Head coach German Portanova will rely on a mix of youth and experience to take on the giants in Women's football. They are in Group G alongside Sweden, South Africa and Italy. So far, in their nine group-stage games over three editions, Argentina are yet to win a game and have only managed to score five goals.

They have assembled a squad to do just that. Who made it into Argentina's Women's World Cup squad? GOAL takes a look.

It's over for Luis Rubiales! Football's 'Wolf of Wall Street' personifies everything that is unjust about the women's game

The RFEF president says fake feminists are trying to "kill" him, but there is only one victim in this sorry affair: Jenni Hermoso

Right up until the moment Luis Rubiales took to the stage at the Spanish Football Federation's (truly) Extraordinary Assembly last Friday afternoon, the whole football world expected him to resign as president. His behaviour during and after the Women's World Cup final just five days previously had been a disgrace, a total embarrassment, with Rubiales first grabbing his crotch in the ultimate show of toxic masculinity after Spain had opened the scoring.

It would have been a wholly undignified gesture no matter where he was in the stadium – but the fact that he was sitting in the directors' box alongside the Queen of Spain only made it even more disrespectful. Far worse was to come, though, with Rubiales planting a kiss on national team captain Jenni Hermoso while she and her team-mates were receiving their winners' medals.

In the space of half an hour, Rubiales had managed to make the greatest triumph in the history of Spanish women's football all about him. He had effectively robbed them of the finest moment of their careers, because the news cycle quickly, inevitably and rightly became dominated by Rubiales' gross conduct.

For Spain, the build-up to the tournament had been dominated by the mutiny staged in response to the draconian measures imposed upon the players by coach Jorge Vilda – the after-party overshadowed by the lewd behaviour of the head of the RFEF. It was a sporting tragedy.

GettyRubiales doubles down

On Friday, Rubiales had the chance to do the right thing, to bring an end to the media circus and allow the nation to get back to celebrating their new sporting heroes. He didn't stand down, though. Or even back down. He doubled down.

Rubiales effectively went full 'Wolf of Wall Street' (and one should never go full 'Wolf of Wall Street'!). Indeed, as he leaned heavily on Jordan Belfort's famous "I'm not leaving" speech by repeating the words "I will not resign" over and over again, Rubiales sounded just as stubborn, short-sighted and entitled as one of the most notorious swindlers in history.

He described the kiss as "a peck", claimed it was "consensual" and dismissed those criticising his actions as exponents of "fake feminism" – which he labelled "a scourge" of modern society.

AdvertisementGoal / Getty / The Sun'Simply put, I was not respected'

Both his words and demeanour were shocking – and yet they felt strangely and entirely appropriate from the new posterboy of the inappropriate.

As Hermoso said in her own statement on Friday, "I feel obliged to report that Mr Rubiales’ words explaining the unfortunate incident are categorically false and part of the manipulative culture that he himself has generated. The kiss was never consensual. I was asked to make a joint-statement to alleviate the pressure but all that was in my mind was to enjoy a historic milestone. Despite my decision, I have been under constant pressure to make a statement to justify Mr Rubiales’ actions.

"No person, in any work, sports, or social setting should be a victim of these types of non-consensual behaviours. I felt vulnerable and a victim of an impulse-driven, sexist, out of place act without any consent on my part. Simply put, I was not respected."

Getty ImagesDead man walking

Rubiales says he is willing to go to court to clear his name and is now a dead man walking. FIFA has already got involved, suspending him for 60 days, while several senior figures in the Spanish government have made it clear that he simply has to go, meaning his enforced exit is now inevitable.

For starters, Spain no longer has a women's team – the entire World Cup-winning squad and 58 other players have already announced that they will not play for the national side again while Rubiales remains at the helm of the federation. Every single member of the coaching staff has resigned – bar Vilda, and even he issued a statement criticising his boss, which perfectly underlines just how untenable Rubiales' position has become.

There's also the fact that Spain is hoping to co-host the 2030 Men's World Cup – but the politicians are acutely aware that their bid has no chance of success with Rubiales still in charge of the RFEF. Not even own-goal king Gianni Infantino would want anything to do with a man that has come to symbolise everything that is unjust about the management of the women's game.

Getty ImagesChance to overhaul the system

In truth, though, Rubiales shouldn't be the only figure removed from the federation. Every single one of his supporters needs to be shown the door too, Vilda included, because the RFEF has threatened legal action against FUTPRO (the players' union which issued a statement in support of Hermoso) and also asked UEFA to ban its clubs from European competition because of alleged government interference – a move that so absurd that it hammers home the staggeringly deep-rooted nature of its horribly misguided loyalty to Rubiales.

But that is the one positive side to this sorry affair: nearly the entire football world has united against Rubiales and the RFEF. Borja Iglesias has also quit the Spain set-up in disgust, while both Cadiz and Sevilla issued shows of support for the women's team over the weekend, with the former holding up a banner which read 'We are all with Jenni', and the latter sporting tee-shirts referencing the 'It's over' hashtag started by Hermoso's team-mate, Alexia Putellas.

