Blackburn fans celebrate Mowbray’s tenure

[ad_pod ]

Blackburn Rovers recently announced that manager Tony Mowbray has reached the two-year mark in his tenure at Ewood Park.

Mowbray took charge of Rovers in February 2017, at which point the club were struggling in the Championship. The 55-year-old manager was not able to keep them in the second tier, but he had instigated an improvement in form and retained his position into the new League One season.

Venky’s Ltd, the owners of Blackburn Rovers, retained faith in Mowbray and were repaid when he brought the club back into the Championship at the first time of asking.

Now, Rovers are undergoing a period of poor form, having lost their last four league outings, but they look to be safe from any relegation fears this time around. Considering the state of the club when Mowbray came in, the coach must be commended for the work he has done in steadying the ship and restoring the side as an aspirational one, rather than a fearful, failing one.

Following the club’s two-year announcement, plenty of Rovers fans took to Twitter to applaud the work Mowbray has done so far…

Brands admits he would love Ihattaren at Everton

[ad_pod ]

Everton’s sporting director Marcel Brands has revealed that he would love to bring PSV Eindhoven youngster Mohammed Ihattaren to Goodison Park.

The 17-year-old is widely regarded as one of the best young talents in European football and could be about to spark a scramble for his services.

What has Brands said?

Brands told Voetbal International:

“Frankly, I’d like to have him at Everton tomorrow. He’s so good, but I don’t think that’s the path he should take. He will need an intermediate step later.

“In that respect, Mo is good at PSV. The club plays European football, he has a great chance of playing time and he is in the national teams.

“If he now went abroad, he has a lot less guarantees. The step to the Premier League is really big and it can also go wrong with a talent.”

It is clear that Brands is a huge fan of Ihattaren, but Everton’s sporting director feels that the teenager should remain at PSV for now.

The fact that Brands has dropped the attacker’s name, however, is a strong indication that the Toffees are keeping a close eye on his development.

Barcelona have also been credited with an interest in the Netherlands Under-19 international, who has made three first-team appearances for PSV this term.

How good could he become?

It is always difficult to predict just how good players can become, particularly in this case as Ihattaren only turned 17 earlier this week.

The fact that he is getting minutes for a PSV team chasing the Dutch title, however, suggests that he is a pretty special talent.

A seven-time Under-19 Netherlands international, Ihattaren is capable of playing in attacking midfield, as a right winger and also in central midfield, according to Transfermarkt.

The teenager’s debut in the Eredivisie came against FC Groningen last month and he has since appeared against both Fortuna Sittard and FC Utrecht in the league.

Pl>ymaker FC’s Matchday with Max caught up with Jamaica’s women’s team. See what happened when he met the history makers in the video below…

The fact that Ihattaren has a contract with PSV until the summer of 2021 does stand the club in good stead, but it seems likely that he will eventually move on.

Brands has confirmed that Everton are watching, but the Merseyside giants will seemingly have to fight off a host of Europe’s biggest clubs if they wish to seal his signature in the future.

Crystal Palace fans react to Mike Dean’s poor officiating of Doncaster clash

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace went one step closer to the FA Cup final with a 2-0 win over Doncaster Rovers on Sunday ensuring they progressed to the quarter-finals – a feat manager Roy Hodgson has achieved just twice previously in all of his years in the dugout.

First-half goals from Jeffrey Schlupp and Max Meyer proved decisive although the Eagles could have been out of sight had referee Mike Dean been inclined to award the visitors a penalty.

Two handball incidents were dismissed by Dean, with the second in particular sending the Selhurst Park faithful into outrage. First, Rovers’ Danny Andrew appeared to swing his arm at Scott Dann’s header, before Blackburn loanee Paul Downing blocked Patrick van Aanholt’s cutback with his left-arm.

In this era of ‘big 6’ dominance, has finishing 7th become as good as winning a trophy? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…

Play continued in both instances, with Downing comically holding his face after making contact with his hand and Palace would surely have been furious had their hosts capitalised on their second-half domination – Alfie May looked likely to score and Wayne Hennessey cast an unassured figure between the sticks.

Nevertheless, the win sees the south London outfit through to the last eight of the competition and, with bitter rivals Brighton also emerging victorious in their cup clash with Derby, there could be a spicy fixture to come.

