Charlton: Lee Bowyer should give Deji Oshilaja a chance as Naby Sarr struggles

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

After an excellent start to the campaign, Charlton have slowly began to tail off as injury problems mount.

Lee Bowyer’s side went unbeaten in their first six games back in the Championship, winning four and drawing two, although they have struggled to keep key players out of the physio room.

Lyle Taylor – who netted five times in those first six games and hasn’t played since – is still yet to return from damaged knee ligaments, while Jonny Williams is also looking at a number of weeks on the sidelines.

Despite these issues, there is one man who has delivered awful back-to-back performances during what is now a four-game winless run.

Who is it?

It wouldn’t be harsh to say that Naby Sarr has been in terrible form these past two weeks.

The 26-year-old was subbed off at half-time in the 1-0 defeat to Preston – his 45-minute showing angered these supporters – before he was at fault for both goals in Charlton’s 2-1 defeat to Millwall, another game that attracted angry responses from some fans.

As a result, Sarr should be dropped for one man who has waited patiently for a serious chance.

Summer signing deserves a shot

Deji Oshilaja, a man who became Bowyer’s seventh signing of the summer back in July, has made just four Championship starts since his arrival.

Head of Recruitment Steve Gallen described the 26-year-old as a “strong, dependable” centre-back upon his arrival, and after some consecutively terrible performances from Sarr, Bowyer should see no problems with at least giving Oshilaja a chance to prove himself.

It is evident that Sarr isn’t himself right now, having left The Den turf in tears last week, and it must be said that it was a shock to even see him start against Millwall after being hooked at half-time against Preston.

It won’t do the Senegalese defender much good for Bowyer to keep thrusting him into the limelight, only for Sarr to play poorly, attract criticism and become even more upset.

The Charlton boss must take him out of the firing line, and Oshilaja deserves a chance as a result.

Arsenal could erect their David Luiz mistake by landing Daniele Rugani

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Ilbianconero.com, Arsenal are still interested in signing Juventus’ Daniele Rugani.

What’s the story?

The Gunners were said to be in pursuit of the seven-time Italy international in the summer, but the deal did not go through in the end.

Watch the moment Granit Xhaka’s Arsenal career may have come to an ugly end in the video below…

However, the 25-year-old has not received a single minute of first-team action so far this term, and is now believed to be considering his options.

The report adds that the potential move to north London is a path that still remains open.

Correct Luiz mistake

After initially not being able to sign the former Empoli man, Unai Emery and co completed the purchase of David Luiz from Chelsea instead.

The £8m fee they paid for the 32-year-old appeared to be a bargain, but the former PSG central defender has done little to prove he was worth even that small price.

With him in the side, the Gunners have shipped 14 goals in the Premier League in just nine games.

Given his potential and age, the four-time Serie A champion Rugani would have been a far better option in the summer, and should have been the new face at the Emirates Stadium.

He has not played a minute this term, as mentioned before, but there are very few defences in the world than can boast the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Giorgio Chiellini ahead of him.

However, his seven caps for his country show that he has talent, and that it is just bad luck rather than his poor ability that has prevented him from featuring for the Old Lady so far this campaign.

In his 15 Serie A starts last term, Juve conceded as few as 13 goals, which is a rather good record.

At 25 years old, he has plenty of years ahead of him, and his relatively low number of games – he has played just 168 club matches in his career according to Transfermarkt – should leave him fresh in his later years.

Possessing a 90% pass success rate last term, he’d certainly fit into the philosophy Emery wants to play of passing out from the back.

Currently rated at £19.8m, he is unlikely to cost too much of a fortune either. More than 56-time Brazil international Luiz, of course, but considering his displays this term, it is only normal that a higher price would be paid.

A mistake was made in the summer, but Rugani’s deferred arrival would correct it.

Arsenal fans reminisce over Aaron Ramsey’s finish against Fulham last season

Arsenal fans have been reacting to a tweet put out by the club showing a goal scored by former Gunners’ midfielder Aaron Ramsey.

After the Welshman left the club to Juventus on a free transfer in the summer, 2019 marked the end of an eight-year stay at the Emirates.

The 27-year-old was led to believe that he had come to an agreement to renew his contract at the club. However, Arsenal withdrew the offer to extend due to his high wage demands, per the Guardian.

Arsenal’s Goal of the Day featured a cheeky finish from Ramsey during the Gunners’ 5-1 victory over Fulham last season.

Understandably, supporters enjoyed looking back at Ramsey’s career and some pleaded to the club to bring the Welshman back to the Emirates.

Of course, he has enjoyed a strong start to life in Italy, scoring on his Serie A debut against Hellas Verona in a 2-1 win.

