West Brom can avoid Premier League relegation

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, former West Brom player Carlton Palmer discussed the chances of his old side avoiding relegation this season and remaining in the Premier League.

The Baggies are currently 19th in English football’s top flight, nine points away from safety, and face Everton next before taking on Newcastle United in a massive game at the bottom of the table.

It is quite a gap that needs to be closed, but Palmer does not think it is impossible, backing West Brom to beat the drop if they can manage to win maximum points from those two upcoming fixtures.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, Palmer said:

“The next two games for me are absolute deciders, absolute deciders. They’ve got Everton on Thursday night and then they’ve got Newcastle three days later. Both of these games, they’re both two cup finals.

“If Sam [Allardyce] can pick up maximum points from those two games, I give them a great chance of staying up. But if they drop even a point against Everton or Newcastle, I can’t see them staying up, I just can’t see it. But they’ve got a great opportunity now.”

Undoubtedly, the next two games for West Brom are huge. If Allardyce’s side can beat both Everton and Newcastle, they could move to within just three points of the latter in the battle for Premier League survival.

It, of course, will not be easy, as Everton continue to impress, following up their first victory against Liverpool at Anfield since 1999 with a 1-0 win over Southampton on Monday.

Elsewhere, another relegation rival in Fulham have managed to find some form of late, not losing in any of their last five Premier League matches, further highlighting West Brom’s need to pick up points this week.

Southampton: Halsey discusses VAR incident in the Fulham game%%sep%% %%sitename%%

Former referee Mark Halsey has recently discussed a penalty incident for Southampton in their recent Premier League game.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men were recently held to a 0-0 draw by Fulham at Craven Cottage but after the game, the Saints boss made it clear that he thinks that his side should’ve had a penalty for a handball by Ola Aina. A cross had hit the Torino loanee’s arm but after a VAR check, play continued and no spot-kick was awarded.

When talking about the incident, Hasenhuttl said: “He goes with his hand to the ball and that it is a clear goal chance for us also so we were unlucky not to get a penalty there.”

Halsey gives his opinion about a potential Southampton penalty

Halsey was speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern and he talked about the possibility of whether Southampton should’ve had a penalty for Aina’s potential handball. The former referee believes that it was a subjective call and while Saints fans would want a penalty for that, the Fulham defender Aina had his arms in a natural position and he doesn’t think the call was a clear and obvious error.

He said:

“Looking at that, it’s subjective and if you’re a Southampton fan, you want it but his arms in a natural position in a running motion. I would agree (with the officials) that it wasn’t a penalty. In my own personal opinion, you don’t want to see penalties given for those sort of situations.”

The game saw Southampton have the ball in the back of the net on two occasions, but both goals were correctly ruled out for offside.

Penalty could’ve been a game-changer for Southampton

Hasenhuttl’s men currently find themselves in ninth place in the Premier League table and they have 25 points in the bag so far. Having said that though, they are only three points behind third-placed Leicester City (as per Whoscored).

If Southampton had won the game, they would’ve been in the third spot in the table but the draw means that they have dropped out of the top-four. It shows how important the handball call involving Aina was and it turned out to be vital when it came to determining Southampton’s position in the table.

However, the home side had generated an Expected Goals tally of 0.87 in the game – higher than Southampton’s tally of 0.12. So perhaps, getting a point from the tie wasn’t a bad result at all for the Saints, despite the frustration of Hasenhuttl.

Max Aarons: Norwich ace shows Everton what he can add with January transfer

Max Aarons showed against Barnsley on Saturday what sort of player Marcel Brands can add in the January transfer window should Everton look to sign the Norwich City full-back.

According to TEAMtalk, the Toffees are one of the 20-year-old’s biggest admirers ahead of the winter market, having seemingly decided that now is the perfect time to find the long-term successor for Seamus Coleman.

Carlo Ancelotti is keen to secure his future right-back well before Coleman’s contract expires in 2022 and could look to tap into Everton’s array of scouting reports on Aarons, as the Goodison Park natives have monitored the Canaries’ up-and-coming talents for the past two years.

Norwich fended off interest in Aarons from FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich in the summer, with the powerhouse duo both recognising the London-born talent as one of the best young full-backs in Europe.

Manchester United are also eying Aarons in the January sales after failing to seal a deal in the off-season, but face paying close to £20m for the defender Daniel Farke has called on to start all 23 Championship fixtures since Norwich’s return to the second-tier.

Farke is a vivid advocate of Aaron’s abilities and believes the full-back, who Ronald Koeman is a keen admirer of, is only just getting started.

“Max is outstanding in many topics. I can’t praise him enough for what he has done since his first appearance,” said Farke, via quotes by the Pink Un. “When you have the clubs interested in him who were interested, it is easy to lose the ground under the feet.

“Maybe you think you know everything about football. He is always looking to work harder. Never ill, never injured. If the best clubs in the world are interested, then maybe there is not that much more space to improve.”

Aarons had a mixed day as Norwich edged a 1-0 win over Barnsley on Saturday to stay four points clear of Swansea City in first place, as he perfectly teed up Todd Cantwell for a volley in the first-half that the midfielder blazed over but he also came close to costing his side the win.