Here’s how Palace fans on Twitter reacted to Mike Dean’s clanger…

  • Club warned to learn from 'mistakes'
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Spanish giants are said to be closing in on a deal to land the French forward after he informed Paris Saint-Germain that he will leave when his contract expires at the end of the season. His signing could mark a new Galactico era for Madrid, recreating the time they signed Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and David Beckham together. However, ex-Madrid star Ivan Helguera has warned they could end up failing to live up to their potential.

    WHAT HELGUERA SAID

Helguera said at a La Liga and DAZN event: "It could be, what happens is that you have to see the mistakes that were made , there were many figures and very good players… but nothing was won. In Madrid it is important to win every year. It is wonderful to have all those players, but you have to know how to balance with a good squad. For Mbappe to come to Real Madrid would be an impressive signing and upwards it would be difficult to beat."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mbappe would be joining a a squad that already boasts the likes of Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior, Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni, as well as veteran stars Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. Despite the quality at Carlo Ancelotti's disposal, the Santiago Bernabeu side failed to win La Liga or the Champions League last season.

Desde o começo vim buscando ajudar defensiva a ofensivamente e, graças à Deus, deu certo – finalizou.

Bernardo Silva, Marco Asensio and the 10 players PSG are most likely to sign in the 2023 summer transfer window

The French champions are expected to make a number of moves over the coming months as they look to fill holes in their squad and challenge in Europe

It will be a busy summer at Paris Saint-Germain. Lionel Messi is certain to leave. So too is Sergio Ramos. Neymar could also yet go. A number of squad players will also depart, either on free transfers or for relatively low fees. Theirs is a squad that is far from complete heading into the transfer window.

The French champions, then, have got some business to do, though they are wasting little time in getting going. Inter defender Milan Skriniar is set to arrive after the Champions League final, while Marco Asensio is reportedly close to sealing a move following his release by Real Madrid.

But there is work to be done elsewhere. Kylian Mbappe has made no secret of the fact that he wants his club to bring in some new faces, and there are weaknesses all over the pitch to address. PSG do not need a rebuild, but the squad requires investment. And who, exactly, can be brought in?

GOAL takes a look at 10 of the players PSG are most likely to sign this summer…

Getty Bernardo Silva (Man City)

PSG seemed certain to bring Bernardo in last summer, and as reported by GOAL, had an agreement in place to bring him to Parc des Princes. However, financial obstacles prevented the Parisians from completing the deal, and the winger stayed at Man City.

This time, though, finances shouldn't be an issue, creating a path for the Portuguese's signature to be sealed early if City are willing to sell. While he wouldn't serve as a Messi replacement, the winger would add some trickery and creativity in the final third.

AdvertisementGettyMarco Asensio (Real Madrid)

If reports are to be believed, this one is already over the line. Asensio is a curious case. He will come on a free, having seen his deal run out at Real Madrid, and at 27, he should be right in the middle of his prime. However, he's never hit the same level he was at before he tore his ACL in July 2019.

Since his return, he's been a maddeningly inconsistent presence for Madrid, largely coming off the bench with Rodrygo and Federico Valverde favoured at his right-wing spot. Still, with an extended run in a side, he could be an impact signing — especially on a free.

(C)Getty ImagesRandal Kolo Muani (Eintracht Frankfurt)

The yearly quest for young French talent starts again. Kolo Muani has been loosely linked with PSG for a year now, and has been identified among a trio of young, homegrown players the Parisians are after.

And this one makes a lot of sense. PSG have needed a No.9 for some time now, and Mbappe has made it very clear that he wants to play with one. Kolo Muani isn't quite a perfect striker — not yet — but he appears to be a good fit. That he has impressed alongside Mbappe for France is a bonus.

He won't come cheap, with Eintracht Frankfurt reportedly slapping a €100 million (£89m/$107m) price tag on the 24-year-old. But that's simply the going rate these days.

(C)GettyImagesManuel Ugarte (Sporting CP)

Could it be a smart piece of business from PSG? Ugarte is exactly the kind of midfielder that they need. With enough bite and a willingness to run, at an affordable price, the Uruguayan would slot in alongside Marco Verratti perfectly.

Danilo Pereira is a solid defensive midfielder, but Ugarte has the potential to be one of the best in Europe and the perfect answer to PSG's woes at the position.