Manchester United must keep a tight lead on FC Astana’s Marin Tomasov

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

It’s always a bit odd watching your side match up against a team from whom you literally cannot name a single player, but Red Devils fans need to keep their eyes peeled for FC Astana’s Marin Tomasov.

Ah, the Europa League. You’d be hard pushed to find a fan of an elite club who enjoys traipsing across Europe to play teams that sound like a men’s cigar club – looking at you Dudelange – or a newly discovered disease – sorry FC Oleksandriya.

That said, there are some hidden gems in the continent’s second-tier competition, and while FC Astana’s place in the Kazakhstan Premier Liga may leave some United fans wondering if they’re even worth playing, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have to shape his game-plan around stopping star man Tomasov.

The 32 year-old winger has scored goals wherever he has played, grabbing 23 for Rijeka and 17 for Hajduk Split, but his record with Astana is the best of the lot.

39 goals and 43 assists in 98 games gives the versatile forward a ratio of 0.84 direct goal contributions per game. To put that into perspective, Marcus Rashford’s ratio since breaking into the first team at Old Trafford is just 0.43.

Now, it goes without saying that the level of competition Rashford faces on a weekly basis is far superior, but Tomasov has done the business against some good teams in Europe before too.

In the 2017/18 season, he bagged two goals and one assist across a two-legged tie with Portugal’s Sporting CP in the round of 32, and last year he scored once and assisted once in a 2-0 victory over Rennes, who let’s not forget gave Arsenal a scare, beating the Gunners 3-1 at home.

He averaged an impressive 2.2 shots, 1.8 key passes and 1.3 dribbles per game in Europe last term, and whenever his side are playing up to a difficult opposition, he is the man who steps up and shows what he is made of.

Tomasov is as versatile as they come – Transfermarkt list seven different positions – and his ability to pop up anywhere on the pitch with a goal or assist makes him a threat no matter who he is playing.

Make no mistake about it, the Red Devils could live to regret it if they overlook Astana’s Croatian born star.

Leeds defender Leif Davis could fix their big pre-season concern

[ad_pod ]

“Very good, Davis, very good”

They were the words bellowed by Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa at Leif Davis when the club drew with Cagliari in pre-season.

The youngster has come on leaps and bounds over the past year or so, initially earning his first-team debut under the Argentine in 2018 against Aston Villa.

Davis started at left-back, stepping in for Barry Douglas as a late replacement in the starting XI.

During that match, according to stats based Twitter account LUFC Data, he recovered the ball nine times, more than anyone else on the pitch.

For Bielsa, that was one of the first incidents where, as he once quoted, Davis was very good.

That hasn’t stopped there, however, and the new campaign has seen him take on greater responsibility within the Leeds side.

With Tom Pearce departing the door has  opened for the 19-year-old, who has played three times already this term.

He earned starts against Salford and Stoke in the Carabao Cup, as well as featuring for five minutes vs Bristol City on the opening weekend.

As we enter September, he sits just two appearances off the number he managed last term.

Across 2018/19, Davis appeared four times in the league as well as getting a chance in the FA Cup.

It hasn’t been until this season that he’s truly been considered as part of the senior team and when he’s been granted an opportunity he hasn’t looked out of his depth.

After his outing versus Stoke, Bielsa said: “He was one of the players that had a positive performance in that game. He didn’t make the mistakes he made in previous games. He made corrections.”

That shows a growing maturity in Davis but it also demonstrates why the 64-year-old has such faith in the left-sided player.

Initially rising through the ranks as a left-back, he’s now making his name in the centre of defence.

With that in mind, he could prove an unlikely answer to one of Leeds’ pre-season concerns.

Before the campaign got underway, there were question marks over their defence as supporters were quick to voice their feelings on the lack of depth.

Indeed that could still prove an issue but by moving Davis into centre-back, it’s perhaps proving why they were right not to bring in someone else alongside Ben White.

The former played in a defensive two against Bristol City for the U23s last Sunday but came off with an injury, one that Leeds will be hoping doesn’t impact him too badly.

However, playing in a three-man defence is where he’s looked particularly impressive, showing qualities that prove he’s capable of filling in if and when Leeds have fitness issues.

Against Salford, he won a game-high nine duels. He also managed the most take-ons and made four interceptions.

For a player so small in stature, standing at 5 foot 4, it may come as a surprise that he can actually perform in this role.

When Leeds lost on penalties to the Potters a few weeks ago, he won six aerial duels, recovered the ball seven times and also blocked two attempts at goal, per LUFC Data.

If that wasn’t enough, he even picked up an assist for his troubles.