The £5,000-per-week prospect misjudged the flight of a late diagonal ball forward that gifted Michal Helik space to snatch a point, only for the Tykes defender to fluff his lines and divert a low cross wide from close range at the back post.

Aarons frequently lost possession, too, with the 20-year-old turning the ball over 25 times, while misplacing 17 of his 46 passes, failing to find a teammate with one of two crosses, losing five of seven ground duels and one of three aerial contests, per SofaScore.

He was additionally dribbled past once, failed to register a single successful tackle and lost in three of four attempted dribbles, but stood up to record 75 touches, two interceptions, a clearance and play a key ball.

Ancelotti would see Aarons’ display against Barnsley as the player work in progress, with plenty of positives but also more than a few negatives, in his search of Coleman’s eventual successor.

AND in other news: Marcel Brands must axe a total dud costing Everton £600k-a-game.

Rangers: Fans livid at Scottish League Cup chaos

Some Glasgow Rangers fans are livid as Dundee have been given a 3-0 victory in the Scottish League Cup.

The Championship side were set to play Forfar Athletic in the group stage of the competition on Tuesday evening but the match was called off in the build-up after one of Forfar’s players contracted Covid-19. As a result, they informed the SPFL that they were unable to fulfill the fixture, which led to Dundee being given a 3-0 win.

This was one of two matches that ended in such a manner, with Kilmarnock’s clash versus Falkirk also unable to be played. It is important to mention that this is only the first round of the competition.

These Rangers supporters, it seems, were absolutely perplexed as to why this decision was taken, and they also seem to fear for the rest of the competition. They took to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below:

Leeds must give Bouy the same treatment as Augustin

Leeds United had a great transfer window in terms of incomings, but there are a few players on their books that they would have liked to have gotten rid of.

Indeed, it has been reported that Jay-Roy Grot will not play another game for the club, while Ouasim Bouy has seemingly had that fate thrust onto him ever since Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival at the club.

Fortunately, the Whites are reportedly preparing for talks to terminate Bouy’s contract, and that is probably for the best for everyone involved.

It’s easy to forget that Bouy is even a Leeds player, he’s not played a single game for the club and he’s been seen more often in the Netherlands than in West Yorkshire these days.

Bielsa seemingly has no use for him, and for that reason, Leeds should give him the same treatment they gave another player who Bielsa didn’t want, Jean-Kevin Augustin.

Both Leeds and RB Leipzig washed their hands with Augustin this summer, sanctioning a free transfer move to Nantes as the legal battle wages on over United’s supposed obligation to buy the forward.

However, no matter whether or not Leeds have to fork out the money to purchase Augustin, they were more than happy to let him go and ply his trade elsewhere, and that’s what needs to happen with Bouy.

The Dutchman may well be comfortable picking up thousands of pounds a week for absolutely nothing, but he was once touted as the next big thing and if he’s to get back on track in any sort of capacity, Leeds need to cut all ties with him.

His former youth coach gave his footballing ability a glowing review, saying:

“If we’re talking only about football, the simple fact about Ouasim is that he was a very talented attacking midfielder. He was a creative player with a golden left foot.

“He scored tremendous goals but he had this great feeling for when to play the through pass and how to put attackers in good positions to score. That was his great asset.”

There’s clearly a talented player in there somewhere, but Leeds don’t want him, and he doesn’t want to be at Leeds, so the best thing for everyone is to just let him go in the same way Augustin was allowed to leave.

West Ham must sign Real Madrid star Luka Jovic this summer

According to The Daily Express, West Ham are lining up Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic as a possible replacement for Sebastien Haller.

What’s the word?

After arriving for a club-record fee last summer from Eintracht Frankfurt, Haller endured an inconsistent debut campaign in English football, netting just seven times in 32 Premier League games.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Now, The Daily Express claim that French side AS Monaco are keen to end his stay at the London Stadium, with Niko Kovac – his former boss at Eintracht – keen on a reunion.

The report adds that in Haller’s exit, the club will target the likes of Jovic and Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi.

Compared to Luis Suarez

Out of the two options, Jovic certainly seems like the stand-out one. Whilst his first season with Real Madrid hasn’t exactly gone to plan – he played just 27 times across all competitions and completed the full 90 minutes just once in La Liga – he still remains an elite finisher.

Former Serbia manager Mladen Krstajic said: “He’s a classic goal-getter with great control of the ball and a good understanding of the game. I’d probably compare him to Luis Suarez. He’s courageous and dangerous at any moment because he’s always lying in wait for his chance or any inattention from the opponent.”

Jovic’s final campaign with Frankfurt saw him rack up an impressive 27 goals, with ten of them coming in the Europa League alone as the Bundesliga side were eventually knocked out in the semi-finals stage by Chelsea.

His teammate at Eintracht, Alexander Meier, spoke just as highly about his finishing abilities, saying: “In training you could see immediately that he’s just amazing in front of goal. He has everything. Heading, shooting, left foot, right foot. Inside the box he knows exactly where the ball will fall down.” Kevin-Prince Boateng meanwhile simply insisted he could go on to become a world-class striker, and that he is a “street footballer” at heart.

Whilst GSB may get criticism for splashing out a club-record fee for a signing like Haller and then letting him go just a year later, if that means potentially bringing in Jovic as a replacement, then it really would be something to give them some credit for.
