Australia search for that winning feeling

Match Facts

January 14, Melbourne

The Big Picture

Australia’s one-wicket defeat in the opening Twenty20 of the two-match series summed up the season that Shane Watson and his team are having. The stand-out performer on either side, Watson added four wickets to his rollicking half-century and was named Man of the Match, but still ended up on the losing side as England squeezed home from the final ball. Such are the vicissitudes of Twenty20 cricket, where victory can often depend upon a slice of luck at the right moment. Australia’s morale will not have been helped by yet another loss to add to their recent string of disappointments.Wednesday’s match in Adelaide had the air of a new beginning for Australia, with Cameron White taking over the leadership of the T20 side and Tim Paine acting as his deputy. There were also a few fresh faces, with Aaron Finch and Steve O’Keefe, and the return of a veteran in Brett Lee, but the changes weren’t enough to secure the win Australia so desperately need. While they will hope for better in Melbourne on Friday, particularly from a sluggish middle order, England are developing a psychological hold over them that will be hard to shrug off.The visitors are, of course, world champions in this format, but several members of the team have been relegated to the sidelines for much of the Australian tour. Ajmal Shahzad and Michael Yardy were still more than competent with the ball, however, and Eoin Morgan showed no rust whatsoever as he provided backbone to the middle-order with a fluent 43. It wasn’t quite the same story with Steve Davies and Luke Wright, who survived a combined total of four deliveries, and it was left to a nerveless Chris Woakes – on England debut – to see the side home.It is surely a challenge for both teams to maintain focus on the task at hand with a World Cup just over a month away, but England are on a successful roll and Australia are headed in the opposite direction. The harder task for the hosts might be to re-discover the self-belief that makes all the difference in closely-fought games.

Watch out for…

Cameron White’s tenure as Australia’s fifth Twenty20 captain did not start ideally – making just 6 as his side slipped to a narrow defeat – but his brand of clean hitting could light up the MCG. He has had limited-overs success against England before and currently has more sixes than fours in Twenty20 cricket. A natural leader, he will be keen to stamp his authority on his first series in charge.Steve Davies only faced two balls in Adelaide. It was enough to display both his classy strengths – natural timing and flair through the off side – and weaknesses – needlessly hitting the ball in the air. He is under pressure after Matt Prior’s good showing in the Ashes but if he can find some luck early on he may take to Australia’s pacey new-ball offerings.

Team news

Australia’s power pack of vein-popping batsmen and fiery fast bowlers almost pulled off a win against England, which may be enough for White’s side to stick with the formula. If there is a change it may be in Lee being replaced by the young fast bowler James Pattinson, who could start his career on his home ground in Melbourne.Australia (possible) 1 David Warner, 2 Shane Watson, 3 Aaron Finch, 4 David Hussey, 5 Cameron White (capt), 6 Steven Smith, 7 Tim Paine (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Steve O’Keefe, 10 Brett Lee/James Pattinson, 11 Shaun Tait. After clocking up another win, their eighth in a row, England will be in no mood to change. Especially as Ravi Bopara is not in the squad to challenge Luke Wright’s position.England (probable) 1 Ian Bell, 2 Steven Davies (wk), 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Paul Collingwood (capt), 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Luke Wright, 7 Michael Yardy, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Chris Woakes, 10 Graeme Swann, 11 Ajmal Shahzad.

Stats and trivia

  • If Australia lose again they will set a new team record for the most consecutive defeats in Twenty20 cricket. Though they still have some way to go before catching Bangladesh’s unwelcome run, which currently stands at 12.
  • Luke Wright’s second-ball 0 gave him the unwanted joint title for most ducks in a Twenty20 career.

