Crystal Palace eye up Borja Mayoral move

Crystal Palace are reportedly interested in signing Real Madrid striker Borja Mayoral, with the Spaniard currently on loan at Roma.

The Lowdown: Mayoral struggling at Roma

The 24-year-old moved to Rome last year but he has failed to set the world alight with the Giallorossi. In fact, Mayoral has only played 27 minutes of Serie A action so far this season, and with the striker seemingly not wanted at Real Madrid, his future remains up in the air.

Roma have an option to buy the Spaniard at the end of the campaign but current evidence suggests that won’t happen.

The Latest: Palace keen on move

According to Fichajes, Palace are showing an interest in bringing Mayoral to Selhurst Park, with Patrick Vieira keen to bolster his attacking options.

Conor Gallagher and Wilfried Zaha, neither of whom are natural centre-forwards, are the Eagles’ current top scorers this season with four goals apiece and a more prolific striker may be required to share the burden.

The Verdict: Shrewd attacking addition

Mayoral did score 10 goals in just 18 league starts for Roma last season, proving that he can be a ruthless goalscorer despite his current slump.

At 24, he also has plenty of time on his side, allowing Vieira to work with him and ensure that he becomes as good as he can possibly be. His former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane once hailed a ‘complete performance’ for him in 2017, which is big praise from such an iconic figure.

The fact that Palace could get Mayoral on a cut-price deal is an added bonus – his Madrid contract expires in the summer of 2023 – and offers another reason for snapping him up.

Vettori keen to push McCullum down the order

New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has said Brendon McCullum will continue as an opener for the ODI series against Pakistan because Jesse Ryder’s absence due to injury meant the opening line-up was already a little shaky

Cricinfo staff18-Oct-2009New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has said Brendon McCullum will continue as an opener for the ODI series against Pakistan because Jesse Ryder’s absence due to injury meant the opening line-up was already a little shaky. However Vettori said he was keen to push McCullum down the order in future in order to exploit the batting Powerplay.”The way the game is going [with batting Powerplays], it has become more important to have a guy down the order who can finish your innings off,” Vettori was quoted as saying in the . “We’ve fallen over a few times recently in the late stages so that’s maybe an option for later in the summer but, at the moment, Brendon’s got the opportunity to open against Pakistan.”Vettori said McCullum was keen to play as an opener since it gave him more opportunities to score and win games for New Zealand. “He sees opening as the opportunity to win games for your team 10 out of every 10 times you bat, whereas when you’re batting down the order you don’t get that many opportunities,” Vettori said. “The other thing is that if you look at his record as an opener, it is pretty good. Where the criticism is, that he hasn’t turned enough of his starts into centuries and really big scores.”McCullum has averaged 33.20, with one hundred and nine half-centuries, in the 57 matches he has opened for New Zealand.Vettori, who now holds selection powers along with his captaincy, said there was plenty of debate when picking the squad to play Pakistan in Abu Dhabi next month. “I guess the first thing I’ve got to point out is that I was just one of four guys on the panel. There was plenty of debate about whether we went with six batsmen or look to fill the position with another allrounder and I was part of the discussions. In that case you’ve got to remove your personality, or ego, from the argument, but at the same time recognise that my view on it needed to be heard.”Vettori said New Zealand would wait on Ryder’s availability for home Test series against Pakistan that follows the ODIs to fill the gap left by Jacob Oram, who announced his decision to retire from the five-day format. “If he’s [Ryder] fit, then he can play that extra bowler role, with back-up perhaps from someone like Grant Elliott.”

Taibu keeps Zimbabwe fighting

Mohammad Nabi had the lone success, dismissing Timycen Maruma for 9•ICC

Tatenda Taibu’s second century of the match kept Zimbabwe XI alive in their four-day game against Afghanistan in Mutare. Zimbabwe, trailing by 77 on the first innings, had slipped to 102 for 5 before Taibu and Forster Mutizwa hauled the home side to a degree of safety.Taibu, serving a ten-match ban from the national side, and Mutizwa put on 165 before Taibu’s dismissal signalled the close of play. There were 19 boundaries in Taibu’s 195-ball effort while Mutizwa was more patient, taking 129 deliveries to reach 56. They were helped by some indisciplined bowling from Afghanistan, who overstepped on 18 occasions in the innings.Afghanistan got a hefty first-innings lead despite resuming the day only seven runs ahead with three wickets in hand due to a century from No. 7 Mohammad Nabi. He completely dominated a 70-run eighth-wicket stand with Dawlat Ahmadzai, who contributed only six runs. Nabi stroked 13 fours and two sixes before falling to offspinner Timycen Maruma, who finished with six wickets. Afghanistan’s innings folded within an over of Nabi’s dismissal, with no runs added to the total.

