Real Madrid’s Zinedine Zidane might finally be on the right track with his team

Last weekend was quite remarkable for Real Madrid but in so many ways, it was also much more than just a single win for a team that’s largely used to doing exactly that most of the time.

Zinedine Zidane hasn’t enjoyed the best of times in his grand return to the Spanish capital and granted, the opening stages of the ongoing 2019/20 season have been quite rocky for the French manager.

Slowly but surely, however, Real Madrid have been picking up the pace and silently getting better and better with each passing game.

Previously, the team struggled to string together good results, following a maximum of two scrappy wins with an obligatory defeat or a disappointing draw but suddenly, the sky seems much clearer above the Santiago Bernabeu.

After all, we’re talking about a team that is undefeated in their last five outings, tallying only one goalless draw in the process and not conceding a single one along the way as well.

If that wasn’t impressive enough then the fact that Zidane’s men have scored a total of 16 goals in those five games definitely should be.

And especially if we compare it to the start of their ongoing campaign.

At the very beginning, it took Real Madrid a total of ten games to get to that exact tally and they also needed six games to record their first clean sheet of the season.

By all means, a clear improvement in all aspects can be seen in the last couple of weeks already.

There are, however, a couple of factors that have to be taken into consideration.

Of course, the emergence of Federico Valverde, the 21-year-old midfield gem that has rejuvenated Real Madrid’s middle of the park, as well as the arrival of Rodrygo Goes, their young prodigy, to the scene.

But when everything is said and done, we shouldn’t look past Zidane who has obviously managed to get the team to dance to his tune.

And not a moment too soon.

Let’s see if Real Madrid can continue this winning trend moving forward.

Sami Hyypia thinks Mo Salah and Sadio Mane dispute was a positive sign for Liverpool

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Sami Hyypia has weighed in on the dispute that occurred between Sadio Mane and Mo Salah against Burnley, but thinks it is a positive sign as it shows the determination of the squad to win.

What did he say?

Liverpool have adopted a winning mentality since Klopp arrived, that is clear through their current run of 17 consecutive Premier League wins, as well as the way in which players such as Georginio Wijnaldum and Trent Alexander-Arnold speak about their desire to win trophies.

As a result, there is a competitive feeling throughout the squad, with each determined to succeed, and against Burnley that resulted in a quarrel between the two front men.

A lot was said about how the clash was a worrying sign for the Reds, but their former captain believes that it is insead an example of how strong the dressing room is.

He told The Daily Star: “It just shows that everyone wants to win together and that shows what a great group Klopp has built with that dynamic.

“It’s always good to have that kind of openness where players can call each other out. That’s part of the culture of winning. There’s nothing wrong with it.

“All successful teams have that desire which means they demand more from each other. I remember some sparks flying between players when I was at Anfield – and that’s only good for the team.”

The former Finland international’s view is supported by the fact Liverpool continue to win, brushing aside Chelsea and Leicester since, with a last minute goal against the latter an example of their positive spirit and never-say die attitude.

Dispute was a positive

With Liverpool demolishing Burnley 3-0 in the now infamous match, the dispute between Mane and Salah was the only blemish on the win, but it has proved that the only negative was in publicity, as the pair continue to perform to a top-class standard.

Since that match Mane and Salah have contributed a combined total of five goals and assists in four league games, and the Reds haven’t dropped a point, thus proving Ian Wright wrong, who said that it was a portrayal of sign of deep anger that had been building up for a long time.

He wasn’t the only one who had a negative view of the incident, with Michael Owen labelling Salah as “selfish”, and the saga lasting as long as Liverpool’s trip to Chelsea a few weeks after, with Frank Lampard asked his view on the matter.

The coverage of the dispute was blown way out of proportion. Jurgen Klopp addressed the issue post-match and both players showed there was no bad feeling between them via a social media post, and therefore Hyypia is correct in his assessment.

Both players are brilliant forwards at the top of the game and it is only natural that each wants to get on the scoresheet as often as possible, and the fact they are so keen to do so can only be advantageous to Liverpool.

The fact the team continues to perform to a winning standard is evidence of that, and only when results falter should question be raised.

Sheffield Wednesday fans rave about Kadeem Harris after start to the season

[ad_pod ]

Sheffield Wednesday have been through the motions already this season – and it is only the middle of September.

On the eve of pre-season, Steve Bruce ditched the club to replace Rafa Benitez at Newcastle then under caretaker boss Lee Bullen they started the campaign with back-to-back wins before slipping to three defeats in four games.

That led to the appointment of Garry Monk, and his first match in charge was a victory in a Yorkshire derby over Huddersfield.

One player that has started all seven of their league encounters is Kadeem Harris, a permanent arrival from Cardiff City this summer.

He’s scored two goals and picked up his first assist of the 2019/20 campaign on Sunday when he found Steven Fletcher with a cross for the opener.

The best part of Harris’ arrival was the fact that he didn’t cost a penny, which one supporter picked up on by questioning “how on earth did we get this guy for free?”

Another fan claimed the 26-year-old was in contention for the Player of the Year award already while one more labelled him a “quality player.”

Harris played 13 times in the Premier League last season for the Bluebirds, and he will surely be hoping that his contribution at Hillsborough can help fire Wednesday back to the big time.

Here’s the best of the reaction:

Leeds captain Liam Cooper takes to Twitter after signing new contract

[ad_pod ]For the first time in a long while, the Leeds United fanbase don’t have anything to complain about. The club sit third in the league, and they’ve just signed three important players to new deals.Stuart Dallas, Kalvin Phillips and Liam Cooper have all agreed to new contracts that will keep them at the Elland Road outfit for the foreseeable future.Club captain Cooper took to Twitter after signing his new contract.

