Serie A side won 1-0 at home against Monza thanks to a late goal from Stephan El Shaarawy. The acrimony did not end there, though, as coach Jose Mourinho was sent off for a gesture he made towards the Monza bench. After being shown the straight red card, the Portuguese coach will serve a one-match suspension, meaning he will be absent for next week's match against his former team Internazionale.

  • WHAT THEY SAID

The sports judge said in the announcement that the club will have to pay the fine, explaining: "Roma, way of strict liability, for having its own ball boys, after the goal was scored, systematically slowed down the regular resumption of the game, forcing the Referee to extend the injury time by two minutes."

'We want them to stay here' – USWNT duo Rose Lavelle and Emily Sonnett opting to explore NWSL free agency despite OL Reign boss Laura Harvey's plea

With NWSL free agency underway, OL Reign duo Rose Lavelle and Emily Sonnett are set to explore their options.

Lavelle and Sonnett to explore NWSL free agencyOL Reign boss Harvey wants them to stayBoss also says exploring options is something duo should 'live through'WHAT HAPPENED?

Speaking to media on Monday, the OL Reign boss admitted that she believes the duo should explore free agency this offseason, but added that she wants them both to 'stay' in Seattle. For Lavelle and Sonnett, they should have plenty of suitors, but surely no deal will be made until after the USWNT camp over the next two weeks.

AdvertisementUSA Today Sports THE BIGGER PICTURE

Lavelle missed most of the NWSL season to injury, but down the final stretch of the season, she was beyond influential in their attack. During the championship against Gotham FC, the USWNT star moved into a striker role and nearly won the game for her side on multiple occasions, but it was too tall of a task for just her in the end. As for Sonnett, she was a rock in the midfield when playing and would be an asset for any club, but they would have to make a huge offer for a player with her talent to lure her away from her home in Seattle.

WHAT HARVEY SAID

"I just think that free agency is something that players should live through. I said this last year with our free agents: They should live through it. And I think the Expansion Draft adds an extra wrinkle to that, that they know that if they're still free, they can't be picked. So that gives them some power [over] their own destiny outside of wherever they choose their next destination to be," she said.

"And you know, I think everyone knows that we really value Rose and Sonnett. They're a huge part of our team. I think Sonnett's evolution this year has been exceptional. And Rose obviously had a tough year, but you saw that at the back end of the season what she can do, and they know that we love them, and we want them to stay here. But I do think that every player – and we advise them this – that they should live through free agency and see what it looks like for them."

The UWSNT duo are both in NWSL offseason mode, but both have been called up to represent their nation in a pair of friendlies against China PR in early December. Lavelle is listed as a midfielder on the roster, so she's expected to play a deeper role than she did in the NWSL final with the Reign, whereas Sonnett will maintain her defensive midfield spot in the team.

Quem enterra o jejum?

> Confira a tabela do Campeonato Carioca

Bangladesh brace for Oman's surprise factor

Having beaten Ireland in a last-over thriller, Oman, whose game against Netherlands was washed out, will head into their knockout shootout clash against Bangladesh high on confidence

Big Picture
When the tournament’s schedule was first announced, few would have given Oman a chance of qualifying ahead of Bangladesh and Ireland from their group. Having beaten Ireland in a last-over thriller, Oman, whose game against Netherlands was washed out, will head into their knockout clash against Bangladesh high on confidence. But confidence alone won’t help them if the iffy Dharamsala weather intervenes. It has been raining for the last two days, and plenty more is forecast on match day. If there were to be another washout, Oman would endure heartbreak as Bangladesh are marginally ahead on net run rate.Oman would rely on Zeeshan Maqsood and Khawar Ali to power them upfront, to give Jatinder Singh and Amir Ali an opportunity to lend the finishing touches. Ajay Lalcheta and Munis Ansari, whose action resembles Lasith Malinga’s, will be key if Oman are to restrict Bangladesh’s in-form batting unit. That could be a herculean task if Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar and Sabbir Rahman tee off like they did against Ireland in eight overs before the rain came. Tamim, in particular, looks in fine touch, having made an unbeaten 83 and 47 against Netherlands and Ireland respectively. Sarkar and Sabbir would want to prolong their stay in the middle to take the pressure off the slightly out-of-touch Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan.Bangladesh’s bowling may be a concern with Arafat Sunny already in Chennai to conduct his bowling action test after being warned by the ICC. He could be missed on a slow pitch, but Bangladesh have variety as Shakib, Mahmudullah and even Nasir Hossain can cover up in his absence,Form guide

Soumya Sarkar is becoming an expert in getting the side off to fast starts, but he has also been guilty of frittering the early advantage, as was the case against Netherlands and Ireland. The game against Oman could be a good chance for him to bat deep into the innings and bring up a score of substance.Amir Ali is a marketing manager at an Indian restaurant in Muscat but after his 17-ball 32 against Ireland, Bangladesh would have done well to mark him as one to watch out for in a high-pressure clash.Team news
Against Ireland, Mohammad Mithun and Abu Hider replaced Nasir Hossain and Arafat Sunny. Bangladesh could retain this line-up, though Nasir’s bowling is handy in the shorter version. Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Soumya Sarkar, 3 Sabbir Rahman, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim, 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Mohammad Mithun/Nasir Hossain, 8 Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), 9 Al-Amin Hossain, 10 Abu Hider, 11 Taskin AhmedUnless they spot something dramatically different in the pitch, Oman are unlikely to tinker with their starting XI Oman (probable) 1 Zeeshan Maqsood, 2 Khawar Ali, 3 Jatinder Singh, 4 Adnan Ilyas, 5 Mehran Khan, 6 Aamir Kaleem, 7 Amir Ali, 8 Sultan Ahmed (capt. & wk), 9 Ajay Lalcheta, 10 Munis Ansari, 11 Bilal KhanPitch and conditions
There’s more rain on the radar on Sunday. But despite being under covers for a long time on Friday, the pitch played well in the Bangladesh-Ireland game, though the bowlers preferred slower variations.Stats and trivia
This is going to be the first Bangladesh-Oman cricket match at any level. Tamim Iqbal is now 11 runs short of 1,000 T20I runs while Shakib remains at 979 runs.Quotes”We won’t be taking Oman lightly. We don’t have much footage for them, but we will prepare as hard as we do for India and Pakistan.”
“It is a win-win situation for us. If we win we go through to the next round, but unfortunately if we can’t do that we have still achieved a lot in this tournament.”