Woakes stars on day of awful batting

ScorecardChris Woakes had an impressive day with bat and ball•Getty Images

Perhaps it is fitting that, in a week where a shadow has been cast over the unpredictable nature of cricket, the County Championship should produce a game as inexplicable as this.Under clear blue skies and on a blameless pitch, Warwickshire and Kent somehow managed to lose 22 wickets in a day. Had Varun Chopra, at cover, not put down a simple chance offered by Martin van Jaarsveld off Darren Maddy when the batsman had just 17 in Kent’s second innings, it might have been all over by now. As it is, Kent go into the third day requiring another 193 runs, with Warwickshire searching for five more wickets. Whoever wins will substantially ease their relegation fears.A glance at the scorecard might lead you to believe this game has been played on a minefield or under the influence of dodgy bookmakers, but it is not so. Yes, the ball swung and there was some assistance off the seam. But it is batting coaches more than pitch inspectors who should be hurrying to Edgbaston. The bowlers deserve some credit, too. Neil Carter and Chris Woakes, in particular, harnessed the conditions beautifully, with the latter claiming a championship-best performance in Kent’s first innings. Bowling at a lively pace, he swung the ball both ways and brutally exposed Kent’s lack of confidence. He also produced a telling contribution with the bat. With Warwickshire, as ever it seems, in disarray at 54 for eight in their second innings, Woakes scored a classy half-century full of elegant drives and powerful pulls. He brought up his 50 (from just 38 balls) with his ninth boundary – a commanding hook – while there was also a superb pulled six off Azhar Mahmood. His colleagues, however, were hopeless. Even by the standards of this summer, where Warwickshire’s batting has been, arguably, the poorest in their history, for the top-order to subside so feebly in both innings was verging on the pathetic.Darren Stevens bowled well enough. He probed a decent line, found some away swing and, several times, claimed wickets with deliveries that held their line and didn’t swing. But Stevens is no Richard Hadlee. He claimed just two first-class wickets during the 2009 season and, at such a gentle pace, should not be troubling good batsmen. Mahmood bowled decently, too, but is now a 35-year-old with a lot of miles on the clock. The truth is that the technique of many contemporary batsmen against the swinging ball is awful and, in conditions like these, they are found wanting. One thing of which Ashley Giles cannot be accused is a lack of patience with his batsmen, however. Warwickshire’s director of cricket has stuck with them through thin and thinner, with Maddy, Chopra Ian Westwood, Jim Troughton all experiencing horror seasons. Troughton – 27 championship innings without a half-century and counting – now looks so devoid of confidence, that it seems almost cruel to persevere with him at this level. Were he a sick cat, he’d surely be put down.Once again, therefore, it was left to Warwickshire’s lower-order to claw them to respectability. Led by Woakes and the admirably consistent Neil Carter, Warwicksire added 86 for their last two wickets, with the ninth-wicket pair adding 72 in 10 overs. It left Kent requiring 324 to win.Quite what Warwickshire would do without their pair of allrounders is anyone’s guess. They’ve taken 14 of the 15 Kent wickets to fall and contributed more than their fair share of runs. News that Carter, who is out of contract at Edgbaston, has turned down the club’s latest offer, will have supporters quaking. Without his efforts this season, Warwickshire would have been embarrassed. Warwickshire, however, will be boosted by the return of both Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott for Saturday’s vital CB40 match against Nottinghamshire. They are a different side with their England players available.Fortunately for Warwickshire, Kent’s batting is just as feeble. In their first innings, Kent’s five senior batsmen (Joe Denly, Rob Key, Stevens, Geraint Jones and van Jaarsveld) all fell for ducks, with Woakes and Carter claiming four for four in 12 balls at one stage. For the second time in the match, it was a side’s tenth-wicket pair who provided the largest stand of their innings, with Alex Blake and Matt Coles adding 39.When Warwickshire declined to enforce the follow-on, Woakes and Carter must have thought they’d be able to put their feet up for the rest of the day. But it was not to be. They were batting 90 minutes later and, little more than two hours after Kent’s first innings ended, they were bowling again. Not that they will mind against batting line-ups this brittle. If Key, caught down the leg-side, was somewhat unfortunate in the second innings, Denly was once again punished for a hole in his game, when Woakes found the gap between his bat and pad. While Jones and van Jaarsveld briefly raised Kent’s hopes with a stand of 95, the excellent Woakes, only 21 but already a senior player at Edgbaston, returned for a two-over spell just before stumps and dismissed Jones, playing around a straight one, to give Warwickshire the initiative going into the third day.

Players will have a say on split innings

Australia’s international and domestic players will be consulted as Cricket Australia prepares to determine the exact format for split-innings one-day matches. The board last week approved the new format for the FR Cup domestic competition, which will occur in the second half of the tournament in 2010-11, but has not finalised the specific alterations.James Sutherland, Cricket Australia’s chief executive, said the players would review the customer research on the issue and provide practical feedback on competing over split innings. “Cricket lovers say that ODI cricket captures the broadest interest of the three formats, and it is supported with strong passion,” Sutherland said. “But it is a game that needs better positioning and a format review if it is to remain popular in the long-term.”The switch in thinking is being monitored by the ICC while former one-day experts such as Dean Jones and Simon O’Donnell have welcomed the move. Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers’ Association will speak to players over the next fortnight and their thoughts will be combined with those of broadcast and commercial partners before the new look is finalised.”The idea of split innings was popular with fans and we are keen at this stage to look at a 10-wicket-a-side, split-innings concept,” Sutherland said. “We accept that we need to listen to what the public wants but we also need to be sure that ideas are practical, and most important, are acceptable to world cricket and capable in the long-term of being considered for international cricket.”