And the Parisians are reportedly fairly advanced in negotiations and are willing to pay his €60m (£52m/$64m) release clause, though they face stiff competition from Chelsea for Ugarte's signature. It's up to the player, but PSG have put themselves in a good position to make a solid signing.

É importante fazer a leitura.

> Confira informações e estatísticas do Brasileirão

Glamorgan debt slashed in council deal

Glamorgan’s finances have received a major boost with Cardiff Council writing off 70% of a loan made in 2006 to fund the redevelopment of Sophia Gardens.

The new Swalec Stadium is a significant financial burden for Glamorgan•Glamorgan CCC

Glamorgan’s finances have received a major boost with Cardiff Council writing off 70% of a loan made in 2006 to fund the redevelopment of Sophia Gardens. £6.4 million was owed to the council as of December but this will now be reduced by £4.4m and the remaining debt restructured. The council are one of Glamorgan’s main creditors and, following a request to write off a large chunk of the outstanding credit, have agreed to slash the club’s debt. Glamorgan’s other main creditors – Allied Irish Bank and former chairman Paul Russell – are owed around £10 million and have also agreed to a restructuring proposal.Glamorgan are struggling to finance their debts and were at risk of administration if their debts were not restructured.”As with many organisations, changes to the economy had a detrimental effect on Glamorgan,” Councillor and cabinet member Graham Hinchey said. “But it is imperative that this long established sporting institution does not go into administration.”Glamorgan’s ground development saw them stage an Ashes Test in 2009 and Australia will return to Cardiff for a Test this summer. Local businesses benefitted by an estimated £4m from the 2009 Test match.”The council’s decision is extremely important to the club and is one of the final pieces in the jigsaw in re-negotiating our debt,” Glamorgan chief executive Hugh Morris said. “The club still faces financial challenges in the months and years ahead and we are mindful of our responsibility to develop our business to safeguard our long-term future.”

Modi's return will alter BCCI equations, says Modi's lawyer

The Delhi High Court order to restore Lalit Modi’s passport will alter power equations in the BCCI, Modi’s lawyer Mehmood Abdi said

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Aug-20145:23

“He [Lalit Modi] is the only person who can take on Srinivasan,” says Lalit Modi’s lawyer

The Delhi High Court order to restore Lalit Modi’s passport will prove as a “rallying point” in altering power equations in the BCCI, Modi’s lawyer Mehmood Abdi has said. A two-judge bench of Badar Durrez Ahmed and Vibhu Bakhru reversed the three-year old-order that revoked Modi’s passport, paving the way for his return to India. However, Abdi said Modi hasn’t yet decided on his schedule to shift his base from London, where he has been based for more than four years.”When he is back in India, the equations in BCCI will be altered,” Abdi told ESPNcricinfo. “All the people who are feeling suffocated and who are looking to have some telling voice to take on Srinivasan will be relieved to see Lalit Modi back in India. Because he is the only person who can take on Srinivasan.”The order came as a fillip to Modi, who was recently elected as the president of the Rajasthan Cricket Association despite having been expelled for life from Indian cricket by the BCCI.Since moving to London in April 2010, citing threats to his life and after being suspended by the BCCI for various alleged defaults, Modi was charged for various Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) misappropriations. During the investigations, his passport was revoked on March 3, 2011. In January 2013, Modi’s appeal against the revocation was turned down. However, the Delhi High Court reversed the order on grounds that the documents considered while revoking his passport were “extraneous and irrelevant”.While Modi tweeted he would not comment on the order, Abdi said the development was “a delightful occasion and a reason for celebration”. “Our stand which has been taken by us all along that his passport was erroneously revoked on legally unsustainable grounds has been vindicated,” Abdi told ESPNcricinfo. “He can come back any time in India now, but he has not given us any specific schedule.”Abdi also claimed that Modi no longer has any “criminal proceedings” against him, unless the government of India appeals against the High Court order in the Supreme Court. Abdi said all the alleged FEMA violations while organising IPL 2009, which Modi has been charged for, are not against him individually. “He is one of the many BCCI office-bearers who have been charged. By the way, FEMA violation does not entail any criminal liabilities. The matter is of civil nature which entails penalties and fines, etc, so there is nothing criminal pending against him anywhere in India or abroad,” Abdi said.