The Scotland international posted exactly the type of tweet you’d want to see from your skipper.

He said that he’s proud to be staying with Leeds, but he immediately switched his focus back to the task at hand as he said that he wants to continue working towards the ultimate goal.

Presumably, the ultimate goal is promotion to the Premier League, and the Whites are in a fantastic position to go on and achieve that this season as they’ve started the season brilliantly, losing just once in their opening six matches.

Sunderland fans adore throwback video of Julio Arca

Loads of Sunderland fans have been reacting to a throwback video posted by the club’s official Twitter account, as they celebrated a home debut goal from fan favourite Julio Arca.

It’s not been a great few years for the Stadium of Light faithful. Back-to-back relegation seasons were absolutely brutal for the fans, while the actions of players like Jack Rodwell, Darron Gibson and Papy Djilobodji have only compounded their misery.

Things may be looking up after the latest rumours regarding a possible takeover though, and fans are also enjoying an old video of one of their favourite ever players.

Arca spent six years on Wearside, racking up 164 appearances, scoring 19 times and adding another nine assists.

And one of those goals came on his home debut, as he glanced in a header against West Ham.

He celebrated with more passion than the three aforementioned names put together ever had for the club, which is perhaps how he endeared himself to the fans so quickly.

Tottenham facing make-or-break season to finally end wait for silverware

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

11 years and six months. The last time Tottenham won a major piece of silverware. For a club who have long been involved in the ‘big six’ conversation, that is a remarkably long time to go without a trophy. Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival as manager has certainly brought the club much closer to ending that wait, but the fact they haven’t remains a stick to beat them with.

Last season’s heroic run to the Champions League final was sadly ended by Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, whilst challenges for the Premier League title have fallen by the wayside on a couple of occasions. But this campaign feels rather pivotal. Some of the side’s key players are into the final year of their deal, and there is a big chance that they will not be at the club this time next season.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The likes of Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, amongst others, have formed part of the cornerstone of Spurs’ side in recent years. They have been as integral as anyone in establishing the Lilywhites as a top-four team, but are also just as culpable for failing to deliver a trophy.

In having just a year left on their contract, there is an argument to be made that they will wait and see how the team performs over the course of the next few months, before they make a concrete decision on their futures. If Pochettino can inspire his side to greater heights and finally put their hands on a trophy, then there is no reason why those players wouldn’t stay.

But if it doesn’t work out, then three of his most high-profile players could be walking out the door.

So, what could it potentially mean for Pochettino himself? Will he feel as though he has taken the club as far as he can? All of European football’s top sides would love to lure the Argentine away from north London, and another season without getting the trophy monkey off their back, could be the nail in the coffin for his time at Spurs, especially if those three integral figures depart.

Make no mistake, this truly does feel like a make-or-break season for Tottenham and the Pochettino era.

Crystal Palace players’ relationship with Wilfried Zaha seems fine despite transfer chaos

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Having handed in a transfer request on the eve of the window’s deadline, you wouldn’t expect Wilfried Zaha’s dramatic actions to have gone down too well with those who hold Crystal Palace close to their hearts.

Presumably, many of the supporters wouldn’t have been too happy given the timing of it, whilst you can only wonder what was going through his teammates’ heads after arguably the best player in the squad declared his intentions to leave.

The Ivory Coast international made no secret of his desire to leave the club, amid bids from both Arsenal and Everton for his services in the summer window.

However, all seems to be well at Selhurst Park despite Zaha’s late antics in the window.

The 26-year-old was summoned off the bench by Roy Hodgson and subbed on in the Eagles’ Premier League opener, coincidentally against Everton, and was greeted with a warm round of applause and a serenading from the Selhurst Park faithful who bellowed out his chant.

After all he has done for the club in helping them achieve promotion and Premier League survival, this makes sense.

But how have his teammates reacted? Well, Scottish midfielder James McCarthy has spoken glowingly about Zaha’s reaction following his transfer request, saying: “I must say his attitude has been amazing since he has come back.

“He has accepted it and is fully committed to the squad, the team and the fans — look at the reception [they gave him], they appreciate everything he has done for this club. He is a brilliant lad.”

Hodgson has also revealed that Zaha has trained better since his failed attempt to leave, whilst a ‘clear the air’ meeting called by Mamadou Sakho has helped ease any lingering tension between the forward and the rest of the squad.

In the aftermath of such a dramatic decision so late in the window, it seems all is well between Zaha, his teammates and his adorning supporters.

West Ham unlikely to move for Costa this summer

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

West Ham United have little interest in signing Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid this summer, per ClaretandHugh.

What’s the word?

The ex-Chelsea striker has been linked with a return to the Premier League after scoring just twice in La Liga last season and Everton have been credited with an interest.

A report from the Daily Mirror claimed that the Hammers were also keen on bringing the Spain international back to England.

But ClaretandHugh, the trusted West Ham news source, insists that the club are not set to bid for the 30-year-old.

They quote a source who says: “I can’t see that happening. He has shown he can cause issues and perhaps he’s not the player he once was.”

An alternative lined up?

West Ham had better have a decent alternative, here.

Costa has scored goals at the highest level throughout his career and won two Premier League titles during his time at Stamford Bridge, netting 58 goals in 120 appearances for the Blues.

There can be few strikers with as much talent available this summer.

The Mirror do not mention a fee but there will seldom be such a player on offer in the transfer window.

As it is, the Irons currently have just Javier Hernandez and Jordan Hugill up front.

They need to strengthen and a deal for Costa would set the Irons apart, having signed one of the most fearsome forwards in Europe.

This is a baffling decision, then, unless the Irons somehow find a more accomplished forward.

Spoiler alert: They won’t.