In addition, Barcelona boss Xavi labelled Rubiales' behaviour "totally unacceptable" and lamented the terrible consequence that we are no longer talking about the "historic achievement of winning the World Cup" – a sentiment shared by former Real Madrid and Spain captain Iker Casillas.

"I'm ashamed for you,” the goalkeeping icon tweeted at Rubiales. "We should have spent these five days talking about our girls! Of the joy they gave us all! To boast of a title that we did not have in women’s football."

Portugal World Cup 2022 squad, predicted line-up versus Switzerland and star players

With Portugal through to the last 16 of the World Cup, who is available to Fernando Santos for the clash against Switzerland?

Portugal are making their eighth appearance at the World Cup in Qatar and coach Fernando Santos will hope that his team can live up to the expectations.

They are yet to lift the coveted prize and their best result was a third-place finish in 1966.

Could this be the time that Cristiano Ronaldo and co. finally get their hands on the trophy after securing qualification through the play-offs?

They defeated Ghana and Uruguay but lost to South Korea in the group stage, yet they still managed to qualify for the knockout stages as group winners.

Portugal have a solid backline led by Manchester City skipper Ruben Dias. He is being paired with an experienced candidate in Pepe.

Joao Cancelo is the preferred choice at right-back, although he has failed to replicate his form for Manchester City so far in Qatar.

On the left flank, Nuno Mendes started until his injury against Uruguay. However, Santos is has cover in that position in Dortmund's Raphael Guerreiro, and Cancelo can play there too.

Portugal have plenty of quality in the centre of the park, too.

The preferred three has been Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Neves and Bernardo Silva. But if Santos wants to mix things up in the middle, he has plenty of assuring options.

Vitinha and Matheus Nunes are young and exciting talents, while William Carvalho adds further depth and experience to the roster. Fulham's Joao Palhinha was in fine form in the build-up to the tournament.

    ATTACKERS

Portugal's hopes may once again rest on the shoulders of Cristiano Ronaldo. The player with the most international goals in men's football will look to add to his tally in Qatar and guide his nation to the ultimate prize.

He is being ably supported by players such as Joao Felix and AC Milan's Rafael Leao, with Diogo Jota and Pedro Neto both ruled out due to injury.

Andre Silva and Goncalo Ramos made the cut, but there is no room for Goncalo Guedes, who missed out altogether.

The retirement of Rafa Silva from international football in September was a surprise for Portugal.

Volante Gabriel leva o terceiro cartão amarelo e desfalca o Corinthians

Live cricket included on new free Sky channel

Cricket fans who complain vociferously about the absence of live cricket on free-to-air TV might find mild consolation in Sky TV’s announcement that they intend to launch a new channel to showcase their live sports package to all their subscribers.Sky have confirmed that live cricket will occasionally be among those sports made available to all their 12-million plus subscribers. Slightly less than half take out a sports package for an additional fee.Sky Sports Mix is seen as offering an extra inducement for its subscribers not to leave Sky in favour of rivals such as BT Sport or Virgin. Most attention has been given to Sky’s promise that it will air a number of live Premier League and Championship matches free of charge, but it is the mention of cricket that will interest the ECB as it pursues TV rights negotiations for the period beyond 2019.Sky announced: “For the first time, millions more Sky customers will be able to watch a mix of live sport – including football, golf from Europe and the US, international cricket and much more – as part of their basic subscription packages.”Women’s cricket will also be included. The ECB remains committed to a future where most international cricket remains behind a paywall, adamant that the revenue gained is necessary to sustain the game, not just at first-class level but in terms of the women’s game and recreational cricket.Nevertheless, there is unease about the fall in numbers in recreational cricket, which seem to signal lessening interest in the game, and which will tempt the ECB to explore the possibility of some live cricket being viewed free to air, beyond the England international highlights that are already available.Discussions will centre not just upon England cricket, but on the availability of England’s domestic T20 tournament – in whatever form it takes from 2020 onwards.Sky Sports Mix might become a useful bargaining chip as negotiations continue. It could not count as free-to-air for all, but any increase in cricket’s reach will be regarded as something worth talking about.

Dockrell leads Ireland closer to victory

ScorecardFile photo: George Dockrell picked up four key wickets•ICC/Rob O’Connor

Ireland needed less than two overs to bowl out UAE in their first innings for 213, enforced the follow-on courtesy a whopping 279-run lead and George Dockrell’s persistent threat has brought the hosts within sight of kicking off their Intercontinental Cup defence with a victory in Dublin.UAE began the day at 207 for 8, with half-centurion Shaiman Anwar at the crease, but he sent the 11th ball of the day from seamer Craig Young to cover point. Manjula Guruge did not last long after that, caught by Ireland captain William Porterfield to give Dockrell his first wicket of the day.Asked to bat again, UAE’s openers Asif Iqbal and Amjad Ali had negotiated the new ball and took the score to 40 for 0 when they ran into Dockrell. Seven runs later, Ireland’s left-arm spinner dismissed both batsmen. Then Paul Stirling’s part-time off breaks provided a useful boost when he lured Khurram Khan’s edge and UAE were 67 for 3.Then Saqib Ali and Swapnil Patil came together and steadied the wobble. The picked off 100 runs in 38.3 overs for the fourth wicket. Patil was the aggressor, with 40 of his 63 runs coming off boundaries. The No. 3 Saqib held fast at his end, taking 207 balls for 51 runs.Dockrell was the man to upset the partnership. He drew Patil out of his crease and had him stumped. He also handed a duck to the new batsman Anwar to finish with 34 overs, 93 runs and four key wickets. And, UAE were back in trouble at 165 for 5.The lower order managed a couple of good cameos. Fayyaz Ahmed made a brisk 32-ball 21. Amjad Javed dug in for 36 off 55 balls before Stirling, bowling legspin this time, enjoyed another stroke of luck and had Javed ninth man out with UAE 28 runs away from making Ireland bat again.