The teenager’s all-round game catches the eye and even at such a young age, he appears to have all the qualities required.

He reads the game well, is solid in the air and knows how to pick a pass.

It’s easy to get carried away with academy graduates but Davis is living proof of the young talent the Whites have at their disposal. Already this term Bielsa has handed senior debuts to Mateusz Bogusz and Alfie McCalmont.

Concerns at the start of the season over Leeds’ defence were warranted. They’d lost Pontus Jansson, a man who was named in the PFA Team of the Year, which left the possibility of Gaetano Berardi picking up more game time.

During his stay at Elland Road, he’s picked up six red cards. Fears over whether he could cut it were completely understandable.

Davis, though, is someone that may just be able to take over the mantle from the 31-year-old Swiss in the years to come.

Bielsa has been clever in adapting his young prodigy to play in a more central role and so far it’s paying off, largely because it’s adding depth to an area that clearly lacks meat on the bones.

Southampton starlet Jake Vokins could be a future challenger for the left-back role

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In The Pipeline series, which takes a look at some of the most promising young talent either linked with clubs or emerging from their academies…

When Matt Targett left Southampton in the summer, the Saints supporters would’ve been forgiven for thinking the squad looked a little light in the left-back department.

As a result of Targett’s £17m move to Aston Villa, Ryan Bertrand was left as the only senior figure on the left side of defence, but it has become apparent that Ralph Hasenhuttl has somewhat of an issue with him.

Summer signing Kevin Danso started the Saints’ outing against Brighton at left-back with Bertrand out injured, although Hasenhuttl later confirmed that he would’ve made that change anyway even if the former Chelsea man was fit.

And then the summer recruit was selected at full-back once again at home to Manchester United, but his afternoon was cut short when he was given his marching orders for two bookable offences.

However, Danso is a natural centre-back, whilst Hasenhuttl also played Pierre-Emile Højbjerg at left-back in the EFL Cup win over Fulham, and praised the Dane for his performance in the role.

In that respect, it seems as if the Austrian boss has some options to replace Bertrand at left-back for now.

However, neither of them are natural figures for the role, but when it eventually comes down to finding a replacement for Bertrand, Southampton could have a potential future challenger for the position in Jake Vokins.

The 19-year-old has been impressing in the Southampton academy for a while now and grabbed two assists from left-back in the recent Under-23 outing against Liverpool, a game which the Merseysiders won 4-3.

The Guardian highlighted Vokins as a player who could soon make the step up at Southampton, whilst the club themselves are seemingly keen to keep him around and develop him having handed the full-back a contract extension just last year.

With Targett no longer on the South Coast and Bertrand seemingly not in Hasenhuttl’s good books, Vokins could potentially be a future challenger for the role if he keeps up the good work.

Arsenal: Fans desperate to see German youngster sign for the club

Arsenal fans are desperate to see Kai Havertz sign for the club after he spoke to Sky in Germany, refusing to rule out a move away from Bayer Leverkusen (Sky Germany via The Metro).

The north London giants are one of a host of clubs interested in signing the star, with Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona also said to be interested.

Indeed, the Germany international enjoyed a brilliant campaign with Leverkusen last season, scoring 20 goals in all competitions. The 20-year-old has started this season in a similar vein, scoring in the opening league game against SC Paderborn and in the German cup.

It is thought the German club are confident of fetching a similar fee to the £113m Benfica collected for young star Joao Felix.

Fans seemed to be giddy with excitement at the thought of signing the playmaker, as they took to Twitter to react.

Here is a selection of tweets from the north London faithful:

Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil shares an Instagram snap with Megan Rapinoe

[ad_pod ]

The Gunners are tearing through their 2019 summer pre-season schedule and after three games, Unai Emery’s troops have already got three wins under their belts.

But now, after they’ve dealt with Fiorentina in Charlotte, they’re awaiting their final challenge in the United States as the biggest game looms just around the corner.

Arsenal will face Real Madrid to put the finishing touches on the US their tour before, not long after that, heading back into the Premier League grind come early August.

Naturally, they’ve met a real plethora of icons and superstars while touring the land across the ocean. Mesut Ozil even met with Megan Rapinoe, the US’s most recognised female footballer and recent world champion.

He quickly shared an Instagram story with her to celebrate.

Of course, this would’ve been a gigantic meet-up even if the context wasn’t so funny.

Just last week Ozil changed his hair colour after allegedly losing a bet with Alexandre Lacazette, and has since been compared to Rapinoe because of that.

Upon seeing the Gunner and his new style, Rapinoe couldn’t help but agree herself so she captioned the snap with “Game recognise game… Hair game, that is”.