Singapore and Bahrain remain unbeaten

A round-up of the second round from Division Six of the World Cricket League in Singapore

Cricinfo staff31-Aug-2009Mulewa Dharmichand starred with bat and ball as hosts Singapore recorded their second win in Division Six of the ICC World Cricket League, beating Botswana by 55 runs at the Indian Association Ground. Dharmichand made 39 at the top of the order before Narender Reddy (40) and Anish Param (47) helped steady a shaky middle-order. But it was Saad Janjua’s entertainingly free-spirited 51 which gave Singapore the momentum they needed, an innings which included five fours and two sixes. Set 246 to win Botswana began nicely with Faisal Rana (53) and Shah Zaib Khan putting on 77 for the opening wicket but there was little fight from the middle and lower order, as Dharmichand (3 for 49) and Reddy (3 for 25) stifled their run-chase.Singapore captain Chetan Suryawanshi said he was looking forward to the next game against Bahrain. “It’s going to be a good match because we’ve both won two games but we have previously played them in an Asian Cricket Council event and both times we beat them convincingly so I’m confident.”His counterpart Omar Ali reflected on the positives after the defeat. “Those positives include the fact that the top order did particularly well today and our bowlers managed to make some good breakthroughs,” Omar said. “I feel with tomorrow’s game against Malaysia, we can definitely put up a fight against them. It’s obviously going to be tough, especially since they have come off such a commanding victory over Norway, but I’m not going to let that daunt any of my team.”Bahrain outplayed Guernsey with Adil Hanif cracking 92, to win by 62 runs at the Kallang Ground. Guernsey began strongly, however, when Blane Queripel’s two quick wickets left Bahrain limping on 39 for 3. But Hanif soon took command with 92 from 123, while their innings was given a major late boost by Azeem ul Haq’s thrilling and unbeaten 72 from 71 balls. Guernsey set off in pursuit of a tricky 252 but their top-order, like Bahrain’s, struggled to be reduced to 98 for 4. Unlike Bahrain, however, they couldn’t mount a strong enough counterattack despite 56 from Jeremy Frith and 36 from Ben Ferbrache, and they fell 62 runs short. Fahad Sadeq was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 47.It was Guernsey’s third defeat to Bahrain in the last four months, and the coach Andy Cornford obviously wasn’t pleased. “Bahrain are very positive when they bat,” he said. “They bat well and they bat deep which is something we just weren’t able to combat today. It’s something we spoke about before the match but not a plan that came off when we were out there.”We’re in a bit of dogfight now to stay in Division 6 and tomorrow’s game against Norway is going to be crucial for us, so we’ve got to go in there with a good attitude despite the loss today.”Over at The Padang, Malaysia completely outplayed Norway, beating them by nine wickets with more than 18 overs to spare. Norway could only manage 188 in their innings, Adeel Ibrar top-scoring with 66 from 100 balls, while Shahid Ahmed made 41. Malaysia lost Shafiq Sharif† early for 8 before Rakesh Madhavan (95*) and Ahmed Faiz put on an unbroken second-wicket stand of 167 to seal the match in emphatic style.Malaysia captain Suhan Alagaratnam was happy with the way his players carried themselves in the field. “I’m really happy with the way my team came through today and the boys really played well,” Alagaratnam said. “I think we just played more freely today and enjoyed ourselves out in the field. We showed everyone that we can bounce back from defeat by winning by nine wickets and I hope we carry this momentum through to the next matches.”