CSA commits to transformation goal before parliament

The South African national team has a target to be 50% transformed, although neither the definition of the word nor a deadline has been clarified by Cricket South Africa

Firdose Moonda19-May-2015

CSA president Chris Nenzani admitted that transformation had taken a back seat for administrators after the emergence of Makhaya Ntini•Gallo Images

The South African national team has a target to be 50% transformed, although neither the definition of the word nor a deadline has been clarified by Cricket South Africa, who presented a report before the country’s parliamentary portfolio committee on Tuesday. The policy of transformation, broadly understood to be the process of correcting the imbalances of South Africa’s racially segregated past by providing opportunities to previously disadvantaged people, was the major subject of discussion, as CSA outlined its commitment to change, which made up a significant part of the board’s 37-page report. In it, CSA stated that “transformation remains paramount in the general business of cricket and we acknowledge the progress still required to improve representivity (sic) especially at national level.” They noted a “specific focus on increasing black African players” whose progression has stagnated since South Africa’s readmission. While CSA cited high unemployment, poverty, low levels of facilities at rural schools and the high cost of maintaining those facilities as impediments to transformation, president Chris Nenzani admitted transformation also took a back seat as administrators stopped looking for promising players after they found their first flagbearer, Makhaya Ntini.”Over the past 20 or so years, we relaxed and that is why we had only Makhaya Ntini making a strong claim for the national team,” Nenzani said.To address that imbalance, CSA will introduce new quotas in the 2015-16 season. National representative schools teams* will be required to have eight black African players in a squad of 15, while national representative university teams three black African players in the playing XI. Both provincial and franchise teams must have at least six players of colour in the teams from next summer, of which at least two must be black African.Nenzani maintained that there was no quota for the national side. “We don’t set targets, we give guidelines. A player gets into the national team not because he is black. He needs to be a good player first.”The “guidelines” over national team selection were recently in the spotlight in the aftermath of the World Cup 2015 semi-final, when it emerged that CSA CEO Haroon Lorgat had been consulted on the team make-up and reminded the selectors of the transformation targets of four players of colour in the team. The controversy erupted after Vernon Philander, who had played much of the tournament with a hamstring injury, was picked ahead of the in-form Kyle Abbott.Despite CSA’s admission that Lorgat “impressed on the convener and coach the need to properly consider the best XI bearing in mind the transformation guidelines”, theboard insisted there had been no interference from outside sources and called the media coverage of the incident “mischievous.”One member of the parliamentary committee, Samuel Mmusi, said, “If that interference was made in the name of transformation we would support it.” Another, Mncedisi Filtane, questioned why Aaron Phangiso, the only black African member of South Africa’s World Cup squad did not play a single game: “Phangiso did not even play a single game but there is no outcry about that. We can’t just say ‘no quotas’ when they are in our policy regulations.”Nenzani defended Phangiso’s omission when he said, “The only game we are playing is cricket. The only level of target we have not specified is at national level.” The committee also demanded more detailed plans from CSA about its transformation goals.”This is a high-level presentation but where are the programs? You have deliberately withheld them. Why are you withholding this information? What game are you playing with us? Where is the meat?” Filtane asked. He also questioned whether CSA would enter into “sponsorship agreements that include transformation and if not, why not?” and how the board is explaining transformation to white players.”How do you handle the resistance of white players when it comes to transformation? It’s bread for some and less bread for others? You have not committed to any dates,” Filtane said.Lorgat explained that CSA has to “be careful” with “conditional sponsorships” while the delegation confirmed that all players have embraced the need to transform. CSA will meet to discuss a memorandum of understanding with South Africa’s sports minister Fikile Mbalula “soon” with all indications that it will decide on a timeline to meet its transformation targets. The other aspects of CSA’s discussion included an overview of their financials in which they revealed a profit of R199,410 million (US$16,716 million) for the 2013-14 season, down R332, 685 million (US$27,050 million) from the season before. However, CSA had initially projected a loss for the season, following the curtailed India tour, and declared the results “excellent.”CSA is optimistic about remaining in the black in future and provided parliament with the ICC’s proposed distribution for 2015-2023 as proof. The model shows CSA as the fifth highest earner behind India, England, Australia and Pakistan. CSA is forecast to earn US$93 million from the ICC in that time. By contrast, the BCCI is expected to benefit to the tune of US$568 million.*1340 GMT, Wednesday, May 20, 2015.