Rangers: Gio handed Barisic boost

An update has emerged on Rangers left-back Borna Barisic, regarding his availability on Boxing Day…

What’s the latest?

The club’s official Twitter account, via RangersNews, posted a gallery of pictures from training this week and the Croatian international was in action whilst wearing festive attire.

He was absent from the matchday squad as the Gers beat Dundee United in the Premiership last weekend. Prior to that clash, Gio Van Bronckhorst revealed that he was carrying an illness, saying:

“He’s okay. He was just not feeling well. He’s not injured.”

The Dutchman did not mention him by name in his pre-match press conference for this game, but admitted that he had no new blows to deal with. He said:

“Leon (Balogun) will join in the session today and we will see if he is fit for Sunday, no fresh injury concerns.”

Buzzing

Rangers fans will surely be buzzing with this news as his inclusion in training suggests that he will be available to face St Mirren on Boxing Day. Given that he was not out with a physical injury last weekend, he may be able to come straight back into the team if he is well enough to be training at 100%.

This could be a big boost to the Gers as they were forced to play Nathan Patterson out of position at left-back last weekend. As per SofaScore, the youngster lost five of his nine duels and failed with three of his four attempted dribbles, whilst losing possession of the ball 18 times. This suggests that he was caught out defensively in terms of his physical strength and he was unable to show off his quality with the ball at his feet.

Barisic, meanwhile, has won an impressive 62% of his duels over the course of the campaign, making 2.3 tackles and interceptions per match. He has also completed 67% of his attempted dribbles, whilst creating 1.9 chances per game and averaging a SofaScore rating of 7.26 in the Premiership.

This highlights the consistent quality the defender brings to the Rangers team and why his potential return against St Mirren could be a big boost for van Bronckhorst. Fans will surely be delighted to see him in contention to feature in order to see his talent back out on the pitch, winning tackles and creating chances for his teammates.

AND in other news, GVB could ruin Rangers’ title charge with major January gamble, fans would be livid…

Moyes interested in Caleta-Car

West Ham United are interested in a deal to bring Duje Caleta-Car to the London Stadium in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Telegraph, who claim that, with Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma being ruled out of action for a considerable portion of the remainder of the campaign due to injury, David Moyes is looking to bring in a number of defensive reinforcements into his side during the upcoming winter window.

The report goes on to state that Olympique de Marseille centre-back Caleta-Car is one of the 58-year-old manager’s targets, although, it is also claimed that newly-rich Newcastle United are also interested in a move for the 25-year-old, who was reportedly available for just €15m (£12.6m) last summer.

Forget Ogbonna

While it is true that West Ham have badly missed Ogbonna ever since the centre-back injured his anterior cruciate ligament in the Hammers’ 3-2 victory over Liverpool towards the start of November, should the club’s board be able to get a deal over the line for Caleta-Car this January, it would certainly help ease the loss of the 33-year-old defender.

Indeed, over his eight Ligue 1 appearances so far this season, the £14.4m-rated man has been in imperious form, helping his side keep three clean sheets, scoring one goal, as well as making an average of 0.8 interceptions, 1.1 tackles, 1.9 clearances and winning 72% of his duels per game.

These returns have seen the £47k-per-week centre-back average a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.17, ranking him as Jorge Sampaoli’s second-best performer in the top flight of French football – behind only a player West Ham fans will be very familiar with, in the shape of Dimitri Payet.

Furthermore, former Liverpool defender and Caleta-Car’s Croatia teammate Dejan Lovren clearly believes the 25-year-old has what it takes to make it in the Premier League, stating of the defender last year: “He is physically very strong, stronger than other players. He will explode in a few years and become even stronger.”

As such, while the loss of Ogbonna for what could be the rest of the current campaign is undoubtedly a nightmare for David Moyes, should GSB manage to seal a deal for Caleta-Car as the Italian’s replacement this January, the manager’s current nightmare in the heart of his defence would certainly turn into something of a dream for the Scot.

In other news: Forget Vlasic: £79k-p/w WHU gem who lost the ball every 2.1 touches badly failed Moyes