White 'shocked' at late call-up

A series of late-night and early-morning telephone calls didn’t leave too many smiling faces among the Cricket Australia hierarchy over the past two days. But the one man to profit from Andrew Symonds’ latest blunder was Cameron White, who was named as his replacement for the ICC World Twenty20 and flies out for London on Friday night.”Obviously a bit of a shock to get a call this morning,” White said in Melbourne on Friday. “It’s been a bit of a rush since then, packing a few bags and things like that. What’s happened has happened. It’s pretty disappointing for the team and Andrew as a person and a mate. Hopefully we can move on.”White edged out his Victoria team-mate Brad Hodge for the late call-up but it could yet be a whirlwind trip. He will barely have time to make it through customs and to the Oval for Australia’s first match against West Indies and, if Australia should fail to progress past the group stage, he could be on a plane home as early as Tuesday.”I arrive in the country about an hour before the first game, so it’ll be interesting if I get a call-up there,” he said. “I feel as though I’m ready to play so if I get the opportunity hopefully I can make the most of it.”Coming from the IPL, I didn’t play much there but I had a good chance to train with some of the best players going around. I’ve done a fair bit over the last couple of weeks so I feel as though I’m ready to play.”White began training with the Victoria squad this week and was planning to relax with a few games of golf and as an AFL spectator over the next fortnight. He had already put behind him the disappointment of slipping out of Australia’s squad over the past couple of months. He was part of the limited-overs group in South Africa in March but was overlooked for Australia’s series against Pakistan in the UAE and most disheartening was being omitted from the ICC World Twenty20 squad. White made his name as one of the world’s best players in the shortest format in 2006 when he blasted a then-record 55-ball century for Somerset.”I always thought I was around the mark with the Twenty20 stuff,” he said. “I was always hopeful of originally getting picked in this squad when it was first announced. I was a little bit disappointed but you move on. I’ve moved on and hopefully I get another opportunity.”

Preview: Sunderland XI vs Robins

Lee Johnson’s Sunderland side head into their upcoming League One fixture on Tuesday evening in fantastic form, with the Black Cats remaining unbeaten over their last seven fixtures in all competitions, as well as currently sitting second in the third tier standings.

However, while the visit of 14th-placed Cheltenham Town should not cause Sunderland too many problems on paper, the Mackems boss has a number of fitness concerns in his first-team squad at present, something which could well pose the 40-year-old with something of a selection headache against the Robins.

So, will Johnson make any changes to the team that started last time out against Bolton Wanderers? Here’s how we think Sunderland could line up against Cheltenham, along with the latest team and injury news…

With both Callum Doyle and Dennis Cirkin appearing to be doubts for the Cheltenham fixture due to injury, Johnson may well be forced into at least two changes from the side that defeated Bolton last weekend, however, we predict the 40-year-old will make one further adjustment to his starting XI on Tuesday.

Regarding Doyle and Cirkin, the two players who replaced the stricken duo against the Trotters, Bailey Wright and Niall Huggins, come into the side to face the Robins, with the 20-year-old Leeds United loanee playing on the opposite flank to his natural position at right-back.

Elsewhere, the duo of Luke O’Nien and Dan Neil retain their spots in the middle of the park, while Elliot Embleton, who started on the left-wing in place of the sidelined Lynden Gooch last time out, moves into central attacking midfield.

As such, the £2.25m-rated Alex Pritchard could be set for a return to the Sunderland bench, with 20-year-old Bayern Munich loanee Leon Dajaku staring on the left-hand side of the Black Cats’ attack, while Ross Stewart retains his place up top ahead of Nathan Broadhead.

The cash-versus-country debate is rearing its head following the news yesterday that Lalit Modi, the head of the Indian Premier League, wants England’s players to make themselves available for four weeks each year, increasing the likelihood that some members will have to decide between national pride and life-changing sums of money. The ECB held talks with Modi during England’s tour of India late last year, and it was thought that the two parties had agreed on England’s players appearing in the IPL for just 15 days. Now, however, Modi’s demands – as reported in the – could force players to choose between representing England in the series against West Indies next May or hot-foot it to India to earn their millions. The difficulty ECB faces is ensuring they protect both their investments: firstly Test cricket, which remains a big-earner for the board and the grounds in England, and secondly players’ wishes to make serious amounts of money.”This development is a serious concern,” Sean Morris, chief executive of the Professional Cricketers’ Association, told the . “We are working through this with the ECB but clearly it is a concern to India and has a potential impact on English cricket. If we are the only country to have players not appearing in the IPL then that would not be a good prospect.”The IPL is due to span six weeks, beginning provisionally on April 10 with the final on May 29, and if the ECB allows its players to play in India then they will miss the first Test against West Indies at Lord’s on May 6.Kevin Pietersen, the recently axed England captain, is just one high-profile name to have expressed interest in playing in the IPL. Although he reaffirmed his keeness to play for England and score a mountain of runs, Modi and his millions could yet lure him and other players.
